I agree with Aris. I love all fighting games but Tekken is one of my favorites. But it seems like the fan base has and will continue to drop due to the complexity of the game. That's actually the reason why I loved it... it was hard to play and be good at. But this day and age... games are more simplified, if you would. Don't get me wrong, I love street fighter and mvc3. I'm just saying that they may want to dumb down tekken a bit to grab more americans to want to play it. We shall see what happens.
And one more thing... Fix the lag on tekken, my gawd!!! That's a deal breaker mang. Not many tournaments around to go to as it is... can a brother get some online play at LEAST!?!?! Geez.. lol.
@7 today is the first day I've ever heard someone say tekken was complex.
@10 me playing it is irrelevant like your life, my comment simply states that I've never heard it referred too as such. I've played tekken and don't have anything to say about it.
@ 11
Lol that's a little harsh.
But I do agree with you. I have never heard ANYONE say Tekken was complex till #7. Thought it was just a juggle fest.
Comparing Street Fighter to Tekken is just not fair. Street Fighter is like algebra, Tekken is like advanced calculus. The gap is just too huge for most people to understand. You show someone a SF match they can get it instantly they know what's going on, you show someone a Tekken match they don't have a clue unless they put a ton of time into the game.
There is a reason Tekken has been the #1 FG in Japan, Korea, The Philippines, and Asia in general for the past 6+ years. There is just so much too the game.
@13 not to take anything away from the Philippino people, but citing them isn't doing much for your argument, whatever that may be. There isn't a correlation between spectator friendly and player friendly gameplay. I'm not the least bit qualified to speak upon tekkens gameplay so I will not. One of the reasons why tekken is more popular than street fighter can be attributed too the fact that before vanilla street fighter 4 was released the last main installment in the series was released in the arcades in the year 1999. In contrast tekken has had consistent releases since the original on the Playstation one system. what does this all mean you ask? It all means that Tekken is the more familiar series too the current generation of gamers, and many of the younger people in japan (which are the type of people who play in arcades) have grown up with some sort of tekken game.
@ 13
This is just my opinion, and I only dabbled in Tekken, so forgive me if I'm wrong. But whenever I watch a Tekken match, all I see is two people blocking and feeling each other out for that ONE opening. Once someone gets a clean hit, it's just juggle, juggle, juggle, juggle.
If I'm wrong, please tell me. I want to get Tekken cause the characters look cool to me.
Zero is right
Tekken is just a much deeper game but Im not taking anything away from Street fighter because it's also a deep game but it's simply smaller than Tekken.
You can't be on the outside looking in and assume the game is not complex enough for you or even make the statement freely. You have to become a willing participant and student. Spend some time with an expert even an intermediate who knows Tekken and ask him how to play, you will see how starkly different Tekken is compared to SF.
My first character I learned in Tekken? Lei Wulong, tekken 3 and Tag, and though he does'nt get as much love as he deserves, next to King and crew he is by far the most complex of the entire cast. (Im looking at you Ono, waiting). He made me respect Tekken for what it is and im glad he was the first character I learned.
Ono might have dumbed down the Tekken cast in SFxT but they deserve far more better respect than that.
Where does Marn get the money to sponsor himself and Wolfkrone? I thought he didn't have a job and was broke. . .
SOPA is not dead and it is going to continue in Feburay.Please post this video on your youtube account so everyone can see this.Sopa and Pipa must be stopped
Everyone keeps stating Tekken has complexity, much more than SF, yet no one is saying what that complexity is? The footsies? I use to play tekken casually, but I got bored of the game layout. To me it seemed like all it was about was like others have said, getting one opening and capitalising with a juggle fest. However, the music and characters are pretty awesome!
tekken's not that technical but its fun as f*ck
and fun is a good thing
its only recently playing some tekken6 again that I realise how slow and boring ssf4 can be. Probably why I'm more hyped for sfxtekken than most because it looks much faster and in your face than ssf4
Tekken more complex than Street Fighter?
LMAO stay free.
Look at the tournament scene. The majority plays Street Fighter and Marvel because they simply have more depth.
I like Tekken, but it's just really popular because it is a casual friendly fighter.
@18, marn has made several obvious hints on WNF streams before that he is a bookie. It's the kind of thing you think a bookie would not blurt out to 10,000 people, but marn is an idiot. Most small time bookies self destruct or get arrested within a couple years
@Zero
People watch SF4 and they just get it?
I don't know.. It took me a long time to see where players would place crouch techs (or where to bait for crouch techs), what an option select was, meter management, understand why someone would end a combo with a tatsu instead of a more damaging combo (positioning), and just in general did i really notice how much is going on in a match.
How many different game-changing systems did Tekken have from iteration to iteration..? Just an honest question, and my bit on the argument.
I really like Tekken though..
The explanation as to why Tekken is so much deeper would take like a 15 page essay so it's not something easy to do. One huge thing though is movement. In Street Fighter playing footsies and movement is literally just holding the stick back and forth and occasionally dashing and jumping. Considering Tekken has like 10+ different methods of back and forth movement and ways to control space between the opponent PLUS sidestep and sidewalk it's much more complex, deep, and you have more options and your opponent does as well.
Just to name a few, Back Dash, Forward Dash, Walking, Running, Back Dash canceling, regular Dash canceling, Dragon Dashing, Stairsteping, Snake Dashing, Haha Stepping, Fox Stepping, Wave Dashing, Crouch Dashing, and Mist Stepping and more. Some are character specific, some are universal, and then there is the fact that no ones side stepping abilities or back dashing abilities are created equal.So different characters excel at different ranges or tactics depending on their movement options.
Then there of course is learning how to do all of this and applying it which is HARD, Anyone can tape ff or hold f or b, but to do a perfect BDC cancel in repetition, that's another thing.
That's a small tidbit of how deep Tekken is and I've not even scratched the surface. The explanation I just gave doesn't even give it justice.
Tekken's complexity comes from the High/mid/low choices of attack/defense and the high risk/high reward that comes when the hit is confirmed, add to it the fast movement options and the attack options that they open up.
I think T6¨didn't do these very well, dunno why, but to me, the best Tekken example would be T5 (I must say that I am NOT very knowledgeable about the series as a whole, I skipped T1, T2, TTT1 and T4).
Also, from what I've seen so far, TTT2 might be the best one so far.
tekken is a deep game but it isnt that hard to learn and is rather boring when you learn it I would say tekken is on par with sf4/mvc3's learning curve like its easy to start pressing buttons but once you learn it then its awhole new game heck vf isnt that hard to play either I mean its hard to play if your other fighter you played serious was sf4 then yeah its tough but tbh tekken wont appeal to me at least until it gets more flashy and less boring to watch,now namco did a REALLY good job with sc5 they scaled the roster and move list and added a super meter with EX moves and made it pretty darn fast I am not saying tekken needs a super meter but it needs to be flashy or some big change or tekken will die in the U.S like VF and vf5fs wont bring back vf either
funny thing with ssf4 is it doesn't even reward technical skill because of the damage scalling so you're better of just sticking to the simple, easy mode bnb combos 90% of the time.
@30 the lack of damage scaling is why there are usually at least 3 bob players in top 8. Damage scaling is a tool used to maintain balance and maintain a real meta game. From what I have seen in tekken matches players get two openings or one with rage then juggle and wall splash for the victory. The fact that street fighter matches have a much more involved meta game makes it a more intellectually demanding game too me. You have to account for various situations all in one round and have to adapt on the fly because one opening wont win you the round, you need at least* 3. the mechanics in tekken themselves are pretty deep and there is alot to the meta game but you don't really get too see that much, tekken would be a much better game with proper damage scaling because it would draw the matches out more there for alowing the players to explore all aspects of the meta game and forcing them to adapt.
@27 I agree completely, Tekken is deep and you only covered the movement.
I think the only reason why Tekken isnt so popular is because how laggy it is to play online. Theres no more arcades to play at so online player base is huge. If Tekkens netcode was as good as streetfighters, then I bet Tekken would be on par with streetfighter.
You ever wonder, if it's because the are two totally different games, 3D fighter and a 2D fighter. There is no sidestep and high low meddle bulls**t cos' it's a 2D fighter. And it's the reason why there isn't fireballs in Tekken, would just be stupid.
@krazhy
Well, people like to hate on SF (why they hang here is beyond me) so they don't care about the fact that they are played on different planes, obviously meaning different things have to be compensated for. I love Tekken, too, but for every fool crying about staying in never ending combos and dying in Marvel (we might be talking SF, but people just hate on Capcom fighters period), you have the same dumbass bragging about Tekken, where you hit the wall or get launched one time and your match is blown. Tekken is awesome, but our FGC is full of people who use dumb ass reasoning to justify their bias.
@7
I don't think Tekken is losing its fanbase due to complexity...it's just not fresh anymore. Honestly, when was the last time Tekken had a true jump in innovation? It's kinda hard to say. A hardcore fan could name new features, but to a casual or newcomer? Probably little since Tekken 3. Tekken 4 wasn't well-received, Tekken 5 was loved, and Tekken 6...it's a great game but isn't much of a leap from 5, and some would say 5 is better. Hell, some people prefer Tag lol.
At the end of the day, only the hardcore will stay with the game after its hit its peak. There's just too much new competition out there for people to experience for people to just main Tekken.
