Kotaku had the chance to ask a few questions about the recently announced fan-made crossover title Street Fighter X Mega Man to both Capcom's Christian Svensson and the game's creator, Seo Zong Hui. Svensson gives a bit of information on the release of SFxMM and the potential future of the Mega Man franchise while Hui speaks on how he got started with the game and details the design process a bit. Is this game something that you expect to satisfy fan craving for new Mega Man games?
As a Mega Man fan, I'd hope that it's something that scratches one type of itch. A new game, with new mechanics, bosses and weapons is a great thing. Free is even better. That said, it is not meant to be the cure for all that ails Mega Man fans. For that to happen, I know we need something more.
What if it doesn't whet fans' appetite? What are Capcom's plans for a standalone Mega Man game?
Alas, on that front, I'll need to keep you in suspense. We're still having many conversations about the future of the franchise and I hope to have more news to share at some point during the 25th Anniversary celebrations in 2013.
After the jump you can check out a bit about the design process of Street Fighter X Mega Man from creator Seo Zong Hui.
Which Mega Man character was the hardest to model into fighting game mechanics?
Chun-Li was difficult because she was kind of similar to Ryu, in that I made her based on how she is played in Street Fighter IV as well as some aspects from Street Fighter II. I wanted her to be one of the easier bosses as well, so beginner players would be able to pick up and enjoy the game in some way too.
How did you try to recreate the feel of Street Fighters characters in 8-bit form?
First of all, I had to consider all existing moves that the characters have in all games that they have ever appeared in. I then looked through many videos and animations and resized them for reference and sketched them on Paint XP (or something as simple) and tested the animations. If there were no sufficient gimmicks to make them a Mega Man-ish boss, I would research animes and more videos and see if they ever had a suitable move for the game. Finally, they are tested in the game after it is programmed.
Get real, if all fans wanted was some fan-produced content, people wouldn't have been so pissed.
Don't get me wrong I appreciate what they did, picking up a fan's work and releasing it officially, but that doesn't scratch any type of itch. If anything, it only makes thing worse because the only Mega Man related thing people get is not really from Capcom.
#2 is exactly what's wrong with the Mega Man fanbase. Bunch of ungrateful ingrates.
#2 STFUPanda is more like it...
It's a free game that hopefully we all download and enjoy so Capcom will revive the Mega Man franchise. Sure it was fan made but Capcom is backing it and helped with the process. Why people are bitching about this is beyond me.
Ah front page EH... where would the FGC be without ya.
@ 6
The biggest problem from fans/fanatics/fanboys is that MML3 was in production and then it was scrapped unexpectedly and without justification to my knowledge and the "New" Capcom is treating him like the Elephant in the room.
So it goes beyond the Blue Boy being on a 3 year hiatus.
That goes with saying; What have the Mega Man fans been doing aside from moaning about the hiatus? Some of these fans done themselves a faor and made their own game. They are smart enough not to complain so brashy. On top of that, has every mega man fan played through all available games or did they just want to be like the ones who actually had?
This game should definitely get a psn release for sure!!!
I would love a console realese too. Otherwise i'll have to grit my teeth and try to run this on my P.O.S. computer.
What do people want in a new Megaman game anyway? Is it a side scroller? Well, you can get that in this game and the last one didn't sell that well. Or is it just for the sake of having Megaman in a new game?
So many ungrateful fans.
Free megaman game and people cry about not getting blah blah megaman.

Pretty sure this game will run fine on a pos cpu.
I'm just hoping that there is a high amount of fans playing this game which could give Capcom an impression that there is still hope for Megaman, which could also demonstrate the fans' support for an actual Megaman game created by Capcom (AHEM, Megaman Legends 3, the main reason I bought a god damn 3DS) or anything Megaman related.
People just wasn't ready for it to enter the 2.5D trend during that time. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that great, but it wasn't a terrible game. It just felt a little slower to me and the bad guys could've looked cooler. After bringing SF4 in, I think X could come in strong now that Capcom had a good feel for the system for a while. All they have to do is not joke with it.
Also, no more MEGAMAN MEGAMAN interruptions. Take it back to X1 times when you learn the stages yourself. Lol
Wow, whiners and whiners whining about the whiners and then saying they're not whiners because they think they know better than everyone else...what a wonderful gaming community we have. *kappa*
And since we're on the subject of fan made games, anybody remember another hugely popular fanmade Mega Man game made using a Doom mod called Mega Man 8 Bit Deathmatch?
So many more whiners complaining about whining than there are people actually complaining that the only official content that capcom can produce for it's fans is fan-made.
@11
I ran through...
mega man 1-6 on NES
Mega man 7 and Rock/Forte on SNES
Mega Man 8 on PSX
Mega man X 1-3 on SNES
Mega Man X 4-6 on PSX
Those were the only MM games that mattered to me. I gave up on the X series once I saw 7.
These new MM 8bit games (9-10) ain't doin it for me. That game was cool in the 80's. Legends was
Wack to me, That soccer game was trash, irregular hunter on psp was acceptable (beat that too).
I want an X9 that returns to the roots. Side scrolling 2D action with dope sprites. Hell, i wouldn't mind
If they used the same graphic engine as X4-6. And no stupid boss names like Duff McWhalen!
Free fan made game officially backed by Capcom
*reads complaints
The Megaman fanbase gotten worse
The thing that gets me excited about this is that 1. It's on PC and I don't have a 360 or a PS3 and 2. It's free so po' people like me can afford it. This is the only capcom game made after the PS2 era that I can actually play. Thanks for caring about the "have-not's" Capcom, I never thought I'd have a chance to participate in the modern era of gaming.
#28 nails it.
The MM fanbase is officially on par with the Sonic fanbase in terms of sheer ungratefulness.
I don't see anyone complaining about this game. It's just the fact that people want a legit, up to date, Mega Man game, and Capcom expects this MMxSF to fill that void? I don't think so. That's like Capcom coming out with SF5 using the same graphics engine as SF1, and saying "hope that scratches the itch!" I bet all ya'll n-ggas would be like "F--K THAT!"
@32
When has Capcom or anyone for that matter state that this game will fill the void of mega man? This is nothing new, they're gauging the interest for a new up-to-date mega man by backing this game. Just like they did for Street Fighter and are currently doing for Darkstalkers.
And there are actually quite a few people complaining about this. And you are a part of that.
@10
Uh, what? Capcom stated many times why they canceled MML3...it was never a secret. There was not enough fan response or support when MML3 was announced, and Capcom decided to cut their losses sooner rather than later. It takes you all of 3 seconds of Google searching to find that reason. It didn't help that Legends is the least popular of all the MM spinoffs either; I GUARANTEE you that a vast majority of the people complaining about that game's cancellation had never played a MML game before.
Furthermore, aside from MM9 and 10, most of the Mega Man titles they had been putting out were not really hitting sales expectations either. And it's not like they were bad games either. Mega Man ZX was great, and Maverick Hunter X was a fantastic remake. Capcom initially had longterm plans for both of those series, yet nothing came of either due to sales not reaching Capcom's expectations. So the writing was on the wall for MML3 to begin with.
A good portion of the Mega Man complainers are full of sh*t. Didn't support any of the Mega Man series when they were still being pumped out, and only cared once Mega Man was put on hiatus. Like #11, what have these so-called fans been doing?
@25
You should have tried MMX8, it was actually pretty good. They went back to the side-scrolling style after the absolute disaster that X7 was. Being able to play as two characters simultaneously (via switching between them) was a pretty cool mechanic as well. Plus, Vile was back!
@33
What are you talking about? I never said I disliked the game at all, so how do I fit into that category? I've never complained about the game. It's probably great (I've yet to play it, so I can't say). All i'm saying is I undestand why people would be like "give us a real MM game already" Capcom already put out 2 new 8bit MM games that did fairly well - shouldn't that be enough proof that people still love the Blue Bastard? I'm going to play MMxSF, just like I've played just about every other MM game that came out - but I would like to see Capcom actually put some REAL work into a new MM game (whether it be Original MM or X).
@39
"We funded development of the project, provided creative input and direction, handled QA, marketing (including the great trailer created by Capcom-Unity’s own Chris Antista), sorted out legal clearances and naturally, handled distribution via Capcom-Unity.com," Svensson said. "I don’t want to downplay in any way, Zong Hui’s contribution. He was the creative visionary behind the game’s concept and execution. He was amazingly responsive all through the development process to our feedback, often turning builds into us every couple of days for more feedback. The iterative process was among the best I’ve seen."
From Sven's interview with IGN.
Rit4life logic is astounding
Capcom: We don't think people like Darkstalkers so lets re-release a game that's already made in order to see whether or not people like Darkstalkers.
From a person with sanity, it would be stupid to buy the same game twice just because it's the same game.
If Capcom thinks I won't buy DS:Res because I don't care for Darkstalkers anymore, they are nothing more than jaded a$sholes who doesn't care for their fanbase.
Oh wait.
@34
That's because Capcom went ahead and despite Devil May Cry being as popular as it they farmed the title out to Ninja Theory. Changed the gameplay and the main character drastically.
Lol but hey if you want to go ahead and believe what Capcom stated because there is no real rhyme or reason for what they do then that's on you. Capcom would have put out something regardless of how much faith they had in the series to begin with.
