It's unlikely that King of Fighters 13 will continue to be in Major League Gaming's (MLG) lineup of fighting games, Carlos Arvelo, community manager, recently told EventHubs. He added that it's not impossible for the title to return, but due to poor performance at recent tournaments, it doesn't seem like it will happen.MLG Columbus: Winter Championships - March 23-25
• King of Fighters 13 — 25 entrants
• Mortal Kombat 9 — 92 entrants
• Soul Calibur 5 — 75 entrants
MLG Anaheim: Spring Championships - June 8-10
• King of Fighters 13 — 30 entrants
• Mortal Kombat 9 — 84 entrants
• Soul Calibur 5 — 59 entrants
There's some positive news here though, as Arvelo added that MLG isn't going to slow down in regards to fighters, and if anything — they'll be growing in the future. He noted that Major League Gaming is looking to put a new strategy in place for fighting games that will be more in line with what people are used to.
We'll have more news here on EventHubs about MLG's fighting game plans, as it develops, so please keep checking back.
Here's to hoping more people pick up the KoF series. Hopefully VF 5 and DoA 5 should become more popular on the U.S. streams.
Is there a particular reason UMvC3 isn't at MLG?
It's clearly the most hype and upcoming fighting game at the moment. You would get shed loads more entrants and viewers if Marvel was in the line up.
I couldn't watch their program. There was way too much downtime between matches... the commentating was also pretty boring and the ads were a nuisance.
PogChamp!
Top players supported the game but they can't do it all themselves. And MLG's response? GTFO KoF you dont give us no money!
I don't blame them though, since MLG is all about da paypah. No hype, no fun, just paypah (and that fake sportsmanship that I can't stand, but that's just me anyway). Well, call me narrow-minded, but KoF not being on MLG is their loss, not the community's.
So! it seems the FGC will have all top players and announcers back, which is awesome; my only concern is how well will they be received, because the FGC punishes lack of loyalty at the same level a top player punishes OMG Itz Andre when he drops a combo.
Lol anyone who is actually "mad" that people were playing in the mlg series or went to commentate should take a hard look at themselves in the mirror.
MLG would find a way to de-hype UMvC3. Show a match every 10min, lots of commercials, PG rated commentary, no popping off, no crazy side bets.
Sad to see KoF go but at least now most of the top players will be in the same tournament, just less money up for grabs
if mlg wants to make its fighting game turnouts successful, it has to separate them from their other games (LoL, sc2 etc.). they should hold their own mlg sponsored fighting tourny--that only has fighting games--with a fgc-like atmosphere (getting popular commentators and streamers). that's the only way they are gonna attract more people. oh, and not scheduling their tournys the same weekend as other majors would help too.
one of the main thing thats hurting the kof scene at mlg is mlg always takes place around another big major so everyone usually goes there
Marvel 3 at MLG is like turning Basketball into Golf. Hope it never happens.
@nZiFFLe
MLG did hold their own fighting game only tournament, see here: http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2012/ap...
I bet that their "strategy for the future" would include adding DOA5 into their lineup. History is set to repeat itself.
I still think if capcom games were to pro it would be IPL and I would rather it be them then mlg because they are abit more willing to use our rule set and what not, anyways sad day for kof I mean trb get bigger numbers, seems like fgc just dont like mlg.Now I think that vf5 or doa5 will take that spot which is fine gives those games a chance to shine
@6: "I like how MLG is sending Capcom a message by not including any of their games. It's indirectly saying "we won't promote you until you cut the BS!". That's the reason they're not in."
... Do you honestly think that MLG isn't including Capcom games by choice?
You're not very bright are you?..
@17 No one knows what is going on behind the scene, MLG claims that Capcom blocked them because they didn't want MLG to "kill the grassroots", yet why the freak is Capcom letting IPL handle the SFxT exhibition matches and the SF 25th anniversary tourney? Which BTW is a big **** you from Capcom to the grassroot TOs especially EVO which could have handled the celebrations better?
Coincidentally, Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Unlimited is coming out soon. Will we see a replacement game at the next MLG event?
I am still confused as to how they can make their events "more in line with what people are used to." They aren't going to add Capcom games, but even if we pretend that Capcom games don't exist they aren't going to get rid of the stupid continuation rule, will still spam their stream with ads, will still charge 50 bucks for players and 30 bucks for audience....... I really can't see them compromising an inch on a model they are so proud of. Essentially no matter what these guys are doomed to be nothing but a glorified regional.
Aren't there 1000 KOF players registered for EVO?
You would think that at least 50 of those players would attend these events.
MLG is the saddest thing to watch... Commentators have to behave as if they were professional sports anchormen with the result that they look as if "They can count to potato".
I hope some other company with a less ridiculous style will take control of the pro fighting game scene in the distant future.
This is what I would do.... Cut MK & Soul Calibur, force people to play KOF and stop being scrubs playing terrible games like MK & Soul Calibur.
Funny how KOF was the only game who had an increase in entrants, as small as the number was. And yet the majority of the entrants consisted of top talent, so it says nothing about the quality of the competition (one of the best KOF tournaments so far, in fact).
Yet MLG still doesn't understand what makes the FGC tick. It takes a while to build trust, but if they're going to give up after only 2 events, then they don't have what it takes. Certainly doesn't help that they continue to conflict with major FGC tournaments. Not a lot of regard for the community they promised to respect.
I'm personally not a fan of MK or SCV, but I hope they continue to do well. Maybe if they succeed, MLG will start giving more importance to fighters as a whole.
I tried to watch the MLG stream, but it's impossible. hardly any matches, boring as hell.
people who are mad at capcom for refusing MLG to host capcom tournaments are idiots. I'm so glad they don't let MLG near their games.
I'm a huge KOF fan and i believe the KOF scene in USA it's not like in other countries, like Brazil, Mexico, China, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Spain and a lot of other ones, where we have a lot of fans and people that like to play KOF.
This kind of news is sad for the KOF fans, but i hope the game does well at Evo and the scene grows a little bit more in USA.
@Masaki
they conflict with major FGC tournaments for a reason. MLG is a business. they don't want FGC tournaments for their games to exist, because it costs them money when players choose the FGC tournament. it's 50 bucks less for them.
EVO got 1000 entries for KOF. MLG wants a piece of that pie. they will continue to host FG tournaments on the same date as FGC tournaments, until the FGC tournaments stop doing MK and SCV due to lack of entries.
they want to force people to pay 50 bucks. if you are interested in a certain game you have to watch their advertisements with the occasional game in there.
ofcourse MLG says they think FGC and they can co-exist, but that's bullscheiss. they are in it to exploit enthusiasm for a game.
FGC tournaments are made for the FGC. MLG tournaments are made to make money and they will sweet talk every gaming community as long as they think they can make a buck out of it.
MLG can kiss off as far as I am concern because their format is really terrible and lackluster, it just kills the momentum and it is such a bore to watch from a viewers perspective. The tournament had a conflicting schedule with East Coast Throw Down which is an indicative for poor entrants, and besides I don't see it as a lost from KOF community since players only go there for the money.
lol kof was the only thing worth watching at MLG.
that's like getting rid of kobe and keeping pau gasol and bynum.
@uguumachine
And how many of those 1000 KoF signups only did so to get the t-shirt? When you only charge $10 and throw in a t-shirt, you can bet your ass there will be a lot of signups for it.
If the KoF community wants to continue being the red-headed stepchild at Capcom tournaments, then that's fine. That's their choice. I wish KoF the best because it's probably my favorite fighter to watch.
And while MLG would certainly love to land a Capcom title, they really don't need it. League of Legends and Starcraft 2 are enough to simply dominate the competition. Not even the illustrious EVO matches what MLG pulled in for Anaheim.

Imagine an OTT fighting game like UMVC3 at MLG? Most Marvel (or maybe all of them) players would go to MLG only for more bigger payouts than what most FGC events has to offer. That is if Capcom allows MLG to host their fighting games, which I hope that doesn't happen in the near future or so. Earning some good amount of money is good but money isn't exactly everything in life. It can kill off the player's passion to become better players (not all of them but almost certainly there will be many of them).
I don't understand what they are doing wrong besides holding events on the same days as other major events. I went to 4 out of the 5 MLG tournaments for Tekken 6 back in 2010 and it was nice.
BTW the lowest amount of entrants we had was 89 but usually over a 100. So expect TTT2 to be in there in fall.
Cut the MLG hate bull. After all the clamoring everyone did to MLG to give KOF another chance after Columbus, once again people did not show even when the event was in Anaheim which is the back yard of the biggest KOF scene in the US.
It doesn't have to be only MLG or only fgc events. MK&SC communities do both just fine. MLG was a good chance to bring the spotlight to KOF and get more people into it. MK&SC communities knew this and jumped at the chance to do it instead of continuing to play 2nd fiddle in community majors that are pretty much capcom centric outside of a few.

No hate on KoF since I enjoy that game, but think. How many people do you think entered for that Mai t-shirt incentive just so they can dq in the pools. Anyway KoF in Evo is getting heavy international competition lol
KOF is a great game, but the terrible online mode is an absolute dealbreaker. With the number of fighting games out there, you can't afford not to have good online play if you want to compete. In this era, it's simply not enough to port a game designed for the arcade and slap on a few features, you need to be committed to console development from day 1.
#45: You obviously are a UMvC gamer I bet...People do not play games that actually take time to learn now a days so of course many people will not play it(like you). If people are not being babied with simple this and easy that they do not want to deal with the game. In other words gamers need to step they game up and stop wanting to be fed everything from a spoon.
MLG did not fail KoF. They gave you guys a chance and invested tens of thousands of dollars and then it turn's out there no one really up for it, so it became just a gentleman's club between the most notable veterans. The community failed KOF. Face the truth.
the should just feature more KOF but cut down on the entry cost and the prizes.
Wow.. So they aren't going to give KoF more of a chance..
I'm pretty sure sooner or later they could have some of the more recognizable players enter KoF. Give them some time. But if they narrow the window of opportunity this much, then I don't even know. Not to mention that they're going to base their KoF stats from tournys held on the same (SAME) weekend as other majors............................ (I look down on this KoF decision that hard) wth MLG
@ all those people who blast the KOF community for not supporting MLG like the SCV and MK9 community: as mentioned T6's attendance was at 89 minimum and usually over 100, and yet it wasn't able to last more than 1 year. Do you guys honestly think MLG is happy with the turnout of SCV and MK9, that those games aren't in danger of getting axed soon?
Well, back when Tekken 6 was on the circuit MLG was not in a good state. With SC2 and LoL and the globalization that they are undertaking (for instance, airing MLG in China/Singapore/other asian locales) they are in a much better financial state to attempt to reach out to the fighting game community. Do I expect it to last forever? Not really. But trying to predict anything more than a couple months away is foolhardy.
I think MK9 and SCV will be on the circuit through 2012 at least, unless the turnout plummets of course. I'd expect to see Tekken Tag 2 or maybe them bringing back Black Ops or another shooter (Reach?) to fill up the slot left by KoF.
