IPL partners with Capcom for 2013 season, will host Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012, Street Fighter X Tekken tournaments

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • November 30, 2012 at 7:04 a.m. PST
The IGN Pro League (IPL) and Capcom have officially partnered for the 2013 tournament season. The partnership currently includes Street Fighter X Tekken v2013 and Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012.

Discussions are being held about the possibility of adding other titles as well, but what other games may be at the negotiation table hasn't been disclosed.

More details will be released via the IPL Fighters TwitchTV channel at 12 p.m. PST on Friday, November 30th.

Matt Dahlgren, Senior Product Manager at Capcom, added that:

With the positive reception of the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary global tournament series, Capcom has been more focused on the competitive scene than at any other point in our company's history, and we're constantly exploring new ways to provide bigger and better tournament experiences.

It was also stated that IPL and Capcom will be offering one of the largest prize pools in the history of their fighting game tournaments.

The official tournament will start in 2013, but exhibition matches are starting this weekend, from Nov. 29 - Dec. 2, 2012, in Las Vegas.

Dead or Alive 5 was also previously announced as an IPL game.

So SFxT gets yet another chance to live whereas any other game would have died long ago. So will Capcom now ban FGC events from running their games?

I guess SFXT is here to stay. This will get a lot of money hungry players, to pick up the game again. I never thought I'd see Capcom go esports, but where the hell is Marvel!?

This also makes sense why Dieminion was talking about being in vegas this weekend. I was wondering what was going down.

Also good to see that most of the people complaining about SFxT have shut up, it's a fun game and fun to watch in 2v2.

@12 In the IPL's statement is pretty clear that this deal is not going to conflict with the other FGC tournaments, EVO at first

"More games to be announced" so don't count out Marvel yet, guys. Still the hypest fighting gamme out there and IPL knows it will spark attendance if added.

#27
SnakeX said on November 30, 2012 at 9:27 a.m.

@12

No. This partnership has no affect on other FGC events. IPL has stated a million times that it's not going to encroach on anything, and obviously Capcom isn't going to enforce some sort of ban or anything like that either. The IPL partnership is purely good news, particularly on the players' end.

noob question: whats the diff between IPL and MLG?

#30
HooliganComboFTW said on November 30, 2012 at 9:39 a.m.

AE and DoA? Im fine with that. Regardless this is great news for any game thats involved

#31
Smorgasboard said on November 30, 2012 at 9:54 a.m.

IPL's exclusivity only applies to organizations that officially license games to be at their events. Usually some sort of a fee and or agreement is required.

All existing FGC events such as Evo don't ask for permission which is sort of a grey area and not something Capcom can clearly restrict yet.

Other organizations in the US such MLG won't be able to have SSF4 and SFXT officially at their events though.

RedRapperSux said on November 30, 2012 at 9:58 a.m.

Heard about this as soon as it happened and don't care for the news. I hope the Marvel community becomes more raw though.

I guess SFxT didn't get the memo that it is dead.

LOL

2013 just became 2013 times more hype.

#34
Tankverso said on November 30, 2012 at 10:01 a.m.

Everyone keeps saying "where's marvel?"

I'm glad marvel is not being played here, its the one game that belongs to the FGC. Marvel is hype because of commentators and the environment, bringing that to mainstream "gamers" just isn't going to catch on. People are going to understand what happy birthdays and all that stuff are, so it would be way different to watch. I think these two games are a great way for the FGC to dip there feet in the water, and i'm glad marvel is (for now) where it is supposed to be.

#35
JDM98Ferio said on November 30, 2012 at 10:09 a.m.

I'm sure Marvel has to approve. That would be what would hold IPL from running UMVC3

#36
Yousend said on November 30, 2012 at 10:11 a.m.

@30
For starters, MLG is a tournament like any other current FGC tournament (the format, that is)while IPL is more of a league, where it goes across a whole season to later on having play offs. (Not 100% sure on this, but IPL lasts more than 2 days per tournament)

#37
drez1210 said on November 30, 2012 at 10:13 a.m.

Hope to see even more hyped matches now that the prize money is larger. Let's get that fight money!!!

#39
Skye said on November 30, 2012 at 10:23 a.m.

I wouldn't mind watching these kinds of tournaments if they weren't so boring and plain. I understand they want to be formal and quite professional but the commentary is just...less than desired. If they could embrace the scene a little more I would probably take more interest.

@Xykes - "I guess SFxT didn't get the memo that it is dead."

LOL, true indeed. What I am hoping now is that this inspires more people to run it/show up for it locally.

Overall good news, I think. Looking forward to what comes of this since I like both games (AE, SFxT). Only thing that could have made this like, perfect for me is if TTT2 was there as well (I believe that's already on lock at MLG though, correct?).

#45
Cammystrike said on November 30, 2012 at 11:43 a.m.

@35 My problem with that is, Marvel may see a decrease in quality play because of this. Let's use F.Champ as an example. He's already said he plays Marvel, because it pays his bills. He has constantly ripped on SFxT for the simple fact, he can't make money from it.

Now that there's an opportunity to make more consistent money through playing these games, he may very well put less effort into Marvel and focus on these. This can be said for a lot of other Marvel players as well. Look at Justin, he doesn't even practice Marvel right now, because he's trying to win a car at the Street fighter 25th anniversary tournament. He's already shown he wants to go where the money is. Top players seem to have lost their passion and are only looking for a paycheck these days.

I don't doubt Marvel will take a hit from not being included. Heaven forbid any of these IPL tournys fall on the date of a grass root tournament Even so I fully understand your point about marvel being for the FGC. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

UMvC3 needs to be in the lineup as well. It's probably much harder to do than it sounds, since Marvel probably also needs to brought into the contract/licensing discussions with IGN. Today is a good day for the FGC and Esports. More exposure = more money = better games in the future for everyone.

@46
Marvel will still be at more events, have a larger prize pool in total and be more popular. Games that have none of these things AND not hosted at any esport events (KOF) are the ones that needs to worry. Marvel will be fine and still a lot better almost every other game.

#56
PwnageJuIcE said on November 30, 2012 at 6:35 p.m.

what makes it even better is that ipl does a lot of showmatches for starcraft and LoL, with topplayers going against eachother for prizes. Something like that for fighting games would be sick since we won't have to watch Joe or Carl(random names) getting bodied by the top contenders, and just better quality matches overall.
