Mortal Kombat movie reboot features lowly supermarket employee with out of this world powers Kevin Tancharoen, who directed the Mortal Kombat: Legacy series of web shorts, recently announced some of the plot details for the upcoming motion picture reboot of the series.

Speaking with Bloody Disgusting, he revealed that the film will, "follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers."

Tancharoen noted that this character, "must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is."

This might remind you of something else... Shop smart. Shop S-Mart?

I know super hero movies is where the money is at right now but... I don't know if a MK movie has the scale to do it.
Too many characters to redesign and the "common person becoming extraordinary" again?

I honestly have done better origin stories than this.

yes, very Evil Dead-like. Maybe this supermarket employee ends up being Raiden with Amnesia (again).

Sounds more like a superhero movie than MK. Or even something along the lines of Harry Potter.

Basic MK plot should ALWAYS be: There's a tournament where the greatest Kombatants from various realms battle each other, like gods over olympus, to the death.

MK mythology is based on a modern age, where mythological figures and gods are real. I absolutely DO NOT want a realistic MK. Period.

It's like there's some unwritten law that if you make a movie based on a fighting game, you have to completely ignore what's in the games and make **** up. I'm sure someone could screw up the plot in a goddamn Virtua Fighter movie, and the only plot those games have is 'J6 is bad, Dural is Kage's mom, and there's a tournament'

The guy who came up with this story didn't happen to be the guy who came up with that OTHER piece of $#!% martial arts story for the "Hidden Kingdom", was it?

That movie was @$$!

The best MK short was the one with the twins in a fantasy setting...why can't take that tone and concept further in a feature length film and stop trying some odd crap to dismayed the fans. The best FG movie of all time is still Street Fighter II Animated movie, because it took the origin for the fighting game and stretched it further, it even gave Capcom ideas for its future SF projects--the Alpha series, and Street Fighter III were all inspired by the film.

I already seen that plot before.

It was a rip off He-Man live action from the 80's

The saddest thing about the Virtua Fighter plot is that the most compelling story is Jeffry McWild's quest to catch that damn fish.

ffs can he please just make rebirth, it got a great fan reaction and was his original idea in the first place, here for those who haven't seen it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_gMRj...

see it's that simple, he already had the idea in mind, he should just build on that and I'm sure a great film could come of it. Unless of course his hands are tied by WB, we all know how fussy companies can be with their ip's, usually just gets in the way of product quality most of the time.

bunch of nerds upset that a movie adaption is not word for word copy paste formula from the videogames/comics.

ie
Bane being a 5'10 guy in charge of the League of Shadows. Who does not take a massive amount of steroids that makes him 8 feet tall and freakishly huge. Oh no Nolan ruined teh batmanz! Ducard and Rhaz al ghoul are the same character? Bastardization!

Or Wanted.... leauge of assasins??? They suppose to be super heroes???? They ruined teh movie!! Watchmen? Nuclear threat!?? Das stupid dat suppose to be a ALIEN SQUID!! worse movie evar!!!

Then again there is some "terrible" movies adaptions.... Batman and Robin.... Bat credit card and Bane being a 1 dimension 'tard body
builder.

So in otherwords you stop crying and wait for the final product before you cry and say it was a bad idea.

What are you smoking? That looks just as horrible IMO. Read up on the MK mythos, because I don't see tournaments, immortals, gods, and fantasy-styled (other realm) persona in that at all.

Realistic doesn't work with MK. Unless you make up your own story, in which case, just call it something else.

The acting wasn't the best, but the 90's TV show: Mortal Kombat Conquest, actually worked. It was based on the original Kung Lao and took place 1000 years before the first game. And man, with a better budget on in movie-form, something like this would be excellent!

I'll just leave this here:

@TwoCoins
You must not know a damn thing about MK, the characters, or its mythology. And I rarely hear people complain THAT much about most comic book movies, unless they're just terrible movies in general (Daredevil).

This isn't just a case of changing small things, fusing characters, altering origins in a way that works on-screen. This is completely WAY OFF the original source material...

Apples to oranges, IMO.

Dude they don't have to follow word for word, but a common guy that discovers he has beyond human powers? Isn't that cliche enough? Plus it's not MKish in any way.

For those who haven't seen it, and don't mind spoilers (if you know the MK storyline, it's not spoilers really), this is the ending to MK Conquest (TV show). It's epic, especially if you love Kahn, and want to see a tragic ending.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RLq37...

This is the direction to take the reboot movies. The games actually a great universe, full of already-interesting characters. It's not scientifically explainable, and doesn't look like the normal Hollywood-garbage. It's not forgettable, in the least. It's just my opinion, but I think the original movie (just the first one) was actually really close and the TV show was a great attempt, especially considering the budget.

How cliché and dumb. Would it have been that hard to simply do what the first movie did, and you know...MAKE IT ABOUT A TOURNAMENT? Seriously, they can do whatever they want for the plot, but at least have the same basic structure as the games and the only truly good video game movie out there.

Many times they just want to capitalize off the name, because they know people will buy into it. They take the name and maybe 20% of the source material.

You would think this would get written down at some point, and someone somewhere would say:

"This is a bad idea. This is quite obviously a bad idea. MK fans will hate this. Why are we doing this? It has literally written itself. Why are we doing this? Seriously? You guys? Can we stop this? Is there a way to stop this?"

And then it would stop, and they'd go on to make a movie that might actually make its money back. They're like that endanger species from the Simpsons that was sexually attracted to fire. Don't hump the fail! It doesn't love you! STOP HUMPING THE FAIL!
