Brady Games got the new Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 guide over to us to review before its official release tonight. We've put together a quick review so people get an idea if they'll want to fork out $19.99 USD for this new publication.Overview
This product is best thought of just like games, consider this an upgrade to the vanilla Marvel vs. Capcom 3 guide. The slate wasn't wiped clean — instead Brady took a similar approach this time out, but improved upon the original.
This publication is nearly 600 pages long, while the vanilla MvC3 guide was 400 pages. Character sections look mostly how you remember them, but they've been re-written with better strategies and newer information. The overall feel is just tighter from the first release. Strategies are more concise, with the authors telling you specific ways to utilize your moves, characters and assists.
This likely had a lot to do with who was involved with this project, as the credits page shows that both Campbell "Buktooth" Tran and Daniel "Clockw0rk" Maniago worked on this publication, as both guys are well known in the fighting game community.
One of the more subtle improvements I liked is that the ends of the guide pages are all color coded. This was done in the vanilla MvC3 guide, but the colors now span 3/4ths of the page, which makes it a little easier to flip open the book to the right section. Everything is broken out by if it's a new cast member, or a returning fighter from the Capcom/Marvel sides.
EventHubs Rating:
10/10
Brady didn't pay me a dime. They asked if we would review it, we accepted. That's it.
If you disagree with the review, feel free to add your own here.
I've bought a number of guides for fighting games over the years, most are ass. This one is terrific.
Well, gonna pick this up, since I heard about how good it was. I'm gonna need this after not playing Vanilla MvC3 for 6 months...
I'm getting this guide. If there's anyone else who wants to call Catalyst a sell out like Mr. Error3, I'll let you know if this review holds up or not.
I'm gonna say that it will probably be correct because I thought the Vanilla guide was surprisingly well done.
(I'm sure #1s get paid to make baseless comments like this...)
Guys, we're just an hour away from release. So I gotta ask. What team will you guys use Day 1?
Hm, sounds like this guide will really be something special. The only other fighting game strategy guides I can think of that were legit were the Anniversary Collection and Alpha Anthology guides.
"This publication is nearly 600 pages long, while the vanilla MvC3 guide was 400 pages". With 12 new characters and new modes(some of which should have been in the game already), was there supposed to be less pages? And looking at the guide, it seems like everything is super spaced out. They could have put a lot more stuff in between pages. Why advertise your guide saying it has more pages to an expansion? Kinda dumb imo. And second, saying they got pro's to do the guides isn't gonna do anything, considering combo's and strategies are gonna be worthless once people start making actual strategies for teams and characters 3 or less months down the line that will make the guide obsolete. You can probably find 70% of this information online, its a fighting game! Anyway, im still going to midnight release. And the guide isn't completely useless. I guess you can use frame data from it and stuff like that to start or counter argue....It does look pretty though.

I'd like to point out that almost all Dr. Doom players are still using the Buktooth loop that was put in the guide. If I'm not mistaken it was Dr. Doom's combo #1. This is just one example of the fact that some of these combos are really good.
#22 No it wasn't...People were having a hard time doing extended with Doom Day 1. He's not Dante. <_<
@23 Extended combos, that is. Edit button. I demand one!
Love how Catalyst doesn't let the comments made by people get to him. I admit, the SSFIV guide I bought was garbage, due to so many typos, incorrect inputs for moves, and more. When I bought the vanilla MvC3 guide, I was impressed. Everything was detailed from glossary terms to the strategies of each character. Definitely going to pick this one up too!
I still use the previous guide i downloaded to this day. It is pretty good and can save you a lot of time in learning combos fro it or making your own with especially with the frame data and previously made combos. I'll probably buy this one if i have the chance. [ if i see it being sold in Trinidad]
10/10? Oh Catalyst was definitely paid for this so called perfect guide. cmon.
10/10 doesn’t mean perfect because perfection is unattainable and a ten would be obsolete. Which would make absolutely no sense.
He thinks it’s good and didn’t noticed anything which needed improvement, hence the ten. Simple as. I considered buying it, but because it won’t be available in Europe at launch day, I guess I’ll just use the mighty internet instead.
What the hell, the guide's great, have you seen the damn SF4 guide? What a piece of trash.
Also, it's pointless to complain about the game changing, it's pretty much a given that some stuff will become obsolete with time. And mind you, this is not just for 'pros' (more like theory fighters), but for novices too, who'll have plenty of mileage out of it.
Still lmfao'ing at the "you can find this on the internet" retard, good job at totally missing the point of a paper guide.
Are you bad kids really that dense? Seriously...
Even if the guide scored an 8/10 that's still pretty damn good. Knowing Clockwork personally and wanting to support the community, this guide is a must buy for me and it should be for you as well. Not because I said so though, because it really is well crafted.
True, you could probably find close to 90% of the information contained in the guide online and for free. However, for less than $20 you have it right in front of you while you play, color coded and nicely laid out so that's it's easy to follow.
Is the guide perfect? Nothing ever is. Will the combos and strategies be outdated within a few months? Some maybe, but not all. Again, you can pick this up on Amazon for less than $15 I believe and for 600 pages full color that's a god damn deal.
Hell if this doesn't convince you then nothing will and you're most likely just a bad kid who sucks at this game anyway and even this guide + the online resources wouldn't help you anyhow. Stay free EventScrub Kiddies.
I for one Loved the guide. Well mostly because CEO gets a mention on Page 16 :) http://i.imgur.com/BtmAx.jpg
@15 you fail in two points IMO.
When i read that the original had 400 pages, and that this one has 600, i just used that info as to what was added.
plus, if he said that info has been reconstructed and all that, it means its not the same 400 pages with 200 more.
I also took the "professional gamer" reference as a tip to say people who are well into the game were involved in this, it gives some trust to the buyer. most of the times when i read a guide i cant 100% trust it cuz i dunno where the info comes from or how reliable it is, that mention to them there, helped.
and @35 Not sure if trolling or just fanboy of UMvC3 lol.
Event hubs was asked to do so, if you are asked to do a favor (also getting copy in advance) might as well do it, just for the sake of it. It means more, more are visiting eventhubs and respect it and thats just great because we will have eventhubs for long time!
Some of you find the most obscure things to complain about. I wonder how people like you socialize in person, or if it is in a social circle made up of "glass half empty" types as well.
He posted his thoughts, his rating is basically that it's excellent. And yes, pretty much every guide can be considered 'obsolete' when people flood the internet with info for any game, fighting games especially. But this is amazing day 1 material and it has input from experts of the game. Nothing to scoff at.
Amazon has this guide for like 12.99, so if 20 was too much for you, 12.99 should be up your alley.
Do some of you even know how reviews work? @Except not all of us always have a computer to access information online at all times especially when your not playing at your house/apt. Not only that but its a lot easier to gain access info on the fly (for example when your playing a long set of matches or waiting your turn)from guide rather than looking it up online.
@18 if you think this guide is an 8 then which fighting game guide released outside of japan would you consider a 10? @29 Did you not read the 5th post I don't think he cares for every fighting game guide.
@30 Its a review for a guide do you really think brady is going to shell out cash for a good review when people are going to buy this guide even if this review wasn't posted up due to it being one of the two best fighting game guides released outside of japan(the other one of course being the original mvc3 guide.
@32 I guess you never got a 100 percent while you were in school. In the end do some of you know how reviews work? Compared to every fighting game guide(with the exception of the iriginal mvc3 guide) released outside of japan this one is most definitely a 10 out of 10. Those of you that think otherwise most likely think the MK9 guide is a 10.
First response was directed @15 sorry forgot to add ya.
I'm sure Catalyst gets paid to write reviews like this....
