The outstanding folks at Shadowloo.com put up a new video from Sol T showing some snazzy SSF4 combos being performed on the Hitbox, a.k.a. stickless controller.
Is performing 360/720s any easier on this than a keyboard? Having used keyboards and sticks extensively, I still prefer a keyboard until random select gives me Zangief (Guile and Vega's ultras can be tricky too).
the hit box shouldnt be hard to pick up for anyone, all it really take is mental preparation. Thing is with showcasing these combos is more focused on the attack buttons and less on movement, so the lack of joystick isnt part of the equation for the most part. The main thing to get used to with the hitbox is the placement and use of the jump button, while its effective when you get used to it, seems to be the main obstacle.
And none of the combos have him bothering with it, If he were to do seth air stomps instead of the ultra 2 i would have been impressed to be able to pick up doing that within 7 minutes consistently. Doing ibuki or C. Viper jump canceling, cammy ex cannon strike combos would be a better showing of mastery of a new layout.
TLDR: All them more difficult links he was doing doesnt involve the actual stick replacement, so i find it quite misleading cause the 6 button layout didnt change.
@#6
depends on what layout you used for keyboard, ive known the controller deprived folks on ggpo tend to do use the wasd or the arrow keys....which with that layout it takes way too much effort to do 360/720 motions.
Im a Hugo user and i had to adopt a side layout if i was stuck on keyboard at the time. Used asd,f or space bar(similar feel to the hitbox) as jump so it is much more comfortable drumming the motion out. Such as to do a 720 was just drumming out asfasd+2 punch buttons and in which the hitbox is nearly the same way for drumming out them motions so i say it is easier with that in mind.
Still takes away from the "arcade feel" of a stick controller.
On a side note, Im curious to see how hitbox users, keyboard users, and even pad controller users are going to adjust to SSF: AE when it drops as pretty much anyone who uses a stick is going to be leaps ahead of them in practice due to the arcade release.
@16 yeah not my cup of tea mate. Each to there own tho. And yeah it looks odd I agree but I think it'll be pretty fun to use.
The main advantage of Hitbox is PRECISION.
If misexecution is your main obsticle, Hitbox will solve this once and for all.
Which was my problem, example: I want a Neutral Jump, but misexecuted as Jump Back/Forward;
Same reason as why players prefer stick than pad. Precision is far more difficult in Pad than Stick
The second advantage of Hitbox is EXECUTION SPEED
Players prefer stick than pad because it is difficult to control four buttons with one thumb. No way your thumb can press buttons on pad faster than fingers press buttons on panel.
Same reason applied. Stick takes more time to travel from one direction to another than finger right above the buttons.
Try do a simple experiment: Half-Circle-Forward motion ten times. Compare it with the same on keyboard by pressing A > A+S > S > S+D > D ten times.
Conclusion of the Experiment:
1. Using ASD is faster to execute.
2. It is harder to execute wtih ASD.
3. The difficulty execution on keyboard can be overcame with practise.
I play fighting games on keyboard for around 10 years now, and seriously the hardest part on keyboard is:
1. 360 and 720. With SF4 Engine, 360 is not a problem, but for 720 it require some tricks to abuse the easy input system of SF4 and the advantage of Keyboard for pressing more than One direction at once. I cant do 720, but many of my friends can, it just that you must find some special way to buffer it (jump, whiff normal)
2. 225 degree move (like Hooligan Combination, Chicken Wing). Its not hard to pull off (since the 360 can be input exactly like this move). However, to use it in a combo take some practice. I have tried to practice Fei long FK FADC into Chicken Wing, but most of the time I missed or the move come out too late.
3. Tiger knee motion: This also require alot of practice due to the WASD setup. It took my around 1.5 months to do Cammy TK CS fluently.
However, keyboard still have some advantages:
1. QCF/QCB -> really really fast.
2. Charge move: Easy to do, easy to learn, automatic buffering since it can press 2 direction at once
3. HCF/HCB: this move is quite easy in keyboard for SF4. However, in some games before require a individual Down direction, it can be a pain since its easy to miss it when doing HCF/HCB in Keyboard. In SF4 its fast and easy.
4. Cheap. A cheap Taiwan keyboard at a price of $5 can be used, where as with sticks it gonna cost quite alot.
Nice. Wouldn't mind trying out a hitbox myself.
