Yoshinori Ono confirmed to Gamespot this morning that there will be some form of customization system for Street Fighter X Tekken in the form of gems.
*sighs* i just want my survival or team battle offline modes...:( problem is that there's too much effort and time developers put nowadays into online, while completely ignoring offline...i miss days when games had like 5+ offline modes so you could kill time playing offline more...more it isn't like it used to be...i hate online with a passion...
@SnakeX yes but what i mean by that is its in the main part of the game i.e. its in ranked battle, cant be turned off, and no if they didnt ban phoenix they wont be banning these either. The FGC never bans anything outright.............cept for oni :P j/k
"Tournaments will definitely ban these"
Bit of a premature statement if I've ever seen one
@6: The problem is that we don't know very little about how the system works right now.
From the article: "No other detail—such as what the process is for changing, how often you can do it, and more—were outlined,"
Are these gems something you set in a menu? Or are they something you build up/gather while fighting? If it's the former, yea, easily able to be ignored for tournies. If it's the latter, it would be difficult. And this is all without knowing exactly what are the options to be changed and how they'll go about doing it.
So, yea, waiting for NYCC.
maybe something Street Fighter Alpha 3? I forget what it was called though but remember it had a sort of RPG element to it with adding different stats and such so maybe a little something like that?
@7
You are right. I'd like to have more offline modes, too. I also have more real life friends that visit me to play some SF than online "friends".
And I don't like the fact that I will not be able to use all this online stuff in 10 years when all the servers are shut down.
Damn, I really wish that Ono and his team worked on MvC3... So many better ideas, modes and online play for your money
They look like Chaos Emeralds. X3 But, it sounds cool.
Sorry, guess I'm resistant to change. But if this is anything more than a fun offline mode I'm going to be pissed.
Quick story.
I'm hardcore Street Fighter... But back in the day me and my buddy would play the WWF games for fun.
So we'd customize our characters right. Well, some moves would build your special meter after using it three times. We made Broken characters all the time. Anyone who managed the first hit would dominate almost 100% of the time. It sucked the fun right out of the game.
I'll take the standard mode.
It's official.This game is going to have alot of content!
@20: A key difference between the old/current wrestling games and this idea is the idea of freedom vs. the competitive environment. Very few devs nowadays, and probably nobody back then, made wrestling games with the idea of competitive balance in mind. The customization aspect was put in for fun and replayability.
As has been cited already by someone else, there are competitive games that promote customization and they build and balance things within the game with that customization in mind. If this makes it to competitive play, there is no doubt that some builds will be more optimal than others...but, isn't that something we're used to already with character tiers?
If done well, this can allow for a lot of further experimentation and different combo possibilities, and maybe even turn a character from unviable to viable for competitive play. Or push another character over the top. But then, hey, patch the gems.
But, I still agree that it should be an option that can be turned off.
Still, all conjecture until more details are released.
@10
Why? I'm basing my claim off of history and logic.
This isn't the first fighting game to have gameplay-affecting items you can apply to characters; Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6 both have them, and tournaments for those games do not allow their use. Custom grooves were not allowed in CvS2.
And logically, their use would be banned simply because a tournament holder can't wait and have each person go in and change the gem setup of their characters before every single match. It would be way too tedious. Then you also have to take into account that not every tournament-goer would bother to unlock every single gem for every single character in order to test out every single customization. Again, too tedious.
Operative word in your statement is "definitely". Your logic who be justified if the article didn't contain various "unknowns".
So it's all based on assumptions, hence why I say your statement is "premature". In other words you dont know anything for certain at this point in time ha :)
I bet you'll get to pick your gems before the match like picking your super art or ultra.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of gems is Pocket Fighters! Which, btw I still play; it's still fun after all these years. Anyways, I think this will probably have something to do with assists. It's probably going to be similar to mvc in that you can choose what kind of assist your characters have. Either that or you can choose to boost defense, attack, or meter building before the start of matches. At this point we don't know a whole lot so those are my guesses.
The gems will be tiered anyway, but it's a nice addition, they will increase the game options...
Speculation is fun but i'd just wait until they release more information. IM gonnay bet this is a seperate mode otherwise it would be really hard to balance the game. It's probably gonna be kind of like Soul Calibur 4 where armor and weapons give you special abilities in another mode called "Special Mode" im sure they will have something called "Gem Mode" seperate from the main game.
Please Ono move on to Street Fighter V and let Street Fighter IV breath. Its time for a new Street Fighter. These cross series are getting out of hand. I would love a new guilty gear but we will have to wait.
@ Takagiyagami
Well if you haven't heard, arc system works is making a persona 4 fighting game. So from a technical aspect, you kind of are getting a new guilty gear.
I hope by increasing some of your abilities, like say faster fireballs, it will come at a price, like decreasing the strength of your uppercut. This way, the balancing is there. It its like this, there will definitely be more individuality within the game.
Original versions of each character? That sounds super godlike, I just hope it's not broken or anything.
I think that DESK and ERROR will have lots of material to work on this game.
With all these different systems, Capcom will surely have no time to test all possibilities and catch all problems.
I really hope the cost of using a Gem will affect your character negatively as it will positively .
Shotos/Sagats with faster startup fireballs/srks for free?
There has to be some kind of balance here, otherwise it'll come down to you counterpicking not only on characters, but on GEMS too.
I hope they know what they're doing, and not only opening up Pandora's Box, either.
@ChunLi
Actually, the announcer only says INFINITY! when you do a super in MSH. I think he just calls out the name of the gem when you use them. I wish we could get that style back when you finish someone off with a super (or Infinity lol) the frame would freeze and the name of the move would appear on the screen. I used to love finishing people off with Hulk and seeing "Gamma Crush" on the screen haha.
I find this Gem thing pretty interesting, I doubt you can customize things such as damage or hit boxes, and I don't think you will be able to customize every move. He said things about timing, probably means altering a moves speed, frames or priority, this is actually good as it does provide more variety in mirror matches since you don't know exactly how your opponents move works out. In the end it's more interesting since it forces more mid fight adaptation and strategy changes instead of just seeing the same old boring combos that everyone always does.
I think the guy mistranslated "Mon-han" which is Monster Hunter to Magic the gathering...
Anyway to the ppl complaining about tournies "Gem Off" could probably be easily set.
Besides that, there would be more tournies cuz of Gem On and Gem Off tournies.
Also if the community feel some characters are unbalaced, they can pre-gem certain characters and make it "official" in their own tourny to "balance" the game out to however that community sees fit, before waiting for some patch and other people's opinions.
Dumb people complain too much and need to learn to think and learn to STFU.
What I can see happening is that there're three categories of gems and you pick one from each category for your characters. So something like:
Stats (increased walk speed, increased health, more meter gain, etc.)
Special (changes properties of your special moves)
Unique (Gems that will specifically alter things about your character, so ie. Zangief, maybe one gem would add a couple frames of invincibility to Lariat, while another gem would increase the range on his Heavy attacks, something like that)
At this point, there is some inherent very heavy balancing of opportunity cost, because by using one gem in that category you're not using another. Then this could be further balanced by giving drawbacks (ie. If you want invincibility on Lariat, you have to take decreased meter gain)
@Artisaban9
I know about the new persona 4 game and Im not happy. It's nothing more than a waste of time. I dont want a game thats made by arc system thats not guilty gear. I just want another guilty gear game. Also people need to stop overreacting to everything ono adds to Street Fighter X Tekken, because you know what you might complain but when the game drops Spring 2012 you will be right there buying it!!!
I'd prefer darkstalkers first rather than SF5, purely because it is too early from SF4 and with UMVC3 and this game coming out, we're going to have our times filled anyway
@34 you know, i love their little unused players cameo's in the background, i remember seeing hugo in the background of the construction site in sf4 and just being happy as a pig in muck. I would love for any unused characters to be placed in the background, saying that they're probably got future re-issues in mind.
my question is how do u bring your gem set up o a tournament? Are u gonna have the teams set up their gems before every match. Thats gonna ake forever. U got a match, both players set their gems for both characters, then when the loser decides to change his team he sets new gems. the other guy loses and then he sets his gems. some one wins and then a new match starts and they gotta set their gems......... sorry tournament organizers...... guess we gotta start 3 hours early or run 3 hours later.
@anon1010
you did...hope that doesn't disconfirm Sodom...
If we can clearly see the gems on the character at all times.
If the gems are yin/yang based where you gain a strength then lose one.
If the gems can only be be given to up to 2 special properties.
EXAMPLE: You KNOW all the babies want to power-up the SRK and Hadouken. That means their hurricane kick will be slow and weak in damage.
A gem just to power up your strength but your speed is reduced.
A gem that gives you one more air-juggle but you the damage scaling is horrible.
NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!
this could either be one of the best system we have ever seen or broken as hell. I hope they do it right, i miss x-ism's/grooves and a system like this could breath alot more depth into the game.
sorry for the double post...but is it only me that's getting worried about no more 2012 news? Isn't it only one more day of TGS left?
@68
cause we have yet to see how it works/sets up. Premature complaints are always funny. UNtil we see some stupid like no recover on dragon punchs we need to wait and see wat the gems do.
They will most likely not run gems for professional style play. They may even make the online/offline option to whether you want gems on or off. So everyone wins.. It does enhance how the game is played (if you choose to use the gems), but they are also not making it to where you have no choice but to use this on all modes (so far). The has potential... It always had for me even since day one. I have not strayed from this concept and I am glad I didn't. Now to see what kind of lovely ideas Namco wil have for their version
@71: Man, I forgot about Namco. My rpeconceived notions about this whole thing were that Capcom would have the easier time of it since it's easier to port the traits and attacks of the Tekken characters over, but they're going pretty ballsy with these other systems.
Namco's gonna have a helluva time just putting a good portion of the Street Fighters into a Tekken engine and making it gel. Dunno what the heck they could think of for other systems besides Rage.
My Ryu can now throw Pink Hadouken.
Sooooooo Cooooool.
Just wondering maybe Capcom could have like different Gems for like power, speed, look, ...
but maybe online or tournament, you can just enhance the look and move of your char not affecting the power, speed or anything.
I believe that would be good cuz ur char will be different but the same in power.
dont think sodom is in see him and the rest of the mad gear gang being chased by haggar in the background of that new stage
what's this?! NO GEMS! NO CUSTOMIZING! FINAL DESTINATION!
#84 yes i know Thundercats as well and i kinda agree, but its just not the same anymore dunno...it misses something some charm and feeling of the 80's...i can't tell exactly what it is really...my favorite cartoon show was Jayce and Wheeled Warriors i'm hooked for the oppening theme from this cartoon...
@86
Just watched the intro to Jayce... Somehow I don't remember that show. The intro looked nice though.
My personal fav was Tranzor Z! It was a Japanese show called Mazinger Z that was dubbed for America. Of course I didn't know that until I got older.
The comparison of the gem system to Magic The Gathering made me LOL... I played that when I was a kid. Funny reference.
Although my apathetic nature remains constant when it comes to this game I must admit all of the diverse game systems and cool stages, and revamped graphical engine may make me have a change of heart.
I am glad this game has as many system as it does, it breaths depth and that's what current fighters are missing. Capcom VS Snk 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 and even Marvel Heroes have diverse systems to keep the game interesting and very technical.
@97 90's kid? Im an 80's baby thank you very much. Pokemon is just an easy reference to customizing your own personal monster which is what the Gem system is like in some way. Pokemon is a household name now, something is actually wrong with you if you never heard of Pokemon.
I only like the first generation though, it's garbage now.
hm this could possibly help characters 2 get along with bad matchups, but well see how i turns out.
with all the new stuff there adding there forgeting one important thing. We need GUARD METER.
did anyone notice those the gem-like things that showed up when Pandora was used in the trailer. those things that looked like the soul orbs Rose uses in SSF4, i'm guessing those might be the gems Ono was talking about because he spent a large time talking about Pandora before talking about the gems.
i think it could be that when you use Pandora the gems go into effect letting you custom combo but also letting you choose how you want to customize the way you do your combo.
faster movement for slower characters, more damage for weaker attacks, giving juggle properties to moves that normally don't, more range, and making moves have faster start up or shorter ending frames could all be things the gems do to, but at the cost of using Pandora that could either make or break a match
This is stupid. SFxT is now a party game. Eventhubs/SRK/all other fighting game news sites, please move along. We don't cover SSB news do we? We shouldn't cover this crap either. Ono is an idiot, he just proved how little he knows about the games he actually makes; "when two top players go at it, it becomes more about luck" REALLY? Wow Ono, for making these games, I really thought you might know something about the way it's played. Guess not.
@109 Eventhubs doesn't really post article for fighting not develop by capcom in to begin with. As for the gem thing, it could just be a mode and not effecting the core dynamatic of the game (it could be an add system to the Pandora Mode as 108 stated).
Well Ono, you dun goof'd!
