Several members of the EventHubs.com forums took it upon themselves to gather online ranked match character usage stats for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. This started close to when the game came out, and unfortunately lost a lot of steam right the beginning of June.
C.Viper near the bottom. Just what I like to see. Makes me feel more unique for using her.
The percentage column could be deceiving as it seems to indicate that this is the percentage of times a character is used on a team.
But since teams are made up of 3 characters, that column should be x 3. So Dante is used on 24.96% of teams, Phoenix on 6.15% of teams, and so on...
@DeezeeKujaku i know what you mean man. I use joe, which kinda makes up for using sentinel.
Of course Dante was the most overused. Everyone thinks he's so damn cool with his trenchcoat and rebellious attitude and his guns...Wow. Let me tell you something. Every Dante I've ever faced has never done any combos that actually caught my eye. Just the same ABCS BBC Killer Bee BS. But hey, what're gonna do.
(goes back to playing Shuma-Gorath)
Lmao Dante my main is used the most. Still I haven't met a decent Dante though lol so it seems that doesn't mean much. Although sucks this lost steam by june, cause I think from june + people really started using Wolvie a lot but im sure most will still stick out.
And very nice
Top 5 makes perfect sense, yup every online scrub thinks they're Justin Wong Jr., Yipes Jr., Noel Brown Jr., etc, etc, etc,....
#19 I don't mean to hate on Dante. He's a really good character. It's just those new guys make him look like an absolute bastard of a character, kinda like the scrubs who pick Akuma and just throw beam supers.
And this is coming from someone who's adding Vergil to his team. And we all know what's gonna happen with him.
You like how She-Hulk and Spencer are next to eachother. Haha. People love that pairing.
@21 Very true lol, I agree. 99% of the Dantes I meet do day 1 combos and just spam Jump S all day not knowing its unsafe (Although online pretty much makes it safe >>) im adding Vergil to my team too, im afraid he's probably gonna be the new 1# used char lol.
This stopped at june and its not fully accurate right? cause you see allot of low ranks nowadays.
Chun-Li, Morrigan, and Wesker. I personally am glad most of them are low on the list.
#23 I love how they went on a date in Spencer's ending. XD They're best friends! :P
#20
Not so much. Top players pick top teams just as online scrubs do
They're probably too embarrassed to do this poll for SSf4 AE. Yun, Yang, Viper, Fei....I can imagine what the list would look like.
Bleh. To hell with Whorekuma. *likes Dante, so has no complaints*
Wasn't expecting Dante first, but Akuma and Sentinel are no suprises. Nor Wesker and Wolverine.

BIONIC ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRM!
I'm surprised to see Morrigan so high on the list, I thought she would be much further down.
7,1,14, in that order. I love my team. I'm the only Zero I've ever seen online that knows how to charge buster shot, and I'm the only Dante online that knows how to actually do real combos with him, and doesn't do jump S, unless im like 85% sure it's gonna hit, and even then I make it safe by cancelling it into air play on hit/block. So I'm not ashamed of having the #1 most used character on my team, he had an execution barrier (not that big really, although you think he'd be viper status, the way dantes online play him), and Zero is just tons of fun to play, and I had to learn how to always charge buster.
I pick characters that require learning, and training mode time. Which is why I'm picking up Viper , and am gonna be playing Dr. Strange, and hopefully phoenix wright is hard to use, cause I'm dying to play him.
It really does'nt matter at this point, and the stuff slowed down in July, we are in mid October and UMvC3 is around the corner.
People are gonna pick the best characters because they want to win, does'nt mean they are good. Keep using your characters, just don't pretend your gonna win 100% of your matches with low tiers. I a quickly warmin up to Wolverine and Spencer with my Taskmaster. I need work but im winning more of my matchs than when I had Hsien Ko and Shuma.
BIONIC....AAAAAAAAAAAAAARMMM!!!!!!!!!!
@46
I use Zero as my main and I ALWAYS charge the buster =P
I am surprised about the Zero usage, when I play online I never see any, and when I do they only know the standard ABCS-BBCS-Super. I am shocked Wolverine didn't come second, but I totally understand Dante being number one.
I use Dante, but at least I can do bold cancelling and actually do fancy combos xD
I hear ppl crap on MvC3 (e.g. Sanford) that it is a low skilled game where kids beat pros and g/fs beat their b/fs.
But trying to get a high level in this game (w/o much versus game experience) is a very hard climb.
Easier combos w/ the ABCS system. That's about it. And I actually think that combos are tougher in SSF4. I actually think combos are harder in MVC3 beause you have to be much more attentive to your positioning - i.e., executing them are easier but making sure your opponent doesn't drop out is hard. e.g., Sentinel's air combos using his A is so character dependent.
the pace seems much faster than SSF4, having to know how to deal with and know how to use your assists. Also, mixups in this game seem to be more complex (though not as predictable) as in SSF4.
I'm fairly decent at SSF4, but I'm still stuck in training mode w/ MvC3, after a month w/ the game.
So imo, this game is very tough.
But also, not as fun to watch or play as SSF4. It almost seems sometimes that good players are on auto-pilot. In "high level play" (to which we all presumably strive), it seems that getting the first hit will mean game over for the opponent. Whereas in SSF4, it takes more than one combo to decimate your opponent (unless your Makoto). Having played some 3s, I think it would be awesome to add a parry mechanic to SSF4 - maybe nerf it to half the frames (2/30 in 3s, 2/60 in SSF4)
Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point.
@51
self-edit, I think SSF4 combos are actually easier. PLinking, cancelling, FADCs, piece of cake. The only thing that I wish they didn't do was simplify the DP input. Not because I'm some high-minded jerk. Rather, I get alot of unwanted DPs and Supers. Not just me, it's been verified that DPs come out after all sorts of inputs; there is a video on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHd6G-...
Like one of the top commenters there stated, "if you want to hadouken and shoryu by accident, then you can be in a world of trouble."
@52
Pros have a hard time getting in w/ Chun. but at lower level play (no use of DHC glitch, misuse of assists, not knowing how to assist otg, and players not knowing how to properly zone), Chun's lvl1 kick super is easily hit-confirmed from ground ABCs and launches into easily executable aerial exchanges, which are themselves almost never countered online.
not to mention that mashing one button can actually get you somewhere w/ Chun, in low level play of course.
and then there are the desk infinite aerial head-stomp and legs. low level players think they are hot sh*t if they can pull off this loop just once, which is pie.
btw, I'm one of those low lvl players. But even I know that mobility is one of the most critical aspects of this game, and Chun simply has very little of it to show for.
#46 LMAO Dante and Zero don't require heavy training and buster shot is used by every zero player passed 9th lord status not a great feat spending all your time learing to charge buster shot while super jump teleport spamming heavy to get easy hit-confirms all day
I don't understand why Phoenix was so underused. This game came out in what, February? As soon as I got my hands on the game and went into training I realized how broken Phoenix was with 5 bars and dropped this game immediately. I remember when everyone played theory fighter and said she would be low tier because she only had 450k health.
as some have said list doesnt matter but its nice to see comparisons of what i thought just glad they nerfed sentinel i could beat him easy in the begining mostly cause theres sooo many people playing spamming the same stuff and still are but i maid it safe outthere to take more risks cant wait to play in nov and nemesis, hawkeye, taskmaster definitly
#46: We pretty much have the same mindset, im also like the only Dante I ever met that can bold cancel and doesn't just spam jump S. I also hate Zeros just for the fact that none of them charge buster and they are still dominating so easily, but I love Zeros that do.
Im also picking up Viper, and planning to main Dr.strange, so that's awesome lol. If you have interest in Vergil too we're pretty much at the same mind level.
@51: Hm, not to discredit you or anything, but im sure based on what you're saying that you're not actually decent @ SF4, and it might seem that way in the beginning where for example SRK mashing is veryyy effective lol. That game has a big learning/mastery curve.
As having played SF4 for years and this game since it came out I can guarantee you SF4 combos are not easier, its almost impossible to say they are easier actually due to a lot of BNB's being 1 frame links..and here..20 frame links (Or w/e) MVC3 combos are easy as hell imo lol and I play chars like Dante, & picking up Viper. I still loose in SF4 after so long, and I still struggle with certain combos but I could do every Dante combo in a short time.
And its also a pretty inconsistent game. Its a very, very fun game and Im def. buying UMVC3, but theres a reason most of the pro's were complaining about this game. Players get away with tons of stuff you can't get away with in other fighters, it has a lot of BS. Also an 8 year old beating tons of players and making it so far at Evo by abusing armor moves and up exchanges doesn't help the case either lol. He's a decent player though, but I doubt he would make it so far in SF4 due to the learning curve.
Damn. I forgot about that list.
It was just me for a while lol. But i had a few days with a very very hard time finding ranked matches. So i stopped for a bit, and just forgot...
Oh well. I'll help on UMvC3.
And yeah i was very surprised that i didn't see THAT many phoenixes. Kind of glad lol
"Keep using your characters, just don't pretend your gonna win 100% of your matches with low tiers."
One of the many reasons I gave up on this game. If you weren't using top tiers then you were just handicapping yourself.
That said, She-Hulk's placement on the list doesn't surprise me. But Trish's does. I thought she was pretty popular. I've even seen some pro's using her before. Very surprising.
(Dante beat out Ryu? Quickly Capcom, he needs to be top tier!
Anyway, so much for my argument Jill should be MVC3 Jill, would be more convincing if she was dead last.
Also: Shoutout to peeps who can actually play online, hopefully UMVC3's netcode is wonderful)
Not in order but im predicting Vergil, Doctor strange, Taskmaster, Nemesis, Ghost Rider, Strider, Ryu, Wesker, Dante, Pheonix Wright, And if they don't nerf him...Doom to be on the top. This is me guessing but im fairly positive on that list. Especially Vergil, Nemesis, and Doctor Strange.
@ 57 I think it's pretty safe to ignore your opinion for 2 reasons.
1) Dark Phoenix while powerful is still conditional. Not the type of character that will wipe out your whole team. As you stated yourself her health is pathetic.
2) People also thought it would be much tougher to get in on Sentinel and cursed his Drones assist. In many ways that robotic monstrosity is a bigger pain than Phoenix could ever potentially be.
Lol @ dropping a game due to one fighter, that's not even broken in this type of system. Way to not stay free ^_^
7, 11, 14 are my mains :D, they're not as low as I thought, yaaay!!!
Too bad that some people (mostly spammers) makes them look bad... =/
I sometimes use Wesker AND others I pick an Arthur/MODOK/V.Joe team, just for fun LOL...
Well, I'm a trish main. So the rest of this means nothing to me. I just build teams based around her, everyone else is pretty much a faceless moveset.
Well I think people are gonna pick who they want Dante at top well look at his design he is a sweet looking character
This explains why I lack the Full Roster trophy.
I love this hipster mentality of "I use an unpopular character, I'm so cool". Does it really matter who you use? Using Shuma doesn't automatically make you awesome
@79
Outside of Akuma, Dante and Wesker, I see Ryu the most, and I hardly ever see Magneto (alot of Taskmasters though). Oh and I ALWAYS face Hulk players, this is obviously because he's so mindless to play
I Use Wolverine, Hulk, and Zero/Sentinel. I use Wolverine and Hulk because those are my favorite superheroes of all time. I plan to use them in UMvC3 too, so if playing with them makes me a scrub, than a scrub I am.
HATERS! Who cares what people pick, if people like wolverine so be it he is one of the most popular X-men, wesker looks cool too it shouldn't matter who people pick it sounds like alot of people in here are just full of themselves, maybe alot of the people actually have jobs, kids, and don't have an infinite amount of time to play for hours on end learning combos, I got alot of buddies that love to play casually and I dont bash them they got things going on guess what anyone can pick these games up and be very good if they put in the time only difference is we play alot and train and "scrubs" which people love to call others are maybe doing important things like at work, or taking. Care of a sick parent, maybe changing diapers alot of you need to get off your high horse just because some people have a godly amount of time to train and others don't doesn't mean you should just bash people that ain't on your level instead maybe teach them something and make another hardcore player sorry for the rant not everyone bashes people all day but the ones that do know who they are you ain't special
I thought I was one of the only Chun-li users. But then again, I'm sure most of them only had her in their team as an assist character and nothing more. *Sigh* Chun really doesn't get any respect in this game to me. Hopefully, Ultimate will be changing that.
I think this says less about tiers than it does about popularity. Dante is far from the best character in the game, he's not even the best easy-to-use character, that'd probably be Wolvie or Wesker. Meanwhile She-Hulk is easily in the best 5 characters but she's waaaaay down.
I think most people on this list pick the characters they like. You have to climb the ladder a fair while before you see people using the best because they're the best. I mean, I use Wesker/Dorm/Dante and I decided on the first two way before the game came out. Ironically Dorm is the lowest tier chara I use and the only one I decided post launch. More ironically is that he's probably my best character.
I think the general public are gonna like the characters they think are cool or fun and will train with them to make them good if they made MODOK like S tier I still dint think alot of people would use him because of his design personally I'm really glad he made it but coolness factor and how people relate I think in the end is a big factor in most peoples character choices
The only characters I ever see are the top 18. I don't even know who the other ones are :P
What the f*ck? Why is Chun-Li used more than Haggar?
Shuma, C.Viper and Hsien-Ko are currently my most used online. I have 600 wins with that team. My previous team was Chun-Li, Chris and Thor.
I wonder how this data was gathered, I know I've used each character more than 30 times in ranked matches online.
@72
Cool. Some random on the internet is going to tell me Phoenix isn't a big deal when tournament placing state otherwise. Sentinel isn't even a problem and hasn't been since Justin Wong discovered Wolvy/Akuma AND then on top of that he got nerfed because you scrubs still didn't know how to play him.
Stay free? I dropped the game because I realized how retarded it would be with everyone picking Phoenix. Go watch tournaments. When someone loses, most of the time they go to the character select screen JUST to pick Phoenix as a last ditch effort. If I'm not mistaken, isn't that what Noel Brown did at Evo against Justin Wong?
Yeah, she's not a problem at all..
Phoenix still isn't all that...especially as a point character. You can tell yourself whatever you need to in order to justify the return but the game doesn't revolve around one character. Online, tournament or otherwise.
You're wrong frankly...and it's actually humourous how fail you're acting.
lol@ #99 being the worst Marvel Player ever to touch the game and raging so much about it he had to return the game lol and yet still so invested in the game that he watches all the tournaments and investigates all the news like who is the most used character online... 0_0
No MODOK love.
