Tekken Tag Tournament 2 wins GameSpot's Best Fighting Game of 2012

GameSpot has recently unveiled their pick for Best Fighting Game of 2012. Going up against Skullgirls, Persona 4 Arena, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown and Dead or Alive 5, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 wins Best Fihting Game of 2012.

GameSpot's own Maxwell McGee joins in the discussion and hits on many reasons why TTT2 won including it's gameplay along with it's superficial modes such as Tekken Tunes and Fight Lab.

Anymore ludicrous than Persona 4 Arena, an ANIME game, winning best Fighting game of the year from the Spike VGA?

A mockery of a video game show that usually only glorifies sports games and FPS. At least they are a website that covers multiple topics than just the two I mentioned.

I won't pretend to be familiar enough with the other contenders to do a legit judgement, but I will say that TTT2 is an amazing fighting game in its own right imo. Great fighting engine and lots of extra content as icing on the cake. A lot of bang for your buck. First Tekken game I've played seriously though so I cant compare it to prev iterations.

I don't agree that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is the Best Fighting Game.

There is many reasons that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 isn't the best...

1. When comes to the Fight Lab when it comes to certain tutorials, there is certain details when comes to launcher, bouncer, & roundhouse type attacks there is certain details that didn't reflect well cause the fact that everyone has different buttons when it comes to launcher, bouncer, & roundhouse which you have to look through almost every movelist (which isn't too bad, unless if people find it too hard to do certain moves because people really don't want to learn.).

2. Here is something that is abit stupid when it comes to certain choices, lets say when complete certain levels of the Fight Lab you get to see the cutscenes when you completed something (except one cutscene) the only cutscene that you don't get to unlock was the Fight Lab Ending, this is one of the dumb ideas you got almost all Fight Lab Cutscenes except the Ending. It is mostly very stupid its like you have all the pieces of cutscenes to watch in a theater mode but Ending isn't there (when I completed the Fight Lab 100%), but the Fight Lab Ending is actually in Violet's Ending (on-disc update) all I can say is that Violet having an ending that was already in Fight Lab is plain lazy Combat had his own ending why not Violet.

3. Heres another lazy problem, Tiger Jackson doesn't have an ending when you play through the Arcade Mode, and he use to had one in Tekken 3 & Tag. It is also dumb when all the characters including Unknown (on-disc update) has arcade endings except Tiger Jackson, heres another thing when your in customization you'd expect to customize all the cast in Tekken Tag 2 however you can't customize Tiger Jackson & Unknown which gives me a reason to ask "why?", the only thing you can customize is aura, rage, panels, & LED screen (intro background) and that is also lazy (unless if there was reason for that). Tiger & Unknown should've been the characters that you can also customize along with the other characters. read my next comment due to too characters.

4. This the biggest reason, and not alot of people took some hard punchs on Tekken Tag 2 because of The Infamous, Lackster, Sub-Par, Downgraded Customization. Lets say I pre order game and you get started at launch entering the codes, & trying out Tekken Tag 2. But when you check out the customization mode, selecting your character, and check out list of custom items thats when you relize that there isn't alot of verity, it starts to feel very short, and you can compare Tekken 6 customization & Tekken Tag 2 customization then up choosing Tekken 6 to have the best customization. The characters don't have alot of unique cloth items that represent the characters themselves (like Tekken 5-6 use to did), there is 3 or 6 unique unlockable pieces but not alot. To make it worst Upper Body & Arms got merged and Lower Body & Feet that is not a good idea for customization period, because you may up getting certain items example gloves which is forced to a certain cloth item or armor (which the person didn't want that when they were trying to make something certain) this something that Tekken Tag 2 should have reuse Tekken 6 customization but added some new stuff while keeping old items from previous games. Heres one more problem about the customization its the way how you customize hair, it took me to 2-3 weeks to even find away how because they felt unaccessible to customize hair styles unless if you took a pic of your custom character unlike Tekken 6 you have to buy the base head, then you could access more hair pieces. That was a unreasonible move to change the way you custom hair styles.

5. Here is another thing that didn't feel unaccessible, when your in training mode you pick your character example Jin then you pick the same character that your playing when your in training you'll relize that there is an alternate color on the second character, example Jin has red gloves & red flames on his pants the Jin clone has white gloves & white flames (resembles Tekken 5 Jin). It is similar with Soulcalibur V cpu costumes exclusives in legend mode like Siegfried & Nightmare has their Soulcalibur IV costumes, along with Cervanta's flaming head which is like Soul Edge boss of the same name as the game (which players have no access). These unselectable colors should've be selectable. Like SFIV, UMVC3, & SFXT when it comes to choosing character color. but its forgiveable because of the color wheel replacing the premade colors in Tekken 5-6, and character slots replacing the costume buttons from previous Tekken games.

@2 & 14: SFXT wasn't nominated due to problems with the game in general from lots of bugs and the rolento freeze. Because of these problems and tons of patches SFXT wasn't fully the best. To be honest with you two I also enjoy SFXT its a good game, maybe not at the steps of being the Best Fighter. Heck Fighting games in general need a new treatment when it comes to testing & beta version like revive arcade tests that were there first before a disc version gets released I got ideas on how fighting games can improve even if the Arcade are dead in the west.

@6, 11, & 15: I can agree with these comments. Locust: VF5FS was nominated the Best Fighter in G4.

I do wish Tekken Tag Tournament 2 should have done more than what it offered me, or aleast TXSF & Tekken 7 can redeem.

Although I don't own most of these games, I'm not surprised. Both VF5 and Skullgirls have been quiet for a while now, DOA5 is seen as just "bewbs", and SFxT probably wasn't nominated due to the hate is has been receiving. All that remains is Persona, a very popular RPG series, and TTT2, a game that, while it is complex, has a LOT of features, characters, items, etc.

I don't have a problem with any of these games personally, these are just my thoughts on what the more casual players likely think of these games since they outnumber the people that like the game for something deeper, if that makes any sense lol.

Doesn't matter anyway this is all formulated opinions like with Persona winning at Spike, Skullgirls nominated for Annies, etc

TTT2 honestly imo felt pretty lackluster when looking at the game itself. The game felt way too familiar to T6 so i can't really consider its own game, just a superior version of T6 with more content stuffed in, but hey people like content so no big surprise its a popular choice. Hope T7 or TxS does not bore me since i like the Tekken series for its characters

Again IMO I saw P4A, DoA 5, or maybe SG (Although SG unfortunately has lacking content for a fighting game so it hurts any potential it had of winning fighter of year) as better choices since those games brought something new to the table while at the same time being competent fighters

No one commented on the actual fighting mechanics of the game, just the aesthetics, but ..... liek... is a fite game. TTT2 has some of the best fighting mechanics in a game this year. I love VF5FR but its like 4 years too late. Its still a phenomenal game. DOA 5 is the best iteration of the DOA franchise since 2 and FINALLY the added a useful sidestep mechanic. TTT2 gave you every fighter from the series and even new people, great stages, amazing online play, when compared to the other fighters released this year.... yet .... it doesn't deserve Fighting game of the year......... for some reason ......

@ 29 Irc_mopac

I am far from a casual player (played Tekken since Tekken 3, DOA since 2, Street Fighter since 2, Soul Caliber all, Killer Instinct all, Mortal Kombat since 2, VF5FS, and more but these are my top ones) and I agree completely with TrueGamingGuru.

I love the extras in any fighting game, it gives it the character to stand out from the rest. But what grinds my gears (lol) about any game genre is when the newer iteration takes stuff away that was present in the previous game: KOTOR to Mass Effect 1 to 2, Morrowind to Oblivion to Skyrim, San Andreas to GTA4..... all of them removed features/extras that were liked by the fans but due to various reasons such as time, appealing to casuals, etc. they were removed.

So your comment about TrueGamingGuru being a casual is quite ironic.

TrueGamingGuru said on December 14, 2012 at 5:28 p.m.

@29 Yes I have criticized the game for the customization, also it wasn't just the customization that fell flat it was also that Tiger Jackson has no ending when every other character has an ending (trust me, Tiger Jackson playing through Arcade Mode has no ending after you defeat Unknown), Tiger Jackson mostly felt that he has purpose which I already explained, Fight Lab when it comes to certain tutorial infos there some info that simple buttons like a foward-square (PS3) for a launcher move doesn't reflect everyone's moves because they have different ways (I can learn a couple of moves, the causals they wouldn't want to waste their own time), heck I also criticize both the Fight Lab ending not feature in the other movies in Tekken theater & Violet's ending (which Violet should've had his own ending like Combot) just imagine how people felt when SFXT was criticized about the on-disc DLC (where there is a truth behind on-disc DLC) when people moan about characters being separate from the launch game, this what the Fight Lab Ending felt like when I completed Fight Lab but when your in Tekken Theater the Ending is not there, and its also in Violet's Ending (not so smart).

I'm not really a casual player, I'm more of a passionate, die hard fan of certain games even Tekken series.

I already know Tekken in general can't appeal everyone, including many other fighter games when casuals in general would rather play shooter than learn stuff in fighing games.

Everything I typed reflects the game in general, and heck not alot of reviewers (IGN, Gamespot, X-Play etc.) took a deeper look at Tekken Tag 2.

It seems like you're a casual fan. A real fighting game fan would complain more about the gameplay and not a character like Tiger. A lot of fighting games don't even have customization, they only have palette swaps. A big part of the lack of customization options has a lot to do with memory/ram, not being lazy.

But complaining about Tiger Jackson? He's basically a palette swap character for Eddy Gordo. He was put in the game because fans requested that he be on there. Is this a reason not to like a game? Not at all.

Sure, this would be something to complain about if all you care about is collecting items, dressing up characters and unlocking features.

@35 The problem is that you barely know who I am, nor don't fully understand of where I'm coming from when I know what Tekken Tag 2 did wrong at certain spots.

probably back in 80s or 90s they didn't had a customization, however there was a type of color edit from Capcom fighters & SNK fighters, how ever Virtua Fighter 4 introduce customization where you give certain clothes, change different colors, and add items to your character.

Thats when Tekken 5 & Soulcalibur 3 were the first games in their own series to include the customization.

I'm not complaining about Tiger Jackson being in Tekken Tag 2, I think you barely understand me why I brought up Tiger.
What I meant about Tiger is he has no purpose to stand out to the other Tekken characters like he should had his own ending & he could've been in the same group when your customizing your character, heck you should've listened @30 he knows what I'm talking about or maybe you need to take a quick look at Tekken Tag 2 and Tiger to see if he has an ending (I doubt that he has one), and check the customization and look at Tiger Jackson heck if you try buy an item it'll say item not available. All Tiger Jackson only purpose to exist in Tekken Tag 2 is just a fan that wants him, and everything eles he just a disco lacking a purpose.

If Tekken didn't include customization in the first place, I wouldn't even criticized customization.

I think you really need to look at Tekken 5, Tekken 5 DR, Tekken 6, Soulcalibur 3-5, Virtua Fighter 4-5FS, and even look at other non fighters that has customization and compare all of them to Tekken Tag 2 then maybe you might understand.

Its not just gameplay of what makes a fighting game stands, its the verity in general from extra gameplay concepts, customize options, and Extra content.

Mostly if thoes fighting games fans only cares about the gameplay and not verity in general (what I said) then these people are just plain elitism, narrowminded, and arrogant.

I'm not fully hating Tekken Tag 2 over its lacking customization, and even Tiger Jackson not fully standing out to other characters like he use to did. its just they mostly made a few bad choices, I've already prove my point. If these people have no clue what I mean by that, or understand my judgement they really shouldn't waste their breath.

I don't know... TTT2 felt lacking in some departments compared to the others, although it is a mile better than SFxT.

Where is the story mode with certain teams? Where are the character tutorials? Where are the multilanguages settings? Where are the character challenges? Where are... the options to make the player better... minus the language settings?

DOA5 and P4A feel more complete that TTT2. VF5 FS feels totally barebone, unfortunately. It should have gotten a proper arcade mode with intros and endings, a story mode and extra stuff like that. TTT2 is only good for hardcore fans when, as an all-star title, it should have been focused on getting as many newcomers as well.

TrueGamingGuru
"I'm not complaining about Tiger Jackson being in Tekken Tag 2, I think you barely understand me why I brought up Tiger."

I know why you brought up Tiger, I said that shouldn't be a reason to think it' not a good game.

TrueGamingGuru
"All Tiger Jackson only purpose to exist in Tekken Tag 2 is just a fan that wants him, and everything eles he just a disco lacking a purpose."

Yes, fans wanted him on the game and that's why he was put on there. They would have just made a special customization for Edddy Gardo, but no, they wanted to make a separate character so you can use him and Eddy (or anyone else) together. It's not like he's someone like Kazuya or Yoshimitsu and missing an ending...

TrueGamingGuru
"Its not just gameplay of what makes a fighting game stands, its the verity in general from extra gameplay concepts, customize options, and Extra content."

Yes, but the game play, arena design and character design is what usually stands out more than anything else. Now I can understand being disappointed about Tiger and Unknown not having customizations but that would be a ridiculous reason to dislike a game.

TrueGamingGuru said on December 14, 2012 at 11:54 p.m.

@40 I'm just going to lead this into conclusion, I've already mention why Tekken Tag 2 isn't the best fighter game. I will also say the good side about Tekken Tag 2, Tekken mostly is soild with gameplay which is like Tekken 6 mix Tekken Tag, despite the lackluster of customization there is some new ideas that is good from the color wheel (replacing premade colors), each character has their own slots in customization mode, and as a update they included a custom sticker feature which was last seen from Tekken Wii Successor, I do like the details of graphics in Tekken Tag 2 which restyles from Tekken 6 for new details, Fight Lab does have a new type of customization which involves customizing Combot, Tekken Tunes is something interesting which you get to custom the games music which is similar to Soulcalibur V custom stage music and you can even have your own musics in Tekken Tag 2 which reminds of a certain game that you can use your own music rather the default music, and Tekken Online has improve from Tekken 6 add new features there can be times where certain matches can be laggy it really depends on who did you fight.

Tekken Tag 2 is a good game, despite the flaws & missing spots.
Its not fully the best fighter, and I wish Tekken can do better than what they offer in Tag 2 because it did fell short.

I ain't giving up on Tekken because of the flaws, and I do would love to see what Tekken will offer from Tekken X Street Fighter (Namco version) and future games.

Heres one more thing I belive Tekken Tag 2 isn't the best (I simiply forgot, maybe got so worked up and forgot one more) Unknown as the final boss is super cheap she has that one move is if you touch that spot you can't move a giant hand will rise and bring you underground and your main health except vitality will be reduced to zero and mostly the player will have no chance to win.

Tekken Tag 2 definitely deserved it.
Everything essential was done right. Tons of characters (many fan-favorites, and even surprises like Sebastian and Slim Bob), huge variety of stages (how many did SFxT have? 9?), the option to put your own music in stages, extremely sweet online mode, balanced and deep gameplay (don't even try to argue with me on this one),

The only complaints i had with the game were the down graded customization mode (but that's just cosmetics.) and the lack of a better single player expirience, but to be honest, the only fighting game that ever delievered a great single-player expirience was Super Smash Brothers Melee. (Brawl's subspace thingy was really badly designed and done)

No paid DLC (except for music & endings from older tekken games, not essential to TT2) is another HUGE plus, especially in an age were seemingly every company has started following the pre-made paid DLC trend.

#43 Agreed, there are only minor things done wrong in TT2.

TTT2 certainly deserves it. It won the nominee of best FIGHTING game, not the best game in general.
You need to look at all the aspects of what makes a fighting game great and compare them to the other ones.
You're complaining about stuff that is not of any importance. IIRC P4 and DOA doesn't even have a customisation option only pallete swaps.

You need to look at the gameplay mechanics, character variety, balance and online play.
And I think TTT2 is simply better in all those aspects.

TrueGamingGuru said on December 15, 2012 at 10:27 a.m.

@49 If I had to choose one fighter game to be the best, I would go for Virtua Fighter V Final Showdown...

Heres my opinion: Virtua Fighter V Final Showdown is mostly like the update version of Virtra Fighter 5 & VF5R (arcade only) the gameplay in general is mostly soild in its own rights there is lots of moves and combos to explore, there is tutorial that will teachs you basics & advances, and a command training where you do a list of almost all the characters movelists. The single player stuff has Arcade Mode, Score Mode, License Challenge, & Special Sparring. License Challenge is where you play through stages playing certain missions requiring you do something certain, and Special Sparring is more similar to VF4 Kumite, and VF4 Evolution to VF5 Quest Mode where you get to fight a rank name fighter and their specific custom character.
The customization is good there is a verity for each character with their own items which is a good thing the only minor thing is that when your customizing certain character of a certain costume type from A-E expect to have limited verity for certain upper body parts, it makes up when you use costume type S because there is abit more verity of choices. (There is a couple of references of certain Sega characters) Heres another minor info when selecting costumes you can only select A or B. You can make a couple of files to have type C, D, E,& S. For online you mostly only get Rank Matches, Player Matches, Room Matches (where you can set rules for certain player matches very common for online fighting games) you can also save replays of your fight if you like to watch your fights (its mostly your fights of a certain matches that you had).

Overall Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is a very good fighting with not so many flaws (the only minor flaw is the verse mode only requires you to play with another player and not a cpu player its mostly Sega in general).

If the game came out in 2011 or 2010 then yeah sure without a doubt.
The game is very deep and balanced and the netcode is seriously the best there is imo. Most of my matches online feel like offline matches.

The only 'flaws' it might have, is that it's not that appealing, and it's also pretty hard to just pick up and play.

@Duggs26 When I was fighting Unknown she wasn't too easy, and I have skill but mostly improving. The problem is that Unknown's Mizuchi Claw move that I already mention of why Unknown is cheap. I've played through Arcade with all characters and I know my games well.

@nightoX its not just the minor missing endings, lack of customization I've also mention that Fight Lab wouldn't fully perpare you to the hugh movelist that I already mention (even reviewers would say the same about Fight Lab), the stuff I said is what I got from playing Tekken Tag Tournament 2 its always about the more you play and I'm know my fighting games very well been playing them since I was young besides I really don't belong to the casuals even gamespot reviewers (and others) have played casuals themselves, and they don't mention certain downsides, I know Tekken very well.

@Ralenzo I've seen the aspects of the game which reviewers and couple of people covered, character variety can also relate to customization because there has to something to make the character stand out to the other fighter games. I only judge not just gameplay & online alone but almost everything that game has to offer, like what did certain people have in their games example TTT2, SCV, & VF5FS has customization, or new gameplay elements like SFXT Gem System. Its always about depending on what did they decide, offer, and got.

@51 Well everyone got their opinions even gamespot, IGN, G4, and others.

There are times where these certain group of people will say SF is the best fighting, or other people would say MK is the best fighting game. I think almost all fighting games are the best in their own rights.

i think u need to lay off the crack with your posts man. Your gripes with tt2 are unnecessary u don't have to right walls of texts for a basic ending thats missing you go on about tigers ending vf has no endings yet u realize how good the game is and fight lab is to teach you important basics to get started tekken has had a great training mode since tekken 3 if people were bothered to train fightlab is for new people to learn the basics and have it not feel like a grind. Very few games have the level of customization of vf or tekken they both have a rich heritage but your reasonings for tekken is lacking consistency or validty.

@56 Sometimes you need an attitude like that for the plethora of ignorant people who bash the game because of their fallacious notions towards it. No different from the people who spam negative comments because they are so blinded by their ignorance.
