Speaking with RedBullUSA, a few more of the ins an outs of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's Heroes and Heralds mode was explained by Capcom's Ryan McDougall. Notable details include that gamers will select which side they want once a week, and you'll receive mini-prizes for doing various things.
What’s the new Heroes and Heralds mode like?
Ryan McDougall: It’s a free piece of downloadable content that will be available post-launch. Every week when you play online for the first time, it’ll prompt you if you want to be on the Heroes or Heralds team and it’ll keep track of how many wins and losses you get as a virtual team worldwide. You’ll get mini-prizes at the end of the week for various things. It’s like a collectible card system, when you start a match, choose three cards out of over 100 and they will affect your character. We’ll have little bonuses, things like double jumping, extra damage, or allow you to turn invisible at certain points. It’s gonna be a heck of a lot of fun. It’s not meant to be as serious in tone as the standard game – more wacky, over the top, and fun.

So let's just say that someone doesn't have any online capabilities on their console, they wouldn't be getting this mode¿ Awesome.
@#1 Mikeydactyl:
I found a positive way to bitch about it. :P
A mode that satisfies my completionist, OCD collecting tendencies and my love of fighting games? For free? Damn it Capcom.
*uses Start with 5 meter card with One Team Army*
*gets flamed to oblivion*
:D
hero's all the way unless u gotta be herald for certain cards to be unlocked :s
"RM-This is the version that will probably be used at tournament for years to come."
THAT MAKES ME WANT TO WAIT!
@9 Good possibility that the cards might be split between Heroes & Heralds and I'm talking the cards themselves. You play Heroes team you get heroes cards etc etc. I could see that as a way of giving a good reason for players to explore and try new characters/teams. I'm curious as how the roster selection is gonna work though. Split right down the middle so if you pick 1 "Hero" type character, you can't pick a character from the "Herald" side. Might lead to interesting teams. Hyped for all of this as something to do on downtime or just as a break from ranked or have you, and could just be fun with friends online.
@5, sounds like a great plan.
Ill use Start with 5 meter, one team army and a speed boost card.
Then I'll play Phoenix (not wright) =]
@7
My god you guys, the stream is like the new Megaman.
They were kind of vague about the "prizes" (probably intentionally). I'm wondering if it's based just on wins or certain objectives, and if both factions will get different things.
Not like it matters anyway since picking sides is just a gamble every time.
Yay! Free DLC! Although... in regards to DLC, the most important thing I want to know is if they're still planning on adding new characters as DLC! And only then would it be a SURE BUY for me!! :D This sounds really cool though!
Love love love the idea! I'm a simple guy when it comes to fighting games I just need Vs, Training, Online but this is pretty cool.
I think this mode will be a success among casual players, so I wonder why Capcom doesn't try put it in the disc.
Capcom has a bad reputation for releasing short games in order to release another version, so I think that the richer the game content is the better for the initial reception, which is very important in this industry, especially during Q4. Also, since the gameplay will definitely be more balanced, adding more meat or fat (depending on how you see it) could help the meta review score--which also influences sales.
This is a perspective in consideration of casuals. We, hardcore, will probably buy for the gameplay alone.
I know that DLC is a way to keep the game relevant with buzz post launch, but I think that the game has enough modes to warrant a constant stream of DLC. The H&H modes could ship in the disc with a fewer cards, and then get more with DLC.
You know someone is still gonna get salty even though your not even supposed to take this mode seriously.
@ 11 I don't think the roster is spilt for Heroes and Heralds, I think you can basically pick who ever you want, only Heralds will be those metallic galactus colors. I think some people will join the Heralds team for that alone..
inb4 someone b-tches about something that is free, not a part of the main game, and meant for casual players.
