History of Poison: Video examines gender, origins and more

MegatonStammer put together an excellent video that delves into the history of the famed Final Fight character, Poison. Poison's true identity has been highly debated in the fighting game community for some time now and this video does a great job of giving insight to her origins.

Tips by Rafael2487, hanguknamja and a few anonymous tipsters.

Street Fighter/Final Fight characters, while cool, are pretty shallow. So i find it amusing how people try to analyze some of them so much, specially Poison

Those are pretty wide hips Poison has for being a male, seeing as men don't and can't have hips like that. Show me a man that has hips like that and it will further give credence to the theory that Poison is a man. Remember, men, no matter how hard they want to be women and are willing to have as many surgeries as possible to make it so, can't completely replicate a woman's body that she has by nature.

At most, Poison is probably meant to be a "newhalf," but those kinds of hermaphrodites that look completely like women, except for what is between the legs, don't exist outside of crazy Japanese anime.

In the end, as Capcom keeps re-iterating, Poison isn't real and she can be whatever you want her to be.

Great video, I always thought it was so stupid of people in the fgc to debate on a topic as stupid as a made up character's gender... It's obvious what this character was intended to be from the beginning. I don't think the developers can drop any more obvious hints as to what Poison's gender is.

Haha, you show proof to people, and then they get all defensive about it. Even when you prove Poison is transgender, they want you to shut up so they can remain ignorant of the truth, stay in denial, and keep their sexuality intact. Poison is transgender, there is really no room for debate. That is what she was always meant to be, and no matter what anyone says, that is what she will always be.

Finally. Something i can show easily that Poison is a male in japan. So many people read half of the article and saw that she was changed, but never read the whole thing where it stated that she was actually a Male to start with. Love the ending too. Capcom changing Poison to a female would be nice, then i can actually watch the win pose instead of mashing buttons to skip the whole thing lol. People confused about its gender isn't the only reason why people liked Poison. Chun-li is obviously female, but she is more loved and/or popular than Poison. Changing her to Female would give people something new to talk about Poison. If not, then at least give us Roxy, even though her name isn't as cool lol.

ok i cant believe some pple will jump on the band wagon as soon as someone wags a photo in your face and way a few fact in your face and declar it truth. first off i found no proff of that original concept art anywhere on any website or database so i dont ever really think its real and even if its real i doubt thats the only concept design and probably was just meant to be used for an early game release for america. he even acknowledge this in his video that she might have been a women to begin with. i do my reseach and found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?
if you got to 5.3o you find most of the stuff he meantion is in this guys video but for some reason this guys some how got his hands on (1) original concept? and he doesnt even site his information either soo...but if you can get him to prove it to mii that will be great =)
v=873iyIM4_8oouthttp://www.giantbomb.com/poison/94-136/
this is another site that explains it too which basically tell us that posion gender is whatever we want it to be(by the words on the creator himself). but all means if you want to think that posion is packin some serious meat downstairs then go ahead do so, who am i to deprive you of your fantasy. i dont really dont give a fk but it bugs mii when some trys to shove the absolute truth down ignorant people mouth. but if your only reason to have her be a man is to fulfill your weirdest fantasy, then just do me a favor dont ever invite me to your bachelor party because i dont want to be the one in for a surprise.

@Necreon: "I knew I shouldn't watch this. Just convinced myself about HER, she is a woman, and now this ruins it. SHE is hot. Period. But saying "he" is hot sounds... ehhhhh....."

The vast majority of such transsexuals would prefer to be referred to with the pronouns of the sex with which they identify. In other words, it's extremely likely that if Poison were a real person, she'd want you to refer to her as "she" and "her."

@bullitt23 "This argument is still going on? Who cares? She's made up, her genitals exist about the same as the easter bunny. Anyone concerned or physically aroused by any cartoon character should seek medical help, or atleast go outdoors for once."

bullitt23, I have bad news for you: if you play these games, let alone click on news stories about videos related to analysis of cast members from the games, you're "concerned."

So by your own logic, you should go outdoors, I guess.

(Me, I'm not a phony who goes on news stories about video games and sneers at people for having an interest in video games, nor do I think the games would be just as good if the characters were all featureless mannequins without histories and national origins and quirks. But that's just me. You? You should.)

What should people be convinced by other than "fact?" The cited concept art appears in multiple Capcom artbooks published both in USA and Japan, as you can easily verify yourself. If you had facts to dispute the video's conclusion, I'd think you'd list them rather than start implying everyone is gay.

How dare anyone get in the way of your gay-panic rage by bringing up inconvenient "facts?"

@ irrenmann - "bullitt23, I have bad news for you: if you play these games, let alone click on news stories about videos related to analysis of cast members from the games, you're "concerned."

Exactly, 100% agreed. That is the most ridiculous argument people use to try to separate themselves from others: "hur-dur you care about imaginary peoples!"

...Well, yeah, I do! I mean really, I didn't play Ninja Gaiden back in the day because I liked getting knocked into pits by random flying eagles, I wanted Ryu to go and kick that Jacquio dude's ass for all the crap he started! I went through hours of Super Metroid hoping to save that little adorable... jellyfish.. creature... thingy.... uh...

Anyway, can't speak for anyone else, but if it weren't for the characters' distinct personalities, I would have little-to-no drive to try to beat Dark Ash's cheap ass in KOF XIII, or learn all of Lei's stances and combos in Tekken 4 and 5...

Some people identify with the character they play or find them awesome. And yes, some of them are created to be attractive. That shouldn't be surprising.

And yes, Poison was created to be extremely attractive to men, solely to cause that mental confusion.

Now to be fair, the extent they've gone through to make her an extremely attractive female in appearance is pretty damn far - there's actual women that would be jealous over that figure. Of course though, this is cartoon exaggeration we're talking about, so they were going to push her sexuality to its limits...

...and hey, it works.

Capcom back peddling like no other. Don't care for Poison and I don't care for the words that come out of Capcom's mouth.
How are they gonna say that she was female in Japan and changed to male in US because of some pissy woman's right activist then all of a sudden concept art magically rises after 20 years to confirm she was always a "newhalf"?

Come on son, get out of here with that bull. Get an art authenticator down there and watch him find the paper this "concept" is on is like 1 month old.
Never seen a company spill so much BS from their mouth than Capcom.

Just stick with the superior Cammy and all will be fine.

@maxs2d2ace: Really?? Why don't you stop taking one piece of information and argue about it so that you can keep your options of Poison being Male/Female at birth in Japan. That is one fact out of 11 that he stated.

Also, he took out 2 that don't have to be there. So taking out your Original art statement, that leaves 8 facts that say she is a Tranny in America and a male in Japan. You took the easiest thing to argue about but not something crucial and 100% fact changing statement.

The thing is, you should watch the whole video and pay attention to the things that cannot be argued like the numerous statements from developers saying that Poison is a new-half/tranny. The reason why Capcom says her gender is Ambiguous
( (of language) Open to more than one interpretation; having a double meaning.
(Unclear or inexact because a choice between alternatives has not been made. )
is because she is a Tranny, she has a "double meaning" and is "unclear" of her real gender. Being a male in japan is one of her gender meaning and being a tranny in america is her other. She basically has alternate egos, but its just gender-wise. Unclear b/c no one really knew that she was originally a male to begin with. There hasn't been made an official gender choice for Poison since she has two alternatives.

Seeing a tranny is confusing if it isn't clear. So when they say Poison is "Ambiguous" it isn't to say she a male/female if you want her to be. Its saying, which ever region you go by is what you will get.

If you want her to be a male with boobs, then head over to the Japan counterpart of Poison. If you want a Tranny, put the voice on english, and there you go, your very own Tranny

Ono can say whatever he wants but that's the fact. It's too bad she's not in more games. I would love to team her up with Benimaru in the next Capcom vs. SNK (note I said Capcom vs. SNK not SNK vs. Capcom). Wrong, and if you watched the video, you'd understand why. She was a newhalf in the original japanese release as well, there was never any change. She was always a newhalf.

Also, beating up a tranny isn't any better than beating up a woman, so that logic shouldn't even make sense.

Nahhh, keep her a girl and this will not change her popularity at all. It's sort of hypocritical to make her more sexy looking than Chun Li and Cammy, if they want her as a transgender give her or it a new look, having more male features. Otherwise I'm just considering the character female because the design of the character doesn't fit at all.

It would be funny if Poison met a gay dude thinking she's transgender and it's revealed that she's 100% woman. She'd just had rumors that she was a transgender lol...I'm kidding.

But regardless, I'm considering the character female because it's not convincing enough to think transgender at all in terms of design regard what her history was. Also why do they keep saying Her, when obvious according to that guy she was originally trans???

@31 and 37 - Oh another two trying to defend they find an imaginary character "hot" or "sexy". Looool

1st thing, i never watched this video and never read the prior comments, the only reason im back is to see what sad hentai lovers come to protect their semi's. And look like i caught some doozies.

2nd thing, I never said being interested with a story was sad or shouldn't be loved. You are either dumb or have a below the average reading age. I love stories in games, hell the character individuality and the story was what first seperated street fighter to any other fighting game. If KOF could design some actually interesting characters, i might see it more than just as a "technically solid game(s)". So your points are invalid to reduce my comment. Never said a story is not interesting or to be loved. You guys are so stupid you could comprehend that if that was true, i wouldnt play games, watch movies or tv series. Nice one dipsh!ts.

What i was talking about being concerned was about the actual sexuality of a madeup character, about 48 comments with people trying to argue this pointless debate out. And guess what? Capcom will never reveal it.

And i sincerely hope the sexually aroused comment stands for itself. Hey guys i heard crayola has had a factory spill and it somewhat resembles a pair of t!ts, anyone interested? Seriously someones paint palette can be "sexy" or "hot"?

Sorry i can't help it but to like my women a little bit more...... real....existent.....not made up of pixels?

(Sorry for yet another epic post but I really love weighing in on these topics.)

The 16-36 year old heterosexual male demographic for fighting games are not the best audience to showcase a transgender character oozing feminine sexuality. The reaction of wanting Poison to be 100% woman is healthy and within the boundaries of normal behavior.

However, there is a larger game at play here; Acceptance.

• History has shown that the first medium to accept and promote gay relationships was in games.

• Where society singles out obesity as shameful; characters like Rufus and Bob have flourished.

• Does anyone recall the first black game character? – probably not because the gaming community would never see skin colour as noteworthy. Such is the absence of race related mentality in games. (there are exceptions to the rule lest we forget Custer’s Revenge)

• Women certainly are objectified and that may be something games will have to deal with one day, but then again conventions are crawling with educated women wearing their favourite heroine’s outfits (much to my pleasure). So I would argue that the view of females in games has been accepted by the community and instead of uproar there is a measured reaction usually of jest.

Kaoh Police represents a strong presence in the tournament scene and stands as a vocal spokesperson for the FGC. Her success shows that transgender people have already been accepted in the hearts of our fraternity. It’s a small step to play as one in a game.

As a proud member of the target demographic of fighting games I look at Poison and think thoughts of a beautiful feminine fighter (looks like a duck, quacks like a duck).

As a proud gamer I welcome the opportunity to once again prove that our community leads the way in social awareness, acceptance and the breaking of unnecessary boundaries.

I would just like to point out, for those that don't realize, the talk about Poison being a transwoman is NOT about her sexuality. It is her gender identity, sexual orientation and gender identity are two COMPLETELY different things. Also the term "shemale" and saying that a transwoman is a man, or saying a transman is a woman for that matter, is quite disrespectful. Shemale is a derogatory term.

Those saying that Poison is a woman are correct, but she was just born in a male body. Female hormones shift the fat in one's body so it is possible for her to have hips, but it would most likely be the case that she got plastic surgery... But she is a fictional character and this honestly should be a non-issue...

I thought this was a funny post and an insightful video. I've been following this since near its inception and have been following fighting games for nearly half my life, but this is first time I've ever felt compelled to post here.

The fact is that a ton of bigotry has been exposed here in the comments, like way more than I feel comfortable not acknowledging. I know it's the internet and whatever and Poison isn't a real person or whatever. But some of the things people in the comments have said are very real, very ugly things that real transgender and transsexual people deal with everyday. No one has to validate their gender for you.

Not to mention, if you're freaking out because a because you worked it to a picture of what looks like a female but isn't, then there is something seriously wrong with you.

She's transgender, deal with it.

And it's okay to think she's attractive, that doesn't mean you're gay. Because let's face it, that's what's makes all these people upset about her.

I'm of the opinion that she's supposed to be ambiguous. What's funny is that she's intentionally made to be extremely attractive just to make people even more hot and bothered about the whole thing.

Seeing as you misconstrued my last post I guess I can also point out your lack of comprehension skills. Find somewhere else to cry. I'm not the one crying "Hormones, yeah right. Why can't she be a woman?". You're in denial as if there is something wrong with the fact that Poison is a male. It's just a video game, she's a post op tranny? Well who cares, as if it were something that didn't exist in real life. Go watch the movie "Beautiful Boxer", this is a fighting game, that movie is based on a real life MT fighter who right now is a post op tranny. It's part of society.

The ignorance and denial in this thread is astounding. Then again, this is the internet. Folks, she's transgender, the evidence is conclusive. Finding her attractive does not make you gay, because she is presented in a clearly feminine design (guess she had a great doctor). Now...deciding that you'd hypothetically hit it anyway? Well I'm not sure where that lands you.

Your the one whom seems to lack comprehension skills to obviously know when i said juri is better character, i mean as in development, not gameplay sun shine.
juri has a back story that still can be explored, and juri gimmick is not only is she sexy but also sadistic. She also has a real martial arts style.
posions character has almost no back story and her gimmick is shes a tranny n sexy that it! with no real fighting style or story.

And i don't need to go posion artcles, when they are on the front page! sun shine. Unless i didn't know i can filter out posion artlces from my page and every other website i visit. And even still people want to slip this debate on streams and random videos and forums.
so please take your moronic self somewhere else.

@32

this is from another guy.
From what I see, the main bit of evidence the video maker has is that bit of concept art with "newhalf" written on it. If he didn't have that, then most of the rest of the argument just falls down into what has been argued for years. Where did he procure that concept art??? I can't find it on the internet myself.

...And the fact that she was labeled as "newhalf" in the Japanese manual, as well as in every appearance she's made. Point being, it wasn't changed because of Us censorship reasons like the deniers insist. She's always officially been trans.

no no no. That is for the console release. The game was released on arcade first. The LEGEND is that she was transformed upon being ported to consoles. Basically everything the guy mentions is redundant EXCEPT that bit of concept art at the beginning. Where he got it from, I don't know. I would just like to know before I confirm her as one or the other. That WOULD put this argument to rest, finally.

and a couple of real critcal thinkers also like myself also wwant to know. alot of people have been looking for that pic so what makes him so spiecal that he got his hands on it? i cant find that concept anywhere either so unless you can show me a link to it, then my mind still remands unchanged. either way her gender is still up to the viewer so HA HA

I have never seen this much Denial from the a community Since Haku in the English dub of naruto was out right said to be a guy.

Guys Poison was born male and is a transgender period and the fact that in her original design docs she was discribed as a newhalf, has been confirmed in every unofficial statement by capcom to be a transgender or a cross dressing dude who straps it down. either way while you might call poison a she, you might think she's hot there was or is a penis there! Just accept it and move on with your lives but saying "Oh why not just call her a girl is" is stupid and TROLLISH!

Dragonite said on February 27, 2012 at 9:24 p.m.

@78- Obviously, you can't find that concept art anywhere because the text is in Japanese. The first place you'd want to look are Capcom's old artbooks for the game, not English sites on the Internet.

But in all seriousness, you don't need to do that anyway. Why are you ignoring the other pieces of evidence presented in this vid? Poison's original bio can be found on the Capcom Classics Collection disc, and THAT was for the arcade version. David Sirlin was in charge of CCC, and he confirmed that the bios were translated directly from Capcom's Jp's archives. Go to his blog and ask him. He'll tell you the same thing.

And while you're at it, find a good Japanese speaker and ask Akiman on his blog what Poison is. He created her, and he'll tell you she was always meant to be a tranny.

After reading all these comments, I have to shake my head at the eventhubs community. Not accepting the fact that Poison is a man is just sad. And to those of you who think that a man cant look like a woman with hormone therapy and a little surgery are sadly mistaken. There is an article in a teenie magazine about a Transgendered Male that would have every last one of you fooled. She (because thats how he refers to himself) has had no surgery at all and has only taken hormone pills since the age of 17. During the article she was 21 and going to college and all that jazz. Point being is that its very much possible. To further prove my point I have something for you all who can't quite grasp the notion

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/world/20...

And to do you all a favor before you click the link, ALL OF THEM ARE MEN. After seeing that if you cant believe that Poison is a male who wanted to be female, then I don't know what else I could say except continue living in your bubble and do not be surprised when that bubble bursts

@81 Yes biologically she was born male, but I wasn't stating that as an argument. Simply I was just saying that if she identifies as a woman, then we all should respect that fact and NOT call her by male pronouns and call her a man. That is disrespectful to her as a transwoman, this is coming from someone who has many trans friends and is in the LGBT "community", so I'd appreciate it if you would not call me a retard. There is no need to be rude at all. Once again I completely understand we are talking about a fictional character, but we still need to respect all walks of life.

If all you care about is the physical features of a character then you honestly are no better off then the people who wanted a black barbie then got mad when one was made but she didn't have fuller lips and more coarse hair. The fact that you cant accept that the CREATOR of the character has already stated that she is a man is even worst. If the creator wants it to be a boy, and said named creator has all the creative freedom of pen and paper, then guess what, its a boy. Take it as it is, and move on

You really notice member's true colors in here.

I watched and loved the video despite well knowing that Poison was in fact a newhalf. It was more informative and deep than I realized with Roxy being THE SAME "Woman" or more so Character, who has the virtual vagina between her legs but wasn't exactly popular enough to be more than a color change for the Beautiful Poison, just as she's been since the beginning.

I for one would welcome a completely copied Poison model, decked out differently of course, with a new voice actor and personality so Roxy could be an addition as possible future DLC to SfxT. R n' P, the Illest and Realest combination since Final Fight that Stubborn Fanfapperz will NEVER get over.

Even after people watch the video, people deny that she was always a male to start with. Made the same replies as in the video like hotpinkfighter did #42: First, I love Poison! She is my avatar on PSN. Secondly, Poison has always been a woman. It was only Capcom USA who changed her to a shemale cuz it was wrong in America to beat up girls. Ono can say whatever he wants but that's the fact."

People need to not take part of facts and argue about it. The original game in Japan, Final Fight, She was a male with some fake boobs(they could be real, idk the extent of the meaning new-half) so saying turning her back to what she was b4 would be changing her back to a male. She is a Tranny, not a shemale, in America. She got that dick changed into a fake-me-out Vagina. Unless you are gay like that and really want her to be 100% male, you can enjoy the original Poison with her creator.
