Capcom's Christian Svensson hit the Unity Boards to talk quite a bit about how the PlayStation Networking being down his impacted their business, also clarifying how it may affect the upcoming release of Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition.
How do you feel about the people hacking the PlayStation Network?
Svensson: I'm frustrated and upset by it for a number of reasons.
As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can't do... and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation store and that I can't do right now.
On a related note, as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.
In short, the hackers appear to be trying to "punish" Sony for some perceived injustice, and they've been effective in that I suppose. But they're also punishing millions of other consumers and businesses which makes it impossible to be sympathetic to their "cause".
What's worse, the PSN hacking or all of the leaked information about your games?
Svensson: They are both highly detrimental to our business. Hard to say which causes more financial impact, but both hurt.
Will the download option for Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition be affected by outages such as what's happening with the PSN?
If you download it before the servers go down then, yes, you can play Arcade Edition, but just the offline things. — Evil Ryu.
Svensson: [What Evil Ryu said] is correct.
How come EuroGamer listed Street Fighter X Tekken for the PC?
Svensson: EuroGamer posted it because it was in the FAQ we distributed to editors at Captivate. As stated above, the FAQ, for now, was erroneous unfortunately. At some point I hope to make it correct by having a PC SKU, but that's not yet a done deal.
I always love how corporate spins things that because they got hurt we are the ones who are hurt. Yet when they hike prices or give bad services its just part of business. Im glad they hacked it. Keeps these dudes honest from time to time and not so quick to say no one can hurt them. HACKERS UNITE.
360 didn't give a crap about those who are hacking, ps3 is trying to sue which only stirred up trouble for them. Just be like 360 and ban those who hack & play online end of story... no need to try to gain more money. If that's the case just charge user for PSN and make sure to up the security and upgrade the connection because my god does PSN blows compare to 360..
#2: Dude, there's not a single person who is benefiting from this.
Large companies aren't benefiting because they lose profits necessary to, you know, keep a business running. When they have less money, either people lose their jobs (which I'm still seeing too much of these days), or they have to compensate by hiking prices or providing worse service.
Small independent companies aren't benefiting, especially if they were planning on releasing a game during this time. It's difficult and resource consuming getting a release date squared away, and so the little guys are losing out.
Players aren't benefiting because, well, that's obvious.
And even the glorious hackers won't benefit long-term, because I'm pretty sure the general attitude has shifted against them, not to mention the legal pile they'll be in should they ever be found out.
Any point that was trying to be made has been made long ago. At this point, further aggression doesn't help anyone.
how long has it been? is psn and soe still off line??? This is gonna cost them all kinds of money not to mention there reputation is gonna be hit hard. I would imagine that e3 is gonna have to be used more for dmg control instead of promoteing games for them.
Leave your console fanboyism out of this PSN being out is very bad for all hackers only made things worse for consumers. 360 PS3 etc are not immune I mean this gen has bricked consoles and network outages, in other words both major companies and hackers have screwed us stop defending either or.
Oh boo hoo.
Poor Capcom...not able to milk their customers dry by charging for character outfits that are not only already on the disc, but other games like MK9 give away for free.
Sorry, I feel no sympathy for you. How's development on allowing people to spectate matches in a MvC3 lobby coming along? What's that? You can't make any money off of that so it's on the backburner? Oh, okay...nvm
@10
No , they already announced over a stream they plan on having us purchase an Updated Disc.
Capcom employees are bums , so this news isn't shocking.
Its expected now , which is sad.
@10
Wow you don't know crap do you?
MK9 was hacked not even a good 2 weeks ago & guess whats on the disc Skarlet, Shao Khan, Goro & Kintaro. This ain't the 90's nothing is free in games any more unless it comes in a SE version of a game like Jill & Shuma.
Skarlet
http://www.hadoken.net/?p=3247
Shao Khan, Goro, Kintaro
http://www.hadoken.net/?p=3232
So guess what unless you know how to hack a disk & unlock them for free your going to end up most likely paying to do it.
@JrockEclipse
The PSN isn't that bad, its works for me and I'm quite happy to stay with the PSN free service thank you.
Look guys I don't mean to troll anyone but I probably would use X-LIVE but as I own one of the old consoles (an elite) I don't want to pay another £40 for mircosoft's wireless adaptor on top of £40 for a years worth of online gaming. Again I'm not meaning to stir up anything but a built in wireless should have been there from the start on the X-Box instead of Mircosoft being a bunch money grabbing bastards, hell even the Wii had wireless built in when it came out, in this day in age it should have been there (like spec mode for MvC3) from day one.
So yea should god strike down my X-Box with another RROD I may consider when I buy an 360 silm to try it, but until then I'd like to stay on free service however bad it maybe.
But yea I guess that would be the better option as JrockEclipse said "ban those who hack & play online" would be a quick and painless solution instead of trying to squeeze money out of them, thats just like kicking a nest of hornets.
and one last thing I'm sure we can all agree on (expect maybe mdef7611 although if he's an X-Box guy and if X-LIVE goes down again to them I'm sure he'll come round to this way of thinking).
F*** THE HACKERS!
Patience is the key to unlocking the force...
Calm down guys.. it will be over soon..
@14
Of course bosses can be played by modding, they're meant to be in the game, Goro is even playable in the Challenge Tower, and the other two also need usable movesets for obvious reasons (game testing, challenges that didn't make the final cut). That doesn't mean they were meant to be actual playable characters via paid DLC later on.
About Skarlet, have you even watched her videos? The damn character isn't even 30% completed, she has no special moves, her animations are all messed up and her normals are from other characters. It's ten times worse than MvC3 Jill.
I guess people are now gonna bitch about the challenge tower zombies and Stuntman being unplayable but in the disc too. Get some common sense please.
Oh yeah, and screw the hackers.
I bought a 20 dollar PSN card on 4/20/11 and i can't use it
cuz of that a$$hole Gorge hotz who is in south America now.
Yup, with this network outage the hackers have not just victimized Sony, I bet lots of game publishers are feeling the effects. In the end it's us, the consumers, who are negatively impacted, because when companies don't make the money they aimed on making, prizes tend to go up, or people are getting fired.
Yeah, so you showed Sony. Thanks a lot!
@Ihira and @Emeraldfront
You do realise you have an account for a website that is aimed at Capcom games, right? They lose money, we might not see games we wanted to see.
Reports today say, Sony hopes to have PSN fully functional by May 31.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05...
Thats awfully close to SSF4 AE release. And who knows if Capcom requires a certain amount of up-time in order to deliver the product to the Playstation Store or not.
From what I heard earlier, Playstation Store will be the last service brought back online. They are most focused on bringing up online play, friends list, and Qriocity first. Home and PSN Store in the final stages.
This blows.
so hopefully its up before my bday june sixth man this blows i have both the ps3 and the box and i used to not care about my ps3 but man i like mvc3 better on ps3 and its really killin that the mk i bought has no real use as of now its pretty bad sony what are u gunna do
(Are people really supporting hackers? I hope you guys are trolling/salty, not gonna say anything because I don't wanna get banned - but karma comes back around folks. Don't be jerks.)
I have PS3 and my brother have an Xbox, the only thing I find that Xbox Live is better, is that it have more content. Fanboys acting as if it is way better connection ect... need to stop it, is the same sh!t. If you think paying for online makes more secured, well... not exactly you see NO*effing*BODY is safe from hacking, even the Pentagon have been hack.
Everyone who hates hackers has to think their attitude over. To make it more interesting.. Hackers are people who know the match up perfectly and they EXPOSE your openings and own you at a tournament.
Hacking first started to improve security. And also there's a hacking E3, or something. They share things with the companies (Well, okay not every hacker is liek uhm that friendly). But there's always a contest who can hack the newest software and hardware the fastest. Winner gets big prizes sometimes.
ON TOPIC:
In case of Sony. The hackers didn't attack the PSN nor did they take it down. They just realized that they can play with their banned PS3's online again on the developers network. They took a closer look and noticed that they could hack the admin accounts of the PSN, and they noticed that they can download games for free on those accounts. Even games that aren't released yet.
-
Sony's reaction just was to take down EVERYTHING in order to recode things.
So don't blame the hackers for seeing the gap, blame Sony for making such a "huge" gap.
PS:
Also 31 May is way too long. Fuçk!ig chumps.
There is no cause for symapathy in blantant and maliscious attempts to aqquire anothers personal/financial information for their own nefarious use. It would be one thing to prove a point by hacking the network to thumb Sony's eye. However, they delved into larceny the moment they did so and made away with thousands of personal users profiles and financial data.
I believe post #4 best said everything I feel, at the moment.
It's your own fault for giving away important personal data.
Like using the same Email for PSN and for PayPal.
Using credit card to buy on PSN.
That's your own fault.
It's so obvious that those data are not safe on the PS3 nor on the XBox360 nor on your PC. If someone wants them, he'll get them.
Yes! is our own fault, in the same way while walking on the street we could get rob, but is our own fault that we just happen to have all of our credit cards on the wallet.
@R4HU1
Possibly as late as May 31st.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05...
ANyone know anything about dc characters or costumes for mvc3 or is capcom done?
@Strider_RagnaroK #37
Well, it isn't your fault getting robbed. But it's your fault walking through certain areas from NY C at 3AM with an Iphone in your hand.
As long as you can protect you from stuff do it.
@7
LOL, don't blame the hackers? that makes no sense, even if sony had a faulty security system
that's like saying someone who leaves their door unlocked at night DESERVES to be robbed. don't blame the robber, blame the victim lmfao what kind of mentality is that
@Ado #45
No. Uhm it's like have a neon sight in at your house saying: "Backdoor is open." And go to bed sleeping.
Some of you guys just amaze me, especially the guy bashing CAPCOM for on disc DLC then in the same sentence praising MK9. Let's just ignore what others have pointed out, and also ignore the 7 on disc promotional DLC costumes for Kitana, Jade, Mileena, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Ermac and Reptile. Let's ignore the MK2 costumes for Smoke, Noob and Reptile as well, not to mention the hacked in MK3 costumes for Sektor and Cyrax that are on the disc. There's also the base male DLC model announced as Fujin, there is PLENTY on that game disc that Boon is going to milk for, so get a fu-king clue.
I hope they don't postpone the Xbox 360 AE download. They might do so that way the PS3 version and the Xbox version are released at the same time. Here's to hoping they dont..
I don't mind waiting....its not like I have a choice...im not "bro" enough to be on XBL. hmmm then again how hard can it be to say bro every other word?
Sony was actually running the most up to date software if im not mistaken-they just got hacked man. Sony didn't mess up, They got Messed up. Point blank end of story
People are actually siding with the hackers? Man, just when I thought people on the internet couldn't get any dumber.
Sony isn't completely innocent either (possibly negligent), but don't act like hacking is some kind of noble, justified crime. Please. Let's all go and shoplift from Walmart because they're oh so big, bad, and evil. Two wrongs don't make a right.
Instead of utilizing their l33t hacking skills on something much more productive in society (such as an NSA cryptologist), these colossal losers of epic proportions decide to f*ck with other people's lives and derive pleasure out of chaos and disruption. In their deluded minds, these hackers conduct their nerdgasms to address whatever ill-perceived sense of injustice they feel they must clash against. Whatever. Hackers have no lives, no friends, are doomed to being virgins forever, and will likely die alone. They hack computer systems and online services out of spite and lingering resentment to the society that has ostracized them due to their self-imposed loserdom. To suggest that hackers have other reasons to execute data breaches is daft. Even bigger fail to the like-minded social failures and outcasts who worship these phags.
i was fine with the outage at first, but now its come to way beyond ridiculous. on top of that, sony is giving us due dates which they keep breaking. i wouldnt trust them with my life at this point.
they are giving us 30 days free psn+ and muic downloads. but i feel like the more they make us wait, they more they should give us as being loyal customers.
I just read, watch videos, and game on my PC. :)
This is why you need to have a PC that can game, you wouldn't be left out in the cold. lol I also have a Nintendo DS to keep me busy.... xD
Any system is to assume users will attempt to abuse it, designing any system without this thought is "insecure." There will always be software and hackers, it's just a race to see who gets where first.
I don't see how this has hit the video game companies, besides Sony. People who were going to purchase your products will still buy your dlc and games. It may delay that purchase but I'm sure the overwhelming majority who intended to buy it will do so.
@62
There are many ways that it would affect video game publishers. Here's one, Capcom makes revenue projections based on how they expect their upcoming releases will do. Capcom does release titles and DLC on the PSN Network and with these setbacks the release date is pushed back. That messes with their revenue projections. This will make Capcom potentially have a worse fiscal quarter than expected which hurts their stock. That makes them lose money. Another thing is that publishers allocate resources for projects based on revenue projections. Without the revenue from a timely release of their titles, they don't actually have the money to fund their future projects. This also loses them money because everything has to be pushed back.
A. Don't defend people who hacked PSN it's not defensible it's like defending someone stealing someone's bike.
B. Considering that most of these arguments and sentiments seem to be blinded by fanboyism, and disregard that though they are large corporations they still NEED to make money to continue projects. Hackers suck, PSN sucks, 360's suck, grandmas play Wii that sucks, and this comments section sucks. Stay free.
finally, someone else who realizes that it's the hackers we should be mad at. sony shouldn't have let this happen, so they f*cked up, but it still wouldn't have happened if NO ONE HACKED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
@kidvid
Is it Sony's fault for not taking necessary precautions to protect against hacking? It is absolutely their fault, especially given the nature of the data that their servers were holding. That doesn't mean the hackers are not the primary culprits in this. This doesn't happen if they don't decide to exploit Sony's security issues and hack their network for whatever reason. Both are at fault, but most of the blame should be put on the hackers.
For the fanboy crap, you guys have to understand that this could have happened to Xbox Live as well, it just didn't in this case due to the motivations the hackers had. Just because you're paying 15 a month doesn't mean that Microsoft is doing their utmost to protect your information. As a matter of fact, given Microsoft's history with hackers I would say that isn't the case.
Lol it's Sony's fault for making a developer network that is so easy to get inside.
Even I could do it, there was a manual out there. And I don't even know anything about computer n sh!t. Well, I know certain things, but it's not enough to hack things.
I don't see the problem with virtua data. It get's stolen, watever no probs... It's just a god damn number inside a god damn HD...... It's not a real thing like a bike or something.
Actually we're anyway too many humans on this planet. So why don't those Ami-Fags "Fcuk off" and stop doing silly wars about oil. Stop expanding and take care of your own sh!t instead of stealing other countries rescources.
The same Ami-Fags complain about hackers. Hacking things is a good thing. It forces the company to improve their software. Humans need a reason to keep going otherwise we are lazy. Everyone knows that. Humans get lazy if there is no reason to do sh!t.
There always will be Ying and Yang in this world. You cannot blame any of the sides.
@Jandro83
Yea I kinda figure that but my console and router aren't that close, they are on opposite sides of the house meaning I'd have to get out my monster sized purple ethernet cable and drag it from side of the house to the other which is too much of a pain in the ass to do and would be a tripping hazard being right in front of the stairs *^^"* lol so I just settle for wi-fi
but I dunno if anyone heard but I heard something about that guy who hacked PSN has been hacked himself, what would you call that tragic irony or poetic justice?
#2 Gets it right.
No one will benefit. Majority of folks are upset at the hackers. I do not care if you CAN hack into the PSN. There is always someone better. I don't care about some justice that no one else cares about. No one will sympathize with you. People will be pissed at Sony and PSN.
Selfish little jerks.
It was a malicious attack. Do not disguise it as anything justified.
@ irrenman. #72
Well, who needs a Credit Card in the first place?
I got a debit card and I'm all happy with it.
@ 68 and 70 So we should blame Sony because hackers broken though their system. I guess if something Like Wal-mart was throbbed by top class thieves. We should just blame Wal-mart instead of the thieves? Sure PSN security could have been better, but at end of the day if no one would have hacked PSN. Nothing of this would have happened.
What is with you people...I have respect for this community but not for people who post bulls**t console war stuff when so many people have a playstation. Mocking people with identify theft, blaming sony, supporting the hackers...it's all ridiculous, maybe some of the kids here need to grow up and understand what this post was really about. Sven expressed profound concerns that are echoed by businesses and consumers everywhere.
But no, go back to your flame wars about Xbox, and about sony deserving it. It's a good thing I don't have an Xbox cause all this problem has shown is that there are a lot of douchebags that play Xbox live.
The people justifying the hackers actions are warped.
I hope they are brought to justice and face the full force of the law.
after going through the interview it sounds like the same old BS answers that sven and capcom feed us all the time.
@Remster #81
I'm not supporting the hackers, hell I can't play either. But it's not like hackers are the worst kind of humans on this planet, they at least don't really hurt anyone. Infact they're just improving our technology in the end (not considered the CC data is stolen).
I almost forgot about the CC data because for me it's so obvious not to pay with CC on the PSN or XBla thingy.
Dude, they hurt everyone whose information they stole. The only parties hackers don't hurt are themselves, and even that doesn't happen all the time due to the fact that they face litigation. You can't possibly be this dumb. What do you think HAPPENS with that information? It's sold to organized crime syndicates and used in identity theft and fraud.
this is why Nintendo is still my fav console (SNES to be exact). no one could hack it and it plays mostly all my fav games.
this is how the list goes old school consoles>PC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>360=PS3
for all you little 12 year-old fanboys out there
BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4
i too LOVE the classic games that SNES and NES gave us. those days and games will never be too old to play. but...
the hackers hacked the network servers, not just someones console. the reason why they never got to your SNES is cuz it had no network connection.
oh nother thing. the SNES WAS hacked. there's almost no piece of technology out there that can't be hacked into. here's just one site explaining what they did to it.
I hear alot of people saying F Capcom and they are money grubbing bastards. Well ..... You could go back to playing SSFII where you get what ya get with no extra bonus's. You can go back to paying $80 for SNES games because if you are old enough to be "OLD SCHOOL" you would know that games are cheaper now and still come with more content. You aren't forced to buy the extra skins for the characters, it doesn't affect the game play so whats the big deal. I think all the hackers did was prove that they are retards b/c they screwed everyone out of their gaming experience. What can ya do though, Stupid people make the world go round.
I love the idea that people who leave themselves vulnerable are 'asking for it' Ask yourself this, why do those who commit the crime go to jail? The victim doesn't go to jail if s/he walks down the street holding his/her ipod. 31st May is actually a huge exaggeration and Sony are trying to spread the word that the date is false
I knew the psn down was going to hurt them
