How to block unblockables in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012, Ryu_Apprentice tutorial

Ryu_Apprentice has posted a very interesting video exploring how to block some of the unblockable (1f hard to blockables) setups in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012.

The methods discussed here aren't fool proof, and it's important that you to have some idea of the setup the opponent is trying to throw out there, but these are solid tactics to make unblockables in SSF4 AE v2012 a bit easier to deal with.

The new premise is that you hold down-forward on wakeup after being setup for an unblockable, like after you're thrown — and then hold forward on the joystick at the precise time. As Ryu_Apprentice explains it, this alters your character's hitbox a bit and makes it so you can block some of the previously unblockable setups.

The video below has several examples of this happening along with a great explanation and other tactics for handling these scenarios, so you should definitely check it out.

I can't handle that feedback, I'll just take his word for it. (Via text)

#2 Its just because they're really hard to block. So much so, that you will get hit 98% of the time

So basically you need stop walking (hence the d/f) and then just-frame block.

Prob is with SF4 people are too used to choosing, and holding a direction to block, which puts them right into the setup.

When I found out that those 'unblockables' are 1F about a week ago, that means it's possible to block but they're hard to do so. Ryu_Apprentice made a good video to demonstrate it. I don't think Capcom should go into 'panic mode' and make Ver.2013 right away. I believe that Ver.2012 is just fine and Capcom have stated before that they are not going to make another balance update for SSF4 and UMVC3 is also not going to be updated as well. At the moment, they’re focusing on SFxT and I hope they don’t go back to SSF4. Players will find out new stuff in the future.

There’s 1 example in SSF2T where old Ryu, old Ken and Akuma have a hurricane kick that is 50% unblockable and if you’re in that situation where you're going to block the hurricane kick against those guys, you won't be able to block at all, even if you are ACTUALLY blocking that move. Obviously, Akuma in ST, wasn't designed to be a balanced character in the 1st place so ignore him. So, even though both old Ryu and old Ken have 50% unblockable hurricane kick, they're still not top tier characters and Vega, Dhalsim, Balrog and O Sagat are still the top tiers in ST. However, it’s been proven many times that nearly all of the other characters can dominate in ST.

@2: because then James Chen couldn't ask on every knockdown setup whether or not that was an unblockable, he'd have to say "hard-to-blockable" which doesn't roll off the tongue.

if you get hit while trying to dash out does it lead to a full combo or is there an air reset? I don't like the idea of holding down when someone is jumping in, especially if the timing is only 1f, if the kick comes in slightly later you'll eat a full combo

I wish I could watch it, but the audio is too horrible.

Does focus attack work against unblockables?

You'll most likely get option selected by your opponent anyway if you do.

Characters also can buffer there unblockables into special attacks for damage.

Yeah, they are not true unblockables. Just very tricky. Good video.

yes you can dash and if you get hit it will be a reset, unless for ibuki will be another unblockable or you can be option select sweeped
