Re-release of PS2 version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 is all that's likely for the foreseeable future

Re-release of PS2 version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 is all that's likely for the foreseeable future Some fans had been hoping that the recent announcement of Capcom vs. SNK 2's re-release would open the door for a more full featured port, including HD graphic filters, online play and similar things that Capcom's other recently re-released fighters had picked up.

Christian Svensson kept things on the level today though, stating outright on the Capcom Boards that a re-release of the PS2 version (see straight port) is all that's likely to happen in the foreseeable future.

HiryuMK: Will there be a Capcom vs. SNK 2: Online Edition like Street Fighter 3 Third Strike received? I know there supposedly was a PS2 classic coming later, but I am sure the fans will rather have an ''Online Edition'' with upgraded visuals, online, trophies and challenges like what SF3 3s & Marvel vs. Capcom Origins got.

Svensson: A re-release of the PS2 version is all that is likely in the foreseeable future.

Kinda sucks, but what can you do... we don't know how difficult it is behind the scenes (licensing etc.), let's hope the survey will be of some use.

Is online play REALLY that crucial to people nowadays?

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer playing with people face-to-face. It could also stem from the fact that all my online experiences have been dismal thus far.

Yes I'm asking a question like that really. Is that a problem?

Bear in mind I'm 32 and have been around Street Fighter all its life. No one complained about online play when Super Turbo came out, or Alpha 3, or 3rd Strike. But like I said, I'm old fashioned. Some of us just like to do more than wait to get kicked out of a lobby.

While I share your sentiment, the reality is there simply aren't many places these days for people to play face-to-face. Arcades are few and far between, leaving only the option of meeting someone at their home, which is something hard to do, depending on your schedule/situation.
Online play, while annoying at times, is not only a viable substitute, but, is considered a necessary standard for anything to do relatively well, sales wise, these days.

The process
1) Find an old retro Capcom fighting game
2) Pretend you played it for hours and have fond memories of it
3) 2010 onwards: Pester the crap out of Capcom about it and even make petitions saying you want it
4) Find out it's being released as a HD remake. Beat your meat
5) Buy it day 1 and play it for a month
6) Go back to Street Fighter 4 never to bother with it again. Game dies. Throw it in the pile with every other HD re-release*SLASH*Remake on XBLA*SLASH*PSN.

So yeah Capcom you lazy bums, get making our CVS2! It'll be worth the money and your time.

Oh well, if that's were it stays then o well. I would still buy it cause I just recently played it for the first time so I would still have fun with it. Online would be preferred but it is what it is.

Very well, point taken. As a resident of Dallas it sucks that there's not a lot of arcades to choose from here, and I can agree that online does mitigate that.

Call me cynical, but what does it matter if a game only gets widely played for, say, a year or so, if people buy it and if it's profitable?
... Wait, that sounds like Call of Duty...

Online is pretty much the only replay value left for Fighting Game for console only players. I have been playing SF4 since it's release and still playing today with SSFIV:AE thanks to the Online, I barely get lags and still have a easy time finding opponents.

I only have my brother to play offline multiplayer since all my friends aren't that good and stopped playing. It does get boring fighting always my brother's main & subs. Online give me that variety.

Mortal Kombat, I loved the game but the Online is pathetic and pretty much killed the replay value, I haven't touched it since my 3rd Online experience with it.

I was hoping for a CvS2:OE because of the 3 Capcom games back in the PS2 time, its was that one I spent more time with, I wasn't a fan of 3rd Strike or MvC2.

People need to get on that recent survey and vote for a CvS2 re-release/re-make etc. This is our chance to finally get this game after years and years of requests. HD would be a plus. But if they kept the original graphics and added online features I will be satisfied. COME ON CAPCOM!!!!!

Call me newfangled, but I prefer the online option nowadays in fighting games as the golden standard for multiplayer. As my brothers and an increasing number of my friends have grown sick and tired of fighting games in general, I pretty much have to fight strange randoms online to get my fix. Otherwise, I don't really need any cosmetic touchups (seriously, can you do an HD embellishment of Morrigan's supremely nasty sprite?).

Catch-22

Online sucks, so you're forced to play offline modes.
Offline modes are lacking.

Offline modes are of plenty, play offline mode.
Less players go online.

I love CvS2, but at the same time I hate it for how awfully imbalanced the cast is, especially on the SNK side, majority of the SNK characters are just really weak with garbage normals, some of which should be cancelable, but aren't.

CvS2 Blanka is also some of the most retarded nonsense ever.

@PhoenixKusanagi

I'm 32 as well,so I know where you come from.For that same reason,we need that online.In my case,many of my friends moved on from fighters and I'm left playing Arcade mode ad-nauseum.

I have a lot of fighters that need be played extensively(NGBC,KOF'98 and Samurai Showdown Anthology comes to mind).But without competition or online component,they got shelved pretty quickly.

You need opponents with that same passion and drive,so you can enjoy yourself and grow as a fighter.And for that,online is here...to save the day.V_V

(Still miss the arcades)

@bumblebee cody

You can still find players online in all the HD remakes by Capcom. Much of the community has been revived by people like Max and Gootecks.

Just because you personally lost interest does'nt mean everyone else has. Speak for yourself.+

CvS2 is a special case because of the licensing issue with SNK. Otherwise they would have done it long time ago. Capcom is'nt stupid they know how hot CvS2 was.

I'm with you, brotha! I could care less for online play, as I feel fighting games aren't meant to be played online. However, I would like some HD filters, because a PS2 port would look like oatmeal on an HDTV.

@11 - So true.

Although CvS2 was actually the only game I put a ton of hours into and actually competed in at my local video game store where a ton of people would play it.

Only played Marvel vs Capcom 2, and SFIII casually. I've only been into fighters during the time I had a Dreamcast. SFIV, and MvC3 left a sour taste in my mouth for fighting games for good though.

Personally, it's less that I want an HD Remake and more that I want to be able to play this on my 360, as I don't have a PS3. I'd take a PS2 port wholeheartedly if I could play it on that console :)

And online IS important for a lot of games, but I played CvS2 on my Gamecube for about seven years before I got it for my PS2, and I still enjoyed it without online multiplayer. Granted, I was an AI warrior until SF2 HD Remake came out, so I'm used to playing this game with only myself and one or two friends I can occasionally weasel into playing for twenty minutes.

Personally I just really enjoy the game's style and characters and want to have it on my most recent machine.

Why do people always use the "go back to SSIV" thing? The last time I played any iteration of SFIV was 2010. After playing much of this gens fighters, I wound up going back to old fighters (like CvS2 (I have both ports but stick to the DC), SF3 (same), MvC2 (same), KOF99-03 (I have the DC port and PS2 port of 2002) and KOFXI; all games that I play regularly). Most of the fighters today don't have long lives. KOFXIII is one of the only exceptions, but people complain about how drastically difficult it is to play. I say go play KOF 99 or KOFXI before complaining about how difficult the present game is.

I wonder why an edited version of the Dreamcast port of CvS2 can't be ported; that one did have online play LOL
