@#1 It is an option that existed in games since I don't remember when.
Cheating = Turbo =/= Button Mappings

Stick is better because its way more universal. Yes i know people can buy converters but not everyone has one and also if you go to an arcade what will you do??

We need a pad with the PS3 control pad, 6 face buttons of regular size and 2 shoulder button (R1 like) on the "RIGHT" side of the pad... I have being waiting years for someone to make a controller like that but no one got the idea... shoulder buttons at the left are so useless in fighting games and probably just useful for Zero's players that charge mega buster even dough it will be more comfortable to charge using a right shoulder button.

Anyway I got a TE stick and learned to use it but my reaction times are not as good as in pad also do shoryuken to the left is painful and difficult for me also dash to the left using double tap is difficult in stick.

I migrated from the pad to the stick and I am still better with doing rekkas and other motions with the pad. I haven't to the pad because the stick is much more convenient in terms of button layout but overall the pad is much more ergonomic and my execution is best there as well.

However, I want to get good with stick better with the stick so I train and I still train almost everyday and hopefully my execution will mirror the pad, but the pad is still more ergonomic than the stick.

@#7 Kurow. There is a pad like the one you mentioned. I also did a pad review a while back and I will update it with the New SFxT pads and MLG pad http://dominionmethodgaming.com/2011/...

It's all about practice, plain and simple. Couldn't agree more.

I use both actually - stick for most 2D fighters and pad for 3D fighters and Marvel. At first I was falling into the "I need to use stick for everything" trap but now I realize it was just me being ass. XD

Im a pad user too and I agree with most people on here with the whole "stick with what you know" and "practice makes perfect" sayings. If anyone says you need to use stick in order to be better or stick players are ultimately better than pad players someone please tell that to Alioune or Vangief. They can do what ever a stick player does on pad and are/were considered top players.

Practice makes perfect... No doubt. In the hands of an experienced killer a spoon may be more lethal than a knife. That being said, both (stick and pad) have there advantages.

Pad:

3x mapped = easier charging for moves. I.E Zonk Knuckle or Balrog TAP.

Smaller distance for the D-pad to cover. I.E smaller button presses = quicker movement and reactions.

Relatively low cost

Stick:

Access to every button all at once using all four fingers and thumb on your right hand vs your thumb and index fingers on the pad.

Higher quality components = less wear and tear = less time repairing your stick. Pads have rubber depressors underneath the buttons, serious players know that thousands of matches wear these bad boys out. This can lead to replacement or hunting for repair parts.

Expensive. (I mod them for fun$$$)

I think these days it's pointless to argue which is better especially with players like Wolfkrone & Fanatiq placing in majors. I switched to stick about 2 years ago & i was awful, i couldn't jump properly, move properly, hit basic combo's etc but 2 years later i love stick, it's not really about which is better but stick just "feels right" to me. I couldn't go back to playing pad now, if anyone does decide to change to stick you're better off leaving pad alone completely, getting frustrated & switching between the two will hinder your progress.

@Aluppoj 3xpunches doesn't help with charging zonk because you will lose the use of all 3 punch buttons as opposed to losing 1 punch button for regular zonk or 2 for ex.

I think in terms of execution the stick is better. tight links and weird button combinations are just easier on a stick, but for movement and reaction the pad is easier. I played both, started on a pad, moved to a stick, then i broke it and didnt feel like making a new one for a while and played on pad again, and a few weeks ago i made a stick again and im playing on it since. And i think you can overcome the weaknesses of the tool with practice, but i feel like some things you learn easier and faster based on the tool you are using. But it also depends on the game, i think king of fighters is harder to play with pad and in tekken its easier to play with a pad, compared to a stick. Street fighter and Marvel vs Capcom are right in the middle.

@the_truth - I agree for the most part: if you're going to stick to one or the other, stick to it and don't try to switch just because you lose or because someone else says to do it. Only helps the frustration.

My primary motivation for learning stick was SF - particularly Juri. I could not play her on pad - storing/swapping was not fun to do without easy access to all the buttons. Couldn't play charge characters well either, though that was just years of my own bad execution.

On the other hand, sometimes you may find one works for one game and not so well for others. I tried playing Tekken on stick but it just requires way too much tapping, especially with dash canceling.

Of course, that's my experience, the little bit I have. XD

Fanatiq is right.
The proof is, now that I have no means to play on consoles, I've getting my SF4 fix on the iPad. Guess what? After enough practice I'm doing 10x hit combos with Viper, including c.Hp, Special cancel, c.Hp, Ex Seismic Hammer, S.j.c., burning kick, into Ultra.

I just hate that I retaught myself to play on a 6 face button controller, and now I can't really play SF4 on a 4 face button controller, my brain and muscle memory always cause me to mess up during advanced combos that require FADC and Ex specials...

I too decided to switch from pad to stick after I wanted to start taking SF4 more seriously last year. After waiting for months to get my HRAP, I went to training mode and could not for the life of me play with the stick. It was frustrating because I felt I had to start all over again. But when I finally can find some time from work to hop on SF I continue to hit the training mode to work on gettting a feel for the stick. I love the button layout. It is much easier for me to FADC on stick than on pad and normals come out better IMO. Only prob for me is it is a struggle for me to consistently perform senkus, kongos, and fireballs.

Make a long story less boring, like everyone says, go with what is comfortable with you. I do go back to pad once in a while when I play SF, but I am getting used stick and eventually will only use pad for non-fighting games.

It's hard to prove or disprove because you either have players who learned to play on pad going to stick or vice versa. There's always a starter bias when you take already established players and move them to a different scheme.

Unless you can do some kind of study with gamers who've never used neither pad or stick, the debate is always going to rage whether it really is better to play on one control scheme or the other.

Practice makes perfect, however there are two, real tangible difference on stick versus pad.

The pad has the plus in that it takes less motor movement to move your character on the screen. Things like dashing forward -> -> are easier on the pad. It's easier for me to hit the space bar with my thumb than it would be for me to pull a lever each time I wanted a space in this paragraph.

The joystick has the distinct advantage in the button department. The only game where I think the stick has a huge advantage over the pad is in SF4 or any other game where p-linking is a must have skill.

All that being said, practice makes perfect. Someone can say "What about Wolfkrone?" ... well he's a beast and he's at the top of the curve of skill in a pool of players that dwarfs the size of the basketball players in the NBA. Someone saying "Wolfkrone does it" is like saying shooting a basketball with broken fingers is easy because Kobe Bryant does it almost all season. They're the best for a reason, whether it's God given and *mostly* hard work/practice.

Nice. I'm glad to hear that. You should do a YouTube review of the pad and have Catalyst post it here on EH.

I have a feeling there are a bunch of guys in your situation that may not be aware of this product.

Pads and stick are not the same. They can be equal in performance but rarely when you consider things like comfort, familiarity, character, game system, long-term effect, size of your hand and etc.

However, arcades around the world are dying. So, maybe it's time to abandon the expensive and chunky fight stick for the default pad.

#29 Hopefully thats never going to happen. And Arcade Sticks arent more expensive then controllers, thats just short sighted, in the long run Arcade sticks are cheaper most of the time they are more robust and its cheaper to replace stuff. Also, Arcades arent dying at all. The home of Street Fighter and the home of the most established Street Fighter players has a great arcade scene.

Couldnt agree more from what fanatiq said about "stick to what your good at" im also a pad player i use Chun-Li on pad and its just awsome. I dont know if any of u guys remember but Shizza(former Chun SSF4 player) was owning people using a pad and placed top 8 at EVO 2010(or maybe it was 2009 im not sure but i think it was 2010) so Pad or Stick practice with what your comfortable with.
