The guide to Oni, the final guide for the new characters coming to Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, has been completed.Oni is a tool-based character with a large amount of options at his disposal to engage fighters. He has a great mixup game (especially when he has EX) along with a very confusing reset game. Oni can really command the pace of a match with his Demon Palm and Air Hadou Dash while controlling space with his command normals. Both of his Ultras are very useful and powerful which add another component to his great utility game.
Oni has very poor reversal options though with a dragon punch that can't be FADC'd on block. His backdash is also poor, traveling very little distance. Oni's long-range offense is weak with a sub-par fireball game that can be easily avoided or punished. Lastly, Oni really needs meter to do any sort of significant damage, making him very dependent on it.
It was completed to the best of my ability using match videos, developer blogs and the AE cabinet at University Pinball Arcade.
No fadc on block, crappy fireball game, and cant backdash for sh1t. Why even put him in this game. Plus crappy health. Seems like vanilla Dan mixed with Gouken with good ultras and a super. They could of put Alex, rmika or hugo. But we get an half@$$ shoto with great normals and specials. His combos dont even intrigue me any more. Air vortex, i like, air raging demon, nice, ultras look very strong but on a crappy unsafe character. Guess iL try out eryu instead along with thawk, el fuerte and bison. Even regular akuma looks better then Oni. We should of gotten more characters. These four choices are really bad in my opinion.
In before idiot noobs contemplate if Oni is Gouken with Sakura's soul trapped inside. -_-
Wonder what tokidos thinking???????? Akuma/Oni/Akuma/Oni/Akuma/Oni, Akuma or Oni????? AKUMA????????????????????????? Or ONI??????????????????????????? a solid overall character or a strong weak challenging unsafe character??????? That really messes with your head.
@#3
He just seems like a character you need to be pretty advanced with. Pretty decent.
Well duhhhhhhh. Everyone on earth should already know that Gouken is not Oni. They just have a couple similar movesets. Doesnt mean zangief and thawk are the same or ken and ryu. balrog and bison etc. Hell even el fuerte, guy and rmika.
@#3
I can see what you mean, but I think give it time, and as more people figure things out with Evil Ryu & Oni they might not be as bad as the guide seems to make them out to be (it is unfinished after all.) Don't forget when Vanilla came out people thought C.Viper was bottom tier (thought tier lists mean nothing) and all her moves useless. Now look at her and what players can do with her. Give it time man...
I like how Oni, a character who isn't even playable to most of the world at this point, has an expansive and detailed guide, while characters like Hakan and T. Hawk, who have been around for over a year now, only have explanations of their special moves, and Gen, who was with the game when it launched, barely even has that.
@50 sent
I agree with you about hakan and Thawk, but honestly, i dont want there to be a guide for gen. i get what youre saying, that theres a character thats been around since vanilla and they dont have a guide up for him, but gens not really a character you can learn like that anyway. i main gen, and i know it sounds selfish of me, but i dont want him to be easily accessable to people. i like it how it is; a select few people with the balls to learn him lol. but yeah, gen shouldve had a guide compiled WAY b4 oni was even conceived, if they were gonna make a guide for him.
No FADC DP on block is incorrect. You can FADC off the 2nd hit of his DP.
Axlred, you can only FADC on hit, blocked or not. But yes it has to be the 2nd hit.
So you can fadc but it has to be on 2nd hit blocked or not. Hes looking more like a very limited unsafe Akuma. No jumping fireballs, shoots fireballs like gouken, he cant do that air flip grab, or air flip palm strike. Not sure of the name. Does he have a counter move like Gouken?? He has a nice vortex, but if you have to play Oni aggressively, with crap health and average combo ability then people are not really gonna use him in my opinion. Hes gonna be like super deejay and thawk or ibuki, nobodys going to use him much knowing the type of character he is. Gotta work like 3 times harder to win matchs and you ll barely see him online or in tourneys. Nice crossup specials, but i see people using that alot or abusing that with his vortex to try to win matchs in the future. His mixup game looks very poor.
Thing is the first hit pushes the opponent away to far if it gets blocked, so the 2 hit will whiff.
But if you hit a clean srk you can fadc the second hit, plus the game gives ya enough time between the first and second hit.
I like this, not like Kens SRK, thats... well according to be its PRETTY safe.
Yeah as ablove posts says, give him some time, and i bet ppl will own with him soon.
I mean all characters Capcom has put in sf4 series has potential. He aint that crappy :/
Just saying that because of the videos ive seen with people using Oni, pro or not.
no spamming shryukens. OH NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ':o~
i think im gonna like Oni. he seems like a very challenging character. i just hope that he doesnt turn out like Viper were in the beginning she was poop and now shes very strong (in the right hands). im sorry for the people who think otherwise, but id like for Oni to be a shoto that is complicated.
@3. As a Vega player, I see Oni from a lil bit different point of view. I see a good and scary character with great defensive options and punishes, strong pokes, almost all of them can be a beginning of serious damage combos. Good mixup game and surprising, fast moves as a combo starter makes him a damn good character. Just don't think about him as a shoto, think about him as Vega / Adon with shoto inputs. He is stronger than the previous examples (V/A), and has every tool for defense which other shotos have. A simple antair c.HP. You can't imagine how Vega and Adon players miss that.
BisonBetterBeGoodInSFF4 . . Damn you Bison, Damn you.
Thing is with the viper comparison, was that viper had and still does, a high execution barrier to be used effectively. With her feints and jump canceling. Oni doesnt have them kind of mechanics built into him so i dont see how he would take a turn around like viper.
So if Oni doing some good performance later on it would be mostly due to the person playing smart and being a merciless rushdown type player.
@ 19
for the record ...
LP uppercut hits 3 times as well and not twice like u put in the guide
All of the people saying he sucks, or he's going to be garbage, you're the same damn idiots that said dudley was going to be the vanilla sagat of Super....
So shut up...
I see oni being very good, if characters like C.Viper can win big tournaments, I see Oni's being very good and solid as well.
@9 you have a very good point. If I was oni I would just be in the air all day. Whats the opponent going to do..pretty much nothing. And he has a safe ground and pound move that stuffs all ground game pokes. Good anti airs with a fireball and nobody will pretty much touch him. I think he's gonna be the best character by far. Nobody can rush hime done because he's always in the air.
Wow I'm surprised by the no fadc on block, he's sounding like Rose except his ultras are useful and his backdash isn't as good. At least he has more damage output and an overhead.
I see a fair amount of similarities between him and Vega-poor reversal options and defence in general, but with some great pokes and very good ways to continue building pressure on his opponent.
Interesting on no DP fadc. That will eliminate players mashing dp and fadc out of it if opponent baits them by stopping a combo and block.
He depends heavily on meter is because he can't do lk tatsu into dp anymore. Plus his B&B combo cr lk, cr lp, cr mp, into fireball is weak. It sounds like Oni depends on EX tatsu combo ender or fadc combos using his targeting combos.
@Aluppoj You cannot FADC his dp on BLOCK. Basically, if you throw out a shoryu and they block, there's no way to save yourself. It's not a big deal, it's like Yun's up kicks. He can't FADC those either, so just use Oni's shoryus with caution, and only in combos or as anti air (which is works pretty well as)
And @RandomJohn I suppose you could say he relies on meter, but you can say that with any character. I use a relatively meterless Oni, it's just that his fadc combos are good. His bread and butter is typically not what you mentioned. If you start with a c.lk, the one I use is:
c.lk,(c.lp optional), s.lp, target combo 2 (away+mp, hp), hk hurricane.
Or if you want to FADC you can end with a fireball instead of tatsu, FADC into c.mp, target combo 2 then hk tatsu. Pretty combo.
If they crouch, THEN maybe I'll end with a fireball unless I'm close on confirms. I don't remember specifically at the moment, but I feel like if they're close enough, hk tatsu still hits. (c.mp, c.mp, hk tatsu works wonders) If not, ex tatsu off his easy confirms is fine as well.
Whose the best Oni right now? I want to watch some good Oni matches but I don't see any.
No FADC DP on block! He starting to sound more punishable than Sakura.
