People like to bash DoA for not being competitive, but the counter system is what first taught me how to apply mind games in a fighter, so it hold a special place for me.
I hope Bass Armstrong rocks some manly duds.
I played the demo, and love everything except the button mechanics. I just couldn't get used to pressing the same 2 buttons for attacks, it's too simple. But the graphics, the character movement, the stage destruction, the battle flow and the character damage looks really amazing.
This is going to be the best DoA ever. The same cast from DoA4 plus Akira, Pai Chan and Sarah from VF and two new characters Rig and Mila.
The graphics look great, the slow-mo power moves are lookin' sweet, that stage is pretty cool.
I can't wait til' this bad boy comes out so I can take my BRAD WONG solo or BRAD WONG and CHRISTIE tag-team online and mollywhop some suckers.
wow...a fighting game where chicks DONT have breast's bigger then their heads
Ive been playing this demo for the past week. Its really a blast. If you have a friend that has Ninja Gaiden, if its PS3 you can actually copy the demo to a usb drive and install it on your console. Im hoping that the game gets great exposure. There is even a leaked character roster that has been going around. I would love to see the big boys (Namco and Capcom) being given a run for there money. Competition maybe the only thing that stops these micro-transactions like $1 per disc locked costume, and $20 for the remaining cast of a game. If you have played the demo take to online survey, make this game awesome guys, I would love to see this game at Evo next year.
Sorry for the double post
Yeah I agree with #7 and #1 DOA is 80% mind games and 20% execution (the strings are akin to Tekken one move can lead into many differnt others, like a tree). This is definitely not a bad thing, it separates it out from other fighters and keeps the tension high. A DOA vet cant spot a perfect time to hit hold, that can lead into taking huge damage for mashers. Also its the only game my non-fighting game friends will even touch, because SF and other 2D fighters intimidate them. Accessible stuff is what grows the community
Doa5 demo was awesome since it was my incentive to try ninja gaiden 3 (i played the other ones before but was reluctant when the creator left) graphics, physics, character models, environmental interactions is a huge plus and this feels different if your used to VF or Tekken mechanics since its more about mind games (due to the rock paper scissors format) and less so about combo execution but thats still important and the introduction of the power move makes things more have that cinematic feel (which was what team ninja is going for a "fighting entertainment" then a "fighting game" since people watching would not be bored watching. obviously much less echi crap in this one which may have turned of alot of people before (despite any good game mechanics it may have had) Good news is that Doa games has loads of FREE unlockables whether they are characters or multiple costumes in the past so its nice to see they don't attempt to milk the game as much as capcom or other fighting groups. Only critics i see is that the sudden camera changes can be distracting but tbh i can get used to that since it will separate itself from Tekken and VF even more
@Strider_RagnaroK
Even though there are two primary buttons for punch and kick, the flow and rhythm of the game is smooth and these characters have way more moves than Street Fighter characters and Tekken. The trigger buttons are short cuts to other moves and depending on the analog stick direction the character does a different strike in 8 different directions individually with punch or kick=16 different ways to attack. Street Fighter is only six Tekken is only 4 ways to attack. The only difference is that SF and Tekken is limited to button attacks more. Tekken only 4 buttons for attack and Street Fighter 6 buttons as mentioned earlier. DOA is actually more about the direction of the analog stick + either punch or kick= about 16 different attacks and the flow is very smooth which is why it feels simple, but there's a hold and throw button that gives it balance.
I, as a long time fan of the DOA series, am very pleased with the reactions of gamers to the DOA5 demo.
It is indeed a fine accesible fighting game with its simple control scheme, but don't think it is an shallow game. DOA has a lot going on in the background with the hold-throw-attack triangle, the new power move, and the vast movelist for every character. It is a really enjoyable game.
I hope Team Ninja keep the same philosophy that was used in previous games (like unlockeables costumes and secrets, solo and team mode, full story mode a la DOA Dimensions, and other little but important details) instead of the new Capcom way. DOA games has always been full of content and that's the way it should continue.
@16
True dat, thing is the ecchi stuff that is in DOA games is not as over the top as it used to be, it made me laugh more than once. Beautiful women kicking butt is another thing that makes the game stand out from its competitors (something they definatly nailed this time, Hitomi <3). DOA is really about tongue in cheek humor and fans service, true, but the mechanics are very good, since DOA2 IMHO. With DOA2 Ultimate being a fan favorite for balance. Characters got upwards of 16 costumes in that game, For hold you breath Capcom, Free. Tecmo even gave DLC costumes away for free for DOA3. People get offended over anything these days, hopefully this new art direction, which is very good, will not alienate old fans, and will draw on a new crowd as well. This is a chance for the FGC to take back what we expect a finished game to include. lots of unlockables, lots of different modes and options, Decent Online, and a company committed to utilizing community feedback to increase the games quality. DOA 4 despite its supposed no tournament worthyness was a whole lot of game.
the game is looking really awesome! i hope the love will continue for Virtua Fighter 5 final showdown aswell1 long live 3d fighters :D
Hey Catalyst. Are you guys going to start covering this game when it gets released? That would be awesome.
Yes looks like the gameplay has slowed down a bit and side step now play a bigger part like DOA 3.5. Im glad because the DOA games were starting to cater to casuals way too much and started to become straight up button mashers.
On a side note the graphics dont look like they couldve been done on the original xbox unlike the disappointing DOA4.
I can totally see Dead or Alive 5 having DLC characters, but their costumes are probably going to be free, while at least MOST of them. I can guaranted that we won't be spending too much on the game like the very expensive Capcom fighters that have material already on the game disc at an extra price.
As far as I heard Dead or Alive is not meant to be a tournament game which I think was said by the producer. But regardless it's definitely Tournament worthy. Street Fighter and Tekken etc... to me is just all about just waiting and being patient to attack when your opponent mistakes a play, Dead or Alive for me has depth you have not only attack the character after your opponent made a mistake, but you also have to be wise on choosing how to attack, but either selecting Strike, Hold, or Throw. I also like the fact that you can get out of cheesy combo strings that expands the fight and can give you a chance of winning. In Tekken once you're in combo strings you are pretty much gone, in SF same thing except you get punished with a super at the end. Yes in DOA you could be gone in a combo string, but you can strike break it and counter the attack while in the string.
@cadnexus im sorry but have you even played either SF or tekken? Watch some high level tekken matches if what your saying is true then all you would see is just combos and the same thing applies to SF. Combos do play a factor in those games but the same thing applies to the DOA games.
For example there are lots of pokes used in the tekken and SF games. Combos play more a factor in the DOA games then they do SF. Either way as i stated in my previous post DOA 5 looks better to me than the last two DOA games and im personally looking forward too it.
The game has no depth, you're just meant to be wowwed by the pretty lights, flashy cutscenes, explosions and boobs
@GokaiGreen #7
That only applies at casual level, unfortunately. Once you can preform a 1-frame link as simply as you can a hadoken, execution becomes something you don't even have to think about.
@TheTHCGamer I never said combo doesn't play a factor in DOA or any fighting game. Combos are a part of all fighting games. I'm just saying in DOA you can get out of combo strings more so in Tekken or Street Fighter. Of course I played SF4 and tekken otherwise I wouldn't be making any comparisons. It's just that in DOA the controls are over looked by the combo system that appears to be a button masher, while on the other hand it's less than a button masher compared to the said games. DOA is all about the directional pad and counters more so button mashing. In that case, it has more depth.
@DarkCyclone did I even say anything about the visuals lol? Of course there are some good combo strings, and some other normals that can be perform in SF or Tekken games, but it still lacks the amount of moves that can be performed compared to Dead or Alive by far. In that since, it has more depth. I can come up with a lot more different ways to do combos in DOA than I can with Tekken 6 or Street Fighter 4 AE.
The only thing I see Tekken has over DOA is more characters, and more diversity. DOA not only has better visuals, faster pace game-play and better backgrounds, you can also perform moves with what's in backdrops or backgrounds. Well in DOA 4 you can jump off of tables and perform moves from, use animals in the background as weapons (you can get ran over by an animal or hit it and it may attack),each character has a special move they can perform off the walls, and the maneuvers are really interesting and fast. If DOA 5 uses other existing elements from DOA 4 that I mention and make it better, I can see why this game is called fighting entertainment (which is what is to be expected). For me this is going to be the best fighting game of the year!
Dark Cyclone
Im sure if you tried to take down a DOA vet you would know why mashing will only get you KOed faster. Id love to play you some time high level DOA play is so addictive. Just frames are in the game too, no one is saying SF and Tekken don't have depth, they do, I love most fighting games (not MK :/). I've been addicted to SF like everyone else for the past 4+ years. But DOA holds a special place in my heart. DOA has a different type of depth, Its is something that successful Pro SF player experience when going against high level SF players. But in DOA mind games, start day 1 someone who knows their character's strengths wont get hit from random pokes. I enjoy the risk of the walls exploding and such as it makes you think: "rush down" or "play defense" or mix "up with a throw". You may not like it, but to each is own, it would not kill you to try it out, you may like it. DOA is not about practicing a combo mindlessly for hours on end either, it is about adaptation. DOA has no BNB combos per se because you really have to know your character and know the player using them and adjust accordingly. Counter holds force you to learn other character's moves and strings also. Sure you can mash mid counter, but if I hit you with a low, then a high but you manage to counter the mid at the end of my combo you still took 2 X the damage for every time your counter whiffed which can and will loose you the match. Any way im Glad Eventhubs is covering this game, it truly has become my 1 stop for per unadulterated FG news.
How would everyone rate the cast so far in a tier format? For me its:
S: Hayabusa, A:Hayate, Hitomi, Ayane so far. Hayabusa needs a nerf bad
Nope, no one is saying Tekken or SF4 or other fighters don't have depth, of course they do.
My only complaint with DOA is just a lack of more characters and diversity compared to SF4 and Tekken. That's exactly what I'm saying Mashing buttons won't win it all because holds (counters) beats strikes if you time it right.
Don't get me wrong, I like both SF and Tekken.
Cadnexus
Yeah there variety could use work, but I think this title will break that mold. I heard Ninjas are not the only focus in this story this time. But who doesnt love ninjas Kappa? I mentioned diversity of characters in my survey responses, as well as Story development for other members of the cast. Hitomi and Leifang for example I think have stories that would be very interesting. Check out the eventhubs forum topic on the leaked character list if your dying for more DOA info. That list seems pretty legit. The VF cast in this game will also be interesting, I heard they operate identical to their native game. Akira will be a beast. Kokoro vs Akria would be epic as they use the same style (I wonder if she learned how to fight from him lol).
@cadnexus
I wasn't addressing you. Just saying the game has no depth
I mean looking at it, it's pretty obvious, the game features uneven terrains and random variables such as stage interactions that can interfere with a match. Not knocking anyone for playing this as a fun game for the crazy stuff, bouncing boobies and whatnot, I just don't know how anyone can really get into it like they could with Tekken and VF
@kakashiisagod
I'm pretty sure I'd get blown up by a guy who knew what they were doing. That's a given. My problem is just the game appears to be style over substance and the developer pretty much admitted that this was the case. Because of that I pretty much can't get into it
Should add that I loved the crap out of DOA2 which was the second fighter I got on my PS2. Not biased against DOA by any means
@Cadnexus thats how the gameplay is setup every fighting game plays differently. If you werent able to get out of those combos easily in DOA you would get destroyed. How is DOA any less of a button masher? No real fighting game is truly a button masher when you actually learn to play and i hate to say this at low level play you can eke out wins easier on DOA.
Yes DOA is more about counters but thats because counters are a big part of DOA's gameplay. Dude ive been playing DOA games for a while now so you dont need to school me on how the gameplay works i already know which is why as i stated my favorite DOA game is DOA3.5. My point is those comparisons arent needed since combos and everything else work fine in those other games you mentioned.
This game will be just about as popular as SCV at best and that is if it is lucky.
Most people have never played a DoA or even known an ounce of info about it beyond pretty girls with big bouncy breast. Heck most people aren't even aware that there were always more males than females in this series.
Gotta say though, the counter system is probably the main reason this series will always remain non competitive.
@ya boy do you have a crystal ball or are you just talking out of your A$$? Just because a game like SCV isnt as popular here in the US doesnt mean its not popular in countries like europe for example france and germany. People who are into DOA know about the game and of course if your not into the franchise your probably not going to like it.
In other words speak for yourself.
So glad DOA is back. Bought DOA 4 whe the Xbox first came out and kept it til my Xbox had its final run. Can't wait til I get a new console and play this one.
Hmm, let's see: crossover with Virtua Fighter 5? Check.
Girls look hot, but not to the point of unrealistic trashiness? Check.
Bar for crossovers lower than it's ever been? Check.
Looks like I know where my SFxT money from my cancelled preorder is going.
I hope they give you the option to select english or japanese voices by character like in ssf4 and sfxt, but even if they don't, this is a day one buy for me. <3 Hitomi.
@Dark Cyclone Its cool , respect people opinions as long as they got some experience to back it up. You should have added more to your post I though you were a DOA hater, that has never played the game (lots on SRK comments). DOA 2 Hardcore was an awesome game. I liked the Dreamcast port, if you got a Dreamcast check it out, its definitely a classic. Also the DOA 5 demo is very similar in terms of flow as say DOA 2 ultimate, but also has elements from 3.5. It may appear to be all style (the CPU is always random), but trust me this is a game that is fun, and I see nothing but good things in the future for this title if discussion continues.
#45 on one of the videos it reveals you can change languages to english i believe (unlike before when it was mostly japanese before)
#43
ok fair enough about ninja gaiden 3 it felt meh to me and felt like a game i would rent for the weekend however the playable DEMO for DoA 5 is whats supposed to make you think if this game is worthy of your individual attention or not. which tbh i had that similar attitude when the creator left team ninja but moved on, tried the demo and felt the game was worth my time ( it may or may not be for you but the playable demo is the reason whether you should "give attention and praise" or not.
@43 Obviously you dont have a brain or it isnt working theres a reason why DOA5 is the 5th SEQUEL. The game obviously has enough of a following for the game to keep warranting sequels same thing applies to SCV.
Get out of your little bubble just because a fighting game isnt the most popular here in the states doesnt mean its not popular else where. Once again SC is more popular in places like france and germany where they have some of the best SC players.
Please think before you post.
