This looks pretty hard and awkward to learn, but possible. With my luck I would learn it, master it, then find out its banned, and I can't use it.
This stick alone would kill wolverines berserk slash cross up because you can hold forward and back at the same time, and never get crossed up.
ACIDx, yes... you can buffer charge with this easily. And it's much simpler, because you don't have to release the charge direction. So basicly, you can do ultras with two forward taps.
I'm thinking of buying this one, I'm just not sure if it'll be allowed in tourneys.
I doubt the hitbox is gonna be banned outside of MAYBE mvc3
Overall just seems like an alternate to a stick or pad with no real major advantages/disadvantages outside of preference. I wonder, if the hitbox becomes popular and prevalent, will Capcom patch the whole "hold both directions to block crossups" thing in MVC3 so it wouldn't be banned?
I wish they have a cross design for the Dpad..
Reminds me when i was playing sf4 pc using the keyboard.
I was to cheap to buy an arcade stick before, : )
Hey everybody, as always I am JohnGrimm with hit Box here to answer some questions and clear up misconceptions.
First off, no, you cannot hold down back and tap forward for charge moves. Continued with this, no, you cannot hold both directions and block both directions in MvC3. Both of these issues are fixed with a firmware on our PCB. Left + right will always equal neutral, so neither of these situatins will be possible with an official Hit Box. Priority number one is to make sure no one is using our product to cheat in any way, shape, or form.
Secondly, and once again, no, the Hit Box is not, nor will it ever be banned from any major tournament. With the above fixes we've made (not to mention the only game that has negative results without said fixes is MvC3, which has results that can be duplicated on pad as well) there is no reason to fear a tournament ban.
Lastly, we will not ever produce another layout. We are confident in the layout we have selected. We have done countless hours worth of testing on any layout you can possible imagine, and we have came to the conclusion that this is the best layout. If you give it a chance we're sure you'll agree with us once you've become accustomed to the change in input.
@zUkUu
Traditionally, when someone is talking about the attack area of a move, there is no space and no capitals. Is it really so hard to discern hitbox from Hit Box? Also, "Stickless Fight Stick" is not nearly as catchy, and also tramples on the Fight Stick brand created by Madcatz.
I've been using left thumb to jump so I'm gonna try right tonight
I definitely like this alternative method of controls, I just wish I'd know about this sooner. Going from stick in the 90's to pad in the great fighter depression, and now back to stick. I don't want to relearn another control scheme, lol. Good luck to you guys @ HitBox, excellent peripheral.
My question after the video is this...i still don't understand how to do the directions for special moves such as hadoken or shoryuken...
Lets use #7's comment as an example, with that set-up would a fire ball be s, s+d, d? You just have to hold down s double tap d?
And an uppercut would be d, s, d+s?
Charge moves are a little more obvious lol. It's kinda sad cause i took piano lessons as a kid this kinda reminds me of that.
When I was at NCR, NerdJosh, Marn, and a few other top players were talking about these, and saying they hope they get banned (and apparently are at some east coast tourneys) because they provide an unfair advantage. Not sure if they know about the change to the blocking both directions thing, but none the less, it does feel as though a huge human element is removed with this.
then again, 'joy box'... ;)
I'm on the waiting list but I do need to say that there is not much information besides a video of it. What parts are used? How long does it take to build? Who builds it? How much does it cost? What's the difference between the two versions? etc.
I'm getting a bit of a ghetto felling right now
@24: let's take your kb notation A, S, D for back, down, forward
- fireball would be S,D punch (think ice ball in Mortal Kombat)
- shoryuken D,S,D + punch
because of the negative edge on buttons, you don't need to to do intermediary diagonals like down-forward, down-back in motions. when you roll your fingers from down to forward, you'll inevitably be in a down-forward state at some point between the presses.
@25: aside from the MVC3 bug that has been fixed with the firmware update in the new models, how exactly does it "feel as though a huge human element is removed with this"?
in my view, the only advantage keyboard/hitbox gives is consistency and this is highly subjective and hardly an advantage at medium-high level.
because the directions are individual buttons, it's harder to accidentally hit a unwanted direction like on stick or pad.
that's about it.
"Left + right will always equal neutral, so neither of these situatins will be possible with an official Hit Box."
So it's a nerfed PC keyboard, and two forward taps doesn't work for ultras? Good way to lose a customer in my case, but I guess the competitive scene wouldn't accept it otherwise...
Interesting idea and I hope I get a chance to try one sometime.
The up button placement, was that a gradual change (from above the down button to through many iterations) or did someone have a Eureka moment to come up with the jump button analogy?
Still, the name -is- a bit confusing. I know the makers want to make a distinction between "hitbox" and "Hit Box", but I noticed most people just write the first when they mean the latter. Not to mention that there's no difference in the spoken versions.
I do agree that anything like "Stickless Fight Stick" doesn't have the same ring to it and honestly is a bit stupid. However, since it is a box with buttons on it, may I suggest "The Button Box" or the catchier "ButtBox"? ("FightButt"??)
@31: works in every game (ST, Alpha2, 3S).
SRK is D,S,D (forward, down, forward) + punch.. you obviously have to roll through them thus getting the correct motion
@32: yeah, i think you're right. there's no negative edge to directions, but intermediary states
I built one of these myself and there are some things that are better and some that are worse than a stick.
Of course things like super jump, dashes and charge moves or dd movements are gdlk on hitbox. I really like it for those things. Even qcf and qcb movements I think are easier and more accurate on hitbox. For me dp movement goes back and forth on what I prefer.
However any thing greater than a quarter circles worth of movement is almost impossible for me. Half circle motions, tiger knee motions, and especially 360's. It requires exponentially greater precision the bigger the movement. Precision is great, but not when you need to pull out a big movement quick. For me, the problem is the df or db input will often get skipped over. I have NEVER been able to Zangief's 2x 360 ultra with one. I use it for SF4 and MvC3 and it gives me problems in both.
Ultimately, for me, using a joystick works best overall, even though I really love the idea of the hitbox.
This looks interesting :D I'm still waiting on a dual modded version that plays on 360 and ps3 just hope I can get into it. But I can play on a keyboard and a D-pad, just not a stick :/
This is an expensive product so I think what's stopping people from purchasing one is that they don't know if they'll like the setup. I think maybe you guys should bring it to more events to gain acceptance in the community. If top players starts to use it and does well, I'm sure the vast majority will come around as well. Sometimes the best marketing strategy is to sponsor or give out a few to tournaments players and have them represent your brand; similar to what MadCatz and Hori is doing. I have a TE Madcatz stick and I never got the hang of it; it's collecting dust somewhere in my closet. The reason why is mostly due to the joystick; it feels uncomfortable. This is something that interests me but like I stated before, I would have to try it out first and feel comfortable with it before making a purchase.
How about performing charge moves? can't you just hold down back forever and just tap forward to use the move and after it goes away just tap forward and repeat?
