Updated: EVO staff backtracks on Street Fighter X Tekken's removal from 2013 lineup

Posted by Nate 'Nyoro' Young • August 20, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. PDT
Updated: The official Evolution Twitter account was updated with a new message saying that the games for Evolution 2013 are still being decided on. It reads: "Contrary to what you might have heard, the roster for Evo 2013 is still very much undecided. Play the games you love!"

The thread where MrWizard stated that Street Fighter X Tekken wouldn't be in the lineup was also recently removed from the Shoryuken forums.

Earlier, in a rare moment of prohibition, long before any EVO 2013 games have officially been announced, MrWizard (one of the lead organizers for the Evolution tournament series) stepped onto the SRK forums to ensure there wouldn't be any confusion regarding the inclusion or exclusion of Street Fighter X Tekken.

The thread in question was a speculation topic about EVO 2013's game lineup and arguments were going on before Wizard stepped in.

Absolutely ridiculous, especially with the recent re-balancing of the Assist-Gems and Capcom's announcement that they're working on a major overhaul to fix the timer and other balance issues.

This is the only news about SF X T that I ever found relevant to my interests at any given time.

In my honest opinion, it's the best development I've ever heard involving the title so far....I just don't know why one of my bozo friends decided it was worth linking me to this when I was filtering news regarding the title out the entire time.

I kinda figured this would happen. Mr. Wizard couldn't stand this game from jump street. Remember that interview he had with Mike Ross? He looked completely uninterested when Mike started asking questions about the game.

But, this won't stop me from enjoying the game!

I agree with Cardinair. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. Capcom has said they are gonna work on SFxT, and for such an announcement to be made so early? They must know something that we don't.

@SJFox
...I dunno about that.
Then again, it's not exactly fair to expect that type of simple thought process would be effective in deciding what game is more worthy.

To be perfectly frank about it (Zero Bias) Skullgirls is more viable than BlazBlue (absurd character-independent technicality), Virtua Fighter (Competitive Lockout) and SF3:Third Strike (Competitive Lockout).

And for anybody that feels the urge to act defensive about 3rd strike after that statement: http://i.imgur.com/1vplg.png Please just knock it off. Daigo made it popular, but that's all it ever was.

I don't play SFxT, but unless this he was just joking, it's a pretty bad decision to answer this early. He knows that many people only play "EVO games" as bad as that is and that's discouraging an entire community.

Honestly, Ono's been tooting his horn about this game to draw attention to it more than he ever did for anything else to try bringing attention to it.

I guess it would be kinda hard to succeed knowing all those dissed Darkstalkers fans go to extreme lengths to outright ignore SF x T's existence and never discuss it in public to raise awareness by word of mouth or link anybody to any news about it.

Mr Wizard is an immature and arrogant lump of garbage. Can't ban me here can you WIZARD?! NO.

Seriously, the guy bans people who disagree with him on ANYTHING and because he's calling the shots, games that deserve a spot at evo (such as P4) won't get one just because he sucks ass at it.

As for SFxT, he's jumping the gun WAY too early. There is still so much to discover on that game, just watch ANY RNK cross assault combo video and you'll see what I'm talking about. Dieminions recent comments sum it up nicely "It's not my most played game, but it's getting there", "It's probably my favourite game right now" and don't forget "People only hate it because they see other people hating".

I bet 90% of people who hate it have not played it for more than an hour or even played it at all.

49: Herp a derp, combo videos make great games, so lets all play Marvel Super Heroes again! If you actually read half a post of someone criticizing SF X T, you'd see that they'd have to have played the game themselves to experience the mediocrity.

On top of the fact that there are a ton of new dlc characters i think nearly expanding the cast by 50% that probably won't be able to be used, the fact that the games take a TON of time up and make the tournament run too long, the fact that most people don't like watching or playing it makes this game REALLY unappealing as a tournament game.

@49:

I played that game for a month after it's release. I even got it before street date. I was hype for it needless to say. I gave the game a chance numerous times - I tried to force myself to like it. I just plain'ol don't like this game - it's along the lines of CFJ in my book. And I'm sure many other who dislike the game have played it as well. For some people, an hour is all it takes to know whether or not the game is bad. Everyone's different - RESPECT THAT! People know what they like, and it doesn't take long to realize when a game is lacking certain elements that keep you interested. I'm sure there have been many occasions when you played a game for like 30mins and said "this ish is wack!"

However, just because it's a bad game to me (and others like me), does not mean it's a bad game in general. That said, I do NOT agree with dropping it from EVO's line up. That's just plain wrong. There are people who enjoy the game, despite the bad rep it has. I honestly think this is a joke, but man...I don't know - After all, Joey hates the hell outta that game.

#63
bojack13 said on August 18, 2012 at 10:19 a.m.

On another note, I'm waiting for him to confirm P4A not being in the lineup because of those "2f overheads" lol.

#65
DemitriMasters said on August 18, 2012 at 10:26 a.m.

@38 AE is going to be there wherever you like it or not. Here would be a possible lineup.

100% Likey
Super Street Fighter 4 AE 2012 - Evo's main game no need to explain
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 - 2nd most entrants at EVO. Also the defintion of Hype in the FGC
King of Fighters XIII - Surprised by everyone at EVO. Top 8 was amazing.
Tekken Tag Tourament 2 - Tekken is Namco's flagship fighter. Of course its going to be at EVO next year.

Very likely depending on the scene:
Persona 4 Arena - This game is getting a lot of good reception from everyone. If the scence is alive by EVO it WILL be there.
Injustice - If it has a scence then it will replace MK
Mortal Kombat - If Injustice doesn't have a scence then MK might be at evo again.

Unlikey:
Soul Calibur V - Had the least entrants. Replaced by Tekken Tag 2
Dead or Alive 5 - This game will still have a good competitive audience, but I'm not sure if that audience will be for EVO.
Blazblue: CP: Persona going to have more entrants.
Guilty Gear: same as BB.
Skull Girls: Side tourney Material.

#66
DarknessFallz said on August 18, 2012 at 10:27 a.m.

I hope the patch Capcom is promising will change the game for the better cause this is the most dull game to watch (except for that cross assault video a few days back). Who wants to see copious amounts of long jab strings, timeouts, 15 second long super moves, and ABC dialed combos? If the patch doesn't help then Mr. WizRd's decision may sweep across lots of tournaments. If anything, all of Capcom's misguided development energies into gems and costumes should have been diverted to actually making a good fighter, making money from future DLC should have happened after the game was a decent fighter and not the base of the game...

#67
king_e_dawg said on August 18, 2012 at 10:28 a.m.

HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE!

C'mon though. Regardless of how anyone feels about the game, this isn't a big shocker. The potential games for next year's lineup are crowded as is. TTT2 on the horizon, P4A... My guess is you'll have the big three from this year (SSFIV, UMvC3, KoFXIII), SoulCalibur will be out, and Mortal Kombat is a maybe at this point. So that's two or three slots to fill right away, one of which will almost certainly be TTT2.

My hope of hopes is that one of those spots will give us the return of Virtua Fighter to Evo with Final Showdown.

@65:

I don't see any one on here crying. I could care less whether it's at Evo or not, As I'd never compete in that game. I just don't think it's fair to the people who do play it on a competitive level. Besides, Capcom is working hard to fix the game, and I'll be there to try the finished product.

#71
Ittouryoudan said on August 18, 2012 at 10:31 a.m.

I played SF X T for over two months, giving it multiple chances. It just didn't appeal to me, The constant time outs, Ryu/Kazuya's, Ryu/Ken's and jab fests weren't entertaining. Unfortunately I have a CE copy cause I had that much faith in the game and now I can't sell it.

I'll see what direction this game takes in the future, perhaps with balance patches the game will be put back into the line up, after all we have almost an entire year until EVO 2013. The game will probably receive a few updates by then.

On a side note, reading that chat log from Mr.Wizard makes him sound like a child that doesn't like his opinion being disagreed with. More like "Stop liking what I don't like!" Seriously.

#75
SJFox said on August 18, 2012 at 10:35 a.m.

@27 okay, I don't enjoy the game either. But let me ask you this, is it necessarily fair to rip the community out from under it when it hasn't even hit it's stride? I mean the game did at least hold more entrees then the side tourneys and the community haven't even tapped a little of the potential (Proof? They JUST noticed the cross assault potential, something me and a buddy were doing before the end of SFxT's first month).

There are patches and fixes in place to fix a lot of the criticisms, even the time over issue. But this game doesn't even get a chance to hit it's stride? To me it sounds more like a personal vendetta against Capcom when really it just hurts the community (I mean honestly, no mention of even a side tourney? Really?). It sounds to me that the US FGC doesn't know how to handle tough decisions and are too damn unprofessional.

I don't like the game and even I know this is a stupid move. They haven't even begun discussing what games will be included and their first decision is "NO SFXT F--K CAPCOM!" (while pushing MvC3, tell me that's not the most ironic thing ever). It sounds incredibly juvenile.

I had a feeling sfxt wont be back next year due to the way it was received at evo(stream monsters were pretty much tearing this game apart in the stream chat).sfxt is just that, a bad game.oh well*shrugs*.on the other hand im REALLY hoping persona 4 gets alot of support from the community to guarentee a slot at evo,all while making mr.wizard eat his own words(seriously his complaints toward the game were just silly, and banning people who disagreed just shows how much of an immature prick he is.)

@49 played the game for at least three months, just didnt like it,i symphatize with you though as when i found out blazblue was removed from evo2012 i was pretty upset:/, evo2014 maybe?

JesseRobles said on August 18, 2012 at 10:41 a.m.

Not in particular order, but I'd like these as main games at EVO2013:

UMvC3
P4A
TTT2
DoA5
Injustice
KoF XIII
And maybe... Blazblue CP

A fresher EVO!

#79
SJFox said on August 18, 2012 at 10:45 a.m.

@78 the stream monsters, and well the general FGC in US pretty much crap on anything that isn't a 2D fighter so I don't think that should be the deciding factor. Otherwise why not cut TAG2, DOA, VF, and SC5 completely from the roster because I'll guarantee you the same crap will happen to them as it always does.

EVO stream elitists are pretty much only there for Marvel and SF4 (Mostly Marvel). They even voice this in strobes.

ltzBoshyTime said on August 18, 2012 at 10:48 a.m.

There's no set release date for Injustice, so I doubt it'll make the EVO lineup unless it comes out in late winter or early spring.

#82
JesseRobles said on August 18, 2012 at 10:54 a.m.

@81 The game is good, but it's been around for 4 years(5 on 2013) and it's so boring to have it as default game all the time. There's really nothing new or that we haven't seen before, and there are many new and great fighting games now. It's obvious that it'll be at EVO next year, but it's just been a staple for too long and is kinda "meh, been there, done that" to watch it.

#83
Kwisatz_Haderach said on August 18, 2012 at 10:55 a.m.

If this is real, then it's a really unprofessional move, especially if they decide to include any of the worthless games by Netherrealm. SFxT is a thousand times better than junk like Mortal Kombat.

#84
SAOTOME2U said on August 18, 2012 at 10:55 a.m.

Given what Capcom has gone on record to say about SFxT and their plans, this comes as a surprise to me. Yeah, I know the game has had a LOT of backlash and criticism (myself included), but completely removing it from EVO2013 is a bit drastic.

Maybe this decision was made because they don't feel Capcom will be able to fix it up by then, given we have seen NO significant changes to the game except the new characters. Ayano has said that "drastic changes" may be needed, and so far, we've gotten nothing. With this announcement, there really could be no incentive for Capcom to move forward with their changes, given they had high hopes for the game and its competition. The game still has a following, and there are quite a few top players who really do enjoy the game, so this news really is a bit perplexing...

#85
the_truth said on August 18, 2012 at 10:57 a.m.

Darkstalkers 4 won't be out, Capcom will not release anything until the SFxT hullabaloo has well and truly died down, it just doesn't make sense business wise with all the mistrust & hate they've created with SFxT.

Absolutely no new fighting games will be released by Capcom for AT LEAST a couple of years guaranteed ...thanks SFxT !!!

You know what will be funny, for all the dick riding that TTT2 is getting, it ends up having a lackluster showing ala Tekken 6 back at EVO 2011 and gets the shaft.

Anyway, it is given that AE and UMvC will be on the lineup. P4A will probably be added just to avoid the waves of complaints. Personally, I think 2013 is the true test year for KoF13 (remember that the so called high numbers were due to the shirt incident for EVO 2012?) and if the entry numbers aren't too great then you'll have quite an interesting scenario. Blazblue CP won't be there tourney wise (probably as a demo/casual play like they did with Playstation All-Stars), Injustice won't probably be out long enough to be included, leaving a toss up with DoA5/VF5:FS/*insert online game* (Jojo HD, Guilty Gear revision number 1000, MSH, MvC1).

Predictions:
AE2012
UMvC3
KOF13
P4A
TTT2
Toss up - DoA5/VF5:FS/*insert online game* (Jojo HD, Guilty Gear revision number 1000, MSH, MvC1)

@80 i never said it was the deciding factor, i meant the overall reception it received by both the community and spectators,i just used stream monsters as an example.

@jesserobles really solid lineup there, ill be fine with it but i dont think blazblue cp will be out in consoles at that time(in the u.s at least), but if it is then it thats great too.also as appealing as dead or alive looks(both aesthetics and gameplay)i honestly dont see the community taking it seriously due to the whole "lol boobs/itz a game for pervs hurr durp" stigma it has:/.of course i could be proven wrong however.

I feel it's too early to say wether this game is truly dead or not. SFxT, for a lot of people, was supposed to be the Street Fighter 5. People had predictions that this was going to replace, SF4 sadly it did not. I don't feel that the game was perfect at launch, it was definitely rushed. The marketing for fixing the premature game was not perfect either. The steps they made to trying to make the game better are all a step in the right direction but the things they asked of players for their hard work in trying to fix it is very backwards to be honest.

I love Street Fighter X Tekken and a lot of people still do, especially on the East Coast. Top players are not giving up on the game, which for them is a smart thing, but it is also a good look for that game.

I think if the game gets readjusted, meaning the team on the game keep doing what they are doing, it can be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Sadly, we are in a community where if they don't get it right the first time, people will just stop playing, regardless of how my updates it gets. Which is funny because Marvel and SF4 were not perfect games at launch but the community strapped around it, and now they are enjoyable experiences.

. I think the marketing is what is killing SFxT, not the game itself.

I'm suprised no one brought up comparisons to CvS or TvC in this thread.

@89 Yeah, I didn't consider the release dates, so those games might not have a chance to get included.
I've been a big DoA fan since DoA3, and this new game looks a lot more balanced and very competitive, and VERY toned down on the sexual department(compared to past DoAs for that matter). I really hope the FGC gives it a chance, they might be surprised like they were with P4A.

It's quite a shame because now all the characters are available and I would've like to see them play the full roser at Evo 2k13! On a different note I personally think one of the most hype game at next year's Evolution will be TEKKEN Tag Tournament 2!!

After the way Evo ruined SFxT's chances in 2012 with the gimmick of team play, I can't say I'm surprised. Too many people in the FGC wanted this game destroyed before it was even released. It's a sign of how far the fighting game scene still has to go before it becomes mature.

Even top players criticized Evo for what they did to the game.
