It's been a long running debate in the fighting game community if the Smash Bros. series is a fighting game, and Capcom vice president, Christian Svensson, weighed in on the subject recently.Do you consider the Smash Bros. series to be a fighting game? This is something that the fighting game community always argues about, so I want to know your personal opinion on this. — Greg
Svensson: I'm not sure how it couldn't be considered a fighting game for all of the reasons raised above. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.
That said, whether it makes for good fodder for a competitive scene, that's not anyone else's place to say other than the players that play it themselves.
So stoked I get to keep my SSF4 main.... Akuma next please? — Matthewcrowe666
Ono: Just be patient. He is hole somewhere in anytime... ;P

akuma + kuma = death
akuma + jack 6 = best team
akuma + raven =
Ono only hints hints and hints...where all the official confirmations? we had like six teasers and non of the characters from there (except Ling) has been confirmed so far (and even that is becuase of accidental leak...) where are all the promised announces? the only character officially announced was Asuka, but thats it??...we have like two and half months to go and there's still crap loads of characters left to be announced...(i hope there is...)
It's kind of funny when people call Smash Bros a casual fighting game then go back to playing Marvel 3...
"Just be patient. He is hole somewhere in anytime... ;P"
who translates this s**t?!?!
evil ryu is ryu and oni is akuma ........
smash was on the tourny seen for a long time so who the hell can say it's not a fighter?
GNT4 is a fighter?
Still not sure how anyone can not think Smash is a fighting game. "Party" does not = a Genre. Party is just an atmospheric term that applies to games good for parties or gatherings. Rock band is a rhythm game, Mario Kart is a racing game, Cranium is...yea.
Regardless, Smash is all about the fighting. As for competition, if it works it works. And it has worked for about a decade at this point, so it's hard to disagree about its status unless one is completely ignorant/fanboyish. Plus there are no comeback mechanics in tournaments, something heavily scoffed out nowadays by some competitive gamers.
Akuma is a given for SFxT, at least as a boss.
Akuma is in?
Grea! Now I know who to pick after I get bored of either Ryu or Ken...Thanks for continuing the shoto love. I hate change!
Smash is a fighter. It really shows how little people know of genre or how stuck up they are about what makes the games they play a fighter over others when this subject comes up. It seems like people who are playing Capcom fighters make it them against the world in terms of how legitimate everything else is. Tekken gets hate all the time, 3D fighters get hate all the time, Smash gets hate all the time. Mortal Kombat, you name it. They're all fighting games. If they don't personally appeal to you that's one thing, but trying to get all high and mighty like you call the shots is ridiculous.
Smash is a fighting game that can be played as a party game and the majority of people play it casually. That is something that can be said for every fighting game on the market.
@ Summoner
Erm, Oni = Gouki/Akuma. Same person with Oni acting as an unleashed beast form of Gouki. Kuruoshiki Oni is his "name" due to the intense form Gouki is under. Much like Ryu as "Evil Ryu", y'know?
@ Smash = A Fighter
Funny how I just got back into playing Brawl with my friends. Seriously though, how could Brawl not be considered a fighting game? Competitive or not has nothing to do with the genre, as it was designed for party play, but under the right tweaks and conditions, ie: items off on immobile regular stages, the game becomes incredibly deep with the Player's skill becoming more of a factor than how difficult or simple one character might appear.
My friends and I usually stick to Final Destination, Battlefield or Smashville. I use the Classic Controller with Fox, Ike & Sheik as my top three. Anyone still play online?
If smash is not a fighting game what type of game would it be
This is why I love Eventhubs.
"Is Smash a fighter"
Eventhubs: Absolutely. It has tournaments, dedicated players and a ten year following, doesn't it?
Shoryuken: (Sorry this account has been banned for having a non-elitist, teenage opinion.)
niiiice! probably goes without saying but i was stoked about the addition of juri....dream team whoooo
@ 20
SRK is full of stuck up elitists like Chindogg and Keits.
"You dont like our opinion eventhough we have no facts ur banned baby!"
I hope for Akuma they keep his gameplay like this: two bars for a super art will be his goshoryu super and obviously three will be his cross art, BUT instead of using all three in a cross art as an option you can use it for shun goku satsu. It should be like that, well at least along the lines because it does follow the akuma character tradition. Plus he is my ssf4 main lmao
@23 That is so not true, the reason why people get banned or flagged is because they are too dumb to post a specific subject in the correct thread. Not to mention the constant whiners that are flame bait threads.
And so you know Keits is a Smash Bros. fan and post news on it whenever possible. So as much as I love Eventhubs your post is extreamly biased my friend.
What do you guys think? Do you feel Svensson's description of the Smash Bros. series is pretty accurate? Leave a comment below with your thoughts. wtf was svensson talking about ???
Akuma!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
smash bros brawl was the most hyped up fighter ever.. Yeah even more than marvel 3. It shouldn't have been that way but it just was.
smash was fun, while it lasted. if they put akuma in, they better give him the super arts move where he rains down multiple fireballs at his opponent from the air. i stressed that since ssf4 was first announced, but they went with that ridiculous akuma-copter instead. and they even refused to give it to oni as well.
"GET TO ZHE CHOPPA"
Haha oh that's adorable you still use gay to mean something negative. Man I kinda miss 7th grade not really but yeah good laugh. Anyhow smash is a fighter no matter what you think of the player base or characters.
LMAO I kinda agree with @40 I use to play smash alot but never knew people played it serious and we were really good at it I actually didnt know about that till like 08 its kinda a fighting game and its kinda not but if it works then let it rock but the next smash will be even more party like since the creator wants it to be more of a party fun type game which is why he took all that crazy melee stuff out, anyways I knew akuma was gonna be in but I feel that he wont have a partner though
Mate, Oro aint no slouch. Theres no shame there hahaha
I like the game Smash Bros.. But i particularly don't like the competitors in that game. They look down on me when i use items/smash ball, choose a moving/dangerous stage, or give me lectures on why I would "clearly" have the upper hand based on the character i use and cut me short off my meaningless win (if i win).
I'm sorry serious Smash Bros. fans
I'm sorry I don't down-grade my gaming experience by limited stage use to 3 choices, shut off all the very fun-to-use items, and choose to ignore all the cool stuff Nintendo put into the game for us who want to enjoy it, just to enjoy it for what it can be (un-competitively). Listen.. I said what it CAN BE. I didn't say for what IT IS.
I'm sorry that I actually enjoy and like the game, but get criticized for stupid reasons.
This is all also my opinion.. So keep in mind. What do I know..?
SMASH IS A FIGHTER. AND IF IT OR ANY OTHER GAME CAN BE PLACED IN AN COMPETITIVE SCENE IS ALWAYS UP TO THE PLAYERS. EASY ANSWER
PS. OKAY THANKS THATS ENOUGH. NO MORE SSFV CHARACTERS PLEASE SOME UNEXPECTED ENTRIES IN SFXT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. MAYBE KARIN OR SODOM IDK
Oh Ono, Akuma's gonna be there.
As for Smash,Sven is pretty much saying the true point, either way, its a fighting game, and its different so what. The thing is, it can easily adjust to any type of gamer, Casual, and Competitive. Its not like you havnt heard the phrase "No items,3 lives, Final Destination"
Wtf is so funny about what #40 said?...He was serious, and since he's so serious about people who take Smash Bros serious he's gay....
I haven't played a smash bros game since 2003 but always just assumed it was a fighter since you know, you fight and all.. and just because you have items to throw around now it's a party? WTH is a party? I put smash bros on the shelf next to PowerStone
Also @48 I don't understand why people who actually does take the game serious, don't play the game for what it is Maybe thats why some people are confused when it comes to Smash... Items, stages and all its a fighter people
Smash Brothers is not a fighting game. It's a sumo simulation.
where are the big news they've been talking about for months
why is he talking about smash
@kabukisama
LMAO, so true. I've played Smash before and come to think of it, it's true. All the game needs is E Honda and it's all great LOL. Speaking of Honda, I hope he's in SFxT...
@WARGROUND_COOK
Have cookie for referencing GNT4! ^^ Was playing the game just yesterday, forgot how amazing it is =) Makes me lol how much was reused for MvC3 though, all the hit stuns and crap look exactly the same even after all these years xD
YESSSSS!!!!!
Just waiting on Dudley now :)
@20 : you are so right about SRK, people on here can be tools, but no where near as snobby as SRK forums.
SFXT is going to be effin awesome
A friend of mine told me...
"Smash Bros. Is for those who can't play real fighting games..."
Always thought that was funny...
lol wut?! he doesn't think that "Smash" could be classified as a fighting game? now that's harsh! I mean come on, a bunch of unmatched cute characters fighting each other with minimum rules and no balance is not a fighting game? I don't know but it just sounds like a MVC game to me, he probably forgot Megaman, Roll and Arthur....meh!
Super Smash Brothers a party game... My problem with it being considered a party game is that it has skill levels, very vast skill levels. Just let be what it is a fighter. If you don't like the game then by all means don't play it, but it is what it is.
Smash Bros really is an odd duck. It emphasizes movement much more than any other 'fighting' game, which is why its stages aren't linear.
However, you don't fight until one character 'dies' or is 'knocked out', there are only ringouts.
I can understand why Smash is hotly debated, but I still think it's a fighting game, since that's what the characters are doing; it's just not a TRADITIONAL fighting game with lifebars.
Lol I love how every fighting game that is not a capcom or in most cases.. A street fighter title is considered garbage here lol. I mean I know... FOR THE MOST PART.. This is a street fighter fan site but still. There were fighters before SF... some during... and there will be more after the series is long gone.. If that ever happens of course.
I am still awaiting the fighting game to end all other fighting games. I bet it will be too amazing for any of us to handle but, will be worth a try
eh smash bros is more fun when there's no dicks banning characters or stages.
I love Smash. I've played Smash since day one of the N64 version. To this day, I love the game, but my main issue with the SSB games is this: The 'competitive' side.
I've been in Brawl tournies as well as Melee ones and my god, I HATE the players who take the game so seriously. I have never been able to get along with the Smash community at all. Yes, the games have tournies, but the 'srs playrs' ruin it for me.
As far as the SSB games go, they are fighters. Just not your typical fighters. I stand by that opinion, whether people agree or not. =)
You can always expect Ono's twitter messages to pass as news here.
