A blog was posted over on the Capcom-Unity site discussing Street Fighter X Tekken's gem system.By the way, do you think the total number of Gems is 50? 100? Hmm, I don’t think so… Tons of Gems are in preparation! The best part is still to come!
Capcom is also releasing the GodsGarden X Capcom SSFIV AE East vs. West Online Showdown matches. You can see the first 4 matches after the jump.
Capcom is releasing 4 matches on the following days for a total of 16 matches. They're posting them on the Street Fighter Channel.
100 GEMS?
Only 3 can be equipped per match...
HOW THE HELL IS THAT GONNA MAKE TOURNEYS RUN FAST?
"I want this one...no this one...nah not really...how about that one...no...maybe I should counter pick with this gem..."
If they cant make the Gems and Pandora work how can we trust the characters will be balanced...
OR
If this will be the final version and no 'Super SFxT' will release a year later?
WHAT'S THE POINT OF HAVING GEMS , CROSS ASSAULT AND PANDORA JUST TO KILL ONE LIFE BAR ...
@3: Im almost certain that there might be multiple Gems having the same effect only greater.
E.G Dmg gem: 3%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%. And maybe the more you grind and/or collect the better ones you unlock. Most would go for the highest ones depending on the activation req. I guess
BUT THERE SO PRETTY!!! I WANNA USE THEM ALL!!!!!!
@3
Since there are so many gems and there's the option not to equip any, maybe they won't be used in tournies. I can't say for sure of course, but like you said it does seem quite inconvenient so I think that would be the go-to option.
The real issue, I think, isn't so much the amount of time it takes to pick them as much there's the possibility of whoever owns the console they're playing on at a tournament doesn't have all of the gems unlocked (assuming they have to be unlocked of course). This grows exponentially worse for when multiple consoles are in use in a single tournament.
I don't have any issues with gems, but I don't see them being used in serious tournaments due to the reasons outlined above.
WHERE DO YOU GUYS GET THIS CRAP ABOUT AN OPTION NOT TO EQUIP GEMS , IT WAS SAID OVER AND OVER THAT GEMS ARE MANDATORY
@9: I doubt the damage goes that high (damage already looks kinda high as it is). The reason there are so many (I'm guessing) is that it's the same effect but it's activated in many different ways. So maybe 3 crouching lights or 2 jump in attacks or something, which some characters have better than others.
PEOPLE NEED TO ASK SETH KILLIAN THESE QUESTION ABOUT GEMS 'CAUSE THIS MIGHT BE THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL ....
1: IF A PERSON USES AN AUTO-TECH GEM AND AUTO-GUARD GEM DOES THAT CREATE AN AUTO-OPTION SELECT
2: CAN GEMS BE OPTION SELECT LIKE IF I DID A MOVE WHILE HAVING ON AUTO-TECH GEM WILL IT AUTO-TECH IF MY OPPONENT GRAB WOULD BEAT MY MOVE THE SAME GOES IF I HAD AN AUTO-BLOCK GEM ON...
3: AUTO-BLOCK GEM .. CAN YOU MANUAL BLOCK EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE ENOUGH BAR TO AUTO-BLOCK WHEN YOU HAVE THE AUTO-BLOCK GEM EQUIP...
4: ARE THEY OPTION SELECT GEMS
5: ARE THEY DESIGNATED SLOTS FOR GEMS MEANING CAN I HAVE ANY COMBINATION OF GEMS OR MUST SOME GEMS BE IN SLOT 1 WHILE OTHERS IN SLOT 2 OR 3 ...
6: ARE ALL GEMS UNIVERSAL AS IN CAN I GIVE ZANGIEF MORE HEALTH OR MORE DAMAGE AND IF SO IS IT TO THE EXTENT AS OTHER CHARACTERS WHO DO LESS DAMAGE AND HAVE LESS HEALTH NATURALLY ...
adds that it's possible not to select any gems before a match, but there isn't a no gems option which locks them out of play.
but there isn't a no gems option which locks them out of play.
REV UP THOSE GEMS CAUSE I SURE AM HUNGRY FOR SOME SF X TEKKEN
@19/20
I never said there was, but what's important is they don't have to be used in tournaments. While it'll be an issue online for those who don't want to face people with gems, at least people worrying about them wasting time (amongst other things) in tournies can take some solace in the fact tournament organizers can simply say 'no gems' and people will have to play by those rules.
WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GET THE PRACTICE WITHOUT GEMS UNLESS YOUR LIKE COMBOFIEND AND HAVE A GROUP OF POSSIBLE SKILLED PLAYERS OF A LIKE MIND PEOPLE WHO GO TO TOURNIES AND MAINLY USE ONLINE WILL BE PLACED IN A SITUATION OF HAVING TO FIGHT GEM USERS .. GET REAL A NO GEM RULE AT TOURNIES WILL BE HARD ON PEOPLE WHO ARE OUT OF CERTAIN CIRCLES ...
Seth said somewhere that they're looking into first party (Microsoft/Sony/Don't know if its going to be for Wii) options. I presume this means that they're looking at making a small peripheral (one would probably come with it, purchasable separately if you buy used and it doesn't have one) or letting players use memory cards to take their gem load-outs and or collections to tournaments and other places. Sounds like an easy way to remove that tournament issue...no need to ban Gems if they go that route, as his comment suggests.
If the only remaining issue is that they might try to do paid gem packs, be they random sets or specific, I see it as a new kind of fighter/collectible game...I find that very interesting, as a Magic player. Even though who knows what they'll decide with all this uproar.
Oh no, nevermind, of course other fighting game players aren't nerds like me >.> pff...be in denial if you want fellow FGNs
F**k the gems give me more character reveals and teasers -.-
@25 LOL Knuckles will be pissed if Capcom stole his Master Emerald and put it in this game.
@13: Or that yes. And it was just an example lol. Although actually I might be wrong, but I think someone said indirectly that there might be gems with such insane increases just very hard to activate.
@12: You can choose not to select any Gems before a fight..thats not a mode or a search option to not selecting Gems..why would you on purpose give yourself a disadvantage while your opponent will almost a 100% pick Gems? lol. Thats like saying Im not gonna use my Ultra or X-factor.
They are saying those lines to confuse the young minds! Dont fall for it!
I think Gems is a cool idea, but it wouldn't be DLC or we wouldn't have to unlock them. All Gems are available from the star. Player should just
Select the character --> select 3 Gems --> play.
Just like Arcana Heart, you pick your character, then element.
@15 *facepalm* pfft... lol ok yea that was cute, i cant say the gems didnt remind me of sonic a lil
@24
And I do admit that's a problem (again, never said it wasn't)...but what if someone gets used to using, say, +5% speed on hit, +10% defense upon hitting the opponent, and +3% power on having a move blocked (just an example), and those gems aren't unlocked (again, assuming they have to be unlocked) on the console being used in a tournament. How is that any different than them having to get used to no gems at all?
Gems are going to create complications for those trying to break into the tournament scene used or not, there's no way around it. As long as the player knows how to play the game and how to play their characters it won't be impossible, just something they'll have to learn to adjust to.
The thing is gems are meant to narrow the gap netween skilled and pro...YET The casual wont know where the correct gems that they might need? It could be #69 or #420
so, with all these gems, is Dr. Robotnik going to be the final boss? Maybe Knuckles can be a hidden boss, since someone mentioned him looking for the master emerald. Come to think of it, Capcom vs Sega would be an awesome cross-over video game.
No gems! If you want customization for variation, may I suggest Stats System?
Strength(Damage output)
[1|1|1|1|1|_|_|_|_|_]
Stun Output
[1|1|1|1|1|_|_|_|_|_]
Defense(More health+Higher stun)
[1|1|1|1|1|_|_|_|_|_]
Speed (Faster Dash/Walk Speed)
[1|1|1|1|1|_|_|_|_|_]
^^^ Just an example, you can have more
Each character is BALANCED at 5 attributes each..you may take one off from one and add on to the other slot. This way, you have two different Mirror matches and have variety.
This system > Gem system. This system should have been in SFxT.
Why not use a code sort of system to select your gems?
Eg. the code afqge gets you a certain combo of gems, while the code egrtd gets you a completely different set.
I don't mean have each gem correspond to a letter, as there will be more than 26 gems, but assuming that it doesn't matter which slot the gems go into, this should provide more than enough codes to cover every combo of gems.
Thoughts?
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL CAPCOM TO MAKE THIS GAME SIMPLE! They are digging their own grave with this gem system, if we must use the gems, why not make it just a dozen gems? who is going to remember the attributes of over a hundred gems and the requirements to unlock all of them? Some of you are suggesting memory cards to save gem loadouts, ALL OF THAT JUST FOR THIS ONE GAME...SERIOUSLY!?
I'm hoping they will release a game soon after without gems, (Alpha 4 maybe) because it would be really unfair to force these gems down the throats of SF only fans, no matter how great they think it is.
@44
What do you mean "all of that just for this one game"? Its not rocket science:
Put memory card in Xbox/PS3/(Wii? I need to check this eventually)
Save loadout to memory card
Take memory card to tournament
Insert memory card
Load loadout
OMG THATS SO DIFFICULT, HAKAN WHIFF GRAB?
Also, why would anyone need to remember the attributes of every single gem? Look at any card game, its easy to play them without knowing what every card in the game does. Eventually you just come to know them by coming into contact with them.
End @44
It must be so scary that Capcom is actually asking you to put your thinking cap on to consider the deep strategies that will result from this...I see why there's so much rage now...
They're taking a fighter and adding a ccg's strategic element. They got peanut butter in my chocolate and I'm eatin' that sh*t because Reeses are damn delicious.
I really don't care at this point. The main focus should have been the combat with both universes colliding and all, but nope. Instead we have gems, fu(king worthless.
Lol @45 for the epic Reese's comment.
I say just let people whine and rant and instigate while information is given. Im more than hyped to try something to break the mold a bit.
I have to admit I don't know why people thought this was going to be some "straight up" fighter like SF4 or something. This is a cross-over game, they're famous for being over the top.
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES GAME DEVELOPERS ARE TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT!
Why not just have a "code" you can put in that loads your gems? Hit like five buttons in a certain order after you choose your character, and your gems are set. easy.
They just need to make Gems a separate mode. Look how pumped people are for Heroes and Heralds mode. It lets me have a zany dose of variety, but doesn't cram it down my throat.
Plus that's free. Paying more money for these is..."sigh".
I think the answer to choosig Gems faster in tournaments is to require blind select so the other player can't try to counter at the beguinning of the match. The person who wins has to keep the character and Gems anyway so the burden of picking a new Gem and character is on him/her.
@45 When I say all of this of one game, I'm talking about the extra hassle of setting up memory card, fight stick, button check for a match that might last 4-5 mins, where is gonna stop? next thing they will say "we have made SF5 3D now so you HAVE to wear 3D glasses or buy 3D tv to play it. It's no problem of mines anyway cause I'm not entering tournaments.
Yeah It would be easy to play and let things randomly happen but that won't guarantee you the win, that's not strategy, pros learn each card in a card game not casual players but if you had your thinking cap on you would have said they can preview what the gems are for and how to attain them while picking them.
End @45
Look I don't hate the gem system, I just think for a new system they should focus on balance for now, take baby steps with it, give us a dozen to try out, see how fans accept it and if all goes well give us the rest as a dlc or in the Super version of the game, doesn't that make sense?
The gem system doesn't bother me. In fact i cant wait to have a scrub player trying to land 3 throws in a row to activate a gem, so i can punish them all day. People are just saying wahhh i hate gems but no one stops to think that all the scrub and newbs are going to only worry about activating there gem. So if you know how to block they will get punished all day.
@54
This is not true, its always just the same people like you who whine about something new, then once you've played it, I'm 99.9% sure you'll be like "omg gemz are an amazing idea, i knew it"
#50 Different is not always good. Look at Final Fantasy XIII. Also, people thought this was going to be a straight up fighter because it's a crossover between two FIGHTING games. Comprendo? Think Capcom vs SNK 2. Two FIGHTING games, not Marvel or Tatsunoko, came together to make a crossover. Guess what, it was a straight up fighter, it was awesome, and it was probably Capcom's most quality crossover title to date.
With this crossover, they had the opportunity to make a next gen title similar to CvS2 in terms of fighting game quality, but better. But instead they turned it into what Ono himself considers to be more of a party game. It's understandable to see why there is some bitterness about what they are doing.
I know how it's going to work!
1 gem will be included with the game.
99 will be DLC.
I have full faith in Capcom's ability to make the gems balanced (though I am worried about how they'll be implemented in tournaments).
But my one complaint is how they create a colored halo effect around the character when activated. I don't need the halo to tell that my character has a gem activated (the gem bar on the bottom of the screen is enough for me). And I just find the halo to be very off-putting, aesthetically.
@65, I agree, they reeeeeaaaaally didn't need to add in the glowing body and gems flying around, lol

Bitterness is a bit of an understatement. People are basically already declaring fighting games dead...because literally one game isn't exactly what they thought it would be. At best these comments are simply immature and misinformed and at the worst they're simply ridiculous. Yes, different does not always equate to being good, and Final Fantasy is a good example of that.
However, the fact still remains that there simply isn't enough info on the gems for people to be declaring the fighting game apocalypse. This has been said several times before and it will most likely disregarded since it is easier for people to continue to assume the worst rather than toy with the idea that they may have overreacted just a tad bit. Still doesn't make it any less true.
#67 From what I've seen people are declaring THIS game dead, not Fighting games in general. Yes, that's an overreaction, but there are some on the other side of the spectrum as well. Some people are celebrating this as a great strategic move and a wonderful fighting game idea; there's not enough info to declare that either.
Honestly, what irritates me is how fiercely this is being pushed down the throats of the players. They are basically saying "NO! YOU CAN'T ENJOY THIS GAME WITHOUT GEMS! USE THEM OR F*** OFF!" Pre-gem builds were splendid, so I just don't get what is so crucial about these gems that the game is basically unplayable without them, according to Ono.
#68 And from what i've seen people aren't exactly celebrating it either, just open to the idea and willing to learn more about it before making any final judgments, which is pretty fair and sound reasoning. But what you say is true, nothing is absolute right now, the only logical thing to do is wait for details to come to light.
I'll admit I don't think I ever remember them being so adamant about having a system in a game, and it is a cause for buzz. It really all just comes back to waiting for details to come out before making any conclusions.
I hope there are tons of cards in UMarvel.
