Tecmo Koei plans to sell 1 million copies of Dead or Alive 5, after the title is released globally in September 2012. It will have some form of paid DLC, they said in a recent financial report (.pdf).SFxT reached the 1 mil mark fast but that is because it has the Capcom name behind it. DoA is probably the scrubbiest fighting game out of any known fighter and jumping all over systems killed it's fanbase.
No way will this game reach the 1 mil mark any time soon.
I've always liked DoA, DoA4 alone is one of my favorite brawlers of all time. But since Team Ninja, somehow, managed to screw up NG3. I honestly don't know what to expect from DoA5.
As for the sales, it will be all about the average critic scores, the ads, and the silicone--sex appeal. I think it will do well, above 800k, if not 1M across all platforms.
People who are doubting these figures, don't. Whilst the hardcore fighters cannot accept this game due to its unbalanced roster and bad mechanics, the casuals love this stuff.
At the end of the day there are more casuals who buy anything with bouncing pixalised t!tties than hardcore fighting gamers. Seriously
@1 U never know DOA 5 is nice to look at and easy to pick up game but not a scrubby game because you got people who play this game competitively in a high level and you shouldn't be so ignorant about it. I believe this game will get atleast a million or close because people been asking for this game since doa4.
Warriors Orochi 3 is a fun hack-n-slasher.... now if they some how make one of their Warriors games into some huge VS. game on a large battlefield... that would be a day 1 buy for me. They just need to add one or two more attack buttons... lol
PAID DLC, EVERYONE START THE HATE MACHINE AND COMPLAIN OH GOD U HAVE TO BUY DLC NOOOOOO WORLD IS ENDING
@#12 obscura9 :
Actually they haven't removed the bouncing. The costumes the characters wear, affect the bouncing. As well as some costumes even getting wet from sweat while fighting.
Also some of those same costumes that get wet, also get some transparency.
I'll be getting both DoA 5 and TTT2, but I will not be getting any of the paid DLC for DoA 5.
@Lordd_G : Bloody Roar came to mind as well as soon as someone said DoA is scrubby because as long as the game is fun to play there really is nothing wrong with it. I loved Bloody Roar: Primal Fury on the cube and would pick up a sequel without asking too many questions even if it doesn't even come close to what SF4 etc. have to offer when it comes to high level play.
Also on that list: Killer Instinct 3, should it ever happen.
Killer Instinct would be a major seller for sure. But Rare are too busy making Skittles the Tiger 2 or...whatever it's called.
@20 the same way they can call an imaginary character badass.
1 million is a very modest number. I don't care for the series at all, but I wouldn't be too shocked if they reach that. But at the same time, DOA's popularity has seriously waned over the years so I guess it makes sense at to why they're aiming so relatively low.
I am so excited for this game! I have loved this game since i started playing fighting games. This was my first one. I think speculation is okay, due ninja gaiden 3, however i think we should give it a chance. I think this game has some good ideas. I think true doa fans will love this game. For those of you saying its going to be crap why dont you give it a chance. I play 3d fighting games more than 2d, and to be honest i find 3d fighters to be more fun. Dead or Alive has something unique about it. The counter i think is a great mechanism. Many other fighters dont have this. I think this game is going to be great. I am getting both doa 5 and tekken tag tournament 2. Excited for E3, hoping to see these games there! :D
This game will sell well. Console versions of DOA have done very well since DOA3. Its like smash (easy to get into, fan-service, flair), knock it if you want but the game is fun. Ive been a DOA fan since Dreamcast, its a game I can play with all of my friends and still have a blast. Ill be picking it up day 1, and Ill be having fun playing it. I just hope this DLC thing is handled better than Capcom. I would hate for this game to fail because of poor marketing.
Kasumi looks cute in that pic, very different from the previous games.
Aparently DOA is more balanced than almost any fighter, that is why it has a counter system. Tekken -once you get a character into a combat string or like in Street Fighter you combo and super you're pretty going to lose. Then you always have ONLY 1 or 2 characters people would pick to get easy wins. Doesn't work that way in DOA.
@3 "Mark my word it will fail"
I don't think so, you forgot about casual gamers, and also the game already has a fan base since Dimensions came out and even before. That fact that it's a new fighter and people remember it from the last games it's sure to be successful. As a matter of fact it's even more successful (as a franchise) more than Soul Calibur, Marvel vs Capcom games, and even Virtua Fighter.
These are the figures based on popular fighters:
Tekken 40 mil, Street Fighter 32 Mil, Dragonball fighters 30 mil, Mortal Kombat 27 mil, Smash Bros 22 mil, Naruto 10 Mil and then Dead or Alive is at 8 Mil. Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur did not even make the list of at least 5 Million copies.
Oh and by the way, I plan to get DOA before I would get TTT2 and I bet a good number of people who purchase TTT2 are also going to purchase DOA 5 as well or they would probably buy it later. What's going to sell DOA 5
1. Graphics by far the best from any fighter
2. It's brand new and offers something other fighters don't
3. It already has a fan base
4. It looks very fun and the moves are very interesting
5. The Demo had a lot of positive responses on twitter.
6. Exclusive characters
7. The Sexy appeal
8. E3 is probably going to have some surprises on some new levels and will attract more consumers
was more interested in Doa5 over TTT2 because it feels completly revamped. Played the demo and game feels smooth and it can easily hit 1 million worldwide it has a pretty big fan base on the casual side (similar with Mk franchise)and has virtual fighter characters so thats another incentive. Also nobody beats Doa in terms of stage design/influence in the battle. especially doa5.
Kinda surprised that Ninja Gaiden 3 sold less than Street Fighter 4 and most other fighting games. I thought we were the odd-balls and Ninja Gaiden was mainstream.
DOA's gonna be so sick. Capcom was too greedy this time around with the DLC characters and TTT2 well all I can say is tag is a given in any DOA game, DOA started the whole tag thing after all so no biggie. Tekken didn't really change it up either just looks the same but with the tag element and combot (who just does the same thing as woodman right?).
I'm loving the transformations of characters with each reveal, can't wait for Zack, Jann, Eliot and Lisa - Dam Lisa's gonna look drop dead!!!

Doa was not the first tag game and it's mechanics are stolen from Virtua fighter along with animations from VF. The only difference is bigger tit$ and a broken a$$ counter system and up until DOA 5 using the dreamcast models with just some shaders put on to make it look "better"
