Todd Jefferson, Marvel's Vise President of Production for Games did an interview Comic Book Resources about various topics but mainly focusing on Marvel's characters that made it into the game and some that did not.
Were there any fighters that didn't make the cut in "Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3" that you wish had?
Of course! Characters like Blade and Black Panther were on the list in the early stages of the game's design. When we got into the mechanics of the characters many dropped off for one reason or another. For Blade, his abilities were almost identical to Deadpool's, and Pool's characterization, teleportation and ability to break the fourth wall won out. Black Panther -- a favorite of mine ever since "Secret Invasion" -- was ruled out because characters like Taskmaster already duplicated a lot of what Black Panther would do on screen. Building the right character roster is tricky work, but in the end, I feel that we put together a broad spectrum of old and new characters for both versions of the game.

There's plenty of characters they could have put in.. But we can't be greedy. They have a very solid unique roster right now... my only complaint, if any, would be akuma and ryu. Instead of TWO SHOTOS... They shoulda took one out and replace it with any1 with a different style. Guile/charlie, cody, adon, blanka, alex, guy, bison... ANY1. But other than that. I'm very happy with umvc3.
My personal request if they were to have any DLC characters in the future would be..... Juggernut, Charlie, Omega Red, Bison, and/or Anti-Venom.
Shame about Blade, but he really hasn't been in anything in a long time and his moves probably wouldn't have been too exciting. Black Panther I just don't see as being too interesting in a fighter like this.
Shame about Octavius though.
Over all though I like the characters that made it in and if they do go with character DLC I'd be very interested to see what characters they go with and what they can bring to the table.
@4 Black panther is known to use a sword from time to time, as showcased in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, but I dunno where they're getting the bow & arrow from, and BP definitely wouldn't use a gun.
But, I'm not broken up over it. I quite like the current roster, even if I would've chosen different;y if given the chance.

I'm not trying to be a butt-hurt fanboy, but I'd have rather seen Black Panther in there 100 times over Taskmaster. Taskmaster is cool and all, but Black Panther is a monster.

I think they were looking at She Hulk and Hulk as well as Wolverine and X-23 as a male and female stand point of view. "Males fight different from females." Or maybe they didn't want too many characters doing too many similar things. Well I don't know of course, but that could make sense in terms of their thinking. How would you make Blade's move set compared to Deadpool's. Perhaps of course they could still dig deep and think creatively. I always though of Blade having Silver Samurai's ninja stars (or just throwing big daggers) like Make him more sword base except he uses two weapons on sword and a knife in the other hand or maybe he could simply switch from different weapons like Amaterasu ex: L= Knives and Daggers, M= Swords, and Heavy or H= Guns.(The problem with this, is now it makes him kind of like Chris) He could have a super to become stronger, faster,and gains energy (not just into red health) after he bites you. Now that would make him original, otherwise he'll be hard to make original.

Also it's not a matter of "well they should have picked this character over this one" as it might have been "Marvel okay us to use X-23 and Taskmaster but Black Panther's still up in the air"which I rather do the characters that are okayed
I think its kind of stupid how Capcom and marvel limit themselves. I don't think a lot of people would be upset if a few more street fighter or x-men characters made it. I mean, the majority of characters in Marvel universe that is popular originated from X-men. Cyclops and Gambit should of made it. They are so unique and there move-sets are both nostalgic and popular. Who doesn't remember Gambit's royal flush or Cyclop's ginormous hyper beam. I would of also liked to see Bison and Jedah.

you run a major corpation where legal matters suchs a licencing characters are a big issue and you can end up paying millions in fines for breaking contracts then come back to me and say it's stupid because literally Marvel at this point and time has no say on spider-man in movies they can't probably even say "Ben Parker" in a movie without Sony Pictures saying "HEY HEY HEY! @30 thats completely untrue, Xmen and Street Fighter are the most popular characters to people that know nothing of the companies themselves. Once you actually learn about Marvel, the Avengers becomes the main focus and with Capcom, it becomes the wide variety of unknown Gems like Okami and Godhand.
Thats why people requesting Venom, Psylocke and Ken are clearly outsiders because there are far greater options once you get to know the series themselves

If you read Modern Blade (the ones after the movies) he uses a guns and Katana sorta like Deadpool and he has unnatural speed and Strenght something deadpool shows off in this game. It's not hard to think they came to similar concuslions invovling movesets

TRUTH YOU SPEAK, especially when you consider people instantly go for Eddie Brock's Venom, Not Mac's(The original Scorpion) or Flash Tompson's Venom just Eddie. Nor do they realize as with all of the early capcom games they took alot of liberties with the characters especially Psylock and Gambit.
So where the f*ck is Juggernaut? Capcom wanted him, most fans wouldn't be opposed to him, and he was fairly popular in older games. Is it because he doesn't have a new movie coming out? Come on, give me a break with the excuses.

said it once i'll say it again. capcom and marvel need to strike an episodic deal for two fighting games
one mutants only, one all other marvel characters. recapping major comic cross over events. that way you don't have to worry about the mvc clone conundrum and you have tons of opporunity for dlc that people would like... or whatever
Juggernaut was a pretty boring character in MvC2, the 90s cartoon, the movies and even the comics. He really doesn't have anything new, fresh, or interesting to add in terms of moves and gameplay potential.
Although I admit I'm somewhat surprised he wasn't included due to his roll in the Fear Itself event.

Finally someone else on here that 'gets it'.
If you only ever know Marvel characters from the 90s cartoon and MvC2, I would argue that they're not really your favorites. Check out a comic arc involving them, explore them. Check out some other Marvel comics, and I think you'll find a wealth of characters more interesting than those included in the 90s X-Men cartoon or MvC2.
ShadowKnight, I didn't want him and I use to be a big fan of his, the thing is Cain's only power is to be an unstoppable object, not create otherquakes or anything his only power is to be unstoppable. Which even then some of the heavy hitters like Hulk have been able to put him in his place, since at the end of the Day Cain is just dumb muscle who has no real motivation anymore.
you've got venom[current] anti-venom[who'd have classic moveset and new techniques] blade and black panther could really be explored. and alternate versions could be explored [current or marvel knights doc ock.
while the mvc3 system works well, it works best when you have one of each role. if they took it back to war of the gems or children of the atoms style with mvc2 style or sumilar button layouts but borrowing/tweaking some mechanics from the newer titles they could really make a stellar product. add nuances with a more complex system [rereleasing the same street fighter with slight albeit significant changes, i'm looking at you] and you've got a slightly toned down [compared to marvel 3] but still fun game to play with characters that aren't filling roles but bringing themselves to the table
So capcom has ryu and akuma. Dante and virgil. But we can't have taskmaster and black panther. Or deadpool and blade. that is just stupid.

Basically all the characters that have movies coming out have things going on in the comics making Marvels side one big Advertisement which in turn cause people to think it's Capcom's fault that their favorite Marvel hero or villain isn't in when it's not.
Charge characters don't really work in MvC3. Chun-li only keeps the spinning bird kick as a charge move. Forget about having Blanka, Guile, Bison and the others.
Call me a cynic, but it's reached the point where I've really stopped listening to their "excuses" when it comes to this kind of stuff.
As far as I'm concerned the characters included are all chosen for reasons that exclude factors such as feasibility as mentioned in the interview, be it market appeal, promotion due to the characters featuring heavily such as in a movie or current series, or something else.
I think it's been proven time and time again that nobody can be completely written off, especially if the reason is "He doesn't fit in the game/we dropped him/the game can't handle it". Characters like Frank West, Sentinel and a few others prove this.

your statement is untrue, when you have a game like mvc3 that uses 3d models instead sprites and have a set date to finish everything, asking for more characters that is based on one series in a company is selfish especially because there are more series and character by marvel and capcom that have yet gotten a chance to debut in the series, and by contently badgering them because they didn't include a character that can easily be played in a previous title, its not only annoying but may take a spot of a possible Newcomer...

Iron Fist didn't even have his own comic during fear itself he had to piggy back on to warmachine's and the main characters of Fear itself were the Chosen(None who appear in either version MVC3) and the Fearless(who a large majority of major characters are in MVC as a series already)
The Avengers thing has been around since the and all the avengers you listed beside Hawkeye who are in UMVC3 have been an am MVC game before hand
Taskmaster's "Major" event was 3 issue mini series from last year I read it 2 weeks ago, and beside giving more characterization to Task, it doesn't have any other major effects on the marvel U. Kinda like Cloak and Dagger's spider Isiland mini.
Return isn't a major comic event it's just the never part of his story.

Im sorry but either the developers have NO imagination or they lack the ability to create new content for characters. Taskmaster like Blade and Black Panther? Yet we get Vergil who also has a sword and has some Dante attributes! And here is the crazy thing, Taskmaster leans towards playing like Hawkeye before Hawkeye was even a character. What kept Hawkeye from NOT getting in?
Im not whining here, but im just seeing a pattern that does'nt make sense to me. Even if the current cast of characters have some distinctive qualities, you can't deny the majority of the cast are actually lesser versions of other characters.

@69 Not really. Taskmaster's gimmick is that he can copy movements, physical skills and fighting styles by watching them in action. Black Panther just has enhanced senses combined with tech from his native country including dual-wield energy daggers, metal disolving claws in his gloves and a cloaking device in his suit amongst other weapons. I'd say X-23 with her focus on claw weapons and the ability to turn invisible during her Lv.3 has more in common with Panther from a possible gameplay standard but Taskmaster?

I'm not Capcom, nor are you marvel. the thing is we don't know what they had in terms of movelist, also while he has enhanced strenght he's also going to attack from a distance because hes smart enough to know NOT ENGAGE HULK in hand to hand combat (someone forgot to tell X-23). He's also got the reflexes to COUNTER attacks if he's engaged in hand to hand. Also the cloak is rarely used if ever.
What they probably had is moves that had similar functions to Taskmaster such an attack like Aim Master to lock down or keep people away, or a counter move like Secret Move to counter an attack into an instant hard knockdown. they might not be similar on the surface but the moves that capcom and marvel were okay were very similar to Taskmaster's developing moveset.
I find their reason for no black panther to be utter BULLSH1T!!!! How the hell are they similiar???! Other than the fact they fight with a weapon something they all DO! They included hawkeye who ppl excluded because all he does is shoot arrows which t master can do. But yet he is different!! Youre telling me with the proffessionals that get paid for this couldnt come up with anything??!! If you want to get technical Taskmaster is similiar to all of them so why include anyone right? because Unlike Iron Fist as I said above, he's not all about hand to hand he's a thinker and also he's a warrior not all warriors are about close ranged battle. On blade, he can't teleport and has gadgets like that boomerrang from the blade moves, as well as guns semi auto guns he uses a lot more then a single shot like Wesker, as well as his Katana.

Real talk, I'm salty they didn't put Amadeus Cho in there. Ideally, it would be Cho with Herc jumping in for a few of his special moves, but mostly with his calculations being projectile-like moves and his mace being his main weapon. But hell, didn't they deconfirm BOTH Iron Fist and Ghost Rider for vanilla for just being "punchy dudes?" Maybe Panther still stands a chance for the next version. =/
Also salty that they haven't put a single Breath of Fire character in aside from as a card in that damned Heroes and Heralds thing. Ryu or Nina from Breath of Fire would have been really good, really interesting characters.
But I guess that's just me and most of the fans out there just want Venom and Megaman. There's always UMvC3: Next Edition though.

Characters are going to have similar movements, it would be TIME consuming and MONEY consuming to redo each character from the ground up. By similar they are talking Moveset wise and yes, some characters do have similar moves, but that doesn't mean they are totally alike. Hell, with UMvC they even make Ry u pretty different from Akuma

I don't know, as much as all of these Mega Babies annoy me, I think MMClassic could be a really cool DLC character. I didn't think so at first, but seeing what they did to Frank from TvC to Ultimate makes me have hope that Mega Man could be interesting.

I agree wit U 2an extent. But I doubt it was due to racism on Marvel's side. Thou from wat I've heard and remember from when the original MvC3 was announced, they didn't even want 2use Storm. Instead they planned on using Elektra, but she apparently didn't make the final cut, along wit Juggs.
As 4 Black Panther being 2much lyk Task, how? The only similarity is that they both hav swords. If anything, BP is too much lyk X-23. And Blade could've been made far unique if they wanted 2, but they didn't. I would've prefered Namor and DD honestly.

@112 well if its anything. most of the characters you named are from the capcom side and would have little to no effect on BP and Blade inclusion (seeing how they're from marvel) and marvel pretty much deicded who would be feature in the game. But who knows, If this game ends up having DLC characters (other then Shuma & Jill) they could possible get in.

They coulda added War machine, re-vamped him and made him a "heavy" version of the IM armor. More of a keep away, long range munitions type of tank/beast.
It's ok, we got Dante and Dante ver2, wolverine and girl-wolverine, Akuma and his neglected-red-headed-step-child-super-saiyan nephew Ryu, a catgirl, a tentacle monster, and a non gamma powered lawyer......

I disagree, Sam's great and tons important. He's been working as Cap's sidekick and equal since B4 Bucky became Winter Soldier. And when Cap went up against Skadi in FI, it was Falcon who fought along side him, not Steve.
I prefer Falcon 2both Blade and even Luke. Thou I really do like Luke, he's awesome 2. As for War Machine, I never really cared for him. He always seemed kinda like an uncle tom 2me. And for Shuma, how he makes it into games amazes me. How his name comes up in comics as part of magic spells amuses me. lol.

I don't know why ppl are blaming Marvel for this. Capcom is the one that turned down using Panther and Blade. Marvel made them available and Capcom made their excuses and got them cut. I won't support this game because of this BS. Black Panther is highly requested. Taskmaster wasn't. If he weren't in this game no one would care about him. Hawkeye was added and capcom didn't think they were similar? Taskmaster is SUPPOSED TO COPY PPL, so why is him doing so with black panther a problem but not with Cap and Spiderman and the ArrowBoy?
If anyone has ever played MUA1 Black Panther uses Energy Daggers for his normals and special attacks he rarely uses his claws. These Energy daggers are shown in Avengers EMH the cartoon to be able to shape shift into various weapons like a syth, sword or a spear. That's unique. Capcom obviously just didn't want to use the characters because well....one can only assume the worst.
She-hulk and Hulk are similar in powers yet were made different in gameplay. Phoenix Wright was given made up gameplay. X-23 and wolverine were given made up gameplay that allows them to vanish or shoot energy from their chest. Storm and Magneto are so similar that they both just got the same new move. Nova is a joke of a "new" character, he's just a mix of Ironman and Skrull. Ryu/Akuma. Strange and Jean. Dante and Vergil. Yet when the black characters are brought up by Marvel Capcom say WHOA THERE! We can't add because they both walk on two feet!
I won't support this game because of this BS. Capcom decides to use their limited imagination for She Hulk and her car summons/Lamp posts, X-23 and her vanising act (something Panther can really do), Hulk grabbing comets, Wolverine releasing energy, Hawkeye's Level 3, and The entire Phoenix Wright moveset but can't think of ONE thing for the black guys.

@97:Considering the fact that the game is becoming more projectile-based, Classic Megaman would be a perfect addition to UMvC3. Nevermind his weak-a$$ MvC2 iteration...Classic Megaman alone, has(possibly)over 11 friggin games!! Taskmaster? What, Blackpanther would be too similiar to Wolverine if anyone. Though he is more like a Wolverine and Caps combination in the comics imo.
He would work as a character with more Ibuki style moves, throwing weapon for projectile, fast mixup options, dash moves and rekka style attacks.

black panther would be a replacement for the style that sabretooth had in mvc2. also.. its better that everyone one just accepts that marvel is all about marketing at this point. half of the vanilla roster was a mix of who marvel and capcom wanted, and now its all who marvel wants to promote for marketing. its a shame but its just the way it goes. i miss cable and cyclops but hey, i guess marvel doesnt care what the fans want. capcom at least took some fan demand, but still. there is no reason why they cant keep making characters untill we have a roster of 70 characters. i mean, now why would they want to do that and actually make the fans love them?.. they wouldnt. they should let us raise our own money to fund the characters we want.

I'm pretty confident at least x-23, she-hulk, modok, and sentinel will at least have cameos in the next 4 movies released by marvel. Will laugh my ass off if rocket raccoon gets a movie, though, hahaha.

Um... The Guardians of the Galaxy, the team Rocky is part of, is showing up in The Avengers cartoon in their second season and the already announced, or strongly hinted, that GotG are getting their own movie made. Also, Hawkeye is in The Avengers movie next year and MODOK has made numerous appearances in The Avengers cartoon and was a rumored bad guy for a future movie.
The other characters they probably just want to promote for comic reasons.
Also, why is it wrong for Marvel to want to promote characters it deems relevant to its current business model? You obviously don't run a multi-billion dollar business.

Most of the cast is similiar to someone else thats backwards logic. Hell Jill and Frank were similiar and they changed Jills moveset to accomodate Frank.
Deadpool and Blade I can see they both has guns and a sword but so does dante and he is nothing like dealpool. Deadpool rarely uses his sword and they could have made blade's combat more sword oriented and he is a vampire. Now tell me they couldnt think of something unique to come up with for a vampire.
Black Panther I totally disagree with he has such a huge arsenal that they could have gone a ton of different ways with his combat design.

My gripe isn't that they're trying to make bank. It's that they're practically forcing some really s**tty characters down our throat, even capcom is guilty of it.
Not a single character in MvC3 isn't being actively marketed. How many characters has the community gotten that we've asked for? MvC3 is a marketing tactic, I don't even consider it a real fighting game.
And you're right, I don't run a multi-million dollar business, but is it really rocket science to just put in characters that the fans enjoy? I don't know how Frank West, Rocket Raccoon, Nova, Iron Fist, Hawkeye, or Ghost Rider made it into the game over Venom/Carnage, Megaman, Cyclops, or Psylocke.
How about some darkstalker love? Talbain/Raptor anyone? Gill from 3rd strike would also fit well into mvc3. I don't even play 3rd strike/darkstalkers, just anything is better than the ENTIRE AVENGERS CAST, MARVEL. Marvel is owned by nazis now, though, so I guess we can't expect too much from them.
