Last month an interview was put up with female community member DMG|BurnYourBra discussing some of the encounters she's had at tournaments, but a follow up piece was recently posted by Jason24cf on DMG's website talking about the response she received, along with a few other things. Here's an excerpt.
Jason24cf: Since our last interview where you discussed the issues with the FGC what feedback have you received.
BurnYourBra: I received a lot of messages thanking me for speaking about it. Some people were angry, some were upset, and some were surprised. I also received a lot of messages from females sharing somewhat the same experience and I also received messages of people who thought I was putting down the community.
Jason24cf: So you have had people write you and they expressed anger with you as well as saying you put the community down? Would you mind sharing what they said?
BurnYourBra: Some of the messages were just simple “thank you for shining light on the subject.” Some were “you need to have thick skin in the community” in which I replied. “Well, how about you bring your mother, your daughter, your wife, or your girlfriend to a tournament, have someone call them a bitch or whatever derogatory word and you pat them on the back and tell them to have thick skin.” I have thick skin. That wasn’t my issue. It was just disrespect. And again, it’s not like this happens at every tournament I attend. So I think some people read the interview wrong and some people just don’t care, which is fine, I made my point. That’s all.
That's crazy. Her point of mother's being in the room is the same one I made to the trolls of SRK, most of whom were being just as derogatory in the comments as she mentioned they were in tournaments.
Being a dick with a clever comment is being a loudmouth fan. It sucks but it's fine. What she mentions is people that aren't clever saying offensive and obvious bullhonk that has no subtly and would be thought too far even by grade school standards.
Amazingly, people call out Eventhubs comments for being immature but I've gotten nothing but support for new ideas and criticism here. Yet, SRK is called the superior site by fighting game elite and, in my experience, the elitist buttholes of SRK forums are the absolute basement of intelligence in the fighting game community with constant trolling of 'do your work,''deal with it' and 'you joined after 2008 what do you know?'
Her point is clear, if you can't be an adult for your own sake, do so for the rest of us so we don't feel embarrassed to be in the same room as you.
lol sounds like someone is salty towards SRK @2.....lol srk has put in the work and time into the fighting game community and thats why it will always be considered the "superior site". i agree with her premise but she has to realize that a**holes will be a**holes and theres nothing she can do about it. want to complain...complain to the tourney organizers
What he means is how usually just about all the comments become big time troll bait and they will use you are the 09er line which is already stupid within itself to use. I'm on both site they both have good & bad funny thing is the comment on SRK have gotten 10x worse than they have over here mostly because we are either used to it or people tend not to really troll as much SRK on the other hand they fall for troll bait a lot quicker which is quite hilarious to watch. That's not to say we have them here like a certain person who continues to hate on 3s without actual information aside from the whole Yun & Chun are broken.
As for the article you can't change everything about the FGC but you can make steps to improve on it and try to tone down and have that line between what's trash talking and down right just disrespectful example like the NBA and how they are cracking down on derogatory comments to homosexuals.
mistakes meant sites*
and "That's not to say we don't have them here"
@2
I concur sir. Well out.
@4
Phuk you and that maggot filled crotch you came out of. a$$holes are a$$holes but that doesn't mean she has to take it. By saying what you are saying you are condemning her and her right to speak up about it. And by just brushing it off you make it OK for people to say whatever in what's supposed to be a friendly environment. So please whoever or whatever you are do is us all a favor and don't breed.
@7 No need to take it that far sir you basically made yourself sound like the guys BYB is speaking about just say your point and move on no need to insult.
@7 ur stupid bro...just stupid lol.....when or what did i say to condemn her?? i guess u didnt see the part when i said i agree with her or did u just miss that lol?? think b4 u speak dummy. letting unnecessary statements fly outta ur mouth is one of the reasons why this site gets clowned on...
@9...she is complaining...the fact that she is being interviewed/asked is a direct result of her complaints. if it wasn't a problem then she wouldn't have been asked about it.
The same guys who asked BurnYourBra to have thicker skin are the same people who calls their female peers / friends a bitch on a regular basis. I'm a guy and calling a female a bitch (even if it's your best friend) is plain disrespectful. I can joke around and call my friend a dick, cheapass, jackass, etc but a bitch or a c**t (you guys can feel in the letters) has no good intentions or purpose behind it other than degrading other females. Will it be okay if I told my black opponent to go back to the cotton fields after I raped him in Marvel or SSFIV? HELL NO! The concept applies to calling a female a bitch.
To me it's of no surprise. Burn is a strong OPINIONATED woman, in a male dominated competitive testosterone filled environment. It's like water and oil, it's not going to mix at all.
I see what she means completely since I witnessed situations like this myself but things like this happen to everyone.
There are also things guys get singled out on that girls don't so aside from gaming guys also deal with it though it may not be to the same extent.
Also SRK has more people that know what they are talking about on their site compared to here. A ton of posts on this site end up with "omg it OP itz impossible to beat BAN IT!!11" which isn't to say that doesn't happen on SRK but you'll definitely find more helpful info there.
mrdrofficer is also a know troll/moron on SRK since his posts always antagonize or consist of attempting to force his opinion on others.
But... Burnyourbra, you are disrespectful as well.
You belittle people you play with just because you want to believe you are better than them, to brag and trash talk is also part of you, so don't come off with that kind of stuff if you are one and the same with that complaints. In fact, you use sexism against them in a 'reverse' way. I read the previous interview and I have 'seen you in action'.
There is truth in your comments, but there is cynicism as well.
I'm a woman too, I do understand how the whole thing is against "girl gamers" and how the situation ensues around it.
There is nothing to prove.
Burnyourbra is a player that is a woman, yes; but gender in video games doesn't matter. While it is good to point out what adversity a woman faces in a male dominated industry, Burnyourbra does the opposite and attempt to exploit her gender as a means to gain ground, belittle the opponent, etc.
Often for those that disagree with her or play against her, if she does happen to win, I've seen her derogatory statements and remarks; especially if she doesn't like you or your playstyle.
"Burnyourbra" in itself is a bit standoffish. Since Burning your bra is normally part of a feminist movement (Look it up).
Not to mention, before she was known, she was with something called "FightNationEX" which is a little small group that mainly promotes on youtube with players "Dayasha" "Shine" and others.
After the tournament DMG picked her up and she left FNEX, which shows she is after fame and doesn't value where she does come from.
Not to mention that, but she also entered the regular Super Street Fighter IV tournament and didn't place. Regardless of gender, being male or female, it doesn't matter. She would not be a part of DMG or received an invitation to do so had she not been female, which is sexism reversed. While she may have skills of a normal to a bit above average player; any regular tournament goer may give her trouble. But, because she is "female" she is seen differently, and thus, she uses this to her advantage.
I wish people would have more respect for one another, no mateer what race or gender you are. I love girl gamers, because it's not easy finding a girl who loves video games just as much as a guy does. I can also understand why guys get angry when they lose to a girl, but I admire the dedication that some girls put into gaming.
As far as trash-talking goes, there is a line that you shouldn't. It's one thing to get into the opponent's head then there's another thing when you personally attack someone. I'm glad she wasn't afraid to speak on how she felt about the situation.
#21 hit it right on the nail
""Burnyourbra" in itself is a bit standoffish. Since Burning your bra is normally part of a feminist movement (Look it up)."
The fighting game community is a fraternity, with a hazing phase that could be eternal. You have to place at tournies, to get respect in the scene. You have to earn the respect of your peers.
How are you going to walk up to a top player and ask for games when you're a nobody? or haven't been acquainted with that person? anyone would of shrugged her off.
And ofcourse alioune is going to get more help at tournaments, shes visually pleasing to look at, and some males such as myself would take any opportunity to try to charm/conquer her. That's life though, try not to become jaded out of it.
The thing about respect is that it must be earned. Im not talking about kissing behinds, but she must put the work in learning these games. No guy will ever take her serious if she does'nt put the effort in it. Im not saying she ain't good but she needs to push herself harder.
Although im a guy I can tell you that any strong woman will tell you that a woman has to be twice as strong as the next man to survive, they can't expect a hand out because this is a mans world. BYB has to be twice as tough and twice as deadly as any man she will ever face. This is the burden she carries, women have to do it at work, they have to do it at school they have to do it in public, the fighting game scene is no different. I know it does'nt seem fair but if she wants that respect she has to work really hard for it. You can't half a.. it.
She's gotta be able to back up what she says every time she is challanged or is challanging someone. Only then can she earn that respect and climb to that next level. When she realizes this, the only step left for her is to act and no one can force her to do it but herself.
Finally once she achieves this level of respect any stupid igonrant sexist thing a guy says will mean nothing because at the end of the day she will have the confidence and skill to prove them wrong any time of the day. She can do it but she has to start now.
@#27:
wow, you sound like you're trying to not to be offensive but your comment, correct me if I'm wrong, basically implies that since this is a "man's world," females HAVE NO RESPECT to begin with and that in order to have any ounce of respect from their male peers, they need to be at par or above with the rest of the men on this planet. Jesus christ, I'm a dude and I find that offensive. It's like saying males in a female dominated world, such as nursing and grade school teaching, have to earn respect from their female coworkers in order to be taken seriously. Next time, read it to yourself (or better yet, to another female) before you post b/c you sound like an arrogant fool.
To me, respect is automatically giving. I don't care you are gay, transexual, bisexual, a female, an overweight person, Jewish, black, etc. You'll have my respect the second I meet you. From there, it's your responsibilty to keep it. If you lose respect towards me, well, my respect towards to you is gone also. It's that simple. That's how I look at it. The whole "respect is earned, not a handout" idea basically implies to what #27 said about women and respect in this world. It doesn't work for me.
The random people you meet everyday (store clerks, new clients, new coworkers, etc). Do you call them a dick, a-hole, moron, dumbf**k,etc when you first meet them? Hell no! You know why? It's because you have respect for these people. If you say "respect is earned," then that means no one has your respect to begin with, therefore, you can talk down to them, spread rumors about them, etc until they earned your respect. Think about it. The whole "respect is earned" doesn't make sense.
This isn't a cogent response to any of the valid points i or others made, But i wasn't honestly expecting one, If a response at all.
Funny how she can go on a massive spiel like her first interview was many many paragraphs long, But when she gets a massive response and massive criticism back.
Maybe I'm wrong, But this idea that you shouldn't even give scrutiny to what she's saying is completely illogical ridiculous and reprehensible.
She is not beyond reproach.
“Well, how about you bring your mother, your daughter, your wife, or your girlfriend to a tournament, have someone call them a bitch or whatever derogatory word and you pat them on the back and tell them to have thick skin.”
Well of course you wouldn't do that, But what could you do? Bash them up good and proper? That shows a complete lack of maturity and a complete disregard for the law.
#25 Alioune is a guy. Also someone said "who would bring there mother, wife, girlfriend to an event" This happens all the time man. CJ Truth the 13 player from FL travels with his parents to every event as he is a minor. While I was at NECXI and Winter Brawl there was a gentleman a little older then me like 35 with his wife there. Now yes he boobs where all over the place but once one person stepped over the line he handled the issue quickly. Same goes for girlfriends, many players there have there girlfriends at events.
The point of this all is that we are all adults. Some not as mature as others but adults nonetheless, we should carry ourselves with respect. It’s that simple. There is nothing wrong with trash talk but when it goes to race and to derogatory statements then it’s more of a hate attack then trash talk. We may have our suspicions of Ricky Ortiz but would someone flat-out call him "you know what" to his face? No they wouldn’t, because it’s a manner of respect and we should have it regardless the level of play from the other player.
@21. Rok, I like how you post the same old crap all over the net.
I've played you. I've beaten you and instead of good games you go around spreading lies about me and you continue to do so . . .
I don't want to get into the Fnex thing again because you've been told plenty of times what happened. You can ask them but I don't expect them to answer you because you troll them too.
Yes, "burn your bra" was and is a feminist statement. However it's also an old email address that I had and I used to register online.
And yes, people do bring their girlfriends, their children, even their parents to tournaments. You would know if you attended one.
Look, I was asked the question and I answered. I'm not asking for sympathy from anyone; male or female.
@BYB - you don't have to answer to anyone anymore because as many people have pointed out thus far, this isn't really a debatable topic.
As RandomJohn and Sasuga have also pointed out, respect should be automatic and then lost if such an action warrants it. The only people allowed to be uncivil, if they choose, is two opponents and even then, I've never not shook the hands of my opponent in a tournament setting, never.
So what's the guy on the streams excuse? Why does he get to publicly ridicule from a distance? And I'm talking anyone.
I know this is a long post, on top of my already long post, but this topic I feel is a dividing issue to the FGC and I feel it is the main factor holding us back as players. There is a lot of negativity associated with FG fans and we need to change that so we can evolve as a genre and as a sport, whether you like that idea or not.
I have a call to all streams, Spooky, OFF, Level Up, IPW, etc - if someone says something blatant, and I mean CLEARLY, hate speech in any form, pull'em off the stream immediately. Trash talk is another story, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know when someone's crossed the line. If you feel embarrassed when they say it, that's the line being crossed. This would send a clear message to the community that this is no longer tolerated. We'll get more views, more respect from outsiders and an ever evolving group of players.
Fighting games are already some of the best games for older players, most of our scene is in their 30's, so why are we the only ones being held back by immaturity. I want to grow up.
its crazy some people here are acting like byb should just accept the nasty insults directed at her at these events. spainardsrk even posted twice, and he clearly ignored the main issue stressed by byb. she's already said she doesnt want hand outs, reread the 1st interview again.
have people say some of those things about you, you would be upset and angry too. its nasty and unnecessary, no one should have to put up with it. if dmg have given her the platform to speak about it, more power to them
@28 I want to agree with you but your not being realistic about the issue. You think thats the way the world works? Maybe in a perfect world but it does'nt.
Yes, people always have MY respect when I first meet them unless they give me reason otherwise. You ever read those news reports of the young high school girl that kills herself because she was'nt popular and pretty? Ever asked yourself why a girl would drive themself to this? Well because in this world people are taught to respect the rich, the powerful, and the beautiful and that everyone else is dirt. At least thats the bottom line.
Now I agree, people should respect everyone at least when they first meet them. But when people are slandering your name, calling you names, picking other people and sometimes more attractive female gamers to help and train over a average looking female gamer, you have to ask the question, why?
Now im not saying she should just bend over and take it when someone or anyone disprects them just to earn it. What I was suggesting is that to earn that respect she has to ignore what people are trying to say and work to become as good as she can in her games of choice so that when she walks in a room she's not asking for help she is being asked for help. That's the power or real respect and she can turn the tables and pick and choose who she wants to help. I hope you understand.
#21 your wrong kid. ive known burn for a long time now and i was among the first to join dmg. she was not invited to dmg because she was a female what so ever. she was invited because she showed skill. she went against the best of the group and held her own and thats how she got in. it had nothing to do with her being female. and yeah she talks alot of trash when she wins but she doesnt go callin people out of their names. peole talk trash to her also without calling her Bi*ches and all that and thats ok. she gets called those names at tourneys because she is female and thats whats makes it wrong. her talkin trash to others after a win is a normal thing that damn near EVERYONE does so you guys dont try to use that crap against her.
Like I said last time this lady's okay in my book.
