Justin Wong noting significant problems with the arcade machines at SBO

Posted by SFilp • August 3, 2012 at 7:52 p.m. PDT
Justin Wong noting significant problems with the arcade machines at SBO Evil Geniuses Justin Wong who qualified for Super Battle Opera's Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament this year has been posted his thoughts on the event so far. It appears that SBO is running into many technical issues due to the event taking place in an outdoor environment.

According to Justin, the games are experiencing slowdown. Street Fighter cabinets are also having trouble operating without a network available and there is also reporeted glare from the sun. Here are some of the quotes from his Twitter.

I will never come to SBO ever again... There is glare on every cabinet while we were playing and the cabinets are lagging bad.

Makes me sad that SBO has came down to this. I will visit Japan for friends and vacation but never again for tournament.

There was a match with Mike Ross and it was 3rd round and the game completely slowed down.

The arcade cabinet lags because of the network and this is the middle of nowhere. Just saw a game that froze in 3rd round. Redo match.

Goal is to win marvel at SBO and never come back.

We did not receive any help at all for our situation. We had to hold that [crap].

Wasn't it rumored that this could probably be the last year for SBO? I'm not too much into the situation, anyone care to explain a bit?

yaranaika said on August 3, 2012 at 8:03 p.m.

What was behind the decision to move the venue outdoors anyway? It's not quite an orthodox video game tournament anymore once you have to take weather conditions into account. I thought Tougeki was always set to be a traditional event, playing only on arcade cabinets and having the tough single elimination format.

@hardrojo that rumour goes around every year, buh after this year? looks like it could be true.

God, I just wish this tournament would die. It's been garbage for a while now and last year with qualifying players getting screwed was just the end of my interest in SBO.

Props to JWong for always keeping it real and saying what was on his mind. F*ck this tournament. Honestly, this is a big deal for the Japanese FGC and the event isn't half as well done as anything Team Spooky does on a BAD DAY. Don't pay for this tourney, don't even watch any archives. Big Two and Runback run better stuff weekly. Watch that.

I honestly do not understand how anyone could have thought it was a good idea to have a tournament for an activity that was literally built to take place inside, outside? I mean what is the benefit of doing this? Proving to the world us gamers aren't afraid of sunlight as long we can bring our games with us(Lol)? This is obviously a decision that wasn't thought through, and to make matters worse it seems as though the organizers are rather flippant about solving the issues their decisions have caused. This is not a good look for SBO at all.

@ 43

You're an idiot aren't you. Having lag is bad enough, but having a glare makes a game almost impossible. If there is a glare on the screen, you can't see anything.

Don't you have a phone? Haven't you ever tried to look at the screen out in the sun? You can't see sh*t.

Poe22222 said on August 3, 2012 at 11:41 p.m.

This is so brutal. What a terrible idea to have it outside, and I can't believe they wouldn't address these issues... people traveling from halfway around the world to compete in a one game single elim tourney just because of the prestige, essentially, and that's what they get in return? I hate sounding like a hater or a pseudopsychic but SBO has to be done after this...

How's the Evo Japan planning going? Oh and Daigo, you want to promote games and arcades and you're doing a great job... host a really great tournament! Or even a barebones tournament that isn't outside with horrible lag/glare and one game single elim...

#46
JustSTFU said on August 3, 2012 at 11:45 p.m.

Ok so they are trying to pull off what is called "Game Summer Festival 2012" to include not only fighting games, but also music and shooting games, and a misc game/guest panel. So "SBO" is only 1/4 part of this big event now.

Probably can't find a venue big enough for 4 booths running at the same time and places like Makuhari Messe would be way too big and expensive, so that's why the decided to hold it outside?

Here's what they are doing at GSF2012
http://www.tougeki.com/fes_timetable

#47
SnakeX said on August 3, 2012 at 11:50 p.m.

This is really disgraceful stuff.
SBO used to be so prestigious but now it's just marred with controversy and questionable decisions. I just don't understand SBO's tournament organizers' decision process anymore.

#48
LK said on August 3, 2012 at 11:51 p.m.

This is what happens when you have for profit only tournament. The players get screwed.

Single Elimination = shorter tournament time = less money invested in the tournament itself.

Why even bother waste potential profit on securing a good venue, when you can just go outside and get glares, slow downs and cicadas? SBO can rot in hell.

#49
Mabans said on August 4, 2012 at 12:03 a.m.

@50

Child-like rhetoric aside, this is what happens when you have poor planning period. Why the heck would they have it outside? I remember SBO being like so much better than this. Last year it showed people running it where incompetent, this year it doesn't even seem like they were really trying. Bundled in with an outdoor festival? Somebody is committing Seppuku for this.

#50
LK said on August 4, 2012 at 12:37 a.m.

@51

Seppuku? Yeah, right... I think the SBO crews are laughing their way to the bank. Seppuku is now a mockery, only existing in movies and manga. Honor means so little to the almighty dollar sign (in this case, the Yen).

#51

#52
ESTAKA said on August 4, 2012 at 12:49 a.m.

Its a shame SBO has become such a joke given its history, I think people should embrace other events over there like GodsGarden which has been amazing the last couple of years instead of wasting their time on SBO until they figure out how to run a decent event again.

#53
Relikk said on August 4, 2012 at 12:59 a.m.

It's OK Justin, you wouldn't have won anyway.

#54
sadiputs said on August 4, 2012 at 1:06 a.m.

SBO messing up as usual...

I've been saying it since last year that GodsGarden deserve to be the no.1 event in Japan rather SBO. You can tell that the Godsgarden organiser put in way more thoughts in the tournament (judging from the tournament format and videos from CC asia). Whereas SBO is always like North Korea to me, you will never get any information and footage about it, but you just constantly hear stupid stories about this place.

Nevertheless its still a very creative way to destroy a tournament, I would have never thought of that.

#55
mad4ra said on August 4, 2012 at 1:25 a.m.

sooo...

outside tournament with glare on cabinets
laggy setups that cause matches to bug out
bad connection causing more bug outs
$70 venue fee and a 30+ dollar PPV stream (r u kidding?)
stream is s**t quality and doesnt even feature the internationls much
3v3 tournament stlye ? single elim <_< ? ... o.. k ?
internationls have to hold that s**t when asking for help apperently??
just like last year banana ken got screwd (didn't learn from that ?)
winners dont get descent winnings?..
vids take a lifetime and more to distribute..
$$ for the organizers <_<.. not really gonna go into that..

why is this tournament series considered to be the top? don't give me that grass roots bulls**t either... just like last year this event has bombed... ive been in many tournaments and have ran a few myself and never have i seen so much hating on this one .. decided to check it's performance history out .. pretty subpar.. but last year and this year especially were horrid ...

maybe next time ppl will just go on a vacation after evo.. rather than punishing themselves by going to sbo just so they can come back and say what .. im the best marvel player in japan ?? honestly who cares ... japan is not top level marvel dispite what dickriders will tell u ..

such garbage... sbo .. very disappointing :/

#58
LK said on August 4, 2012 at 2:04 a.m.

SBO is not grass root, it's corporate to the core.

@58

I don't know if Japanese people know this, but having 2 people holding a shade to prevent glare is going beyond full retard. Why not get a super-sized tent instead of this anorexic of a mess?

This is just my speculation from the looking at the pics but looks like there are no monitors for the audience to even watch the games. Supposedly it's super hot earlier during the day, so either cuz of that people went home or maybe never even showed up...
Japanese stream monsters were totally making fun of this disaster of an event so they acknowledge how much of a fail this is too.

Well no need to repeat that the organisation sux, sbo has never been an expert about organisation, not to mention streaming $$ and tougeki's DVD $$. I personnaly love SBO because of the players and the match, watching kuroda, RX all the new technology in every game. Sbo isnt like evo, but it's the place where you can watch tricks that you never seen before. Last evo was awesome in term of organisation, but tons of match was crap and u didnt see that mush flashy and hype. that's my 2 cents.
