History of Virtua Fighter series, story lines and beginner guide by Virtua Kazama With the release of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown approaching rapidly, we thought we'd shed some light on the Virtua Fighter franchise. EventHubs mod Virtua Kazama has complied a ton of information and tossed it up in our forum section here on the site.

Virtua Kazama has created some excellent threads detailing the history of the series, the story line throughout each game and even put up a beginner's guide for new comers to get acquainted with this 3D fighter.

Kazama's history section talks in depth about each game, the characters included in each installment, differences between the North American and Japanese versions and more. The story line thread details the main story for each game and how it has progressed and the beginner's guide delves into system mechanics, frequently asked questions and much more.

Here is a bit from Kazama's history section.

Virtua Fighter was released in 1993 on Sega's Model 1 Arcade System. This was the very first 3D Fighter in fighting game history and also the first game to feature ring-outs. Unlike games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, the game uses a 3-Button layout consisting of Punch, Kick, and Guard. The polygonal graphics were breathtaking at the time and garnered success in the arcades for its real-world fighting techniques and its fighting engine. However, the game is noticeable for it's floaty jump mechanics, on which players criticized at the time. But in contrast to 2D fighters, aerial combat wasn't the main focus.

Make sure to check out our forums section here on EventHubs for more information on Virtua Fighter and many other fighting games.

Big shout out to Virtua Kazama.

Really cool! I'll definitely be reading this later.

How different is VF5:FS from the old VF5(PS3)? I bought it when it first came out, but had no one to play with. Would it make sense to go back to it now, to better prepare for FS?

This game is amazing. #1 The PS3 version of the game is Version B and Xbox is Version C. There was another VF version between this and FS, called VFR, all they do is tweak the game in each one to improve it. You can go back and practice VF5 and get a good understanding of the game. It doesn't change too much except for balance. They changed the throwbreak system to make it easier in this one as well. I have actually already started playing VF5 again getting ready.

VF has one of the worst storylines, next is Tekken.

I made one small error about the other facts on VF1. Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing marked the beginning of rendered 3D gaming. Give me a minute.

VF doesn't even need a story, it's not even mentioned anywhere besides the instruction manual. It's not present in the game at all.

If you want story out of Virtua Fighter, watch the awesome anime tv series. It's hilarious.

Virtua_Kazama, love the retrospective (Fighters Megamix was amazing simply for the partial VF3 move set), but I'd argue that Virtua Fighter and Racing were the beginning of 3D gaming. PC games had been using polygons for years and even Atari did it in the arcade with I, Robot back in 1984.

Not that that makes VF and VR any less amazing, of course :)

I said Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racer marked the beginning of 3D Rendered Games. But, thanks for reading though.

3D gaming back then was debatable. Sure you had games like Hard Driving, Starblade, etc., but Virtua Racing popularized it.

I read that you wrote that SpoD is by far the hardest thing bla bla in Virtua Fighter. It's not. If anything historically it's doing Akira's knee but there are also several things out there that are harder (iageri combos with jacky for instance). SpoD really isn't that hard honestly so I have no idea where that came from. Playing Akira isn't hard cause of it, it's not even a major part of his gameplan since it's linear now and the opponent shouldn't be ducking against Akira anyways. Learning to master SDE, modified dblplm etc even is harder due to that you have to do it fast and in many situations while you have lots of time for SpoD honestly no difference between his and Goh's version of it.

Blaze has to have some of the best quotes in fighting games.
"Start running...NAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOO"
"I've got the advantage, you've got NOTHING. HA!"
I'll be invincible beyond ALL IMAGINATIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!"
"My body is an unstoppable.............WEAPON."

Reality

The difficult part of doing SPoD is the precise timing, according to some people I've spoken to. And yes, you are right the knee is really difficult. Remove the guard button after one frame? You gotta be kidding me. But yea thanks for the feedback.

@Virtua_Kazama

Nice to see someone talking about VF series. I remember my mate was talking about VF4 years ago, saying how good it was and all that lol. I wasn't really interested in VF since I normally play fighting games like SF, Tekken and MK. Actually, I was considering getting VF5 about a year ago but I decided not to since I normally play fighting games that I've mentioned. But, since the DLC version is coming out soon, I might try it out. Anyway, good stuff.
