The 2011 release of Mortal Kombat 9 turned out somewhat like a greatest hits version of the series, with a lot of characters and designs from older titles reused. Back in 2008 though, Vincent Proce, who worked at Netherealm Studios at the time, pitched a reboot of the series with a different flavor.

Proce had his own idea for how the series should proceed, and created these concept sketches, with gameplay that would include, "modern multiplayer and dismemberment game design." Check out these new takes on Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya, Raiden and Kano, along with little notes below the images explaining a bit more.

Even though Proce left NetherRealm Studios, his services were called upon to provide concept art for the 2011 Mortal Kombat game. You can find his character designs for the game here, along with some notes.

Also, while we're on the subject of Mortal Kombat 9, Amazon is offering the PS Vita version of the game for free, if you buy the system itself, and they'll also throw in a 4GB memory card.

we all know mortal kombat will forever be mortal kombat. but these designs are absolutely amazing. i think it's about time to get to old toolbox, dust off that shaolin monks game design and go to work. so many characters and from a company that gives a damn about the story telling regardless of how wacky it is, at least it's there.

Sub-Zero Mythologies and Special Forces remakes for anyone with mk9 data, 5.99 complete remake/designs for anyone else!!

Not a big fan of the Sub-Zero, but Scorpion looks awesome! I also love the human female Reptile concept!It's very different!

I think they did the right choice by picking the more conventional character design since going too edgy could be too risky. But this looks awesome.

Question though, what is that yellow goo on Scorpion's garments?

These Skins/new looks or whatever you want to call them look Great to the MAX. They should of stuck with these type of looks and made something out of this. They should still do something with these looks.
