Updated with final results: This story has been updated with the final results and battle logs from the fighting game portion of the MLG Anaheim Spring Championship tournament.
Why do they have these fancy after match discussions ? Why not just fit all the matches in straight away I don't want to see all these interviews and analysis. Fighting games are meant to be fast paced
If fighting games truly have depth then they are worth analyzing, especially if they high level matches.
They need:
- Top Capcom, Namco games
- Fast paced matches (No interval between match)
- Good commentator (preferably Seth Killian)
And we are in business.
What top Capcom games?
I hope you are talking about Hyper Fighting.
Lol, how naive...
The game selection is fine, You don't need to go Capcom for a successful tourney. Wake up this is MLG. Has a more serious atmosphere where their are more booth-ladies and fresh air (where the places don't smell like a run down Taco-Bell) are present. The Match analysis interval is to showcase this and give the audience/viewers anything they may have missed during the actual gameplay along with a discussion to explain why X, Y , and Z happened during that matchup. If your naive enough in believing That MLG should be despised for their fighters then this is gonna hurt the fgc overall due to the loss of exposure and additional tourneys since they provide the prize money
lol this is not fine. not many people enter, alot of people get byes. commercial break is longer than the matches itself.
running commercial is fine, but don't think 10mins man.
Is Romance really a top kof player? he lost to tokido who play the game for 3 months.
You need to explain stuff that goes down if you wanna draw in new blood to the scene. Sometimes I think the biggest thing holding Fighting games back is the community itself.
hmmm elts do some deduction
juicebox is hosting the stream
MLG is org the tournament
they play sc5 mk9 and kof
if all these statements are correct i can deduce that this is the very worst kind of esports entertainment. would recommend to old women working in social services. boring and stuck up people that is. and yes hooligancomboftw i think you'd fit in rather nicely. go watch a romcom.
It's actually alright, some of you lot just like to complain like old women.
Only problem is the long breaks between the matches thats all. We're used to hype match after hype match which makes our heads nearly explode. I don't think we can get used to the wait, we don't have the level of patience ha
If you compare streams by the people and streams by the "pros" it's really kind of funny. Ultra, James, Seth, and others have actually given more effective serious commentary. I know juicebox and the answer should know a lot about KoF, but I'm not really hearing them say what is so smart and effective from the players. Obviously they aren't allowed to get excited because that wouldn't be professional *cough Pro football/baseball/soccer/any sport commentators literally stand up and yell into their microphones fairly often cough*. Wow that was a long cough...Like others have said the delay between matches is really the killer. I can almost deal with commentary that doesn't contribute anything (hype or insight), but it is really difficult waiting that long for a match.
i feel that kof is the only GOOD fighting game MLG has to offer soul calibur was kinda a step back and i think gameplay wise MK was as bad as people think SFxTK was imo
they should replace mk with tekken as well as add SF4AE virtual fighter 5R and maybe marvel 3
Very rarely do you get hype match after hype match. That only happens in the the finals and even then there is usually a delay between matches as people perform button checks. Still they can probably figure out how to fill time better but not really a priority with attendance being a bigger issue.
Why would being excited about matches be unprofessional? Also why would people think that MLG want to ban hype when the thing they like most about fighting games is that it is has more hype? Juicebox and the. answer were both quite nervous during the last event but have shown considerable improvements since then. As they get more comfortable, they can only get better.
Before you nit pick at my post please gasp the main context of what I wrote...........
No, MLG would likely be much better with Capcom games, and if you truly think otherwise you're an idiot. KOF and SCV are great games, but their player bases are much, much smaller than AE and Marvel and they're harder to understand for the casual viewer. If you're going to argue that you're not in touch with reality. If MLG and Capcom can get on the same page and add Capcom's current big two, offline and online viewing will go up and more big names will enter, and MLG may be a little more accommodating to the changes we want to see due to the increased interest.
SF4 and Marvel 3 are terrible, get Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown in there.

They put VF5 FS on WNF and it was such a snoozer. the players their didn't give the game a chance hardly
Whether we like MLG or not isn't the issue. I'm just thankful for them even giving KoF a chance(even though it may be a jab at capcom but who cares)and all of the high level matches in top 8. Good job to Tokido for coming out and showing why Hwa Jai is one of the best characters in the game(the Hwa tech was old as hell but people sleep on this character) and Good job for Romance for coming back and taking him out.
Well similar to watching different shows on a variety of channels I really enjoy most ALL of the streams.
We are spoiled these days and have the luxury of choice.
I like that MLG does their thing. I also like that it is NOT identical to the other streams.
If a game is being broadcast that I have no interest in I just don't watch. No big deal as to who it's from. I'm just glad there are so many out there.
@20 in case you haven't realize the guys at MLG are a bunch of liars who never meant what they said. Sundrance had said before they would give us 98% of what we want and 2% will have to be what they want, ATM does it look like we are getting that 98%?
@28 even if they were to get Capcom games do you really think things will be different for MLG? That they wouldn't have more ads than actual playing in their streams? At best their numbers will be better by 2-3X, but the fundamental problem of them selling an inferior model to what EVO sells still exist.
@ #32 besides the extended series and some ad time, They gave the fighting games alot. Huge prize pool, a ton of set ups for casuals, Art doing the seeding so that top level players don't play each other early, ran tournament on time, gave fighting games there own stage, and took out the guard rails.
If that doesn't sound like giving the community 98% then you are just spoiled. Hell KOF wasn't suppose to be at Anaheim. Also there's no way they are making money out of fighting games with those low entrants and viewers.
@32
The only people benefiting from MLG so far are the players there. Everyone else including MLG and their sponsors are getting nothing.
Also, what were you expecting other than really good matches?
@foolly #36; Romance 6 - Tokido 3 is because of MLG's continuation rule.
Earlier in the bracket, Tokido barely sent Romance into loser's with a score of 3-2 Tokido. When they met again in loser's semi-final, the continuation rules kicks in. In every other FGC format, there would be "reset" best-of-five match -- but the continuation rules gives credit to the player that previously prevailed -- the results carry over and the match becomes a best-of-eleven (or first-to-six).
In the first match Romance lost by execution error on the last hit of the last round of the last game. In the runback, Romance took Tokido to school and went 4-0 for a final score of 6-3 Romance.
Tokido vs Romance I think it was the best match of MLG. Congratulations to BALA who did an amazing job, but sometimes hype is not about who is going to be the best, it's about 2 excellent players with the same skill facing eachother and trying to win...
Tokido may be a player who doesn't play KoF a lot, but make no mistake. HE DID study in a short ammount of time, what JAPANESE technology was the best for him in order to win MLG. We all saw what japan can do with HWA and that was 100% high level technology. I refuse to believe Tokido was a lamb on this tournament. He was advised by the very best of his country at the top level in KoF.
Romance, what can I say about this guy? AMAZING Yuri, that character was sooo good vs japan that even BALA used her in the match vs tokido. Latino technology was at the top of the top vs the top of the japan's technology. No one can say otherwise.
AND that's what Hype is all about.
@38 Japan is absolutely trash in KOFXIII..... very best of Tokido's country is worthless.
so how did KOF do? was it good enough that MLG will continue to support it?
@#41
I heard 24 players again show up... in Socal, KOF wasn't suppose to be at Anaheim, but Arturo and other KOF ppl convinced MLG it would sell out and ppl would show up for Aaheim. Since they didn't show up this is the nail in the coffin for KOF at MLG.
@40 wow u have no idea what u are talking about if u think tokido is the best Japan has to offer u are greatly mistaken I live in Japan and there are fools out here who are ridiculously good, but it costs a lot of money to go to tourneys and when u only play kof it's harder to get sponsored
@38
tokido isn't even a top kof player in japan, yeah he might have been trained by the best but kof is one of the many games he plays, he had to focus on two games this weekend while other players had one game, it's hard playing multiple games, also you can't just compare technology, tokido doesn't have a lot of kof experience, let's wait for bala, romance and the others to actually face TOP PLAYERS in kof from other countries, not saying tokido is trash, guy did great at mlg
Tokido is not the best of japan. he doesnt even play this game. juicebox is a fool for implying Tokido is the best japan has to offer. i guess trying to get more hype. i also dont like all the indirect shots juicebox takes at SF4 when its the game that made his ass famous.
Bala for me is #1, but the actual best player in Japan could prove a challenge, you never know. hope we see some at EVO.
WHAT HAPPENED TO DAIGO AND CROSS COUNTER ASIA?? does idiots forgot to stream the FINAL DAY LOL
I thought Luis Cha was meant to be better than Bala?
It looked like he was struggling to adapt to Sanwa parts though.
@Folly
They didn't forget, they chose to pre-record the matches and then stream it when more of the US could watch it. If you watch day 1 and day 2, it was meant to be 8pm in Singapore so it was supposed to be night time but you could see daylight behind the commentators. :/
They're going to be streaming the recording at 7pm EST, but most ppl know the results/have seen the GF on youtube by now.
While Tokido isn't a dominating force in any of the game he plays but he is still one of the best players Japan has ever seen skillwise. You don't earn the title of God by being good at only one game.
yes hes one of the best at his respective games, that is not my point. KoF is brand new to him, he hasnt been playing it for years like his other games. for that alone you cant say he is 1 of japan's best representations IN KOF that is disrespectful to the kof veterans in japan.
thanks you tedtasty. still im would have thought it will air on sunday, not monday
@#52 They felt ECT would take away viewers from them so they postponed it until after ECT had finished. Of course that's going to backfire now that the spoilers are out. Sad thing is they didn't let anyone know about this until after ECT had finished, so many people were waiting for the stream to start as per the schedule but it never did.
