Released as an arcade game in 1987, Street Fighter is home to a ton of "firsts". It was Capcom's first ever one-on-one fighter. It was the first Street Fighter game, a series that has spawned over a dozen sequels and successors. It was the first fighting game to feature the special attacks that are now a genre staple (think down + up + punch, etc). It was the first fighting game to use six buttons. And it was, believe it or not, the first game Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune ever worked on for Capcom (he drew the game's character portraits).
For those who have only played Street Fighter II (or the games that came afterwards), Street Fighter I is - in one of its two versions - a fairly similar game. You've got the same six-button layout, there's the same concept of travelling around the world kicking some ass and even some of the characters are the same: you can play as either Ryu or Ken, and the game's final boss is Sagat.

when you see how old this game is, it really aged well, like most capcom games
i remember how hard it was to pull off fireball and such but a dragon punch(if not mistaken) could kill your openent if you hit 3 times with it
anyway this game is the root of nowadays fighting games
Much better video to feature. THat guy was only using fierce punch. This one lets you see just how much creativity went into the game. For the first of it's kind, its still had all RYU's special moves.
I have this game on my computer via emulator. I honestly cannot believe how hard it is to do a special. Mr_Clack is right, pulling off a Shoryuken is like pulling teeth. However, when you do eventually get the move, you'll be shocked at how much damage it does. 3 Hadokens and it'll kill your opponent.
Capcom should update the rest of the cast ( Retsu, Lee, Joe, etc.) and include them in future titles/ editions.
@9 I honestly believe even if capcom won't admit it. That Mike and Boxer are the same character. They are both named Mike; and jump almost the same way. However...it would be rather moot since some obvious things like Birdie returning to Alpha as a very different character. Still there are only a few characters from 1 that haven't come back. Geki, Retsu, Lee, and Joe (notice his kick is identical to Cody's?). Also I was always fond of Eagle. He was one of my favs from CVS2.
Anyone remember the machines that had the one big Punch and Kick buttons for Street Fighter? And how hard you slammed them were how hard the attacks would be? Man, I don't know if the setting were messed up at my local arcade at the time, but you had to SLAM those buttons to get fierce or roundhouse to come out.
Oh my days!! This brought a smile to my face. Good times :D. 2 punches from Mike = ROFL

True but other games have done different and some stuff better than SF but I enjoy SF's approach on the mechanics of defense, resets and frame traps moreso but prefer the rushdown and combo system of MVC or Guilty Gear more than SF.
Glad there's other styles of play to games other than SF to make them worth playing. MK is the only one I can think of with a horrid combo system and general clunky mechanics. Hopefully the new one feels smoother.
that guy sucked didnt even do one super move but htey say it was hard but mehh
I may be born in 1991, but I gotta respect the daddy of all fighting games!
