With the impending release of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tomorrow many sites have been publishing their reviews for the game. All of the reviews and their respective scores are tabulated below.(#2 is right! And I love GI so fix this error!!!!!!!!!!)
I agree with the review on Game Informer.
- Replay modes in ANY game are always welcome.
- Some modes should have been included in vanilla (Spectator)
- Shuma and Jill being DLC is still pretty lame. (Even when they were already on the disc for the first game)
- Mega Man
Don't look at this comment as a rant, I'm still getting the game, it's just that criticism helps to make things better. Also, there's nothing wrong with having standards.
They gave Mortal Kombat a good rating because it was feature filled, with one of the best story modes ever and 4 player play. These guys are reviewing for the casual market and Mortal Kombat is a great game in that regard.
I think these reviewers aren't giving enough weight to the H&H mode. IGN didn't even mention it in their video review. I realize that they haven't had the chance to play it but to just pass this game off as a roster/balance update is a flat out lie.
Most of the reviews I've read have been fair and share the same criticisms. I strongly feel that the most of the generic modes or modes expected of fighters today such as spectator mode should have been in the game on day one. The lack of proper tutorial system hurts this game, especially this game since Capcom is trying its hardest to attract the casual market. I'll give this game a year for a discounted price or a new iteration at a discounted price before I decide to buy.
was expecting a 10 from everyone. now I cant get it.
@4
Not everyone plays fighting games. These reviews try to reach out to all gamers. Mortal Kombat had a great story mode to it and a lot of "Kontent" that kept most gamers playing it.
MvC3 had:
- Versus
- Trial/Training mode
- Arcade mode
MK9 had:
- Versus (Test your luck is MK's equivalent to Heroes and Heralds)
- Story mode (WITH CUTSCENES LONGER THAN 15 SECONDS AND A TWIST!!!)
- The Krypt (Loads of unlockables like concept art, themes, etc.)
- Arcade Mode
- Challenge tower
- Training mode
Mortal Kombat helped fighting games get into the mainstream as well. It has that brutal charm that most gamers had that made them want to pick it up. Honestly, MK was the first fighting game I played, then I played SF and MvC and loved all of them.

You are right.
But the thing about the fighting game is they are not single player adventure game. These reviews doesnt get that.
They dont tell its competetive/tournament worthy or not.
Gametrailers gave 8.4 for the graphics, im sure they gave MK9 a 9.9 But who cares?
They think graphics is about how realistic it is.
This game is about comics. And it fits there.
@13
Might have been for mouths not actually matching the words during hypers and taunts. Honestly, I thought it was pretty annoying at first. Maybe a few other things as well.
Otherwise I LOVE the way this game looks.
"If you waited until the inevitable Ultimate version to get into the Marvel vs Capcom 3 franchise then Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is definitely for you". Very insightful, IGN.
You reckon the exact thing that you're explicitly waiting for is what you're waiting for?
I really hope these guys don't get paid much.
Review ratings are subjective.
I never listen to what these companies rate these games cause its all just their opinion.
I think the movie Grandmas Boy is a 10/10, but if you look online at all the reviews they will say 3/10, 6/10, 2/10
Now if I listened to these reviews I would probably of missed out on the greatest movie of all time.
1UP " Doesn't do much for casual " Really? sigh I'd think X-factor, Easy Mode, stupidly easy controls H&H mode ( granted it won't come out til after the games release for free ) are enough for casuals to keep up with more experienced players, Jeez what do they want Dragonball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi gameplay?
These scores shouldnt matter at all!!!!! and they dont ! Midnight release here i come ....
@19 I waited... Well, still waiting... MvC3 was one big beta. I see Ultimate as the real release cause Ultimate is how it should of been and Capcom knows this.
Did anyone watch the video reviews? the reviews either suck or they dont know what they are doing or talking bout.....the score is bases off the actual package not the game it self...
Who cares lol. It really depends on how the reviewers look at it, if they take in consideration having MVC3 than I can see the scores being way lower. For the complete package however, the scores seem fit.
but w/e they are not real fighting gamers Im guessing
mvc3 is way better than MK9. brought them both, the latter because of its outstanding reviews, played mvc3 for 100s of hours, hardly touched MK9. different modes are nice, but it is the core game that matters most!!!. i think the reviews here are a bit low, i would give it a 9/10
Review seems fair to me and I loved vanilla MVC3 I mean were talking about a fighting game and on top of that an expansion to a fighting game. You can only go so deep in terms of content there. I'm getting the game no matter what and I'm going to be putting alot of time into it.
Honestly, who cares
what "pro" reviewers say. I don't need a scrub's opinion on a game.
Pretty good reviews, they all seem fair from what I can tell. What I really wanna see even though I'm not a fan is if Angry Joe is going to review this or just keep bitching about this game like always.
Those 1up review people are idiots. They dont know the characters they act like only 4 new people have been announced. And they havent even played the game... they review based off of videos they have watched. I will NEVER affiliate myself with that website or ever promote it. It doesnt seem like much that if you post a video on the 14th of november that you should know what you are talking about for a game that comes out the 15th. I think any person who reads eventhubs.com would be a much better revuewer EVEN not having played the game yet.
sorry about spelling errors i was mad and hungry lol
@31 He'll just whine or stroke his ego how he got Glactus Mode in or someting.
"See, they listen to me. I'm a pretty cool guy. If it weren't for ME, that mode wouldn't be in."
I can imagine that...
Reviews of this game are not going to stop me from buying it since I've been hyped for it for a long time. Also, IGN didn't talk about H&H mode because its not on the disc and they have a policy where they review what is packed in the game at the time of purchase. DLC like H&H can be reviewed later once it releases.
@13 Reviewers only look at a few things when reviewing a game. How competitive it is, is not enough because not everyone plays like that and the percentage that do is really small.
When reviewing a game that is an update they look at the follwoing things.
- Gameplay
- Story
- Graphics
- Balance
- Features
- Online
I think all the reviews seem fair, to be honest I thik UMvC3 should have got a 7/10. It would have put Capcom on notice that they can't half ass this stuff anymore. It's the 21st century now. Time to step it up.
I think Heroes and Heralds would have netted them a higher score if they did'nt do the wole "post DLC" BS.
@28 Your missing the point mcboone, to YOU MK9 wasn't good, but to evry 100 people and your opinon they disagee with you. It's not about what you think, it's the reviewer, and based on their experience with games even hardcore ones, MvC3 does'nt stand up to MK9 i terms of content. Thats it, end of story.
Hardcore is the minority, we automatically don't win out, like ever
#32: If you are talking about the first video on 1up then that is clearly a video that was shot after the first 4 characters were officially announced by Capcom because they about stuff that have only been seen in videos and its not a video review of UMvC3. I haven't read the 1up review yet, but I think that Haunts would have the most in depth UMvC3 review compared to all the other ones out there from the mainstream game reviewers.
(X-Play's review is up, and it's by none other than cl0ckwork himself!:
Pros:
All-star cast of characters
Simple, yet deep gameplay
Improved online features
The Cons
Confusing Heads Up Display (HUD)
No Mega Man X
)
@34
I wouldn't doubt it. And then he would add his crappy dialogue with Cobra Commander and all that crap added into his review so he can "try".
MK9 is a very great game, it's just a little broken (for tourneys at least)
anyway, these scores are pretty much the same as MvC3.
IGN(orant) sucks, i never listen to them. where's my Destructoid review?
People shouldn't worry about reviews so much. Or even rely on them. It's nice to see what other people think of it, but don't go thinking MK is better simply because it has a better score. After all, you don't the reviewer, what games he likes, his favorite developers, or even if he's a fan of the series.
Take the reviews with a grain of salt. If you do want to see if a game is worth your time and money, just look at gameplay videos and judge from that whether you would like the game or not.
Personally, I think they should just have Buy, Rent, or Pass ratings bar instead of a score from 1 to 10.
so according to the reviews this game is average at best. B, B-.
makes sense. typical lazy capcom.
and apparently doesn't have much hype around it.
http://games.ign.com/articles/121/121...
3 was hyped be default, after 10 years of nothing for the vs series, but watch the sales drastically go down this time around, as they should. this crap is getting old from capcom.
kinda like how sf4 sold well, then super didn't sell nearly as good even though it was better. (side not AE totally ruined that game)
only the hardcore marks come back for the 2nd and 3rd version wallet beatings. the casual fans they attacted for vanilla versions wave byebye and so do the sales. have fun maximillian, marn, jwong only these type of marks will be playing this trash.
@36 i agree
if it was me i give it a 7.5
1. its not all that different than the first one -10
2. online is now the way it should be, but nothing else major is worth getting excited about. they are still excluding stuff from the game such as alt costumes and god who knows what. character endings are still the same mines the new character of course. they could have done the SF4 approach and redue the story. the extra features in the game just dont seem to impress me. -15
although if this was the first installment i would give it a 9.0. if you keep supporting this they will do it again. it the same as if a little boy who gets an c on his test and his parents keep supporting it.
Mortal Kombat has a terrible story it is fun but the story is the definition of stupid.
Its understandable to say the least. The biggest complain is that there isn't "enough" changes to be considered a 40 bucks purchase. Of course, lets be fair that we are way bigger fans and a lot more from the game then any of the reviewers, but from a general point of view, they are actually being pretty fair in all these scores.
As far as I am concerned the scores given were too generous. Capcom screwed the fans by not keeping up to their promises and releasing a new game nine months after its predecessor's release and announcing it 6 months prior.
This game would have been a welcome a year from today with better consideration in its development and actually giving the casual and the hardcore audience the characters they want.
The game doesn't even have a record feature, to record online and offline matches nor does it has Heroes and Herald mode, and it seems that mode is online only. And since Capcom is so persistent in attracting the casual market then why there is not a "proper" tutorial mode to educate the novice and intermediate player. I am sure they could have commissioned the fighting game to take care of that side of development.
The whole 1990s model doesn't cut it for today's fighting games.
Reviewers are casual gamers, they have no idea wtf theyre talking about.
ask any of them "why" ultimate didnt just get a 100% score, and they tell u stuff like "i didnt like this character" or "i didnt like this BG". petty sh*t that they dont realize doesnt matter in a fighter cause its all about the long haul and the stuff real players discover along the way.
MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3 (ultimated too) are DEF the WORST capcom game ever, IMO 3/10
lets face it people who are mad this game got a lower rating that MK are out of line.
I see this game as an expansion MvC3 was bare bones minimum, MK gave content if capcom were to start giving games more content then that might help their ratings. As for H&H mode the only reason it is free is because no one would pay for it. I would rather have the costumes free than H&H mode.
Not saying I wont get the game but lets face it releasing the same game twice within a 9 month time frameć, having very little content and all other extras and DLC this game is lucky it got about a 7
Lets face it guys. MK is the new "standard" in reviewing games due to the fact that it has so many modes. The only game I see that can top MK in terms of content is SFxT. No one reviews fighting games for their mechanics, they look at the over all package.
MK9 got higher review scores than MvC3 but is it the more popular game for competitive players? How much gameplay and non-gameplay hours (streams, strategy, news, etc) have you spent on MK9 compared to MvC3? Shouldn't a game be judged on how much entertainment you get out of it as oppose to how much content they stuff into it?
It may be loaded with juice but is it worth the squeeze?
Let's face it, for the reviewers of this new age of gaming, UMvC3 it's a very very simple game with almost no upgrades from the previous version. They don't know how to land the most basic combos, but most of them have fun with the game, but some others recognize the obsolete patterns of the in-game mechanics, and what else could be said when you play a game that makes you feel 10 years back except for its graphics.
Like someone above said, the 90's are over, and Capcom knows they need to attract the casual gamers, but guess what it's not happening. Little kids from 10 to 15 doesn't even know about the game, we are the same generation trapped in time, but now we pay DLC's and sh1t for things we used to have in the very beginning (costumes... LMAO)
I've enjoyed these games a lot, they're part of my life, but I need them to evolve, Capcom has te resources to do it, it happened once with SF2, so why dont you put those @ss3s to work and implement new mechanics, gameplay, rules etc... SFxT its not enough, but a good approach.
Also I'm ready to watch Ryu's or Bison's siblings in action, I mean, It would be cool to grow with the characters (the way SF3 was doin it).
Im no mad with this game, I will enjoy it as much as hardcore fans, Ill be faithful to the community till my last breath, but please Capcom, dont trapt us in time, and if you need more money for the game ok take it all but stop the DLC horse#####, or make me pay for something of real value, like new characters
9.1 outta 10. Nice.
