The Beast is unleashed explained: EVO moment #37 analysis by Seth Killian

Posted by Catalyst

Often voted the most memorable moment in competitive gaming, EVO moment #37 is a clip seen by countless gamers.

Penny Arcade decided to consult with Capcom's Seth Killian to break down what was actually happening in the infamous MCZ|Daigo (Ken) vs. EG|Justin Wong (Chun-Li) match, back before these guys even had acronyms before their names. Here's a snip from the piece.

“Justin had developed this style with Chun-Li where he played very conservatively,” Killian explained. “He’s trying to do nothing and say look, Chun-Li’s options in this game are so safe that I don’t actually need to do anything to attack. I can just whittle you down until I win.”

Not only was this a sound, if slightly lame, strategy, it was working against one of the best players in the world. Umehara tends to be a much more aggressive player, and the strain of playing against Wong’s ultra-conservative Chun-Li was beginning to show. “Daigo, in rare form, actually seemed to be upset. He was playing recklessly,” Killian said. “This is one of the joys of fighting game play, you can actually put someone off their game, and get into their head until they start making mistakes.”

To do that in a tournament setting especially the biggest tournament for the scene is a huge deal and will always be awesome. Obviously you weren't there. I wasn't but this moment is just as awesome as the first time I watched it.

@#1 Go kill yourself.

I agree with #2 (except I dont wish for you to kill yourself).

I have yet to watch this without a smile creeping upon my face. Its just a good moment. Who cares if Daigo didnt win the tournament. When people show highlights in sports history, they dont just show the moments of Superbowl or world cup, etc champions, they show ALL the good moments.

I say let this moment show up whenever it wants. I personally welcome it... Whether he won the whole thing or not does not make this moment any less special. I hope to be as good as any of these guys and even perhaps have an EVO like moment of my own.

first of all

"Justin had developed this style with Chun-Li where he played very conservatively,” Killian explained. “He’s trying to do nothing and say look, Chun-Li’s options in this game are so safe that I don’t actually need to do anything to attack. I can just whittle you down until I win."

"Both players understood that Wong had to attack to win, and it was at this moment that Umehara found his strategy."

what kind of bs is that? justin was just reckless one pixel to win this match.. AAAAAATTACK!!

@5 yes there are but not on this circumstances it's gaming history and i can watch it forever

this makes me think the rumors are true...... seths killians a fu*king robot that capcom produced in order to tame the fighting game community.

@7 Bro, go to youtube and look up parries made by top 3rd strike players. Daigo is not even on their level in 3rd Strike. Kuroda, Kokujin (who beat the livging s--t out of Daigo),J, watch those Players. Kuroda, beat Justin Wong like a child with Q. People that go to this site and talk like you are the reason why people stay at the same level. They know nothing about fighters and are garbage. They see Daigo and nut on the screen. But he has been getting his a$$ beat. Hasnt even won a Godsgarden tourney, but everyone is stuck on this moment. Pespond to this if you want, I'm not even reading Eventhub comments anymore.

This was actually voted the best moment in competitive gaming history PERIOD. I'd like to see footage of someone Doing something like this in semi finals with a pixel left at Evo. In 2004, stop hating. It was plain surgical the jump for extra meter and the right combo to finish it. You people act like all of those variables and quick thinking were not impressive. He probably thought of that all during the super flash because parrying that super takes massive concentration.

You know that I don't like this game, but people still got to recognize that it was the greatest moment in competitive gaming history.

The reason why it was so groundbreaking:
- It was a comeback
- It was highly unexpected
- It required a great feat of skill and concentration (All the noise and he didn't drop it)
- It was a top-tier character getting wrecked
- The crowd getting super hyped

lol at people saying there were better parries that existed. sure they do but its the atmosphere and setting that counts. for example mr. otaku dude sitting in his ass in a quit room online on tuesday night playing this can suddenly parry a necro super full and punish or get two perfects without breaking a sweat, but hello sunshine forgot to factoring the psychological factor in these big tourney scenes where you literally put everything out in line outside your preffered comfort zone and the reason why this was special is pretty much the factors explained by #22. not being a daigo or justin wong nut hugger or whatever but give credit where its due. and rather have some of this "2004 crap" then some of these recent 2012 crap lol

Its funny that people now consider Daigo a "turtle" and Justin Wong "rush down" when it was the opposite back then. Case in point Daigo's Balrog from ST. Keep in mind this game takes way more skill than SF4 and Daigo's opponent is using a character that is ridiculously more overpowered than any character people nowadays whine about in the SF4 series:

bananainsaneface said on February 25, 2012 at 3:23 a.m.

Another thing to point out about this moment was that Justin had no clue Daigo was going to parry that Super because at the time in the US people weren't even attempting to parry full supers they didn't even know it was possible (thats how huge the skill gap was in this game). Thats why the crowd got so hyped because they witnessed something extraordinary when in reality Japanese players had been doing it regularly. Thats why when asked about this moment Daigo doesn't even consider it a big deal.

ppl need to understand that this took place in a tournament setting..and during EVO no less..the pressure is intense and daigo still managed to pull that parry off and make the comeback on none other than justin wong..sure there have been better parrys but not on a stage like evo.. this vid is legendary.

I don't understand what Seth is saying about the read. I know he was spacing himself perfectly, but he said that you have to parry before the super..? This doesn't seem true, as you can parry after the super flash in the training mode of SF3 on Xbox.

It's not just about the parry, it's about the setting and the timing. Anyone can parry in training mode.

But Daigo has no life and Justin felt confident enough to just chip him away because of all the hits the super art does. No one expected him to be able to parry the entire super, but he did. When he needed to, because he has foresight and predicted what Justin would do before he did it. A great combination of experience and anticipation. It's a special moment, period.

I am so sick and tired of this video, can't people understand this "great" moment was just a fluke due to a BROKEN mechanic? Parries are broken, why? Cause you SHOULDN'T be able to parry a Super. It doesn't make sense, what's the point of a Super then? That's like Focus Attacking one hit Ultras and get away safe, it would be cheap as hell. If Parries wouldn't been broken, we all know this would NEVER have happened. SF3 is broken as hell and sucks. You should be able to parry most moves, but in no way EX or Supers, it's just stupid and broken. One of the main reasons why I never liked SF3, besides most of the unlikable cast.

What people seem to not understand is that when Daigo played 3S he was one of the best players. How the f*ck can you compare a '2004 Daigo' to a '2012 Kuroda'?! Are you people f*cking stupid? Who was Kuroda back in 2004?

Common sense anyone?! It was 2004...the game wasn't as explored and the players weren't as trained as now...LOGICALLY...I'm a huge Kuroda fan myself, but you people think he could've done the same back in 2004 -under the same circumstances?
I've seen Kuroda get chipped so many times by supers that are way easier to parry.

@32 (bananainsaneface) Balrog (Boxer) and Dhalsim are considered by both U.S. and Japanese circles to be very top tier in ST.

Only the U.S. considers O.G. Sagat in the very top tier. While Japan believes Vega (Claw) to be in that very top tier.

The Balrog - O.G. Sagat matchup is by no means skewed in Sagat's favor. It can be tough when Sagat can succesfully keep Balrog across the screen, but if Balrog gets in or if Balrog charges his super, the game completely changes.

Either way though, like you mentioned, comboing supers in ST is much harder to do than other games. In fact ST has a built in mechanic where you aren't supposed to be able to cancel into supers from rapid fire moves and have to be "tricked".

I also agree that from EVO 2004, I was on my feet in the crowd when this happened, shouting to the guy next to me, "THAT IS NOT EASY TO DO!"

@38 (ElectricBlanka): I was at this tournament in the front row. I remember the Japanese were in a sectioned off area in front of me on the right. They seemed somewhat amused during the parry but didn't really clap and cheer until Daigo did the jump parry to get full damage for the win.

Where is this article about Tokido? I'm kinda puzzled that he would say that this was what inspired him to get better at SF since he was already very well established by this point.

In fact, most American's already knew him from back in EVO 2002 when he went to town on Justin's Chun Li with his Urien in the 2002 5 on 5 USA vs Japan Invitational Tournament.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1r82k...

Also I remember Onuki saying that Tokido was already considered one of the 3 "gods" of SF for a long while. It was in discussion of Sako being the "4th child" (NGE reference?) that he mentioned that Tokido was already established as the "3rd child". This was back when he first met Sako at a Vampire Savior tournament which I'd assume was a good while before 2004.

@39 (Jandro83) Dude 3S isn't Scrub Fighter 4 where people regularly throw out random super or random DP like nothing.

In 3S supers, were comboed into or used to punish unsafe moves. It's laughable that you'd make a complaint of "what is the point of supers" with regards to 3S.

3S is extremely meter management oriented. A Chun with SA2 loaded and ready to go must be treated very differently from one that isn't.

Yun Genei Jin finishers, attack strings, and pressure that built more meter were vital to a Yun player's repetoire in order to activate "god mode status" quicker.

Hmm hype parries in a large tournament setting? I'd add Hayao consecutive red parries to SPD against KO at SBO.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-2ZiW...

The second red parry was life and death since KO would have had Genei Jin activated if he connected. Honsetly though, it wasn't just the parries that made that match so hype but the combination of everything.

I'd link the "Can't Beat Hayao" hype video, but the Urien cosplay is kinda too disturbing.
