2D-X also interviewed Seth Killian at New York Comic-Con 2011, mostly concerning the gem system in Street Fighter X Tekken. Killian provides more details on the design philosophy of the gem system and also covers Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 stuff briefly.• Gems are specific to each character on your team in SFxT. i.e. If you have Ryu and Kazuya on your squad, each fighter can have their own set of gems, they don't have to share the same 5.
• He adds that gems can be used to help balance the game yourself, adding relatively small bonuses to your attributes.
• Seth mentions that people haven't had a chance to go hands on with the gem system, but he understands there's not that much information out there. He hopes people check it out before they jump the gun.
But nah obviously none of us have tried it out yet, but even the auto-blocking Gem I just realized how Gdlike it could be against Vortex characters, or chars with ambiguous crossups. Good players block 95% of those anyways, the one time they slip up and potentially eat 50% DMG..bamn, 1 bar.
Also you build meter like crazy here. But true, we'll wait I guess.
So, I'm guessing you'll equip certain gems only for specific matchups? Or would they prefer players to discover the "ultimate set" (per character, of course) and use that for all matchups?
With a few 100 to start with and potentially 100's more through DLC it could take quite some time before the ideal gem combinations are found. Not sure how that would work out, but okay.
I wonder if we will see speedy rushdown Zangiefs, with auto-block all over the place, that would be a nightmare.
Either way, it's going to be interesting to see how the community will deal with these gems once the game is released. So far, I don't think they embrace this mechanic, but once they discover some cool stuff, that might change, we'll see.
hey #4,
You can't do vortex setups in this game, because you can roll when you're knocked down or tag out.
And, unblockable setups will still be useful for sucking meter away from your opponent, and preventing them from doing lots of stuff that meter allows for.
In the end, these auto-block and auto-tech gems will probably be pretty worthless in the hands of good players...and only useful to make casual players feel a little better about themselves, as they get beaten.
I see nothing wrong with that.
I remember an interview with Ono a while back where he wanted more customization in fighting games. He wanted everyone to be different so one Ryu pitted against another was no longer simply a mirror match. I guess this is his vision being brought to light.
Zangief with a fire ball gym... lmao this is silly.
i hear when the patch comes out turtle shells and stars will be added.
These press releases kinda make me nervous. They keep talking about mirror matches. This games has a majority new cast and a bunch of team combinations that can come from that; Are they acknowledging that regardless of the variety they only expect people to play maybe 10-12 characters? I hope not. And "balance the game yourself"? I get the impression that this is what that concept leads to;
"That character is good. You just have the wrong gems equipped!"lol
Still copping the game, but these press releases...geez
Nope Chuck Testa. Not getting the game. Zangief with 5 gems-Faster speed, Fireball, Auto Block, Auto Tech, More health. Now Zangief is balanced enough to fight Ryu with no gems...
@10: Yea I know not Vortex, more so just hard to block crossups, or harder setups. It can be really hard to open someone up with something that results in great DMG in general. Not to mention everything in this game looks so confirmable into like 35-40% DMG, that blocking that one low that you didn't expect for 1 bar can be more than worth it.
If I could sacrifice 1 or two bar to auto-block a crazy Akuma/Viper/Seth/Ibuki mixup in SF4 I def. would for example lol.
Its not as simple as, Im doing it on purpose to get rid of 1 meter, it can be really hard in the first place to do something that will catch a good player off-guard. Also you build like 1 bar if you use 3 bars in this game lol. A good defensive player + quick meterbuilding + knowledge of the game = win.
I think the meter building gems would probably be the most useful ones in a game like this where you have cross cancels, switch cancels, cross arts and cross assaults along with the supers and ex moves. The bad part is those are the gems you have to pre-order to get. I just hope this doesn't turn into some pay to win bs.
But true, one silly jab could get your rid of 1/3th of your meter, so it will never be as gdlike as im explaining, but that one move that hit you could change everything.
But true, it probably wont be used that often. Altho when I read ''Frequent fighting game problems like Teching..Blocking..a veteran being better than a beginner now solved!'' just made me cringe. They keep trying to give newbies unfair advantages Vs Skill, just practice T_T lol. Like crouch teching was hard. Stupid..
auto-block gem looks like it will only be good to use if your opponent is really good. For example if your playing someone that can hit confirm a frame trap jab into over 50% damage everytime then you should use it. You can still block majority of the attacks but it will protect you from the one time you slip up.
...You guys are just going to go nuts with the criticism about a game with a system you haven't even played yet aren't you? hell, you hardly have enough information about the darn system. Just wait till it comes out, don't like it then you can bash it. You sound stupid doing it now.
pre-order from best buy and you get the shoryuken gem. So when you pick zangief and people try to jump in you can anti air them.
@19
I see what you did there..(lmao)
@20
Contrary
They are expecting everyone to use at least one character down the line so the only way they can band-aid characters that WILL end up "Weaker" than majority of the cast is to introduce a system so vague and broad that the odds of someone actually pinning a character inferior by sheer frame data alone would be redundant due to the vague system they've given us.
This goes without saying that it could be the dumbest yet clever idea Ono could have spawned inside that head of his but I personally believe it's going to be a waste.
Why?
1.) You release a core system and point out that not ALL mechanics for system will come with standard.
2.) You release over 100 different variations which already pins it down to maybe 10-15 that will be viable(Vastly superior than others)
3.) This new system not only deters "casuals" away but it practically begs to be cheesed out for the most broken build that everyone will eventually copy/pasta online and offline.
Least that's my take on it.
LOL, Blue Turtleshells, lets goooo!!~
I think Ono'z idea's kinda good...
The gems stop people from complaining 'him or her
are over/under powered', so they power up their own characters
to counter it...And if people still complain, hello more DLC Gems...
But then again, the opponent can powerup as well, so uh...
And then if more DLC, might mean more $$$...
I think everyone should just equip HP Gems so
everyone can enjoy a longer fight ^,^
Damn right that there isn't a lot of information out. How long do the gem activation last? Is there a limit to how much the gems stack? Are pre-order gems exclusive or just exclusive packs? (i know what the ad says but it can changed or reconfirmed)
@Lyn;
That is pretty damn clever on their part. So, you can never definitively say;"my characters suck"?
They can always fall back on gem configuration if someone has a "complaint"(don't have a better word atm) about game balance. Interesting. And yeah ihave a feeling that it will end up as gem sets that are op or people finding counterpicks for each "useful" gem and the system stagnates. But who knows.
I think I'm gonna want and seeing how this gem system plays out. Something is just telling me that "45" gem pack is couple of power ups that you'll normal unlock in the game (probably be a pain to get them though) and the "9" exclusive one are probably going to be for comsmetics. If capcom does try to sale gems as DLC (which they will). It would be wise for them to have basic gems (offense, defense, speed, etc) in the form of a free patch. while gems that don't really change the playstyle of a character (cosmetics) will costs money.
I think people need to think outside the box on how this will work. If you have three Damage gems that power up your attacks in three hits dealt. An obvious counter would be to equip three gems that boost defense in the next three hit's recieved. this is the direction I think they are going. They want gems to be a part of a meta-game.
People think this is gonna be like SFIV with gems customization. Gems were being worked on from the ground up, im sure it will be heavily balanced and implemented into the system smoothly over time.
well if you have 3 attack and the other person has 3 defense then its the same as having no gems.
I'm Gemming Invincibility on my Ken's Shoryuken
I'm Gemming Recovery on my Guile's Sonic booms
That's it
button check, 2 character gem check each side. streams are gonna be hella long
@38
That's what I feel will happen. Being a "balanced" system would seem that it will lead to a stalemate. Gems countering gems to the point, like #39 said, that they cause no change and the system as a whole has no affect.
Or maybe you end up with a +1 damage or defense buff after all the gems are chosen. Is that really worth paying for? Or would the time it takes to set up be worth it? I guess that would depend on the person.
Remember, the buffs from gems are not all active from the start of the match and each have different conditions. For the gems to be able to counter each other, they would need to have the same activation as well. We still don't know how long the gems buffs will last as well.
#21 drop the truth bomb on everyone
I'm loving this Gem system! I'm just going to pick anything offensive and rush fools down straight. Exciting times :D
@43 Thats where the condition of the gems comes in place (which I believe might be capcom way of balancing this system). I feel the conditions of the gems play a bigger role then the gems them in that why equip a gem if you can't meet the conditions. I think capcom might make gems that reward skilled players in that the better the gem, the harder the condition to activate the gem.
@43
This is true. I'm thinking more about the passive gems that don't have activation requirements. Those are the ones that they say the tournament/serious players will use more. (which everyone else will copy I'm sure)
I hate mystery. My mind races too much
The gem system is starting to seem more interesting now. Before I was totally against it.. but since there isnt ridiculous buffs like the mvc3 x factor, it shouldnt be too much of a problem. Small buffs are fine.. The offensive buffs probably dont stack after a certain time frame. So meeting the requirements in that time may prove to be difficult. I'm sure risky players like poongko will use them tho. I think I really like this in mirror matches, especially mirror matches! I'm pro gems as of now..
I rly dont care about this "talent tree" system, i just want to know if u have to pay extra cash for the core mechanic of the game
Is this system still being enforced like a law? I wish they would move on.
I can see Top tier gem setups and counter picks on specific characters. Could you imagine gem setups being named like an MvC2 team?
"Oh, X is going with the Santrax deck! But Y is counter-picking X's deck with the Matrix deck!"
I'm all for something new, but if you guys think the hate mail is bad now holy crap just wait for the guys saying " hey scrub you only won bcuz of those gems" .
I can hear it now, "wow dude you must suck if you gotta use that gem"
I'm all for it, here's to hoping there's gems for extending or slowing down the timer in Pandora mode, 8 seconds is way too short.
Please make this gem system Local friendly, as in make sure that 2 local players can access the same gems on the same system under the same User Tag, and not make it so the 2nd player must be signed in under a different name with their own collection.
Also, some quick pre-made custom character selections would be nice, like what they in MvC3. So you can quickly select your team/gems.
Honestly, the idea of people taking their sweet time selecting gems from a list of 200 before a match makes me queazy. I play fighting games because of how quick you can pick it up and play for a short period of time, but I'm afraid that this RPG element and gem selection will make this fighting game a longer process than necessary.
And please, if there's still hope, make gems optional, or at least make some defaults that people can pick quickly and efficiently, so we can get into a match swiftly.
@#29
1 Where the hell did you see "that not ALL mechanics for system will come with standard." ?
if it's about dlc gem , you're gonna look so ridiculous when it turns out to be clones of standards gems with "cool and neat effects such as the dlc exclusive gold aura version of the regular speed gem" .
2 And ? It's called having option , of course builds will arise , be copied to death because it's from "that awesome x tourney god" and be more popular ... does it mean "us morons" can't have the right to go for more obscure and specialized stuff ?
3 Not even a point much different from 2. And still i say "And ?" .
It's hardly that different from having a choice among 35-50 characters and many just picking up the most efficient of them .
Everyone picking up only ryu or tiers gods didnt magically make scrubs sucks less , why should it in the context of gems suddenly ?
It's a concept we've kinda seen proof tested in a few highly competitive and massively popular rpgs like diablo and guild wars . And albeit simplified then , the infity gems didnt kill past marvel games .
@59
It's funny that people keep saying that the DLC gems will be better when Seth and Ono both stated that the DLC gems will not be explicitly stronger than the ones in-game. But people like Lyn don't like things such as "facts" and "information", they prefer to stick to crying and making themselves look like fools.
So sad.
The comment on "balancing the game yourself" with gems from Seth is interesting. Maybe this might not be as bad as people think. I think it will be similar to the T.O.P system in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, but more complex. The gems will definitely add to the strategy and hopefully allow more of us to play characters we love and not have to worry about bad match-ups so much.
@ 20 a majority or sizable percentage of the cast often go unused anyway. Particularly in recent times with the advent of tier otientated players. So I'd imagine that Capcom would be expecting mirror matches to be quite frequent and this may be an attempt to throw some variety into the mix.
Remember when Ono said that SSF4's balance wasn't going to be carried over into this game?Well I think this was the kind of balance that Ono wanted to implement in the game.He wants us to balance the game out for ourselves by using the gems.If that's the case,then I guess this system is going to be great!
this is just another reason to not have this bull. SfxT tournaments will take such a long time. can you imagine how long it will take to pick 10 gems for each team? picking 10 out of hundreds of gems?
(Gems are awesome, don't listen to the haters jealous of your bling Capcom dawg)
Capcoms games should rely on skills only! comeback factors and auto bonusses will let new players jump aboard our wagen without putting hours of work into their gameplay in the training room!
Capcom, you try to get new players into your games.. but letting your hardcore fanbase down with this blasphemy to fighting games is just sad!
Im sorry Seth.. but I have already pulled the trigger on the gun.. while holding it against my head..
Fighting games are ruined!
atleast make a no gem system mode jeez ooh w8 u want to sell them as dlc ooh
Guess this wont be a tournament game. It would make a good party game to throw in with mario party and smash brothers brawl when everyone gets drunk tho.
I wish capcom would have let ppl see more of this system before they jumped the gun and made this completely mandatory.
God they had to ruin the dream crossover with this experimental bs. I was so hype and now I'm just like "meh". (not to mention it's mostly SSF4 cross Tekken)
New Challengers! Oh-boy...
@Zarathos
1.)You seem to not understand. Exclusive gems wouldn't be clones of pre-existing gems.. hence the word "Exclusive".
2.) It seems you have some hatred for high-level players. I never once said "You're stupid if you don't do X" nor have I condomned it but it seems you would rather care-less since you're selective reading.
3.) My point still stands however that people will cater to the best build. No one cares "what I think". they only care about what works and what doesn't. If you want to fall behind the mode then by all means.
Everything else you've said was nothing more than fodder; and using an entirely different gaming genre to back up an empty claim.
good day.
@SnakeX
I've been watching you for a while now and it seems all you've done the past couple posts I've read was you complaining about people complaining.
How should I respond to you... someone who offers virtually nothing to topics... ummm.. hmmm..
#39 interesting, imagine a 3 power gems vs a 3 defense gems players mirror match.
each gem needs a condition to activate (5 normal hits, 2 special hits, getting hit twice by specials and so on).
also the buffs last 20 or 30 secs? i cant remember exactly. So the chances taht both players have all buffs active at the same time arent taht big.
What if my oponent has all his 3 power gems active, i should take a more defensive posture, maybe turtle a little till his buffs are gone then strike him while my defense gems are up and take more risks, who knows.
Gems open a wide new variety of gameplays and they are the CORE of the game they said, the problem is charging for it with the DLC gems.
Charging for gems is like charging for the Ultra2 from super sf4. If its part of the CORE why should i pay more for them?
@79
Because some gems will be better than others.
Then you have the thought of synergy within the gems themselves.
Like, if you have gems that's only centered around getting off combos.
Ex. You have a ATK boost gem and a SPD boost gem and both requirements are that you land a 4-hit combo(example).
As far as DLC gems go.. It's Capcom.. did you really expect any charity for being such a su- err I mean fan?
Just wait and see people, there is nothing more you can do..
Everyone says they will pick the best build but if your any kind of real gamer, you know that sometimes the best has some set backs. I bet the best most powerful gems have some side effects or really high reqiments of actvation. Perhaps a 20% damage increase gem would activate
Now what if your character is incapable of getting 8 hits? Your "Most powerful Gem" becomes obsolete. This is obvivously a small example but I bet that is how Gems will balance so you will not just use the best because of stats alone they also have to work for you and your team.
lol^ this sure reminds me of snk vs capcom card battle. ^^
For something thats a main part of the game, its kind of odd that it hasn't appeared on any of the pre-release builds yet leaving a lot of people who did play it scratching their heads. What were we playing then?
Regardless, I still think the gems are a neat idea and add a lot more to the game. Just wish they showed it off from the start.
@68
Yeah, I'm really curious as to how Capcom will make it so that selecting characters AND their gems doesn't slow tournaments down...because if they don't then tournament organizers will be inclined to simply ban gems just for the sake of not taking forever to get through the setup process.
@78
And all you do is make broad and baseless claims like "only 10 or 15 gems will be viable" and sh*t on every little thing that you don't like. The fact that you have to focus only on me being annoyed at all the people that cry foul without looking at all the facts instead of acknowledging that you're wrong for thinking that the DLC gems will purposefully be better when we've only been told that opposite sure says something about you.
Not my fault you have tunnel vision, pal. You can go back and read as many of my posts as you'd like, they all have a point to them. But hey, I guess it's easier for you to assume that all I was doing was "complaining about complainers", right?
Sad.
@85
As I see it, there's a number of reasons. For starters, it's obvious that the gem system wasn't something they had planned on implementing from the beginning of the game's inception which would explain why it hasn't been available in any build yet. Secondly, like Pandora, they probably wanted to explain it a bit first before unleashing it on the public. Considering how much of a hot topic the gem system is, I'm sure they'll make it available in a future build eventually.
Because YOU asked for it and because YOU tried to single me out; let's play.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZFvbU...
So much for all of you whining about the Auto-Block gem, eh? Like I mentioned before, I can't wait to face scrubs with this on and drain all of their meter. :)"
Yes, because if you actually READ the blog; you will see that block-strings does NOT drain meter. I wonder who's the scrub for not reading the blog...
Here's another "gem"
"Posted by SnakeX on October 18, 2011 at 7:20 p.m. #44
Again, they already said that the DLC gems will not be explicitly stronger, just different. So those of you like #7 that are crying are doing so for no reason."
More of you crying about people crying.
it seems everytime someone tries to theory insight; you're right around the corner ready to spread your butthurt all over the topic using "What they said" as some standing ground.
Since you were too busy being a fraud than actually reading; it's been said that different retails will offer different types of "decks" for gems on SE release.
It doesn't matter if it's "different", it's what the standard release ISN'T getting when it's part of the game. Or maybe you're that customer that takes whatever is given to you..
SMDH..
#87
"Yes, because if you actually READ the blog; you will see that block-strings does NOT drain meter. I wonder who's the scrub for not reading the blog..."
So what? It will still be very easy to drain meter their without using a block string. Characters with overheads will be draining people's meter all day.
@88
Characters with overheads will drain meter if you're doing down-back; which most of you probably will due to fear.
However, how does that account for the 9 other times where overhead gets eaten by meter?
Then to take a step further, Overheads aren't spammable so what point are you trying to make? lol
my 2cents...
the dlc gems should be the same exact ones as the preloaded one, except it should be cosmetically different.. like the increase strenght.. instead of flashing red.. the dlc version gives you a crazy aura dbz style.. or guiles sonic boom gem would look way cooler or different.. etc etc..
its like buying costumes but doesn't change the core 100 gems thats in the game
"I'm sure you lost a lot of customers with this system"
The only customers Capcom would lose are the immature tourney kids. That's it. I'm so sick of people pretending like Capcom is supposed to make games that cater to all the damn tourney kids...which makes up MAYBE 10% of the total market at best.
The primary reason for making games is for fun and entertainment. Who cares if it isn't balanced. That never HONESTLY ruined any sane person's fun.
this seems simple enough. autoblockgem + auto throwtech + minus recoveryfraes on guiles sonic boom -> throw only SBs and win on time out every time.
I like that
