Many people have had some unkind things to say about Capcom releasing Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 nine months after the initial title was made available. They've often questioned why the company would do this, and Seth Killian stepped up to the plate to handle some of these complaints, in a recent conversation with EuroGamer. Seth pointed out that...
"Marvel is a big company that has their own schedule of licenses with windows," Killian explained. "They have a huge impact on things like that. To have the wide range of characters we've been able to have in the game...
"We have the license for this specific game, but other companies outside of Capcom have licenses for other Marvel games that impinge. So we have to find specific times where we're able to release products. It's on the Capcom side and on the Marvel side."

I can tell you firsthand that it's a misconception that Japan is a bastion of technology. Quite far from it. Japan is WAY BEHIND the rest of the developed world when it comes to technology. Even though Japan has very good internet speeds there is a significant amount of the population that doesn't have the internet. My students who range from elementary school to junior high school are vastly behind their american counterparts in knowledge of how to use a computer or the internet. I'm talking basic things like copy and paste. A bunch don't even know what google is.
It's because Japan is run my old men and Japan is culturally resistant to change and historically has only made drastic changed when pressured or force to do it.
DLC is in that same boat.
#1 There is a reason for this. Lets face it your Xbox or PS3 is not going to last forever and with that your going to have new consoles that have backwards compatibility features that will be able to play disc based games. No one knows right now if in fact you will be able to port DLC to a new platform. The idea of DLC fighters and stages always left a sour taste in my mouth because I play most of my fighting games locally with a large group of friends and rather than haul my xbox over to there house cause they don't have the DLC all I have to bring is my disc and were ready to roll. Fighters are games that tend to last a lot longer than your average FPS which has a new iteration every year and are played more locally than they are online for the most part. Don't get me wrong fighters are played a lot online but look at allllll the major tournaments and fight clubs there are for these games all done locally and need a disc because not everyone is going to have that DLC and a good wifi connection on hand to access it.
Well its cool now, I got that they had to do it cause of timing and SF X Tekken coming out in 2012, and other Marvel projects so it makes sense I guess.
I guess I would have preffered if they waited another few months but added those 8 characters they said they were gonna add (They said 20 total if they had the time)
Which means..Gene..Megaman..etc, etc, all the fanrequests. But NOW, Im fine with it, the chars are super creative and look fun, so yes im good.
This is BS first Umvc3 comes out because of the Japan earthquake and now it's coming out because Japan doesn't like DLC?! Since when does the Japan commmunity play MvC3? marvel has always been a USA thing the Japanese have always had Street Fighter. The reason why Ulitmate is even coming out at all is because Capcom wants more money plain and simple. Instead of releasing a full complete game like MK9 did they left out a bunch of features and made the game unbalanced so people would complain and they could do this. At Least be honest and don't hide behind Lies.... But of course it doesn't matter the tools in this community will never learn how to stop getting screwed over. :/
How many times are people going to ask this question? The answer never changes.... stfu Capcom and Stfu Eurogamer at this point all we can do is deal with it.....
@#12
The complete MK 9 game that got 4 DLC characters within 4 months of release?
Yeah, I am sure you are all smart for buying these without raising an issue.
I wonder if people still think the content added is not significant enough to warrant a new edition.
It's mindbogling.
Marvel has movies coming up next year, by then capcom will not be able to release their game due to licensing problem. And a lot of people has been fed up with the sheer brokeness and unfinished feeling of MVC3. So I guess now is probably the best time to release UMVC3. Still I'd rather they hold on with UMVC3, just rebalance MVC3 and maybe make a few more DLC characters to keep this game alive until the next one comes out.
I bought MVC3 collectors edition I'm buying UMVC3 day 1 I dumped hundreds of dollars in SF2 then dumped even more in CE I love fighting games I get my money out of them I got it out of MVC3 and I will get it out of UMVC3 most games are good for like 20-25 hours so FG can be played for years I still throw in darkstalkers for PS2 I support capcom and I hope they keep pumping out fighters cuz I
Will continue buying them and enjoying them
I think downloading content in general isn't as popular in Japan due to resisting to change as comment #2 says.
Here in the US, California to be exact, a lot of CD places that I used to buy all my CDs from are all gone. Not a single one was left standing, say for one in the mall. Japan still has Tower Records, a company that were Left 4 Dead here in the US.
@9
You obviously didn't read Seth's responses. He said the Marvel license that Capcom has is only good for certain windows due to the many other companies that also have Marvel licenses, like Activision. Due to that, they would not be able to use certain characters and images at certain times, like next year, since a new Spider-man movie is coming out and new tie-in games.
This has NOTHING to do with Capcom's release cycle, but everything to do with Marvel's.
Because they know it will sell. It's really not that hard to answer.
#1 That makes some sense. You don't want to release one Marvel game in competition with another one... even though UMVC3 comes out about a month after that Spiderman game and... oh wait that doesn't make a lot of sense.
#2 DLC may not be big in Japan but it's huge everywhere else. Also consider the fact that the game's audience is in the WEST not Japan. Marvel is not a Japanese thing. It's definitely a Western experience and Capcom acknowledges this. So WTF? I assume this is is Seth indirectly saying "Capcom Japan does not believe in DLC for fighters even though we've had DLC for other games like Megaman 9 and 10."
So Japan is basically boycotting DLC?
FINALLY something about Japan I can respect besides, DBZ Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto.
DLC is a CHEAP money making scheme that makes developers lazy to get the product out on time and I wish more people would know that.
"Why include everything when we can just kick back and let people pay for the FULL game later after they already paid for the FULL game months ago...HA HA HA - Suckers have no choice HA HA HAAAA"
Typical Seth Killian dodging the real issue here.
It doesn't matter what medium the game is released on. The issue here isn't that we have to go to Gamestop to pick up a disc instead of sitting at home and downloading it via PSN/XBL.
The issue is that MvC3 came out less than a year ago and most of us here paid the full $60 for it. Now, it seems like all we got for that $60 is a beta of the full game as Capcom expects us to buy this new MvC. I know it's not a full price release, but even $40 is too much to ask of consumers that paid $60 for the same game earlier this year. Just like AE, there should be a discount if you already own MvC3.
It's just too soon, Capcom. You're not even trying to hide your milking of the fighting game community. People like to joke about Madden games coming out every year, but it hasn't even been a year yet and they're trying to put out another MvC game(and to be honest, MvC3 wasn't even that good). Personally, I'm not buying this and I hope the rest of you will be smart and not pick it up either. If you absolutely *HAVE* to own this game, PLEASE buy it used. Capcom doesn't deserve to get even more money from fighting game fans for this.
@#9
The next Spiderman game comes out next summer they could not have done that either
It's obvious that the next thing they plan to do is to do a DLC option and a game disc option. Game dis option is better in my opinion and if it comes out in the next 9 months that's fine with me, the sooner the better.
as a community organizers... i prefer disc releases
@26 (you are the man/woman/ alien life form thingy)
I agree with your statement, I am sometimes like should I or not buy the game because I know lots of people getting the game. But Im 100% sure its a no unless I get gamefly and I can play the game and send it back for cheap. From $60 in march to umvc3 $40 in november. I traded mvc3 for gears of war and got $12 at gamestop. Im always switching games I traded dues for batman, this is why I need gamefly. Forget umvc3 I want saints row 3 and run around as a naked lady or a luchador.
Have fun umvc3 dudes
There will be a super sf x tk in 2013 or maybe late 2012.
DLC is bad sales in Japan... I guess I can understand that...
Then again there's a greater amount of people in America who play Capcom's games than the ones in Japan. With that said, why not release DLC in N.America? I mean...Wasn't there a article awhile back saying that 60% of people who play SF are from America?
I know that's just SF, but you can see where I'm getting at.
If anybody believes the excuses Capcom makes Seth Killian tell us then you're nothing but sheep. The bottom line here is money. Now, the excuse is licensing issues with Marvel and other gaming companies, lmfao! So instead of waiting until Nov 15th to release the full game ( if this is the final game), they released us an alpha version of the game instead 9 months prior. Couldn't they have waited? NO! Capcom is a smart company and they know that people like me and many others will go out and pay for Ultimate in order to get the game we deserved in the first place. As for DLC in UMVC3, if we don't get any then expect another version of the game to be released in a year or so...
MVC3's number of people who actually bought the DLC were slim. This is obviously a cash crop to get you to buy said DLC characters. Don't worry guys, nine months from now we'll have Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 Apostrophe, with Doctor Octopus and Vile.
I can almost bet that this version will get played once at EVO and then an announcement for another version will come out. Capcom is not giving these games time to breathe. Megaman will be the hook for the 2012 version watch and see. I hope I am wrong but you know how capcom rolls.
@42 no you're not the only one lol. Doesn't matter, it seems like people just come on EH to "vent" more than anything else lol.
so it had nothing to do with the tsunami? wow seriously evertime someone asks this capcom is giving a different answer. capcom is such a bad liar.
Well a bit late to push back UMVC3 considering games go gold a month prior to release if not earlier. I think what really bothers people is the fact that the game IMHO is actually fun & more balanced than 2 despite the obvious "Mahvel shenanigans" with X Factor & such but it felt like MVC3 deserved better. UMVC3 feels like the product that should have came out.
So first it was the earthquake making Capcom accelerate their standard procedure for releasing fighting games.
Now it's their 'partner' for the franchise, mean ol' Mr. Marvel.
And the majority of people don't even remember that they bought a Marvel VS game less than nine months ago. All they care about is Phoenix Wright and Strider.
Japan is smart so of course a lot of money will not be wasted on DLC. They rather play the game, learn the game, and beat the game how games at one time were intended to be handled without all of the gimmicks and useless mess.
I just hate November for game releases. Oh look, here is 16 games that you "Must" buy and play. It is an old model that worked well back when we were all kids and could ask for this stuff for Christmas. Now I'm an adult, and I have to make a choice of what I want to own because finances need to go towards family and whatnot for christmas. So it looks like i'm passing on Skyrim, and any other action game for that matter. UMVC3 and KOF only this holiday.
Not surprising, Activision puts out a Spider-Man game every year even if it is terrible, like this year's game.
Also, I am getting this (got it for exactly 29.99) and Skyrim and Zelda, that's all I can afford even though I want KoF13, Batman AC, Assassin's Creed, and maybe BF3 or MW3.
ok ok so what hes saying has very valid points in licenseing and all. i do know and understand that when it comes to comic book characters. the rights are sometimes limited to three years. also we should all know that what they gathered thru us painstakingly finding combo after combo and cheapness all around. i think it was a cheap easy way to set out another product with r&d done in some major ways. balancing was generally then taking characters and taking away all there good or cheap tactics. or make it that much harder to recive the end result or nullinvoid it all. i do belive its just capcoms way of milking any game that seems to be popular. if they would just give it to us they would still have the following and even greater so. but it is what it is and unless noone buys it it wont change. and of course i have both systems pre-ordered. so noooo room really to complain just thought.
I much prefer getting a 40 dollar game over 5 dollar a dlc character. We are already instantly saving money compared to if they made every character dlc. I still don't see it as milking when they make less money for their work.
presumably uve played a capcom fighting game right when have they ever not milked a sucsefull franchise. i mean most any fighter they make has more iterations then most wanna remember. and if u didnt just get it right the first time make a true sequel then pick up from there. i understand the need to rebalance a game of course but if u have to do that with everygame ur milkin it. knowing they will bein us buy it for minimal or full price depending on what they think they can get away with.
the only ppl complaining how expensive umvc3 is are ppl that dnt have a job, still live in mommy and daddys house and namco players or developers.
who the hell are you guys telling other ppl to dont but this gam??? thats the most dumbiest thing to say. im a fighting fan and ill buy every fighting game there is.
over here in australia i bought mvc3 for $120 i didnt really get into it but i enjoyed it at a casual level. i got a few mates that dnt have the internet, but when i told them about dlc they were pretty sad, because they cnt get access to the internet in their area. i reckon the disc based version is the way to go.
@bigfellr Clearly the source of all evil is Americans and those low-down Megaman fans
Seth is full of it, they should have taken more time to make vanilla what UMvC is but they love that money. Thats why we are getting a game that should have been what we paid for 9 months ago.
I live in japan and they are not against DLC its easier to get points out here than in the states.
give it just a bit more time, before fanboys start seeing what capcom really is
Who cares, Skullgirls is what Im paying attention to. I'm buying UMvC 3 and stopping there. No SFxT or any other fighter if it isn't Marvel from Capcom. I have officially learned my lesson. Japan truly has a stubborn lot, you have to get 100 people to push just one person's decision. That's amazingly prideful and pitiful
Fighting games fans always clamor for more content. More characters, more costumes, more colors, more modes, balance tweaking, etc. and they want it yesterday. If you think that vanilla MvC3 was "rushed," that's why. Then people got the game and it wasn't what they expected, they started to yell "you should've taken more time to make it better!" 20/20 hindsight of course.
I want more content. Period. I was not dissatisfied with Vanilla MvC3; in fact I loved it and I wanted more. I would've paid for DLC characters, but I do not like the idea of DLC characters to begin with. Muh rather get all the characters on one disk, a la SSFIV (which I do not recall getting nearly this much flak. Why is that?) (or even a update like AE, but I'm pretty sure that the amount of content being added wouldn't fit MS's upload limits for DLC, so no point in doing that). I'd come out cheaper than if I'd bought them all for $5 bucks each.
I do not like that the update was released so soon (the game still had some things to be discovered), but I want those 12 characters, shifts in game mechanics, balance tweaks, etc. So it is what it is. More content, more money. Don't want the content, don't buy it
Seriously though, why does UMvC3 get more flak than SSFIV? Does 3 months really make that much of a difference? I really want to know.
@kshein: "The reason why Ulitmate is even coming out at all is because Capcom wants more money plain and simple. Instead of releasing a full complete game like MK9 did they left out a bunch of features and made the game unbalanced so people would complain and they could do this."
And how, in your conspiracy theory, did they know who would buy regular MVC3 or that it would make enough money to justify UMVC3? You really think people risk their jobs deliberately screwing up a product and hoping they will somehow still get a second run at it?
No, you don't. No one would really believe that. You're just venting because MVC3 wasn't really so great and you feel burned.
"The reason why Ulitmate is even coming out at all is because Capcom wants more money plain and simple."
Capcom doesn't release *any* game except to make money. That is how business works. Otherwise, the games would be free. Few companies release free games.
@67 just because you didnt hear about it didnt mean it didnt happen. Capcom was getting crap for milking the customers for costumes in SSF4 (which they did) and the sales of AE reflected that they were losing a lot of customers with this annual "new releases" The thing with MvC3 is its 9 MONTHS old, you could have hooked up with a chick day one of MvC3 and you baby would be born around the same time as Umvc3.
I want new characters too but the features in this game should have been in vanilla, it was rushed and broken and dont forget that since they didnt have time to finish they SOLD jill and shuma.
without DLC you will end up paying a little of 100 USD for a game that hasnt been out a whole year and that doesnt seem right to me
Lol so the tsunami & earthquake didn't affect them. Thanks Seth , first truthful thing you've said in awhile.
Was SF4 the demo for SSF4? Yes.
Was World Warrior a demo for ST? No. Capcom had no idea what the feck they had and there was no establishment for that kind of thing unlike today.
3rd Strike was the apology for how utterly bad NG and 2I were.
@64
I think UMvC3 is getting so much flack over ssf4 because a few reasons;
-MvC3 feels so incomplete in modes, and balance
-modes offered in vanilla and Ultimate still seem very barebones
-the online is disgusting and doesn't really seem like they improved it besides the UI
The other problem is that UMvC3 feels really rushed and incomplete as well, even Capcom said that this version was rushed and they didn't have time for more characters/modes due to deadlines. So, the first game was rushed and the game released 9 months later seems to be rushed.
SSf4 offered new modes and online features to their already superior set as well.
@68
Weren't the sales figures for AE a little skewed because it doesn't account for the DLC sales? I could be wrong about that, but could've sworn I heard that.
Also, what modes did SFIV have that MvC3 didn't. Survival mode? I really feel that the online thing that MvC3 should've had in vanilla that ultimate is getting is spectator mode (and I don't even care about that). if the one thing was there I don't think people would've been nearly has upset, and it's not even a major thing.
It may just be me, but I don't see what the difference is. People rejoiced when Super was announced, but called foul with UMvC3. The main sticking point seems to be the time frame, and I agree, the game should've had more time to breathe. But I'm not going to say that another iteration of Marvel is "milking" when I don't say another iteration of any version of SF is milking. I want more content.
When you obtian a license for a charcter in a game, it's not forever. Let's take Spiderman for example. They had a hard time getting him in the game but he made it. Now combine this with Japans stubborness wih DLC and the restrictions and you got a big issue, why?
The license they have is probably for a good year or two, by waiting past that they would have to bid for licenses on the characters all over again but since there is a waiting period, making a new MvC3 disc would be impossible because characters like Spiderman or Doom may not be available. So this was probably the only window of opportunity they had and thats why we get a new disc after 9 months.
Having said that, if they went the DLC and patching route, they woould only have to worry about licensing DLC characters and content which is easier and cost effective, this was a buisness decision to preserve the license longer.
Now with UMvC3 here it's possible, so I don't think we will see a NEW UMvC3 after this because it would cost too much money.
Why couldnt they just do what they did with AE and release a DLC option and a Disc option so them nips could just buy the disc if they hate DLC so much
