Earliest SF related memory: button mashing on the SNES as a little kid (SF2)
Moment/s I realised I loved Street Fighter: Daigo vs Justin (of course) hitting my first raging demon in Alpha 3 and also bunking off from school to play CVS2, literally training mode all day doing everyones supers not eating a single thing!
Best memory: Street Fighter 4 and the 'Vanilla days', the whole revival of the FGC and also the general excitement of a new SF. From then I discovered sites such as Eventhubs and I've never looked back since.
Here's hoping for another great 25 years for Capcom!
(same format as #2)
Ealiest SF related memory: the cartoon (or movie).
Moment/s I realised I loved Street Fighter: watching 2004 Justin Vs. Daigo (not Evo moment #37 video, same moment, though) and first time i got a shoryureppa in MvSF (by mashing).
Best memory: Losing to CPU guile in SFII world warrior then telling myself "i don't want to win anymore, i want to learn."
i got a perfect in the first round and ALMOST a perfect in the second. (which was about six months ago)
A funny SF related memory for me is when I was about six and had just discovered the SF series by playing SF2 on SNES. I was playing a friend of mine who had never played before and naturally we both picked Ryu. The only move i knew to do of course was a fireball so i started chuckin' em non stop, and sure enough my friend asks me how to do the move. So in an act of kindness I told him, and he began instantly doing the exact same thing i was doing, except, for some reason, I had lost my fireball chucking mojo! For the life of I couldn't throw a fireball anymore, my thumb just kept screwing up the input. So he was bombarding me with fireballs and I was desperately attempting to do the same but failing every time. I lost the match.
The moral of the story is DON'T TEACH YOUR FRIENDS HOW TO PLAY STREET FIGHTER OR THEY MIGHT BEAT YOU.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STREET FIGHTERR!!!
May you bring us more great memories in the future!! ^^
Earliest memories in SF: I remember seeing my cousins from New Jersey play Super SFII and it was all laughter. Then, I've watched the live-action SF movie, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, and that funny-ass SF American Cartoon. The very first SF game I've played was Alpha and I loved the Alpha series.
Fondest Memories: I learned how to play SF thanks to EX3. I had to learn how to perform QCF, QCB, DPs, etc. Picking up and playing Street Fighter 4 after school, and playing in my first local tournament (although I got bodied). Those were the days...
The best memory for me is probably finally finding the "Street Fighter III: New Generation" arcade on summer vacation in Italy. I've never seeen it before and this arcade was pretty much hard to find anywhere in Europe. I was addicted to SSF2T then, but SF3 instantly blew me away, the amount of time and money I spent on it that summer was ridiculous. I never got to play it again until almost 10 years later, when some good CPS3 emulators started to surface. I still prefer this version over "The 3rd Strike", probably because of much better backgrounds and soundtrack. And of course nostalgia. Too bad you can't get it on XBox, but I'm still happy that at least good version of "The 3rd strike" is available. BTW: I bought my XBox the second I saw "Street FIghter IV" on the shelves, before that I was only a PC gamer. "Street Fighter" is simply the best game ever for me.
I wish Capcom would have made a better 25th Anniversary collection. I loved the 15th Anniversary.
My earliest memory was when I was about 4 or 5, and I was watching my older cousins play ST on SNES, and I was fascinated by that cool looking karate dude with the headband that was chucking fireballs so I found a red scarf that belonged to my mom and wore it on my head pretending to be Ryu. I guess my fondest memory was being terrified of Blanka as a little kid. He was a green monster that bit you and blood came out, he scared the crap outta me. I never got into the alpha series until they were released on psn, and I never played any SF3 games until a couple years ago as well, I mostly grew up playing MVC and Tekken/SoulCalibur games, I didn't actually learn how to throw a fireball until SF4 came out -___- But ever since then I've fallen in love with the series and I've gone back and played every SF game I skipped out on, I'll never stop playing SF <3
Happy Anniversary Street Fighter! This series changed my life, without it I don't know where I'd be today.
Happy Anniversary Street Fighter.
Played Street Fighter and it was bad back in the day, went to play Bubble Bobble instead LOL.
But when Street Fighter 2 came out that changed everything. This was the game of games at the time and is still good to play today. Even Street Fighter 4 my favorite has the basic same gameplay just enhanced and perfected.
Street Fighter Alpha - I liked those games. But Street Fighter 3 all incarnations I didn't like any of them.
The best memories I have is watching all the great matches on the streams for SF4 and the long set between Daigo's Ryu and Tokido's Akuma. Also every time I watch Daigo's Ryu in SF4, it's something special to saviour.
I only got into SF with 4, but here's to a great series!
Thinking back to when I first played Street Fighter Alpha (my first SF game) it just brings tears to my eyes. Happy Anniversary Street Fighter!
When an old classmate of mine came to me with the idea of buying Sf4 in 2009 I was like ehh why not its only 20 bucks but never thought about taking it too seriously. Then we started playing it online together and he started whooping my ass with Sagat (I played Ryu) I was getting frustrated so I decided to learn the bnbs and fadcs. After that he still whooped my ass but it went back and forth. We created a rivalry, I had the most intense matches with that guy (the ones that makes you feel so epic when you win and such a fag when you lose) and I've been hooked on a feeling ever since.
Street Fighter has taught me alot about patience, about how you need to have fun first and forget about winning in order to improve (sounds cliche but it's the goddamned truth!) and most important of all, RESPECT.
For me, SF is more than a game it's a way of life.
Earliest Memory w/ SF: I remember our was a summer vacation where I was visiting my family in Santo Domingo in the mid-1990s when I came upon a small store in an uncle's neighborhood that has SFII set up on an SNES. I was pretty wide-eyed seeing karate dudes throwing fireballs and military dudes with big hair and funny-sounding, yet enjoyable music. It wasn't til Super Turbo that I truly fell in love with it all (...well, fell in love with the Vega character and his awesomeness).
Fondest Memories: Playing ST with my family in DR and whupping ass as both Vega and Ken; picking up CvS Pro on PS1 and learning Vega properly; reading about SFA3 in an issue of Nintendo Power (RIP) on junior high; playing SF3:NG in a barber shop in Washington Heights; playing SF4 Vega; brimming aware of the greater FGC through playing SSF4.
What else can I say? SF is in my blood and will never die.
One of the funniest memories I have is this one:
When I was a kid I loved playing SF2 on my SNES. One time when my friend came over I showed him the game and he really liked it. I hid the second controller under a pillow and started up 2p mode ( I made him belief it's the arcade mode) and started bashing the the P2 with perfects ( I occasionally moved and did some simple inputs for the 2p side with my elbow or sth) After I showed him how "good" I was at beating the seemingly hopeless CPU, I told him that it's his turn, hehe. He picked up the controller without knowing that I was now secretly playing the second controller under the pillow, haha. I beat him everytime and he was getting furious about the "CPU" that seemed to always play good as soon as he picked up the controller. Eventually he got so mad at the game that he almost stated crying and left my place.... haha
Just a weird story from my childhood, this one always makes me laugh inside, but I feel a little sorry, too =)
Wow, amazing. 25 years old. My earliest memory of SF was when my uncles were playing SF2 on the SNES and one of them was playing Ryu and one of them was playing Ken. In fact, when I was a little kid, I used to play Blanka because of his electricity attack lol but sometime later, I start maining E Honda, only because of his hundred hand slap lol. Ever since then, Honda's my main character. Good times.
Of course SF1 is the first one and although its not quite the most memorable SF game of them all, it did lay the foundations for the series. SF2 series will always remain the most legendary SF series of them all and Alpha series is very good as well but as for the SF3 series, that is a flop and it was responsible for almost killing the SF franchise. SF3 series didn't feel right for me and to me, SF4 is the TRUE sequel to SF2. SF3 series is so odd, while the rest of the games in main SF series is memorable. Anyway, happy 25th Anniversary, Street Fighter.
The first time I saw SF2 was in a video game magazine, way back in the day. At the time I was about nine years old, I mainly played side scrolling beat em ups Final Fight, Double Dragon etc and any of the few 1vs1 fighters I could find at the time. Games like Pit fighter etc, I actually remember thinking 1vs1 games were cool and wishing I could find more. One day I walked into a local chipshop and there it was SF2, I was somewhat surprised to see the same game from my magazine in my local shop. But I didn't play it until the Sweet Shop across the road from school put the arcade machine in their shop.
From that point I played this game and others like it in arcades and at home for the next ten years. I stopped playing for a few years but returned after buying my younger brother a Wii and playing TVC. I'm not one of those individuals who believe Pop Culture can change lives. But it's undeniable an Arcade game I played as a child has stayed with me for a long time and to some degree it even represents a more innocent period from my life
I guess it really is true what they say, "time flys when you're havin' fun" In 1991 when SFII was released I was 12 years old :D lol & I would ride my bike or walk everywhere to play Arcade Games which included Street Fighter II ;] At the mall, movie theaters, grocery stores, gas stations, etc and I've been playing the series ever since then. . .
To celebrate The 25th Anniversary I'm giving Ryu and Ken their orginal color palettes from SFII (http://youtu.be/_xlb65hp4lo) solid black belts + brown gloves and playing a few rounds of SFxTK!
@ Super Honda I don't think Street Fighter 3 almost killed the series ,I think it was the demise of the Arcade. Most of the game genres prominent in Arcades are virtually dead. Side scrolling beat em ups, side scrolling shoot em ups etc.They died out with the Arcades.
It's my birthday too! Awesome :)
I'm 24 and have been playing Street Fighter since before grade school...first fighting for myself, and many others I'm sure. It started my FG craze and it hasn't died since! SF will always be the greatest because of that.
@EastLDN A lot of those memories were mine as well. Playing SF2 on SNES as a little kid was my first experience with the game. Playing CVS2 all day and doing everyones supers as well. And then SF4 came out and I discovered EventHubs as well as Daigo vs Justin Wong and many top players. Watching my first Evo in 2009. I can't wait for another 25 years of Street Fighter! Happy Birthday SF!
Hard to say what my favorite was, but my first I remember pretty clear. My Mom took me to a bar when I was about 4 or 5, I got bored of messing with the pool table so I got a stool and stood at the SF2 arcade machine the rest of the time. They also had a really awful racing game that only let you turn right, if you spun the wheel left it would tighten up until it locked in place.
All of these stories... Really touching.
Man, we were all doing it weren't we. Like miniature World Warriors we were all discovering Street Fighter.
Some at the beginning. Some at the Alpha series. Some with SF4. But we all walked a similar path of fun and enjoyment to discover our mains, and discover our passions.
I think I started picking Ryu because the headband reminded me of Rambo lol. Hey, I was twelve:)
Earliest memory: My uncle took me and my cousins to a local arcade when I was 11. Picked Blanka and my cousin picked Dhalsim because they were the crazy looking ones and Blanka was from Brazil! That was crazy! Mashing all the way and then Blanka's electricity came out! But i lost the match.
Wow- In 1993 my best friend's dad got him a SNES and street fighter 2, i would take a 15 minute hike to his house as early as 7 a.m, getting there his mum would make breakfast for us and we will play this amazing game which the characters called out their special moves, 1st of its kind. 2 hours later the house is filled with fellow 14 yr old guys from the neighborhood. Great times. i was barely seen at home through out that holiday. The next holidays, my mum got me the SNES and Super Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting. The Legacy Begins!! My Fav then was Guile and still is till this day. Great Times in Nigeria. I now live in Canada with my wife and kids. And still play all past and current 2d and 3d fighters...Happy Anniversary Street Fighter!! Sob! Sob!
My favorite SF memory was when the arcade systems were everywhere. Even in your local gas stations. So many quarters ago. Good times. Good times.
I'm really proud of SF4. Capcom moved away from the sprite era and did a great job at it. I was actually happy to sacrifice 60 bucks for that compared to other fighting games that want to stay in the past and just add some hd in it and charge the same price.
@37
The only Capcom fighting game arcade machine I found was a really bad MvC2 cabinet. Lucky you!
Aesthetically, the sprites look better than the 3D models, but I feel more comfortable playing with the 3D models. I'd like to see some official Capcom sprites of new characters and sprites of older characters in different sprite styles (alpha, cps-3, sf2, cvs).
Street Fighter EX will be my favorite SF series of all time with unforgettable tunes like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ-gY9... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axibQV... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NXqEj..., and my favorite SF moment was when Poongko Perfected Daigo at EVO last year.
@33 You know it, bro. I still remember the SNES SF2 commercial from back in the day. I seen it on GameproTV first and then those commercials were everywhere after that. Had never played SF1, only seen it in the movie Juice lol. I wanted to be sooooo good with Zangief back in the day, because he was a pro wrestler. The Alley Oop was soooo awesome. The look on Blanka's face when he gets tossed is priceless. My favorite SF moment has to be when I first learned how to do a Shoryuken, which took me until the Genesis' SF2 Champion Edition to figure out. No 6-button pad either, just start button switching. I can barelyu remember a time in my life where Street Fighter wasn't a HUGE part of it.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Street Fighter!!!!! Here's to 25 more years! Also, Happy Birthday to my man above who shares this day.
What I love about SF2 was how mysterious everything was back then with no internet.
I don't even remember the first time I played the game to be honest, put a lot of hours into the SNES version but I was already in love by then, something about that arcade machine was just magical, within a month it was like the only machine anyone ever wanted to play.
Then there were those rumours...
Some players have discovered ways to kill you in one hit! There are ways of unlocking the boss characters! Ryu has a red fireball and there are hundreds of special moves no one has figured out how to do yet! If you get 100 perfects in a row you unlock a secret character! etc The game was just legendary.
Then capcom made the whispers a reality, long rumoured moves like air hurricane kicks and Dhalsims Yoga teleport were made real, thanks in part to the Rainbow edition arcade hack.
Everything was word of mouth, I remember when my friend told me there was a new version of SF2 in my local arcade and I just straight up wouldn't believe him, when I saw the thing for myself it was probably the greatest moment of my life!! I had a similar jaw on the floor moment when I first discovered that an x - men vs street fighter game REALLY existed, but thats a story for a different time lol!!
Looking back now its weird to see how many of those rumours were actually true, I only discovered my friends weren't full of sh*t 10 years later on youtube!!! Yes Ryu had a red fireball, Yes Guile did have a 'handcufs' glitch, Yes there were 'Touch of death' combos and yes there were some players in Japan who were just in a different strotosphere to the rest of us. Crazy.
Happy anniversary Street Fighter, you are the greatest.
Happy twenty-fifth Anniversary Street Fighter!
SF II on the super nintendo when I was just a little kid was the game that started it all for me! I remember coming home every weekday from school and just playing till night time with my two other bros and the only characters we ever really played was Ryu and Ken.
The most memorable thing to me about the game was when the whole "Sheng Long" thing started going around and how you can supposedly unlock "him" by defeating the four grand masters (BALROG,VEGA,SAGAT and M.BISON) perfect in each round! LOL! I cant remember how many times we tried doing that in vain. Happy Birthday SF! you must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance! Good times, good times indeed!
@40
If that was directed to me, thank you very much! How did I know the game Keith Courage shared my birthday but not Street Fighter?! The shame.
It's so cool reading all these stories about how Street Fighter played a part in all of our lives. Makes me proud to be a part of this community. CYBER HUGS ALL AROUND BROS
Eh since everyone is sharing stories I guess I'll hop on the train. I'm actually a fraud since X-Men vs. Street Fighter was the first SF game I owned, though I did play SF 2 at the Barbershop when I was 4 and felt special being the only kid who could do Hadokens. I used to think "If I do the Hadoken motion really fast I'll get a Tornado Punch." xD! But yeah, when I was 6 I started alternating between Akuma, Charlie, Ryu, Gambit, and Cyclops and for some reason just never felt the same way about Guile when I got into the Street Fighter EX series + Alpha. When I bought that game I used Doctrine Dark, Sakura, Allen Snider(because the things he shouted were so amusing), and Akuma. That series will always be the greatest to me because of the combo system and triple super cancels. I hope Capcom revisits that engine in some form.
Fast forward to an 11 year hiatus of SF and Marvel when I only played shooters and sports games, then my friends showed me Street Fighter 4 and the legend that is Daigo. Of course being an ignorant scrub, I said "HE'S ONLY DOING HADOKENS WHEN THEY'RE FAR AND SHORYUKENS WHEN THEY'RE CLOSE, HOW DOES THAT MAKE HIM THE BEST?!?! I COULD DO THAT!!" Oh boy how times have changed. So after they introduced me to tournament play, which I honestly never knew existed, I decided to youtube some more videos for Marvel 3, then I discovered Team Spooky, Combofiend, and Bionic Marn, which led me to find live streams and further educate myself about the high level scene.
While watching WNF one day, I saw Justin Wong using MODOK, Captain America, and Thor, as the result of some bet, and the commentators(who I now know as James Chen and Potatohead) kept saying "MIKE ROSS HAS THE BEST THOR, JUSTIN TAKING SHOTS AT MIKE!" so I youtubed "Mike Ross Thor" and "The Marvelous Adventures of Gootecks and Mike Ross" appeared. I was instantly hooked after the first episode, so I watched all 12. Out of material and craving more, I noticed they had a series called "Excellent Adventures", so I clicked that and watched about 20 straight, which led me to buy Street Fighter 4 immediately. Not wanting to feel out of the loop, I went back and watched major streams from 2009 and 2010 to educate myself about FGC history.
So a big Thank You to Victor Fontanez, Ryan Guitierrez, Michael "Mike Ross" Ross, Alejandro Valle, Andy Jay Papa, Jaxel (?), the competitors, and many of the other under-appreciated streamers and independent contributors who make such a strong impact on people's lives by providing content for the Fighting Game Community.
@47
It was directed towards you. Have a ball, good man. What/Who is Keith Courage?
My best memories:
1- Trying to sweep Chun-Li so we could see her underwear in SF2. Everyone I played the game with laughed so hard at this.
2- Doing the same thing to Cammy in Super and laughing at her knockdown pose.
3- Playing SFA2 for the first time at an old billiard parlor. Sagat, Rolento and Birdie were a blast to play, and they became a few of my favorites from that point on.
4- Playing SFA2 at the MGM arcade in Vegas. I was messing around with Sodom and got beat by a couple of jackasses. I forget who they played as, but they gloated, telling me to leave because they were "professional." In response, I picked Birdie the next game. Kept anti-airing them with Bull Heads and finished them off with his chain grab super, and after one or two games, I made THEM leave.
5- Playing SF3: New Generation for the first time an the old theater arcade. This game will ALWAYS have the best music and artwork of any SF. 3rd Strike is trash in comparison. This is when Alex and Ibuki became two more favorites, and later on, Dudley.
6- Beating New Generation with Dudley. Gill was a pain in the ass, but I eventually found some holes in his AI and exploited them. Didn't get hit once, and I impressed the hell out of a couple of onlookers.
7- Playing SFA3 for the first time at the mall. When I saw Cody in those jail clothes, it really got me thinking "No! That can't be him!" But then I played him and had a lot of fun throwing rocks at people.
8- Zoning out idiots in SF4 online and getting hate mail.
Earliest memory was playing SF Alpha (forgot which version) and was mashing buttons at this local video store while waiting for my older brother getting a VHS at the time lol
@51
I agree SF3:NG and 2nd Impact had better graphics and presentation than 3rd Strike. The BGM's where better too :)
But 3S excels in gameplay, the other 2 were broken with all the crazy normal into SA links.
Early memory is 1st knowing sf2 in SNES and throwing all the time. until my cousins came and beating my by their special moves. Also while at the time going back to older retro consoles with their pirated cartridges (probably nes) finding a game called mari street fighter 3 turbo example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0pK8_...
Best memory is unlocking Guile, Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma in street fighter zero 3 while playing the World Tour mode. but then never had a memory card so whenever someone turns of the playstation1. had to play world tour over and over to get everyone again whenever someone turn its off. funny but good times.
@51
i agree with the sf3 artwork part, but 3S had some really good music (and some bad, as you said).
