Reverge Labs lays off original Skullgirls team, Lab Zero Games to take control

Reverge Labs lays off original Skullgirls team, Lab Zero Games to take control In an unprecedented revelation from the word of the Skullgirls developers themselves, Reverge Labs last June laid off the entire Skullgirls team from their game development division. Autumn Games, the publisher of the Skullgirls game and the owner of its property, will continue supporting the new team (which is comprised of the old team) that is now titled Lab Zero Games. The reason for the layoff was not given.

As a major effect of this development, the PC version of Skullgirls was delayed and the release of the first DLC character has been indefinitely postponed. A note from LZG's new website is below.

Not being able to tell anyone about these rather significant developments has almost been as bad as being largely unemployed and unable to continue our work on Skullgirls. We have always strived to be as open and transparent as our business and legal obligations will allow, but we feared news of these events would discourage our fans more than our conspicuous silence would. Being able to finally fill everyone in on everything is a huge relief, and we hope you understand our reasons for keeping quiet until now.

Everyone at Lab Zero would like to thank all of our amazing fans for their patience and support through this ordeal and as we (re)start on this new adventure. And even though this change was largely out of our control, the Skullgirls team still sincerely apologizes for the delays and lack of information in recent months.

We’re doing this for you, and we can’t wait to get back to work!

Until then,

Sincerely,
Lab Zero Games

At least the patch is out

What a shame. I'm not sure either or is the best choice. When the game first came out it was all hyped up as a potential big game. However with the silence comes itself fading into the background, and now the fact that they scraped the entire team isn't a good sign either.

Hopefully we see something big from this game or this team soon.

"Hopefully we see something big from this game or this team soon."

Turn on your PS3 or 360 and download the game. Something big came out just this morning. It is nearly 600MB in size so....

:/

And what is it?

I'm not buying the game until I see something that draws me to it. I greatly enjoying watching gameplay, like the characters, (hate how Parasoul is a charge character lol), and hope I see a character I like that I wouldn't mind using. When I do I'll def buy it, but right now not sold on it.

I'm extremely disappointed with this news.I poured in a lot of time o see this project come to be discontinued. If they could add this to the Kickstarter site and gain funds for some more content(I dont know if its possible) It'd be awesome. but from the sounds of it, there won;t be anything new going on for it :(

What's Skullgirls? Kappa

@#6

Kickstarter was discussed among the staff, but they decided against it because it costs roughly $200,000 to make one character. The team figured the sticker shock would turn potential donators away.

Also the project isn't "discontinued" per say. If that were the case than they would have said so back in June and we wouldn't have gotten that patch this morning.

It just took longer because, according to Mike Z, there were only 3 people working on it.

Time to pick up this game again to get used to the new changes.
It's good to know the "why" behind all this, Lab Zero has my support.

People should play more Skullgirls, it's really a GOOD fighting game in almost every aspect (and what wasn't good before, was fixed now)
It doesn't have to be Street Fighter or Mahvel to be good.

ButterKnife said on November 20, 2012 at 7:35 a.m.

I hope they get back on their feet. The game has tons of potential and is only really held back by lack of characters. If they can manage to get out a couple more, it'll breathe some new life in it for me, even if I don't use them.

Man the Skullgirls team is great. Always doing the right thing, and always looking out for the fgc. When this game comes out on PC, i'll fully support everything they put out.

@#12

It specifically cost $200K to:

- pay Alex Ahad, Mike Z and the rest of the game leads to come up with the character concept and the movesets

- pay the animators and clean-up artists (80% of which were contract workers) to do frame by frame animation of the character BY HAND

- pay the coders/engineers to implement her into the engine

- at some point pay the voice actor to make the character speak.

Commercial released vidya games be an expensive business.

Ermapume said on November 20, 2012 at 8:59 a.m.

I don't need a change in mechanics for the game to be worth it. I just would like some more content, but it just isn't happening.

Releasing new characters for consoles =/= releasing new characters for PC. Patching a console game itself already can cost $40000, which is probably why they are pushing for a PC version. IMHO they might as well release a Skullgirls 2 with much more characters than any new DLC, but yeah it's their game so they can do whatever they want.

bugonisx2 said on November 20, 2012 at 9:15 a.m.

@17

That's another thing too!

Part of the reason this recent patch was so huge is that Microsoft allows developers to patch their game the first time free. But every time after that it's $40K a pop. The SG team wanted to make sure they fixed EVERYTHING because they can't afford to a second time.

This doesn't apply to add-on content because Microsoft and Sony get a cut of the sales from that.

Oh man, now that I'm thinking about it...I can only imagine how much money CAPCOM and NAMCO have spent fixing their games O_O

roknin said on November 20, 2012 at 9:41 a.m.

Man, that's some sad news, but hopefully something turns around. t would be nice to see at least a few of those other character concepts come to life.

@bugonisx2 - "Oh man, now that I'm thinking about it...I can only imagine how much money CAPCOM and NAMCO have spent fixing their games O_O"

It's one of those things that people just don't get/understand as consumers. People tend to think it's as simple as "press a button and magically it's patched".

Game easily worth $15, there are games out there that are laughably currently/were $60 standard retail

Gonna download this game again but this time for the PS3.

@KissofPoison: "When the game first came out it was all hyped up as a potential big game. However with the silence comes itself fading into the background, and now the fact that they scraped the entire team isn't a good sign either."

1. The layoff was six months ago
2. The same team was rehired by the publisher and is still working on the game

#26
BUYACUSHUN said on November 20, 2012 at 1:27 p.m.

AS long as the team is still working on it. and if these are the causes for delays then ya know what? I can wait. Same way people waited with whatever game they like i can wait for this, 2013, +R, chrono phantasma (even though i still feel burned)

Viro_veteruscy said on November 20, 2012 at 1:28 p.m.

Love how people don't actually pay attention to what was said. And for those "not buying the game till more characters show up" obviously don't know how to "support" a game. The game is fun and balanced and all people do is complain about it, the team has a new company to handle now so all of this isn't "OMG this happened?! No more stuff?!". Just let the game gain its footing and stop being a damn hypocrite.

BeatNinja said on November 20, 2012 at 2:17 p.m.

I find this game to be a million times more fun to watch AND play then AE or UMVC3, or any other fighter on the market. Mostly because it also has alot more heart then the other mainstream things out there. Long live Skullgirls.

They are not rehired by the publisher. The developers self employed themselves to finish the patch. It's unlikely that they will continue working on the game without finding funding first.

Seems like Reverge Labs has decided to discontinue all support for the game four months after launch. Since we weren't given a reason, we can speculate that they were only after the initial sales profit and had no intention of establishing a new fg IP for the long term.

Nice reading comprehension dumbass. If you don't think the game is the great fine but what is $5.00 accomplishing? We are in an age in which the new generation of games won't retail for $5 no matter how old it is...and you're asking this of a digital release?

Sorry I'm not heaping unnecessary praise on this game because I have personally waited for the new patch after recently purchasing a PS3 after converting from the 360...but $5 is ridiculously retarded and if you're that cheap stop buying games of this gen altogether.

Lorenzo_2003 said on November 21, 2012 at 9:24 a.m.

Skullgirls is a quality product. You can see it in the animations, the vibrant and stylish art designs, the depth of combat, and more. It obviously lacks a huge roster, which is standard now for bigger titles, BUT each Skullgirls character is unique. I appreciate that they only charged $15. Saying it should've been less than that, well, value is subjective, but I agree with Kenshiro that it's insulting to the team that worked on the game.

#43
Dan_CiTi said on November 23, 2012 at 11:22 p.m.

I hope they can do a Wii U version, mainly because I think they would like that the platform lets them set their own price, release dates, and does not charge for patches from what I have been hearing, which is great for indies like Lab Zero.
