In a departure from other websites, Giant Bomb took the time to ask Ono some pertinent questions about Street Fighter X Tekken, its gem system and fighting games in general.Giant Bomb: Fighting games were a massive hit in the 90s...until they weren’t. With several games now under your belt, how do you avoid falling into the same complexity pit that alienated so many players all over again?
Ono: As you mentioned, once fighting games had that boom in the 90s, basically the market was flooded with all sorts of different fighting games. Like we mentioned, they were kind of made for the arcade setting, so while there was a lot of them, they were actually really simple at heart. Some of them got kind of complicated--Third Strike had parries and stuff. For Street Fighter X Tekken, what we wanted to do, it all comes down to balance. You wanted to be able to appeal to the casual audience, while having enough stuff in there for hardcore fans to play, research and do their thing in the training mode.
What we tried to do with Street Fighter X Tekken was to put in aspects that would appeal to all users, things like cross rush, the tag battles--these are the things that the casual user can really enjoy really easily, while it also has some merit for the hardcore players. It’s definitely really hard, but we tried our best with Street Fighter X Tekken to keep everyone in mind and make something that everyone can enjoy.
One more thing that wasn’t available in the 90s was online play, and that’s something that we put a huge focus on this game. All the modes in this game can be played online, and you can do online, offline, [and a] mix of human/CPU. We wanted to give players as many options as possible. The great thing about fighting games is that it’s like one-versus-one, and you’re trying to compete against the other guy in that kind of arcade setting. With online, we’ve been able to do is bring that kind of arcade setting onto the Internet, so you can do it, even though arcades don’t really do well these days, it’s still the kind of experience you can get if you’re playing the game online. We want players to foster that human network, human interaction--going back-and-forth with ideas and strategies. We think that Street Fighter X Tekken, [with] the new net code and things like that, will help them really enjoy the online.

nicely done ono, nicely done =)

If you compare 3rd strike to tekken or umvc then yeah it IS complicated. You can easily win in umvc and tekken just by mashing buttons and some combinations, all those combos are really easy to do (doesn't mean that there aren't hard combos to do tho), but you can't find that easiness in 3rd strike.
When I have friends that come over, they never wanna play VF or 3rd strike, only tekken, umvc or soul calibur. It appeals to them and they don't find it hard or boring =)
...i'm so tired of developers nowadays focusing on online in fighting games! just bring me some decent off line expereience goddamit...why it should be like every bloody game focusing online?! thats rediculous...tired of it and online pricks, who think they're centre of the world...
oh yeah...worked hard on the netcode? Heard this drivel so many times in the past. It will probably be good for Japan/Korea with their superior internet infrastructure however it will be poor for us/eu players.
Sf4 netcode is only demmed passable because t6/kof/mvc3 are have bad online play, some of those games' netcode is so poor it's unplayable.
Please let's not have a street fighter verse tekken competitiveness argument (not the game, but literally street fighter and tekken). I never got into Tekken, but it's apparent that the game is about taking risks and making punishments.

Most people don't want old-fashion. Sorry if that hurts your feelings, but many people would like to take advantage of technological advantages of the last 20 years.
It's good that Capcom realizes that a good online is necessary for a fighting game. I just hope the network code doesn't disappoint.
@7
The amount of people who play games online is WAAAAAAAYYYYYY bigger than those who play offline.
I find Third Strike a lot harder to get into compared to Tekken and KOF but to each his own.
@7
Did you know that the online mode of the new fighting games is the reason we still have fighting games being played by more than japanese people on arcades and a couple of friends? If SF4 didn't have online mode, most people that play now would just never had bought it or already given up. If people just give up or not buy, companies would also give up fighting games. What I'm trying to say is that you're really stupid if you think that not havind online mode is a good thing.
KOF XIII probably will not be as popular as it should be if they don't fix the netcode, like it happened with KOF XII, no online play, no sells.
Awesome, I can't wait for this game or it's new net code. Plus it might actually draw in some of my casual friends in because of the extra modes they're putting in. Great job Ono, this game is gonna be sick!

I agree with you completely. Companies like Capcom completely ignore the single portion of the game as if people who play fighting games don't like some engaging solo play.
Of course the people on here who are part of the FGC would be aghast to think that anyone would play single-player, but not everyone is hardcore and good single-player options are much more appealing to us more casual fans. Why do you think every critic bashes on the single-player portion of video games for being "bare bones," just like they are doing with Soul Calibur V right now.
If Capcom wants to reach a wider audience, improve the single-player portion of the game with good stories, campaigns, and innovative ways to experience fighting games.
(BTW - I have been playing fighting games since the mid-80's, so though I may not be hardcore at becoming tourney scene, so that makes me casual in a lot of people's eyes, I am hardcore with my love for fighting games.)
#3 You'd think anyone with a small percentage of text comprehension would understand that Ono was only citing ONE of the mechanics in 3rd.
I could bet with you he has in-depth knowledge of the game's system, even if can't reproduce them in the gameplay.
#6 If you lose to mashers in UMvC3 or, lol, Tekken, then you're not good enough.
@14 who says, "If Capcom wants to reach a wider audience, improve the single-player portion of the game with good stories, campaigns, and innovative ways to experience fighting games."

It's not about not improving online mode, it's about improving both, offline as well. SF as a franchise has interesting characters, but the games have awful stories. They are bad in more ways than one, and do not even succeed at being satirically clever. Also, we need more engaging offline modes.
@18
I agree. Both areas need improvement.
I loved these character's back when Street Fighter II first came out and wanted to learn more about their stories and read about them. Unfortunately they dropped any pretenses of making any attempt at making coherent stories with character development and now it is just a joke.
@3 people get mad and say its hard because you actually have to go to training mode to learn how to do all of the best things in that game. And cause you can't throw 10000000 projectiles and be 1337.
@14 You're right, "aghast" pretty much sums up how I felt after reading #7's comment but after reading yours, I get it. I mean I still think it would be utter insanity to release a fighter without a focus on online competition but I also dont think it's crazy to want a campaign of some sort as well. MK for instance was all the better for it and I also think UMvC3 would've been better with one.
no casual is gonna pick up 3S and beat a competent player everything is just so tight its like banging a ....
anyway i realize alot of people are hating this whole gem and craziness in the game but ono really sounds like he is trying to make everyone happy its just hard to do that i commend him for the effort
@22 i agree thed stories back in the day i was really into i think they should really bring out a game in the future that fills in the gaps and once and for all sets the stories in stone even if the have to contradict somethin to fix all the holes but then run with that for good
@22
I agree but i kind of don't yes characters do need to be fleshed out but also if you want to learn about the characters you can read the comics or at least a wikipedia page. Most history can be learned through fight intros, win poses, and win quotes. trust me these new endings (SF IV, MVC3, Tekken) aren't as expositional as endings of SF II where we learned every thing we needed in the course of 4 panels.
@10
How can you say the amount of people who play online is way more than people offline if there is no record?? Think before you speak. something as simple as sign-off from online and play a game b/c the annoying online people bugging you to play a game you are not currently playing. Then send 50 msgs till you do, or log-off from online.
So dont say something you cannot prove. there are a lot of kids who have 360 but no one is paying for their account. that is a vast amount. then there are times when people dont play a game online.
@7
Completely with you on that. Online modes are fine, but a lot of those games, if they didnt have offline modes, i would not play them after a while. Like SSFIVAE i play offline with friends, Keeping them interested in the Company. If SFIV had stuff like this, like if they implemented Dramatic Battle from Alpha 3, i bet a lot more people would buy it, b/c they get to have a friend with them to beat CPUs or things they could never do. Even Pros might like taking another friend and juggle the mess out of the opponent. Simple things like that keep some people playing. All they did was make it online compatible and added more "modes" to online play, but its no difference. Talking about Tag Battle, that was a good troll right there
@28
I've got somthing for you..... Udon comics! They were the BEST in the business with the SF story!
They filled all the gaps from SF1 into Alpha into SF2. They were even working on a SF3 series before it apparently got cancelled. But the SF3 back stories were Fu<kin AWESOME!
Oro takes down Makoto's Father! And his entire school! Then Mak wears her fathers Gi!
I know it's comic, not "in game story" like you wanted. But if your a SF fan it's the best read you'll ever have.
It's cool to see why Cody didn't make the SF2 roster lol. And Gouken and Dhalsim save Ryu from Akuma! Fan Effin Gold!
i think some of the best offline things are a story mode ala blazblue and i think SoulCalibur 2 (maybe it was just some dungeon mode but still hella-fun) and all the modes from tekken 2 and 3. Then there should be no dullness offline. Oh and the scramble mode for some good ol M.U.G.E.N. fun
(There is a break-dancing samurai joke somewhere. Maybe something like dont be worried if you leave your console smelling like sunflowers or something.......lol?.....)
