(@6 the story is engaging! Juri defeats Seth and Bison with little to no effort and gets away with it because the fans go 'HURR DURR SEX APPEAL!'. This is completely okay even though Bison is ridiculously powerful and well armed, and Seth is the BOSS of the IV series! Woot!
On a side note: Dee Jay's, Hakan's, and Dan's were particularly awesome from what I remember.
And we NEED Suited-up Seth! Look at him!)
whyy put effort into these? No matter how much time they got, its better spend on adding characters, balancing or even doing costumes. Anything should have more priority in a Fighting game then Videos that you watch 1-5 times at most, especially in a fighter that focusses on competitive play and online anyway.
@Hakansoilbarrel: "Juri defeats Seth and Bison with little to no effort and gets away with it because the fans go 'HURR DURR SEX APPEAL!'. This is completely okay even though Bison is ridiculously powerful and well armed, and Seth is the BOSS of the IV series! Woot!"
That isn't a fair criticism. For one, any/all the characters have defeated Seth by the time you watch the ending! (A reminder: these are possible outcomes based on one's own playthrough, not something written in stone.) For another, Juri was the only character to receive a full animated movie primarily detailing her own exploits that was released alongside the launch of the game, so to suggest there's no motivation or explanation of her capabilities beyond "sex appeal" doesn't seem accurate.
Rule 0) Nobody cares about fighting game stories. This is not to say that fighters should not strive to have good, coherent stories, because that's definitely a good thing, but it's window dressing in the same way multiple costumes are. Except most people will see more of any alt costumes they acquire than the story.
Story is inherently undesirable in balancing the gameplay for any competitive, PvP scenario because it introduces factors that either hamper or embolden the player based on no basis besides a set in stone and arbitrary story, rather than good gameplay.
1) If you DO care about story, then you'd know that canon has it that BISON is the one who really wrecked Seth, then Juri confronts Bison because her plan to have Seth and Bison kill each other failed because Seth is a failure, and then Bison and Juri fight to a inconclusive result since they both continue living, and THEN Juri kills Seth, while Bison moves to escape w/ Rose but is intercepted by Guy and forced to give her up.
Of course, you could just ignore all that and expose your bias against a character cause it fits your personal agenda, but why?
(So having your own movie means you can defeat Seth and Bison, the latter of which Chun-li/Guile have trying to do for years? I guess being a new character means you can do whatever the hell you want, then - power levels be damned.
Sex appeal is the ONLY thing she's got going for her. She's not a good character and 70% of what she can do is unsafe.
@11 there's no timeline for endings, so...no. Interesting ideas, though.)
@12: If there's no time line then the story REALLY doesn't matter because it's just a incoherent mess of "what if?" scenarios.
Chun and Guile have long been established to be below Bison's level.
Juri has storyline been established as being made to be powerful via cybernetics and being a TKD prodigy. Just because you don't like her doesn't mean her place on the power scale is to be "damned," she simply is. Do we want to go back in time and bemoan Akuma nixing Bison in his first in-game appearance? Go forward and complain about Oro? Why's it okay for them to be made canon powerful from the outset and not Juri?
It's all irrelevant because they're not balanced in-game for story, as they shouldn't be. The few times characters have been balanced for their canon power (original Akuma, Gill, early Dan) they've been banned or nigh-useless.
This is all further irrelevant because you just have a anti-Juri bias and want to argue about her as a perceived "bad" character, rather than the place of story in fighting games or how canon power should affect things.
I don't care about Juri, nor if I did would I be able to change your mind or her, nor would you mine.
@12 It's a no brainer that Juri is that generic sex symbol a franchise gets every now and then. But saying that that's all she's got going for her is putting the carriage before the horse. It's also sorta funny that you went from talking about her place in power compared to the games bosses and jumped to her gameplay mechanics.
If you just don't like the character, just say that and your opinion will be respected. But as evidenced by the movie and a couple in game hints, Juri is canonically a powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with. So much so that if Street Fighter 5 isn't a prequel, she will definitely be making a return. She has plenty going for her, and this is coming from someone who rarely uses her ('cept for fun).
#12 Did you just guess? Cause your very wrong.
Her most abused move is the only one that is really unsafe and that is the dive kick. And her overhead is rather slow, not as slow as ibukis thou. But her fireballs have the shortest recovery of all fighters and her low kick pinnwheel is not punishable at all.
And besides her sex appeal, she has got awesome looking moves, shes very flashy, has pretty good normals and the greatest blockstrings ever.
(Akuma is powerful because he's powerful. He has a legacy. Juri has hurr durr hawt- there's a difference.
It's true, I don't like Juri - but that's not my point. I don't like how she can just waltz in and destroy everyone. There's got to be a balance. And if she's so great, I surely haven't seen it, except for Juicebox's counterpick, which doesn't count for much.
#14 has the most valid points. I guess I can just be happy that C. Viper is getting the spotlight rather than Juri insofar.)
(Being evil/sadistic is fine, it's just that when she came on the scene she destroyed EVERYTHING. It's really annoying to see a character do that without any repercussions. It'd be nice if there were some actual depth to her character.
also, I never said Guile wasn't capable of defeating Bison or didn't. Just that a military man who's sole purpose in life is to destroy Bison was outshined by the new kid on the block with Daddy issues. Kind of makes him look like a chump.
Feng Shui Engine powering her? Still kind of a 'meh' explanation. Seth has his tandem engine and bio-engineering by Bison and a knowledge of all moves he's absorbed. Bison has psycho power and bio-engineering.)
yeah but bisons body is weak and Seth is suffering from mass production issues and feels invulnerable. Juri is working from the inside, overthrowing them by suprise, Bison and Seth are weakened from their fight already and Juri has a great motivation (loosing her family to Shadoloo and whatnot).
And the thing is that Juri isnt the good girl, shes a new threat. So its not like Guiles and Chuns fight is over.
And about her Gameplay. Shes not tournament material, but shes a fun mid tier character. And to tell you the truth, i dont like her either, shes a great character and i have fun playing her, but seeing all the other juris, and getting hit by her moves if im up against her annoys me to death, because most people play her scrubby and wrong in my opinion. Its like Hakans slide. I want to kill myself everytime i get hit by it, which makes me hate the character to death.
Out of all the new characters introduced in SF4 she is clearly the most powerful.
Now I didn't see that movie that accompanied this generation of SF but even in the opening she was pitted against Chun-Li and Cammy. I don't believe she can kill those two powerhouses at once.
Is her ending canon? If not or is unknown at this point then what's the beef? It seems your real problem is having a new character that isn't meek and is actually capable as far as the storyline is concerned.
@16: You prefer the world's worst ginger (who has to rely on gadgets to fight for her) over someone with an actual personality and unique movesets? Niiiiiice.
(I prefer C Viper because she didn't turn SF's power levels on their head. If Juri's that powerful, what chance does Oni, Gill, Evil Ryu, Oro, etc. stand? I hate to see who she goes up against next...A character should be a PART of the universe, not the lord and master of it, IMO.
Kenshiro, no endings are canon until the next game is made. That's how things go with fighting games!)
But she killed seth after his fight with bison. And won against bison who overpowered Seth and is exhausted. She overpowered no one. Shes not the most powerfull character as of now. Shes just the lucky winner in this chapter. It would be nice if you wouldnt ignore valid arguments cause its the 3rd time this is being said and you still just repeat the same stuff over and over without actually listening and considering what is beeing sad. So im pretty tired of explaining, and im out.
(Lucky winner, I hope so. She needs to lose big time!)
Useful.
