It's good to see that Max is trying to learn KOF. For me, it's weird to know that KOF isn't popular in USA and many people never played the game before. Here in Brazil, back in the days KOF used to be more popular than SF, and everybody played at least once. Other SNKP games like Fatal Fury/Real Bout/ Garou, Kizuna Encounter, The Last Blade, Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting, Rage of the Dragons, Power Instinct Matrimelee used to be very popular here as well.

Anyway, i'm glad that the KOF community is stronger now than it was before in US.

One thing not often taken into account regarding 'character loyalty' is whether or not one's own skills can be optimized with a given character, regardless of where that character ranks in an almighty tier list.

Just because a character is ranked high tier doesn't mean everyone can play them to their best potential - unless they're really braindead easy. When someone says "pick a better character", other characters may not allow the individual player to go as far as they can, so using a different character purely due to tier rankings becomes counter productive.

The first thing people should probably do with a fighting game is try to suss out which character's gameplan, move set, and execution requirements actually allow the player to be comfortable. You'll go farther with a character that doesn't struggle against your own abilities.

And that factors into character loyalty since, in most cases, the visualization and attitude of a character will have synergy with their style and moves. Odds are, if you find a character's playstyle appeals to you, they'll also appeal to you on a thematic and aesthetic level.
