MCZ|Daigo Umehara had a short interview during Nagoya Street Battle #30, and he briefly talked about Ryu's changes and that he wouldn't be picking up the character again in v2012 of Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition.• He's not going to use Ryu.
• "[Ryu's Shoryuken changes] are meaningless." (everyone laughed)
• He wants to see Tokido fight Fuudo.
A little ways back, Daigo started an Akuma card, and some people think he'll switch over to him in v2012.
Tip from Chunstoppable and several anonymous readers.
But Daigo... What about the fireball buff? SURELY that was made just for you!
Nothing worse than tier whores......twins and fei long, he will stick with yun.
I hope he doesn't use Akuma, and I'm sure Tokido hopes so too.
@4
Careful when calling Daigo a "tier-whore" round these parts. His more dogmatic fans will try to "Kuato" you.
Besides, he plays to WIN. His name, and his image must be protected. He'd lose his mystique as "The Beast" if he kept getting bodied.
I'd bet we'll be seeing a Fei switch real soon....
Daigo can do what he wants, I personally am looking forward to Ryu's stronger zoning ability.
@ #14
Hell no.
He had a slightly improved chance with the 6 frame sweep, but they removed it - that said, I still really doubt it'd have been remotely enough.
That said, Evil Ryu does have tools/options and his damage is freaking awesome when he lands a hit. I just don't think it'd have been enough to reach top tier status...
#13 beat me to it. The man is sponsored so he PLAYS TO WIN THE GAME. He's such a big name that SF is a form of income for him, so he's not gonna use someone low-tier because he needs his fight money.
Well, Ryu got his hurricane out of corner back (even if it's not as good).
My guess is, he's still salty and cr.mk and I agree, it was one of Daigo's most used tools.
The DP change is not meaningless. But I guess he'd favor the ability to FADC rather than scare someone with more damage (mind games).
But from what I've seen, Akuma got some nerfs as well. No matter how you toss it, Daigo isn't getting easy wins. 2012 will be far more balanced. But, I'd put my money on Akuma/Yun/Yang/Ken.
Shut up Daigo. You lost the rest of what little respect I had left for you when you said no to playing Banana Ken/Hsien Chang at SBO.
Grow a backbone why don't you.
(He won't be using Ryu because....he's using Evil Ryu!
No, seriously - he's dropping SSFIV for UMVC3 and MK9.)
Lol at Ryu's scolding look at Daigo in the Pic art and Daigo holding his head down....Also shut up dummies! Dark Phoenix says so
@ajmc133. Actually, during NSB30, he used one of the AE 2012 machine that was not on stream to test Evil Ryu and was beating a lot of players. I was watching the Elive podcast live and Ken Bogard and Yamakazi reported that. Anyway, do not read too much into that. Daigo tries various characters privately that we do not hear about much. I've seen him use Honda, Chun Li in the Team Spooky stream after-EVO (obviously for fun). I've seen him use Makoto casually in Kuwait last year. Some posters on Eventhubs reported him using Sagat a few times this past month in the arcades. Some mentionned him using Ken. SO far, seems like he puts some time on Akuma as reported a few weeks back.
I waas watching NSB stream live and the translater said that he was gonna use Ryu(apparently the it was a translation error) and immediately Markman23 twittered that false information. Or maybe, Beastnote is wrong. Anyway, Daigo generates a lot of posting based on who he will use or not her in the US as well as in Japan.People keep asking him who he would use. I rather have him not answer that yet as this will creat a bandwagon toward his character of choice just like how Kazunoko explained that he chose Yun because he was was following his idol.
I'd love to see him play as Yang and actually make good use of his super rather then FADC constantly like so many Yang players do. Just glad that Ryu isn't such a strong focus as it was on Super and Vanilla. It's enough already that he is the "face" of Capcom and SF. He doesn't need to be an S-Tier and played by the most popular Street Fighter player in the world to be even more popular.
Then again, if he stick with Yun, I'm perfectly fine with it. Better that then another shoto.
@ 25
Wtf? What has he done that's so damned disrespectful?
He wanted to play Yun before he turned out top tier and he was the first person that brought out the fact that he's top tier.
What's so bad about him refusing to face Banana Ken/Hsien?
One way to look at it is that he did not want to dirty his hands in such a stupid ordeal (much like Banana Ken and Hsien felt uneasy about fighting Kuwait to rob THEIR spot).
The only other way I can think of is that Daigo basically wanted to hide his hand (I doubt, everyone knows how he plays, practically impossible to get a bead on him)- which left Banana Ken/Hsien with an option less likely to involve an instant loss (I don't think they were on the same level as Daigo's team).
I dont blame him for not using ryu. The change to his HP shoryuken was really pointless and im sure they are going to get alot of bad feedback for it. I honestly dont see the change making it to the FINAL build.
@StellarSTLR. If his team played Banana Ken, he would be explicitly supporting SBO controversy (You have to dissasociate yourself from controversy). Imagine, if his team eliminated Banana Ken, the blow up will be 1000x worse. Anyway, it is SBO responsibility all across the board and it was smart for his team not to condone it in any way or shape (banana Ken did mention that and credited him for that). I remember when the blowup happened on TWITTER and everyboday was saying why woud they have to paly against such a good team (DAIGO/IYO).SBO did kinda dirty on Kuwait though. SBO is to be blamed, pointing players is "REACHING"
I think they should just keep it at one hit, keep the damage, keep the invincibility, but allow FADCs. That would be a solid buff. Ryu's around mid right now - why not give him it?
@ 23 I have to agree with you, gaming should be fun. But each to their own.
@ #23 & 38
But guys! Playing ultra-competitively (mindgames and all) IS fun.
Granted some take it too far and use characters that they really don't enjoy using - simply because they're top.
He should go back to Ryu. Watching his EVO top 8 performance, with he and Kindevu wake up dragon kicking each other with Yun and all that, it looked like he'd forgotten more actual Street Fighter fundamentals than I'll ever learn.
this is news to people? He always uses the strongest shoto in the game. That just tells u alot about ryu throughout the different iterations of sf4.
@9
Why is Deejay "boring" to watch? The most boring character to watch is definitely Guile, followed by Sagat.
Anyways,
Dagio should pick up Gen. That'll be really interesting in my opinion.
@jonisk. He had since January a Ken card around 20K BP and a Guile card around 10k BP. Also, some top players use "No NAME" cards just like he is doing with AKUMA. Anyway, dude generates a lot of postings.
How many times.
Daigo has explained over and over that he is now paid to professionally play Street Fighter.
Let me say that again. HE GETS PAID TO PLAY STREET FIGHTER.
So, he also is expected to win.
He takes that expectation very seriously.
At his level, who cares if he tier whores.
He's not going to pick Hakan. Being an underground legend for being great with a sh*t character doesn't pay the bills.
Having said all that, I think he's better with a fireball character.
The only downside to him using akuma is everyone will now pick up akuma (who I currently play).
Not many people play as akuma because his life is so low. When you look at the BP rankings on xbox live it's very easy to be top 1000 very quickly which tells me not many people play him compared to the other characters. Most stick with Ryu or Ken. Especially as the recovery on his DP is so long. You can't spam fireballs.
Daigo uses Yun.... WHAAA TIER WHORE
Yun gets nerfed and Daigo(assuming) doesn't switch.... WHAAA I HATE YOU DAIGO
No matter what the guy does people are going to bitch.
Personally I'd like him to go back to Ryu because I think that character suits him as a player but It would be interesting to see him play Akuma or better yet a charge character like guile.
I'd be more than happy to watch him play Akuma. Tokido is always fun to watch so I can't see why Daigo wouldn't be just as, if not more, awesome.
I really like his Ryu, but whatever, he can choose who he wants to play with. Is he a tier whore if he decides to jump to the strongest character in the game again. Yes, and it doesn't matter if he's paid or not. He always said that he plays characters that he actually likes, that was supposed to be the reason he changed to Yun in AE.
ryu was never S-tier. never.
he's great when played with good fundamentals---that's why daigo won with him
ae has been all about guess games/gimmicks with yun/yang/seth/viper. thioe match ups are like rock papr scissors at 100mph. ryu's good but not great in those matches.
i hope things go back to a more fundamental style in 2012 and daigo picks ryu or e.ryu
wont happen though. too many people who think sf is boring unless its perptual rushdown.
Lets be fair, whoever he chooses, he'll still be in the spotlight, respect to the guy.
@#52 Yawn.......
Well I think this phrase tier whore is a bit overused in certain cases... At the end of the day, most who play this games and games similar to it do in fact play with an intention to win... Even if you are not a tourney player and you do it just for kicks. Daigo is indeed a tourney player and a sponsored one at that... They play him to play and most importantly... to win. Even though it was his mindset to begin with.. When a business is investing money into you... You want to make failure as minimal as possible. At the end of the day does it really matter if he picks the best to win. I would think it does not... No one has to really stream this kind of stuff for us and these players are not trying to cater to your tastes. They want to further their progress and for those who are sponsored, keep the money coming their way. If anything, I would actually lose respect for Daigo if he actually cared about what most of us thought about him and the characters he uses to win. The guy has won more tourneys than most of us ever participate in... Heck maybe even more than we have watched. Same goes for all the rest. I just want these good matches to keep on coming and yes there are some broken characters in the game but I have seen time and time again that they too can be put in their place. I just hope whatever this update will bring, the level of complaining will go away or at least come down to a minimum or something. Let our skills speak for us and I wish you all many victories in the future. Good luck.
@33 Take off your blinders because you're dumb :)
I await his choice... he has keen insight into how things will look post 2012 patch.
why do people call it dickriding when people like daigo? how is it different from any other sport? daigo is _the_ most famous street fighter player, much like michael jordan is the most popular basketball player and lim yo hwan is the most popular starcraft player.
i don't really understand why it's so bad to be a fan of daigo instead of lower level players like mike ross or philipino champ. he's given so much attention to the street fighter community for his outstanding plays. people who don't know anything about street fighter know about daigo.
being new to fighting games i was surprised at the amount of hate that daigo receives especially since in almost every other game the top tier players get the most respect. LGD in dota are followed way more often than some garbage tier american team.
LGD in dota are followed way more often than some garbage tier american team and no one complains about it*
It's funny, people always think Daigo is the main "Ryu player" and when he drops ryu people are amazed. Just to clear things up for everyone Daigo barely ever plays Ryu in any game. SF2 he played Ryu and Boxer, SFA he played Akuma, SF3 he played Ken, C.v.S.2 ryu wasn't even on his team most of the time he usually went with Guile as the anchor. The true Ryu is Valle
Thats right, Valle is the tru Ryu.
At least he will like the buffs.
@66
Most of the hate going against Daigo are American losers. Trust me on this one. Most of the explosion of hatred going against Daigo started when Daigo started using Yun.
And American Nationalism has EVERYTHING to do with this.
Back in the days of SSF4, Guile was definitely the most OP character of the cast. And if you go back and read some of the comments made from the very same people who are now hating on Daigo for using Yun, those people ENCOURAGED Daigo to start maining Guile BECAUSE Guile was the most powerful character of SSF4.
The same folks who ENCOURAGE Daigo to start maining Guile back in SSF4 because Guile was one of the best characters are now hating on Daigo because he uses Yun, who is one of the best characters in AE. The fact that Guile's character is an American soldier has everything to do with this Nationalistic bias and such.
@67
Do you remember the Canada Cup that happened a while back? When Daigo used Guile (Who was probably the best character in SSF4) against Mago's Fei Long?
Well the thing to take notice is that when Daigo used Guile to beat Mago's Fei Long, LOTS of American players were shouting: USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA!!!!!
Now to say that American Nationalism has nothing to do with it is just purely ridiculous. Why else would so many Americans be shouting: USA USA USA. When a Japanese players who doesn't speak English wins a Canadian tournament?
Now back in SSF4, the Guile vs Fei matchup was heavily in Guile's favor. People didn't have anything negative to say about Daigo when he won a tournament when the match up was in his favor. Now the the same folks who were shouting: USA USA USA. Are usually the same suspects who are hating on Daigo for using Yun.
I think he'll do well regardless of who he picks. You guys haven't mentioned that he also has a sick Guy. That would be fun to see more of, but Guy is a bit too 50/50 for Daigo's playstyle IMO.
If he mained Guile... Hmmm, I gotta say I think that'd be pretty freaking scary. Have you seen how he can shut down his opponents with Guile? The Air Grabs are beyond ridiculous!
I think he does better with characters rooted in fundamentals rather than Mix ups.
#2
lololololol
U said it.
I don't care if he spams fieballs cuz it's for spacing purpose.
It's just fun to hear someone say the truth.
That's an epic picture for this post.
Ryu looking down on daigo for not picking him.
I hope they take the "Ryu changes are meaningless" to heart. Just give him back his Vanilla game minus some of the damage.
We're headed into the 4th edition of this game. And Ryu has been on a decline in every update. Meanwhile the rest of the cast has been getting stronger. Not to mention that the character is completely exposed. He's meat and potatos. He's not like Gen or Ibuki or even Viper. Anyone who's ever seen SF has a game plan on how to handle Ryu.
I main Chun btw, but feel Ryu has sadly received the complainers end of the stick.
Props to Valle for still rocking him
@ #76
That's precisely why I feel that it's so rewarding when I win with him.
You KNOW that they knew exactly what to expect from the character - but still got outclassed by your greater fundamentals.
@77
True.
But it'd still be nice to have...
Good low forward.
Good Tatsu
Super/Hadouken trap
Full damage solar plexus
Full damage Ultra 1
Full damage and knockdown on 1 hit Shoryuken (guess he's getting that back)
Trade into Ultra 1 (they said it's back.. But lol.)
FADC on HP Shoryuken
Makoto is a character that received so many buffs, she practically became a new character from Super to AE.
Ryu has recieved so many Nerfs he's practically a new character also. At least compared to his former self.
Cheers.
^
Daigo said that he has always liked Yun and wanted to try him out in AE. He was the first top player to reveal his overpoweredness and pretty much THE ORIGINAL Yun. How did he shame himself? What was he gonna say?:
"Oh, looks like Yun is overpowered - I'm gonna drop him!"
@ #79
I reeeeeally don't think he needs all of that. I personally think he's still great - you just can't abuse cr MK anymore, have to play around with your other tools, work the ranges, condition your opponent etc.
Also, I thought Valle was a Dictator player in ST...or at least alt'd him?
@83
Lol, he had a lot back in the vanilla days. And I can see taking/changing a bunch of it. I was fine with the Super nerfs. I was maining him at the time, and agree that toning him down made him a respectable character. Top of Mid tier IMO in Super.
But the masses were not satisfied. The forums still blew up with hate for Ryu. Then came AE... I love AE! But Ryu got his balls chopped off!
Now most of the clowns who begged for Nerfs are saying "Just put him back to Super stats" lmfao!
Ah well, he's roughly a Mid, Mid tier character now, but still very dangerous in the right hands. But I wouldn't expect to see him in EVO top five anytime soon.
I think Daigo might stick with Yun, I mean in the alpha location tests Kazunoko was still doing fairly well with him. No matter who he picks though, I will always remember Daigo for giving me the best SF match I've ever seen; SCR2010 Ryu vs Ryu against Valle.
@4
i hate how ppl online strictly use characters that are the best according to tiers and buffs solely for the purpose to win. no matter who it is, if they have the best advantage, they will use them. even if they put a clown in, with a one punch KO, ppl would be all over him like bees on honey. a true player sticks to a character they actually like and feel good with, regardless of how weak they are. to ultimately test yourself, play with a weaker character and become good with them. to people who are good with Dan the Man, and Hakan, you have my respect.
i guess this is what you ment by tier whores
"It's funny, people always think Daigo is the main "Ryu player"
Thats because these children have only played SF4 and have no knowledge of the games before it. Daigo played ALL characters in Super Turbo at a high level. A game that takes 100x more skill that SF4.
@52 you a dummy he do get payed.....why you so silly?
@89
I liked and agreed with your comment until "ST takes 100x more skill than SF4"
I'm old school too, been playing since the beginning. But c'mon man. Apples and Oranges.
And Pears if you count 3s. All three require mastery of different tools to play at Top Level
And let's do some real talk for a min. ST is a hall of famer no doubt. We owe everything to SF2. But Damn, that game is dated!
Still great, but dated.
@91
ST will never be dated. Its the core of street fighter. ANd real talk, it is a harder game to play overall then sf4. As it stands sf4 is prob the easiest game overall.
@25 I'm totally with you on that I'm no hater but I was never a fan good player but never garnered any excitment because he uses the characters he does hence not fun to watch people like poongko gamerbee wildcat and of course viperrx bullcat and desora have my utmost respect they use characters they like and that are a bit harder than the norm to use oh and I can't forget zangitan they are beasts in my damn book and that SBO rather the USA loses first round or not all the time that was still totally unprofessional and DEAD wrong PERIOD
@ #93
I've had my time with a whole bunch of characters - but I just love the solid fundamental nature of Ryu's gameplay.
Well, I guess Daigo will be sticking with the Yun-ger twin, or hopefully Guile >_______>
