Before Momochi was recognized as one of the best SSF4 AE players he was tearing it up in Third Strike. Recently, he made a post on ChocoBlanka's blog about which character you should play in Third Strike. He uses general terms and only covers the top 8 tournament viable characters.
Chun Li
The top tier character.
Quite easy to use and if you can hit confirm from c.mk and do kara throws, you should be able to reach a certain level fairly quickly. With that, by adding how to use your moves, small techniques of 3rd strike and
know the match up you are a decent player already lol
If you want to win systematically, it is recommended for the advanced too.
Ken
Recently, he isn't considered as one of the 3 top tier characters, but he is still strong. With various hit confirmation and kara DP's which may look simple but fascinating and has uniqueness depending on the player who is using him. It is also a good character learn the logic of 3rd strike and strong if the player who understands it use him.
He isn't a rush down character and in good balance, so you are required to know match ups. Thus not a character to use to win easily. I recommend him to anyone from beginner to the experts, but if I think about how solid he is, I recommend him to the beginners and players who just have started playing the game.
Makoto
One of the scariest characters. Karakusa is strong. You will be surprised if you imagine the SSF4AE karakusa. You are still fine even if the opponent dodges it with neutral jumps.
Her normals are good too and can do strong footsies against some characters if you use them effectively.
Her bursting damage, which can beat out many top tiers, are quite attractive, so I recommend her for intermediate players in that sense.
Tip from Rafael2487.
I agree MrPavy and your videos make me laugh like hell man.
@MrPavy
That's a given man. There are too many free ways to get out of Makoto pressure in SF4 that don't require taking risks. Makoto is the single scariest character in Third Strike. Her SF4 interpretation doesn't strike the fear of God in people like the original Dizzy Bitch.
3S Yang is really underrated IMO. He's the best character that no one talks about.
@#3
Yes, and I suppose that picking lower tiers makes you a more "honorable" player? >_<
@6
Why did you respond to the troll? Hang your head in shame and learn from your mistake.
(A 3S hater on Eventhubs? How original and unprecedented. Least it's not a mahvel hater, I guess.)
I bet that #3 plays low tier characters and always uses that as an excuse after he looses.
But since 3s has parries you can beast with anyone no matter if it is Q,remy or even sean.
3S legen...wait for it...dary. love it parry is the sickest mechanic ever put in a fighter, the possibilities and things players are capable of doing in that game is just insane and if you think low tiers don't cut it in 3S you need to look no further than Kuroda, and RX they will learn you up real quick. For some reason there are always alot of haters on eventhubs but to each his own I love every single fighting game capcom has made that I have played for different reasons except fighting jam my god I just couldn't bring myself to stomach it. each game has it's own way to entertain you in my mind and it's nice to have variety.
@11
I played ST and why should I cry?
And why is old sagat in ST more balanced than chun-li in 3s?
@12
I agree.
@11
O. Sagat is very good, but have various counterpicks: Deejay, Honda, Cammy, Chun-Li, T. Hawk, Guile, Vega, Balrog, Bison, Blanka...
O.Sagat is monster VS Ryu and Ken.
Supercade: Cauptain or PSN: Cauptain-BR, add. Lets plays some VS my friend.
@Johanneskodo
Why are you having a conversation with this guy? Seriously. Don't talk to trolls.
Today, I learned that over HALF the cast can be a counterpick to your character and still be very strong.
Comment section is hilarious as always.
On topic, I do feel Yang is unappreciated in 3S by some.
EX-slashes is one of the best moves in the game to use.Damage/stun and giving yang new hitconfirms is just too good.
funny thing is that the people that hate 3s suck at everything else anyway
You know what this is good find I did'nt know you could'nt jump Raging Demons n 3S. Call me anti social :P
I love 3rd Strike, very fun to play even if other characters are stronger to use. But I also like SFIV, they are both great games in their own right. No matter how simplified, nothing beats skill in both of them.
I'd disagree with Ken not being one of the 3 top tier characters, imo it goes Chun, Ken then Yun (SA3 only). Yun can be top tier in the right hands but compared to Chun and Ken his much harder to master and play efficiently. That's just my opinion though
@Cauptain
Lol, dude, SF III is one of the most offensive fighting games. The parry allows you to be good with anyone, especially rush down characters and even grapplers.
SF4 is designed to be defensive....if it had the parry mechanic, it'd be something else.
@20 if you have seen makoto players in 3S you would take Ken out of the top 3 she can get insane and her damage and stun is ridiculous Ken is very solid though a good all around pick
Makoto:
which can beat out many top tiers
beat out many top tiers
many top tiers
@22 yeah J and others are amazing players with makoto (j is one of the first players to make me see how genius this game was and to don Makoto).
I'd rate makoto high but i still think Ken is much higher. Makoto has to get close up and dirty compared to ken who can fight at any distance, alot of her normals and uniques are very long in start up and recovery compared to ken. This can also make her attacks become cannon folder for people to parry them as they are quite obvious. Ken also has aload of hit confirms (more superart HC's) and multiple combos compared to makoto.
Plus Ken's SA3 is one of the best in the game imo, compared to makoto's sa1 which can be parried simple unless combo'd and sa2 which again is very obvious unless combo'd (that karakusa to sa2 can also be a tricky one) and sa3, enough said haha
I'd rather take out yun if it needs to make up for my 3s main to take top 3 haha
I definitely put Chun at the top. Her ability to punish for massive damage (with meter) is amazing. It's not like she uses EX though, and with her turtling and amazing pokes, yeah that's really no biggie.
Ken is definitely solid. He's very powerful in general, but I kind of agree that he has dropped in rank because nowadays, unless you're chun, it's the mixups that really get you.
And that brings me to Yun and Makoto. They're both amazing in their own aspects. Yun is better IMO since you more or less get a nonstop genei jin, and if you don't have it, just jump away and build meter. Makoto has a solid mixup game in general, just have to get the initial rush down.
But like many of you have been saying, 3S comes down to your ability to read others and in the right hands, any character can do well. Except maybe 12 lol. Not hating, it's just that to do the same amount of damage any of the top tiers do, 12 has to do 5 times the work.
I won't argue about options though. The top 4 have been pretty stable, and I feel that it's because of the amount of options they have. Strange thing being that I don't feel that Chun has an amazing mixup game or vast amount of options, it's just that her zoning abilities with her pokes and easy hit confirms are just too damn good.
K I'm done :)
I completely agree with momochi, I think the ranking is pretty much
Chunli
Yun
Makoto
as far as ken being able to play from range not happening, try throwing more than one fireball at the right distance and you get huge punishes. 3rd strike is meant to be played in your face rush down zoning isn't the most important aspect, it's mostly footsies and knowing how to block/parry properly
briefly :
ssf4! oh i mean 'super low punch 4' which its zoning game , hadoken all the day with cross ups .
sfiii : ' fight for future ' the game system and design is precedent for its age. with parry system you can turn up the table in anytime.
to sfiii haters go play some mvc3
i still think AE makoto isnt as good as 3s makoto,also makotos frametraps in 3s were tighter
