Asked about why video game companies are so secretive, Capcom USA vice president, Christian Svensson, explained some of the reasoning about why they hold their cards so close to their chest. He also responded about when gamers might see another Final Fight title and who's in charge of DLC for their titles.
Why is the video game industry so secretive? — Turian
• Some companies want to keep things secret because of what happened with Mega Man Legends 3, they don't like disappointing customers.
• Companies want to keep that "first in the market" approach. If Capcom came up with a great idea (even if it wasn't used), then the last thing they want is a competitor taking the idea, manipulating it enough to avoid the appearance of "stealing" it and then beating Capcom at their own game with a "better" idea coming out first.
• When you give detailed status updates about a project to the public, then you're essentially giving them permission to criticize your work, which can be good or bad.
• Some companies use secrecy as a hype building machine. Giving you enough to be interested but leaving you hungry for more info. — VegaMan
Svensson: All of those are reasons are true VegaMan and with regard to the original poster, I'm not certain that any business is more open with its decision making processes than those in the videogame industry. Secrets can provide a competitive edge. They can also obscure mistakes.
There are loads of games you've never heard of... and probably never will, from publishers and developers across the whole industry (not just Capcom). And there are often good reasons for that, both business and creative.
If anything, you might say that Capcom has been "too open" in that we have at times announced our games too early, occasionally before we're even in full production (maybe pre-production, prototype/vertical slice development, etc.). And when it doesn't work out, for whatever reason, the backlash is greater than it would be than if you never knew the product was in development.
How likely do you think it is that Capcom will revisit the Final Fight series in a meaningful way? — Soapy
Svensson: I think we need to do more groundwork to bring up awareness of the characters before something like this could be meaningfully considered. The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Haggar) and Super Street Fighter 4 (Cody and Guy) additions were steps in the right direction, though.
Who is specifically is in charge of the marketing and choosing DLC for games like SFxT, SSF4 AE, etc.? — Edmanr2003
Svensson: It's ultimately decided producer by producer. No single person for all games.
Will the PC version of SFxT receive nVidia 3D Vision support? — DarkSamus
Svensson: Potentially... it's under discussion.
everytime i read anything about legends 3 i ask myself why didnt they bring him from tvc. He was so good and could've had some more weapons. Also, about the final fight, the drm on ps3 is so dumb. If they decide to make a new ff, i dont mind if it has the same arcade graphics. Id like it to be as long as castle crashers
Makes you wonder if Mega Man fans would still be so outraged at everything Capcom does now had it been scrapped before fans knew a thing.
The prospect of that is just as much of a preferable "what-if" to me as Legends 3 having been actually completed. :/

I'm ok with this.
I feel that when correct information about your game gets leaked, you can't just sit there and ignore it, then be disappointed because no one is surprised or they're outraged at the result.
Lupinko leaked Ultimate Marvel months before it was announced, and Capcom just kept telling everyone to "be patient" when asked about DLC, which caused customers to give up on the franchise entirely.
If Cody/Guy Elena/Christie end up being DLC as predicted, there will be even more fan backlash. Although it's a lose/lose situation, I think they'd lose much less if they were just up front with us to begin with.
I downloaded Final Fight 1, 2, and 3 this morning. WEIRD!!
@16
I'm not!
I'm not a fanboy.... Well kinda. But the fine folks at Capcom have been making my favorite games since my parents bought me MegaMan 1 on the NES! Lol, I used to walk three miles to my local 7/11 with a pocket full of quarters to play the SF2 cab they had in the back! (spamming Honda Headbutts on the CPU ftw, hey I was like 11)
Ah the good ol days.
I'll show them some loyalty.
A new Final Fight would be cool, but I don't think that there's a lot of hunger for the beat-em-up genre at the moment. It would have to be very innovative to stay competitive.
Ha! EHubs used my Final Fight pic I had Chamba Cruz draw (commission) ^_^ you guys have good taste I see
Probably my fanboyism leaking out here (and the fact that I loved the soundtrack), but I played the sh!t out of Streetwise. I mean, fvck Kyle, but I did play that game heavily back in the day.
@17
I'd be hard to do anything but ignore the leaks. I'm sure they're under some sort of schedule and they release info periodically so that people stay interested and so they can show things as they finish them. They probably have the list or most of the list of characters thought up before they even start. What are they going to do when that list is leaked? They sure as hell can't show gameplay of the leaked characters before they're implemented into the engine. If they say, ''yeah, that's the list of characters we're gonna use'' then the hype is killed and they screw themselves on time. They can at least hope that there are still some people who haven't seen the list.
By the way, customers will ALWAYS whine no matter what. If they admit that the list is correct then there will be less relevant reveals/info before the game is out and that will probably lead to a long gap of time with nothing being said about the game and people whining about ''old news''. People will whine about the lack of new info.
A new fully 3D Final Fight would be great. As much as I appreciate them staying 2d with SF4 and MVC3 (as they really wouldn't work any other way), I know for a fact Capcom is capable of making a good 3D action game (DMC being the paramount example). Plus, seeing a new 3d brawler (rather than a hack n' slash) would be great, as there are few in this day and age.
Think about it, there could be three characters (preferably Guy, Cody, and Haggar), with extensive and unique move sets for each (like Ryu from Ninja Gaiden), an upgrade system for special moves and combos (in lieu of new weapons), and some minor movesets for acquirable weapons such as a pipe or katana. Build a good Online Co-Op system, throw in a bunch of nostalgic references to past Final Fight games, and there you go.
Oh and also make Hugo/Poison secret unlockable characters.

cough MaXplosion cough
I think with the digital release of Final Fight and the many Final Fight characters in recent and upcoming games people probably are aware of Final Fight. I think the difficult thing is making a brawler compelling. Maybe something akin to Shank.
"for godsake, change cody's official costume"
I agree, unless the chains are used in combat.
@ aluppoj um it was like 3 blocks away dude. And even then all u did was throw spam! I was playing @ major magics on the big 2 button cab b4 most of these kids were even semen!
Final fight!? Eww gross!
I see Lotsa variety on psn! Of course I see my share of ryu but I fight a lot of characters like hakan gen guy rose, depends a lot on what time I play too tho.
A final fight title with a 2D fighting game in there as well. Some how. Final Fight style battles. I dunno but think of the DLC , gems and Final Fight mad catz sticks / fightpads you could sell capcom.
