Team Ninja inspired by the Uncharted series when making Dead or Alive 5 - stage crumbling, intense action and more

Team Ninja inspired by the Uncharted series when making Dead or Alive 5 - stage crumbling, intense action and more CVG recently sat down with Yosuke Hayashi of Team Ninja for an interview regarding Dead or Alive 5 and other topics. Hayashi discusses how he got started in video games, the fact that Team Ninja was very inspired by the Uncharted series when making DoA5 and more.

Below is a bit from the article to get you started.

So, for you, who is making the best games in the world right now?

For Dead Or Alive 5 we took a lot of inspiration from Naughty Dog. Specifically it was the whole stage crumbling, and things falling off, and the characters rolling down, grabbing on to the ledges in Uncharted. We also wanted to hint at that flow you get into in Uncharted, where you know that something massive is about to happen. In Uncharted you fall off a cliff, or off a boat and things like that, and we thought moments like that would be great in DOA5's fighting system. We got really inspired by that, and we've tried to do something very similar.

Yes, the thing Naughty Dog do well is establishing the character's presence in the world, and I think it's something that works well in DOA5 as a result.

I think that we definitely were inspired by Naughty Dog's work. It's not like we're doing a cheap, superficial imitation of that game. As creators we were inspired, and it's a good opportunity right now to tell our players about this. It's something they might not notice, but we really respect Naughty Dog, their work is fantastic.

I totally got that since the trailers. Very obvious. And well, I absolutely ADOOOOORE the Uncharted games, and therefore obviously love DoA5. :)

Naughty Dog makes great sh*t. Nice job gettin inspiration from those who deserve to be noticed.

Now if only we had a few articles about how these companies did the opposite of Capcom and I would go out and buy their games ASAP.

Interesting to know the source of inspiration on the style DoA 5 is presented with the stages and action esque feel

Nice, kinda awesome to think Uncharted influenced a fave genre of mines in some way and it worked out well for DOA5.

If only they would take inspiration from fighting games, they might actually make one good for more than getting hammered and watching tits bounce.

You know what sucks though, watching the Texas stream yesterday and reading #6's dumb comment makes me realize that this game won't get any recognition. It's a skillful yet people bash it just because it's popular to do so. About 90% of the people who bash it never even tried the game, they are just trying to be elitist fags that like to smell their own farts.

True Story: One of my fighting game acquaintances in my state doesn't talk to me anymore cause I like DoA. We used to always text each other about UMvC3, but once he found out I like DoA, he just kept trying to bash my opinion. He would always say things like, "I can't believe you are going to stop playing UMvC3 for BOOBS".

His closed-mindlessness surprised me.

Btw, I never stopped playing other fighting games. I just allocated my time between DoA, SF, and MvC3. But it's sad that he belittles my thoughts so much just because I like DoA.

Wow that's awesome that they were inspired by Naughty Dog for the stages. I wonder if Drake would be in the next game.

Say i know that there's been alot of news covering DOA5 in in eventhubs, but where's the Dead or Alive 5 Moves, Characters, Combos and Strategy Guides. Is it not a fighting game? They put in Playstation All Stars (like if its even a fighting game for fighting game tournaments) in eventhubs and shoryuken.com in but they won't with DOA5? What kind of f^cked up sh*t is that!?

@10 I'd love to see stuff like that too, but there's hardly anything on youtube or faq sites. I've been looking everywhere for Tina advanced tutorials, but there's only ONE video on youtube. I hope the game starts growing with time and we'll see what people have to offer.

^This guy obviously knows nothing about my game collection. When you own over 300 plus games, all of the DOA's and actually have beaten all of them then you too can say what you want about my comment. The game is bad, it took everything that made DoA and spit on it, and took every aspect that was expected out of the game and makes you pay for it. Stages are bland, costumes lack the luster of their prequel counterparts, characters lack any real character to them, no opening to the game, the story mode was more fillers than story, the characters lost their diversity during gameplay, the stages that were so called so interactive, and suppose to make the casuals happy with their over the top explosions and stage breaks are nothing more than firecrackers, and rock kicking. Face it all these so called added contents traits were not that great. Do not fix what is not broken.

@13

What do you expect honestly, in the fgc, you would find Waldo, his brother, and his uncle before you find a chick.

There is no point trying to defend the game anymore cause the people who actually know about DOA know it's at the very least a decent game, all the others can't get over the fact that there are bouncing boobs instead of bulging muscles.

Honestly if you have qualms with the boobs in DOA but not the body size and definition of 95% of the street fighter cast (Ex. Ryu is supposed to be 5'9 150lbs, Ex2 Abel is supposed to be 6'6 187lbs...), there is something wrong with you, mentally and socially.

@5 Heres your answer: part of Tomonobu Itagaki speech of what inspired DOA said that "Well, I didn't come up that idea originally. I actually got that idea from one of the 2D SNK fighters Garou Densetsu." (Fatal Fury) I know Mai is the one with the jiggly breast.

Well Dead or Alive was inspired by alot of stuff besides Uncharted.

Virtua Fighter was a big inspiration from the controls, and gameplay.

SNK Fatal Fury was a inspiration for the breast jiggle (certain female characters).

Mortal Kombat was another inspiration for the falling off the stages, but very different (Not the 3D MK games because the falling off stages were fatalities at the time, which you would be dead and the game is over).

I've had alot of fun with the DOA series, its a very good fighting game and its very unique.

No that should be right for calling you a dumb f*ck. No opening to the game? You haven't played any of the DOA games I'm guessing. That's all I see from people who have no sense in what they talk about. Here's a fun fact: people who bash on DOA are the ones who play TTT2, a game even more bland and more casual to play than other 3D game in the market. So almost all of your arguments can be applied to a sh*t game like TTT2 for your casualness.

So again next time you open your mouth you best know what you re talking about. I play both religiously and always have. This is not an argument of favourites it is a statement of what DoA has become. So you enjoy those openings and realize how uneducated you really are about the series.

No I'm well more than you have. And I meant the opening to the story, which may have been my fault that I looked over but my other points still stand. Yours isn't statements but you make it sound like it is, which everyone else does. The only thing they brought back were costumes, how is that taking every aspect of the game to make anyone pay for? Plus there's a lot of diversity during gameplay and with characters, you felt bored about it later on cause that's what you think. Don't take your sh*t into facts and act like you know stuff cause clearly even if you play games religiously as if I care, you lack knowledge too.

One of the main bases was the costumes. It was a huge part of it. People expected to see them and loved to see all the types brought. It may not be a extremely important aspect but it was an extremely liked and them now making you pay for something you expect out of the game is a slap to the face. SF, VF, TK, all those games started costumes later so it is somewhat expected for them to make you buy them (does not give them an excuse) but from DoA that is a complete slap to the face. I admit "I" should have been more clear about diversity. Many characters who took more time and experience to learn have been dumb downed like Ayane, and Helena and made more predictable. The formula of the game was fine and needed a little tweaking. They tweaked everything and now the game just looks plain and lacks any life to it. They took a step back, took out content, died down the gameplay, took away a lot of the playability amongst friends by removing all the pair play style modes which have been in the game since 2, the soundtrack has no energy to it and DoA use to have some of the best music of fighting games which was replaced with horrible rapping. Come on there is not even a real final boss in the game anymore. They could have made that new Alpha the boss for arcade and things.

crispylinks77, whats your problem? you seem mad that someone disagrees with your opinion. i've owned all of the DOA games, they are all fun in their own way, DOA Dimensions is the best fighter on 3DS right now IMO (considering its damn near impossible to play SSF4 with a 3DS and its outdated by AE, v2012 and however many patches we have). i enjoy DOA, but it is what it is. DOA is the game where i get drunk and watch tits bounce, its not something i'm going to spend a lot of my sober multiplayer gaming time on. brawl has its merits that make it fun too, are you gonna try and defend that as being more than it actually is?

@26

It's mainly people's ignorance that they believe it's all about tits. DOA is a lot more competitive than many think but none own the game to claim their own statements or opinions. Even TN said they have it balanced first before all the added services, but again everyone overlooks it.

#26 i kinda agree with crispylinks77,i have no problem with ppl giving there oppinion but saying "sucks beyond compare" is bashing on the game..it would of been different if (insert name here) said what they didnt like about the game instead, imo some characters have some character to them but not all fg will have every character be very unique to every person
@27 i agee, some of seriph comments were ignorant but some were just his/her oppinion

@28 I never said it "sucks beyond compare". I actually said DOA was the best fighter available on 3DS.

@27 Brawl is a lot more competitive than many think too, but it still has its faults. Personally, I'm 100% against the idea of free combo breakers, so I can't take DOA seriously. It has good balance, its fun to play, but the counters can stop combos and don't have any restriction on how often you can use them. Yes, they added the different hit level counters (as in high, mid and low) and countering with FWD for kicks and BACK for punches (and a counter hit for missing), but ultimately the system is what it would be like if Third Strike allowed you to parry mid combo as long as you weren't being juggled. Again, I enjoy the games. Story mode wasn't perfect, but it was fun, and having the Virtua Fighter characters is cool because its borderline crossover. Ultimately the counter system stops me from taking it seriously though, but I don't regret my purchase.

I play SFxTK, I play TK, I play DoA, and I own all of them. I do not just say there is something I do not like about a game without giving reason.
