Renynoise created a new guide for Sean in Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. Ranked dead last in the tier rankings and not played by many people, the basketball thrower is a bit of an acquired taste. While Sean is listed last in the tier rankings for Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, and he has some very difficult match ups, some players feel he is under appreciated.
After Capcom toned down his popular 2-hit Uppercut, changed his move set, and made him worse than he was in 2nd Impact, many fans turned their back on him. It takes a lot of time and patience to learn to use Sean well, and you can win with him if you're devoted enough, but the road is a difficult one.
Many of Sean's moves are punishable if blocked, so you have to be careful and really pick your spots with him — and hit confirm whenever possible. His moves can take off a good amount of damage though, so you can drain your opponent's life reasonably quickly if your execution is on point and you make really good reads.

How's the Oro matchup?
Sean isn't bad actually, but I'm a bit biased. I've played this game for so long I feel like every single character is usable. Personally, I'd rank twelve lower on the tier list than Sean, simply because of the amount of work you need to put into 12 for minimal damage. Sean is a powerhouse as long as you don't throw random moves. His dash mixups and close fierce and headbutt are quite useful.
I'm an Oro player myself though.
Here's my 3S Online Guess ...
1. Great Turbo-like Online options.
2. MVC3 Skill Wheel for the player.
3. Fan & Old art for menus.
4. Balancing with old character styles available meaning old Sean and Dudley.
5. All the music and backgrounds from III and Giants Attack in addition to 3S.
6. Shadow mode
7. Upscaled graphics like MVC2.
8. Easy control options.
9. Tournament options for streaming and brackets.
Boom. One million sold.
This is a great guide, but it depresses the hell out of me because of what it says about 3S. It breaks my heart reading that list of Sean's pros and cons at the beginning of it. "He does well after a parry?" That's every character. And look at his cons. He requires you to be mad on point to play him well.
I love 3S and all, and it's true what they say that everyone is usable. The problem is so much of the cast is so gimped they rely on exceptional parrying skills, making great reads(which, let's face it, is basically expecting you to be psychic or gamble if you don't know your opponent well), and being flawlessly solid and characters like Yun and Chun don't even need that. Chun is so solid she doesn't have to guess at all, and Yun is so good a caveman could play him.
As a Sean player, this guide is very relevant to my interests...
@10: So why is this game so monkey-buggeringly popular, and why does it turn its players into entitled, nostalgia-blinded jackasses?
Third Strike won't get half as big as SF4, it's too technical. By nature 3rd strike has a high barrier of entry, "scrubs" won't want to put the amount of work in to be good at the game and 3rd strike essentially enforces the concept that you can't just be random and get far. I knew a great CoD player that hated SF4 because he felt it was too "hard." These games just require a higher level of competitive gaming skills and that takes years to hone.
I wouldn't mind getting Sean in AE....instead of another Ryu.
@10 Yeah, it's like he's trying to sell DLC character so he's making stuff up :\
@11 haha true
@15 I'm assuming you're trying to troll, because you are wrong, and your comments on EH mostly lead to trolling.
Anyway, whenever there's news about older game on EH, some SF4 players come and reveal their ignorance on the series.

Well, 3S was not as popular as it seems. It wasn't that popular then either(relatively speaking. It was an SF game, of course it was still getting mad play).
The reason 3S is looked upon so favorably is:
1) The game is jaw-droppingly beautiful, to this day possibly the finest video game ever in terms of sprite animation. Guilty Gear, Arcana Heart, Blazblue, Vanguard Princess, etc. may have higher res or fancier looking sprites, but in terms of animation they are a slideshow compared to the fluidity of 3S.
2) It is REALLY cool to watch. It's one of those games that is just amazing to watch(less amazing to play, once you understand it).
3) It had like a resurgence of popularity and brought in a lot of new people because of the last two points, so there's some nostalgia factor because it was the first fighter a lot of people took seriously.
4) The game is faster, more technical, and in most ways less forgiving than the current fighters on the market, so people remember it as more hardcore and therefore better. I'm not saying it wasn't hardcore, but I'll say that the hardcore-ness of 3S is exaggerated.
It's a great game though. Just has its flaws and the fanbase is full of cool guys, it's just a very vocal minority making the rest look bad. It's the same for every game, isn't it?
"and made him worse than he was in 2nd Impact"
umm when was Sean worse in 2nd impact? lol he was pretty much mid-teir if not top teir (after Akuma Ibuki and Denjin Ryu).
i cant wait for this to come online. btw i think people are throwing the word scrub too loosely. a scrub is someone who uses the words cheap or spam or any other word that makes them justify their crappy skills. if someone who started with SF4 is trying to play 3rd strike and wants to get good at it then he/she is NOT a scrub. i cant remember the last time someone played 3rd strike for the first time and beat everybody. its a hard game to master and calling new comers "scrubs" wont get this game an online edition ( in terms of sales that is). if my definition of scrub is wrong, then i guess Kuroda and Ino MOV RX Thanatos etc... were all scrubs.
Sean was my favorite character in second impact, I hated what happened but I still use him and I will continue to do so.
I can't wait to see the other Sean players out there.
@28 I can understand not knowing the oro matchup, and not to overhype my own skills, but I remember that match clearly and it was more a question of relative ability and experience than characters and matchup knowledge. As for this guide, you kind of gave Sean too many pros. Sean can't do strong one-off damage without a super, his target combo is mostly effective with SA3 only (while his other supers are much more viable), and ANYONE has good situations after a parry. In fact, Sean is one of the worst characters to land a parry with because without bar he really can't hurt you. I'll give you good supers and a high super jump being pros, that stuff is actually okay. The flat out of the matter is that he isn't a very good character and if you're playing him your skills would be better allocated to Ken or Akuma :/
Whhhy do I read the comments? Whhhy? xD
Ugh what a train wreck.
their backs, not they're.
THEY ARE BACKS!
