MastaCj should have been disqualified the movement he refused to play that match. The tourney doesn't resolve around him and I agree with #14. If Justin gets a yellow card for not playing serious and Marlinpie gets DQ for being late to a match then MastaCj should be DQ. I mean you lose to a nemesis player you have to hold DAT s**t and learn the match up better SMH.

with all that nerf from wolverine and all that tricky tech stuff from jwong (actually from ricky ortiz), he just made wolverine all look top tier again and made the IMPOSSIBLE WIN against a lame ass all zone bore me to death chrisfrauds's morrigan! (i will also include deiminion for starting this lame discovery), in the end true skills and focus triumph while chrisfraud losing composure cost him the whole game!

There's only one question you need to ask to find out which game was more hype at any US major: "Did the major attract international players?"

Answer: yes -> Dat Street Fighter hype
Answer: no -> Dat Marvel hype

@ 41

I think your logic is flawed. If you ask me which game is more popular world-wide, I will definitely say SFIV. However, you're talking about the US, which means the total number of views clearly shows Marvel is more popular.

The reason why we fly international players here to compete is because they are better than us. What's the point of flying international Marvel players here when it's obvious they will just be bodied. The US is the best at Marvel just as Japan is the best at SFIV.

Also, internationally, Mahvel is starting to get hyped. The WGC stream last night had about a 1000 views for UMVC. It was during 2 am where I lived.

@#46 i think people don't watch AE because there is no jp players. Godsgraden tournaments has has over 25k all the time.

in WCG, more people watch AE than umvc3. AE had like 3 times more viewer than umvc3. lol

Canada Cup, AE beats mvc3 in viewers, too.

Marvel got more views at one major, so it's clearly the most popular game? No. Street Fighter has pretty consistently drawn more views at majors since Marvel came out, especially when international players are present.

scytheavatar said on February 19, 2012 at 10:48 p.m.

Why did Juicebox get 2nd in AE? I though he was going on about how much AE sucks, how godlike KOFXIII is and how everyone needs to stop playing AE and start playing KOFXIII?

#52
Default avatar
crispylinks77 said on February 19, 2012 at 11:36 p.m.

@ 51

My bad, you guys are not understanding the point I'm making. In the US, Marvel is more popular than SFIV. In every major tourney that only has US players, Marvel draws a bigger crowd and gets more views.

Spooky even said on stream that he wanted to put Marvel on the stream because people want to see that. He coordinates everything so him saying that means a lot.

Now with that said. I'm not saying AE is bad or that it's not popular. It has a great following and it is a more popular game worldwide. In my honest opinion though, I believe the only time AE gets more views than UMVC in a US tourney is if international players are there. If Daigo, Tokido, Poongko, etc aren't around, less people watch.

#53
Default avatar
crispylinks77 said on February 19, 2012 at 11:45 p.m.

@ 51 and 46

Think about it. Spotlessden said it himself. Less people watch because there are no international players.

Why do you think people like watching Justin Wong vs. Daigo or Poongko? It's America vs. Japan and America vs. Korea. It gets people hyped. Everyone has pride in their own countries.

Now think about Marvel. There is absolutely no point in bringing international players to the US. They will get bodied. Because of this, there is no international hype that AE can get.

Tokido brings hype for almost every game, including Mahvel. CEO'11 was one of the best tourneys for me because of him.

But yeah, other than him there's no one else at the moment, though there are very good players from Japan as well but not everyone can get sponsored just like that or is interested to make trips abroad just to compete.

Noel lost in singles, I forget to whom.
Masta CJ made it to loser's finals in his pool but lost to Blacktastic?
Yipes DQed himself because he wasn't feeling well (or hungover).
Flocker lost in pools, and he doesn't run phoenix.
Sanford was eliminated by Floe.

Too bad Justin couldn't finish it style with is Iron fist team. Love that character though it clearly shows us how vulnerable iron fist is to a great combination of a zoning team.

Then again it's Morrigan with the lame Sh#t that is starting to get really annoying. Then again that combination of Morrigan with Dooms hidden missles defense is tough to break open in the first place.

I like the fact that Morrigan is being used more and in some effective ways but as many said she shouldn't be able gain meter in here illusion form.

Where are the Spencer players? Combofiend could have represented him really well. Nice to see Super-Skrull up there too.

Man huge props to Justin for this win. I know he's won Marvel majors before and probably against stiffer competition but this tournament looked like it belonged to Chris G from the start. No one had an answer for that lame ass Morrigan strategy and while I have absolutely no respect for the strat itself, I respect the ability it takes to pull it off at that high of a level. The entire tournament I was watching player after player run into that gauntlet of soul fists and come out the other end chipped and beaten to death, all the meanwhile thinking 'I wonder what Justin will do?' We got our answer. There is a reason he is Justin Wong; he adapts on the fly, he does what others can only hope to do and he does it when it matters most.

My brother has absolutely no interest in fighting game tournaments but he plays games like Third Strike and UMvC3 with me because he likes video games overall. Last night, when the finals came around I called him into my room to show him not only the lame ass strategy but to show him Justin Wong and the way he would react to it. Needless to say we were both blown away. The way he seemed to adapt with every game getting closer and closer not letting Chris G get any space to mount an offense just seemed like textbook Justin. The entire tournament I wondered what he would do to beat that strategy and I'm glad he delivered. Like I said, he's won Marvel majors before but this one has to be pretty damn satisfying.

@53

Nah, I understand the point your making, I just think you're wrong. I've been following the scene pretty closely since MvC3 came out, and I would give a slight edge to Street Fighter in terms of viewer numbers and the definite edge to Street Fighter in terms of competitor numbers.

Just look at EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament of the year. Street Fighter entrants well out-numbered Marvel entrants, and the Street Fighter finals out-drew Marvel handily in terms of viewer numbers.

If ChrisG wants to be recognized for his skills, he needs to stop using a lame glitch to win his games. He looked completely lost after morrigan was figured out and defeated. pathetic.

Thx for the memo.

As for the people hating on Chris G, you really should give him props for being the player that he is. He is not conventional, and he isn't trying to run the same team and strategy like a robot. I hope he sticks with Morrigan, he's Morrigan has improved tenfold, I remember watching his Morrigan with his Phoenix team and it was painful because she is one of my favorite characters, and I main her on my Akuma/Storm/Mor team. Being lame means that you need to be great at reading the opponent and develop great defense.

ppl hating on chris G fail to realize the fact that hes playing an oddball team and winning with it. that morrigan zoning aint easy. u mess up once the entire lock down is done. also he could easily replace akuma for somone else who goes better with doom missiles.

1st i hate dieminion for discovering this sh*t
2nd i hate chrisg for using this lame tactic
3rd i think this is a broken mechanic for morrigan for gaining meter on her astral vision super

i think if the astral vision doesnt gain any meter and chrisg still use her on that way i think he wont get bashed for it bcuz since that broken mechanic is gone and he is mostly playing a true legit way and skills to win

think of this... if u can gain meter from all this super/hyper buffs: devil trigger, spiral swords, shadow clone, ouruboros, luminous body, rimoukon, golden armor, hado kakusei ...dont u think its a broken mechanic in the game?

@ 66

The thing with EVO though, I wouldn't consider it a strict US tourney. We fly international players here all the time. Last year had Fuudo, Tokido, Poongko, Daigo, Momochi, that one fat guy, and so on. So like I said previously, having those international players brings extra hype, which tips it in SFIV's favor.

Also, when it comes to games with a huge following like UMvC and SFIV, the number of entrants don't tell the whole story. You have to realize that SFIV is an easier game to play. I'm not talking about combos, I'm talking about the overall mechanics of the game. Realistically, there are more people who are good at SFIV than there are people who are good at UMvC.

So of course SFIV may have more entrants in tournaments.
