ComicBookMovie posted an article recently that gives a bit of information on the upcoming Mortal Kombat film reboot. According to Warner Brothers' executive, Lance Sloan, the budget that director Kevin Tancharoen will have to work with is estimated at $40 - $50 million. Mortal Kombat (1995) - Budget: $18,000,000, Gross: $122,195,920
Street Fighter (1994) - Budget: $35,000,000, Gross: $105,414,729
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) - Budget: $50,000,000, Gross: $8,742,261
The Avengers (2012) - Budget: $220,000,000, Gross: $1,481,585,111
The Dark Night Rises (2012) - Budget: $250,000,000, Gross: $1,013,114,000
ah...Will Sub-Zero and Scorpion be relevant to the movie this time(at least have their background mentioned) or will they be gimped into simple Shang Tsung henchmen again?
With that being said, the live action MK films (especially the 1st one) was better executed then the live action SF films. Thats nothing noteworthy to brag about since one is the slightly shinier piece of garbage compared to the other.
-Legend of Chun Li was a fail financially lol
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) - Budget: $50,000,000, Gross: $8,742,261
HAHAHAHAHAHA. Honestly, that's the worst film I've ever seen. Even if I would have not known anything about street fighter (which would have been a blessing, since that has made it even more painfully to endure), it's is simply atrocious to sit through.
Also, 40$ million isn't much in the typical Hollywood scheme, BUT - if you have a smart director and someone who actually cares for the franchise, it's totally possible to produce a VERY GOOD FAITHFUL movie. For instance,
Dirstrict 9:
Budget: $30,000,000
Gross: $115,502,313
With Kevin Tancharoen you have that very person at hand - now it's up to WB how much they want to crap onto his work. the more freedom he has, the better will be the movie.
MK Rebirth Trailer, SOLELY funded by him, to get WBs attention:

That worked with a $5000 budget!
If the MK universe would take itself a bit more seriousness and is somewhat rooted in the reality, this could be very dope.
They better had played the game this time rather than just using the characters names and making up a crappy story right there on the spot.
Just play MK9 and their your script the story in there was perfect.
No need to mkae reptile a psychopathic human who eats peaople. No need to make scorpion a good guy none of that.
@6 that's the thing that made the first and 2nd movie.
You need to ADAPT the mk concept and make it into something "new". it doesn't work if you just try to copy the game. As for story, be somewhat faithful (important data), but really - the concept of making Scorp the anti-hero he is, is a very cool idea for instance.
This movie needs to be FSK 18 and gritty (even tho that it's a trend, MK needs it).
Damn, a $40 million budget doesn't seem like it will do the movie justice. By looking at Legend of Chun Li's budget and how the movie was it seems like it might not deliver.
Then again this is Warner Bros. and not 20th Century Fox. They could probably make this work with that much money.
Mentioning the Chun-Li movie is like another attempt the revive the total FAILURE that the movie achieved with -$41,000,000.
40-50 million is fairly average for a movie that isn't meant to be a big blockbuster these days. So that's really not unexpected.
@7
Respecting the source material is important.
You can't just take a known concept and spin it into something completely new, that isn't going to fly and it would put a lot of people off. This movie should not be like MK Rebirth, fans will not want see their favorite characters completely changed for the sake of being on the big screen.
The movie should not be a carbon copy of the games of course, but doing sh*t like changing characters completely and making non-central fan-favorites into main characters is bad fan-fiction level stuff and shouldn't be the focus of this movie. Scorpion should NOT be the main character under any circumstance. He never has been in the entire series' existence regardless of how popular he is.
The best possible way to do a Mortal Kombat movie correctly is to stay faithful to the source material and build on what Mortal Kombat itself is a homage to: 70's-80's martial arts and over-the-top action movies. Making a movie that takes itself way too seriously and is overly grimdark and gritty will not work out well in the box office. There needs to be a balance. The movie shouldn't be just gore porn for the mindless kiddies out there. Beyond the gore and violence, MK has ALWAYS been a fun and humorous game on the inside, what with corny over-the-top dialog, exaggerated sound effects and yelling, and a wide variety of colorful and memorable characters. THAT is the stuff a Mortal Kombat movie should focus on, NOT just the dark and gritty stuff that only casuals see.
I'm sure you're going to take that as "oh so you want it to be a comedy?" now. But no, that's not what I mean. I mean it should be more than just a shallow action movie with a generic "gritty" style and plot.
Sorry, but you're bluntly wrong. The whole "mk doesnt take itself serious" is just what the first films were, even the SF films were like that.
there is no "generic" gritty style, because there hasn't been one for this genre at all.
what you want is batman & robin.(lol) what needs to be done is Batman: Dark Knight. That doesn't mean mk couldn't use a joke or two, what matters that it's set in a believable universe (even including the outer realm, super powers etc).
Do you think gritty equals shallow? I'd rather argue your idea equals that.
The original MK was a good movie. And the MK web series was also really good, despite the crappy trailer they put out that sparked conversation.
If the movie is anything like the ridiculously good web series he did, it'll be damn good.
Seriously, go watch it before you form an opinion.
I don't get why Avengers and Dark Knight budgets are on there, those are blockbusters and have some of the highest paid actors. Has nothing to do with fighting games or fighting game movies. Budget doesn't always make a better movie
Waterworld (1995)
Budget: 175 million
gross:264 million
Widely considered to be one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time. Although it grossed $255 million from a $175 million production budget, this does not factor in marketing and distribution costs, or the percentage of the gross that theaters keep (which is up to 45% of a film's box office takings)
So let me get this straight, you want to make a movie adaptation about a video game which central focus is violent, blood and guts to be a light comedy? No. When MK comes to mind, all we think about is grimey, gritty, why should the movie be any different?
Yes the video games have corny dialogues and silly humor, but if they can somehow incorporate that indirectly it'll be better suited for a movie. I don't want to see Raiden give Sonya a stuffed animal.
I would just hope they stick to the premise of the games. As much as I liked the mini-series they did... the look of the characters was pretty bad and story seemed.... off.
gah, these statistics are meaningless without adjusting for inflation. the value of the dollar has depreciated a d*ckload since 94 and 95.
I want it to be as ridiculous as the First 2 movies.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) - Budget: $50,000,000, Gross: $8,742,261
Honestly, this just made my night.
As for the new MK movie, I just hope its good. Due to nostalgia alone I doubt I will see it as better than the original, which I still maintain was a fantastic movie and a great adaptation. As long as the new movie qualifies as good, I'll be a happy man.
