Meh, still crazy scared about where the game is going. This has potential, but with things like auto/<insert fundamental/core> it looks bad.
Also #4 im not sure, but I can imagine some gems will be DLC. Which also scares me seeing as to make them sell they have to be rly good.
@3: From the way the package is worded, it sounds like there will be retailer (Gamestop, Best buy ,etc.) pre-order packages that are different per retailer. The Special Edition will get them all + a Special Edition Only pack of gems, for a total of 45 in the Special Edition.
What isn't known:
-Whether these are unlocks for gems already in the game, or if they're all-new gems that come in addition to what's possibly in the game
-If gems will be unlockable in the game at all
-How one will go about unlocking them, if they are unlockable in the game
We do know that players have the option to not use any Gems, which means that tournies can easily ignore them.
What isn't certified yet is whether there will be any hard method to filter Gem users and non-Gem users online. The most we have on this front is one poster who said he asked Seth Killian, and that Seth said there will be no method to prevent your opponent from using Gems.
SO GEMS CANE BE USED THE SAME AS A COMEBACK FACTOR
Also something to note that I think people are missing in relation to Gems:
They do not do not seem to do anything until activated by conditions met during the fight.
-In this video, S-Kill demonstrates that one of Ryu's ATK power Gems activates by his Ryu getting hit with two special moves (in total, not consecutively).
-The second one will activate when his Ryu hits the opponent with 5 normals (again, in total).
-he doesn't get to show the third one, but says it's in relation to HIS Ryu getting hit with specials again.
Each Gem has a timer, once activated, before it deactivates again. I assume it can then be reactivated once the conditions are met again. Or maybe not, who knows yet.
It is possible to stack certain Gems for additive effects when they're activated. So if you manage to activate, say, two +%10 ATK Gems, you'd get a total of of %20 boost for the time they overlap.
Theory Fighter 2 - NyuBomber Edition: It might be the case that there are some Gems that are truly passive and their effects are always on. This would be a balancing factor; higher power gems would have more stringent activation requirements, while such "true passive" gems would be weaker, and might not even be stackable.
Frankly, I'm more worried about the acquisition method than the Gems causing imbalances, at this juncture.
i think they added this for more casual players,( fun aspect). im sure its not going to be like that in touneys. i assume you guys are more worried about how the online play is going to be with this new feature.
@10
i figured pandora was the "rage" equivilent in sfxtk :/ so this is to come back mechanics i guess.
I understand that they wanted this game to have as much content as possible, but they should have left the kitchen sink out of the game.
if they use this in tournaments (as ive seen that they said tounaments might want to use this) then i think its a bad idea.....
There is probably another way to go about getting these, it wouldn't be right to not allow everybody something that could possibly be game changing just because they didn't buy a limited edition or pre order the game.. If so they can keep it, i'll save my money and continue to rock with AE.
you all are friggin idiots you don't even know the extent of the gems just all jumping to conclusions wait till you use them first hand then judge........
Here's what I know if I don't buy the special edition I wont be getting 9 secret gems which means that I will be at a competitive disadvantage with all my characters which means I'm buying an inferior version of the game WHICH IS BS. So there is no way this **** should not be banned in tournaments.
I think we all need to start looking forward to Tekken X Street Fighter instead. When I played this game at NYC Fightclub it was wack and the game has gotten worse since then. Not to mention according to Seth they haven't start trying to balance the game yet and now they've only got 5 months to do it. Seems like a winning formula to me....
Unless they do something extremely funky with being able to save your gems to some SD card or something, they won't really affect tourney play. I assume what gems are usable will be limited to what gems are accessed on any one PS3/360. So if you're playing on the same machine, you'll have the same access to gems as the other guy you're fighting. As long as all players have access to the same gems, then I really don't mind it at all. If that's the case, I really welcome the system, as it adds a level of customization that's missing from most fighting games. So far, it doesn't appear that you can pick different supers or whatnot, so this allows some level of customization beyond what characters you pick.
how is this the comback mechanic? it looks like it rewards skill (by having to land a number of hits in a combo to activate many of them). to me because from what Ive seen so far through the gems you cant use them till ativated and they are all activated differently and you cant have more than 1 of the same gem type (yes you can have two reds what i mean two red gems that have the same EXACT effect on it) but I do agree that having these in a tournament setting is a bad idea due to the fact of people will just really stick to the one set of the best gems
and there is limits to the Auto block and auto tech throws gem and like some one else said they are activated after so many consecutive non blocked hits and consecutively non teched throws then it will activate but will only be active for a few secconds.....
TL;DR edition: Step your game up quit bitching learn to play adapt to the game or quit learn to work around this or just dont even get it but dont waste everyones time buying it...
Went to the web page & read up on the Gem thing.
Here's the explanation.
"but I do agree that having these in a tournament setting is a bad idea due to the fact of people will just really stick to the one set of the best gems"
Just like it's a bad idea to allow people to pick super arts in 3rd Strike or ultras in SFIV due to the fact that people will just really stick to the one best super/ultra? I really don't see where giving players choices and options for customization is a bad thing.
this was my reaction when I read what the gem system is and that you need to buy it / ce + pre order exclusive gems exist.
Gems are Capcom's way of trying to appeal to the casual crowed. I definitely can't see this being used for tournaments especially with Gems that auto-guard and auto-tech for you. Not to mention that fact that you will most likely have to buy the Gems as DLC and the trouble that would be for tournament organizers.
People will probably mess around with these for a week of two, but then they will most likely be banned from tournaments.
I'm also really excited about what the green gems actually do. Whether they just increase foot/dash speed, or if they actually reduce startup/recovery frames on movies. We could get some super sick combo videos/strategies if stacking green gems allowed you to make new links that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
The Gem system could be really either good or really bad for this game.
If handled correctly this system could add a fascinating new dimension of strategy to the game. Think of this: not only would each player in a tournament have their own style of play and team of characters; they'd also have their own signature personalized Gem set. Each player would be different even if similar characters were used.
If not that, players could select Gems on a matchup basis to soften bad matchups and further balance the game. Sounds great...unless there are overpowered Gems, exclusive Gems, or the whole thing doesn't affect the gameplay enough to worry about.
In order to pan out:
1. All Gems must be unlockable to all players.
2. Gems correct imbalances and add individuality of style, rather than create or promote imbalances.
3. Gems must be interesting and affect the gameplay in a positive and noticeable but not overbearing way.
4. More powerful Gems must be balanced with harder activation requirements / take up more Gem slots / etc.
@20
Use them when? After we've bought the game? That would be a $hitty time to "Judge" them.
Hey guys, I'm Mr. Capcom Fan Boy. And if this New Gem system is killing the hype for me, I can only imagine how much steam it's lost for everyone else!
This game already has like 10 systems to try to crack and integrate to our play style. The Gems just seem like too much.
No one is even talking about the Charge cancels, Tag cancels, Charge cancel and the next hit move counts as a reversal?!? This game is crazy packed already!
The problems.
1) Gems/Exclusive Gems really kill the competing spirit of this game! Now my retarded friends can yell, "You only won because of your Gems", not how well you've Mastered your character!
2) The majority (From what I've read) does NOT want this! Pandora mode was enough!
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Pre-Order, Day 1 buyer! But for me, an Old School Street Fighter, this game just went from Masterpiece to Party Game! A mere diversion when I need a SF break.
At this point I'm buying this game for Hugo lol.
I hope I'm wrong, I hope this game is the $hit!
1st how will this effect tournament time when everyone has to do button checks plus gem setups and 2nd they could go the cvs2 way; where custom ism's were banned and 3rd WTF CAPCOM why try sooo hard im sure TXSF will stick to the tekken tag formula or even better go traditional 1vs1 style. All capcom had to do was stick to the... hell any sf formula sh!t thro in sum parries or FADC all there doing is to show NAMCO what NOT to do. im no hypocrite i will get this game but much later than i initially hope........ well March is a good ways away so there MIGHT be some redemption..... but the cynic in me really doubt it.0~0
All I gotta say is I was doing 50% combos at NYC fightclub without any boost on my characters, now you are telling my I could potential get a 40% damage increase with 3 power gems making that combo I did do 90% in a game where if one character dies I lose the round. Uhhhhhh
@29
thats what im hoping they will do, theres a good chance tounaments will just not except this game unless there are a few restrictions such as baning cole, turo, and kuro cat :/
on a good note im glad that udon made a sfxtk prequil comic :D im one of those fighting gamers that love story line, although fighting games are not famous for story. :/
i got frustated when seth said there wasnt a big story outside pandora. i just hope the street fighters dont look like wimps as they like to portray for promotional use...even in cvs chaos the comic they did that a little, and capcom didnt even make that one >:/
@35: They've said that none of the playable versions thus-far have been fully balanced. I'd personally be very surprised if there are any feasible 60%+ combos in the game (excluding Pandora combos). By feasible, I mean that a combo you'd see in tourney play without outrageous set-ups.
@32 That would be awesome if Gems actually affected the game that way but they probably wont. I might just be a pessimist but I see Gems making the game imbalanced. Us tournament players will simply find the best mix of Gems that make our characters OP like a bunch of strength gems that give us a sudo xfactor after losing half health. People are simply going to find the cheapest mix of gems to make there characters as OP as possible.
This ain't f**king Power Stone WTF is these Gems? I still don't understand this 45 Gems and DLC crap I have to pay for cheap play? no way....
I... highly doubt this will be a mandatory game mode like some people seem to be acting like... things like this are usually reserved for offline fun or online randomness when you feel like it.
Also, people complain about the lack of stuff in MvC3 and then complain that there's too many things in this? Come on guys.
BTW, SAKURA + KARIN MAKE IT HAPPEN.
You know what scares me. I remember when they had Smash at EVO and despite everyone saying "No items" Evo decide to due items even though it wasn't the tournament standard. What if Capcom uses their influence to "make sure" gems are legal at EVO, forcing it's player base to buy the DLC gems.
Think about it. Think about how Mortal Kombat was at EVO this year. Yeah. Don't be surprised.
@43
i know, im i said that as a way to show that they have to make restrictions one way or another regardless, you know some things are for a fun aspect in a game such as console exclusive characters.....and hoping the gem system, and some are for compeditive players, which is why they restrict and ban specific things. i think they did something similar in cvs 2.....my bad i guess i should have explained a little better in the first message :/
@46
oh Apologies arent needed my friend :P just a little misunderstanding on both halfs.
and good question, i thought mortal kombat in evo went without a hitch :/ i was looking more at sf, tk, and blazblue
"The days of Capcom release deep, gimmick free fighting games are over."
Oh right, like the Alpha series... ohwait, custom combos.
You must mean MvC series... nope, probably not that, either.
Then you must mean Power Stone... lolno.
Oh, it must be SFIII... wait, is parrying a gimmick?
It has to be SFIV then... nope, I bet ultras are a 'gimmick.'
Is being able to pick assists in the MvC series a gimmick? Or being able to pick what Super Art or Ultra you have a gimmick? I don't know why the knee-jerk reaction is that any new system must be a 'gimmick' and will only cheapen high-level play, instead of the new systems being new venues to be creative in. The system was only really revealed in the last few days and we know ~basically nothing about it yet. I'm not 100% sold on the gem system, but if they pull it off well, it could be a really neat addition to being able to customize your team. Don't be so quick to hate change in any form.
Well, back to playing real hardcore fighting games like King Of Fighters. Capcom is just being silly.
well i think ono put just a little too many cherries on top of the icecream this time around (or gems lol). well lets hope this is just a mode that you dont have to play. i have faith in ono-son
love how everyone's all "hype! gonna be the new mvc!" up until now, but with one change the opinion has practically flip-flopped. It's not just "oh, this game's not gonna be as great", it's full on "not buying it!". ah, eventhubs. Personally, I think that the gem idea is horrible. Most ideas like this never work out like people hope they do, but this is still an awesome matchup for a fighting game.
I think the gem system seems like an interesting idea. If there`s 45 of them (or more) then that`s a lot of effects to play around with!
What I really don`t like though, as with other comments, is the fact that you have to pay more to get more.
I was getting more and more hyped for this game as news was being released, but reading about this this morning has really put me off. It`s like when you`re wanking over a porno and suddenly the camera cuts to the guy`s face. Eurgh! It was exactly the same feeling.
I don`t think I will even buy this now, certainly not straight away anyway.
But I may change my mind again once things become a little clearer
My only actual fear of the gem system is not being able to easily tell what your opponent is using for gems. If they get 10% damage boost for getting hit by fireballs, I'm going to be more cautious about throwing out random fireballs. What I'm most worried about is being 20 seconds into a match and find out that they have a gem that soft-counters my strategy against them at that moment.
The gem/cheap system is meant for newbs and that is it.
I can't help but think of the power gems from marvel superheros and even gem fighter. Lol. Anyway I'm sure it can be deactivated not a big deal. Jesus Christ not everything has to be tournament level some people just want to have fun and not take it serious.
as they said before (or Max said they said in SFxT breakdown from CC) this game won't have any heavy comeback mech so I'm quite sure there will be normal mode and gem mode
#58 People are complaining to make sure that it is an optional mode. All tournament play issues aside this is a horrific idea in that: me and my friend buy the game, i buy the special edition, he doesn't. We both pick Cammy and Chun Li. How is it fun or fair that i have a better Cammy and Chun than him because i spent more money on the game?
The mode itself is interesting and it would be a fun addition to the game IF they had their own specific modes such as gem vs, gem endless and NO gems in ranked. I don't see how a rank is a rank if people who don't buy the special edition instantly have a handicap.
It's as simple as this, Capcom are trying to find a DLC that everybody will have to buy, mo moneh mo moneh.
I'm gonna agree with #32 up there.
Street Fighter X Tekken actually has a lot of different techniques in it to remember. Gems add another layer to that experience. It creates a whole new depth to the game.
However...
I haven't watched the video, but judging from the comments, they've made a terrible mistake with "exclusive" gems via DLC.
It's kinda like how the best decks in Yu-Gi-Oh! are the ones that can dish out the most money for the best cards. If it comes to that, then that can possibly kill the game for a lot of people.
How about making a Normal VS mode and a Gem Vs Mode... Everyone is happy
This feels unnecessary, it's like they are trying to add as many things as possible to make the game unique even if it's unique enough.
Guess what? You'll be able to have both your fighters on the screen at the same time!
Guess what? We're adding Pandora Mode!
Guess what? We're adding gems that will make you stronger!
Do we really need all of this in the same game?
DOES ANYONE NOT LIKE TO HAVE FUN ANYMORE? ACTUALLY, DOES ANYONE NOT LIKE TO THINK ANYMORE?
It seems that people are hating on this system only because it requires strategy. LMAO, strategies = game sucks.
Good to know what the fighting game community is made of.
Lmao, how about we get the game and play it before we spazz about balance. I guess using gems is just like using yun in ae? Yun means I play with my stick in my butt and my dog runs across the buttons and poof I've won all fights! Cmon peeps.
Ok here's some legit questions we need answers to.
Is there a gem limit, like if I use all damage gems will scaling come into effect? Like out of 5 gem slots only 3 defense can be used at once?
Will there be access to all of the gems for everyone? Even the preorder exclusives?
While using attack gems does damage scaling change?
Aside from stat changes will these affect things like size of projectiles or area a command throw travels ie giefs 360 kick throw or ibukis slide?
Thanx Capcom for everything I love you all.
I you don't want gems/pandora play SF4. This is something new and refreshing and we'll see how it turns out.
Every time a new game come out it's the same thing with u guys crying before u even play it. I hope the ones who is crying don't get the game because i don't want any hate mail if i beat one of u guys.
Perks in fighting games, im not gonna complain before i play it, it will probably be fun in a casual setting, but we'll have a tier list for gems soon enough, probably see the same 5 gems on everybody.
And how will this work for the tournament scene if they acquired in a different fashion? Memory cards at tournaments now? im curious, it would be kind of cool if Capcom made a card system for consoles.
One thing is for sure, the future of the scene is looking great, keep the content coming
Dang, there better be an overall damage nerf then 'cuz it already doesn't take much to KO a character. Also, be on the lookout for that SF x Tekken Collector's Edition with the limited-edition Gem packs!
