Some news that's sure to make fans of PC gaming happy was posted today by Capcom's vice president, Christian Svensson. He had this to say about Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition's PC release.
Shortly after launch (it might even be at launch, but we’ll see how submission timing and approval goes) we will roll out a small title update that will completely remove the character limitations for offline mode. That is to say, once you’ve updated, you will be able to use all 39 characters when not connected to the Internet to practice your combo timings, have some fun with a friend on a laptop, or whatever while offline.
As one would logically expect, to get any of the benefits of the online services (online multiplayer, replay sharing/watching, achievements, etc.) you must be online and logged in.
With that hurdle hopefully now cleared, I hope that we can make Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition the most successful fighting game ever on PC. I’d certainly like to continue to grow our audience on the largest platform in the world.
Keep in mind this is a quick turn around after there was a big response from the community about the DRM issue. Capcom was very active in listening to alternative solutions, and it's nice to see they found one that alleviates some of the issues people brought up and were able to implement it very quickly.
inb4 it was all planned from the start, you got trolled.
inb4 scrub complaining about other stuff
Wow, I'm...I'm genuinely impressed.
Very classy, Capcom. I eat all my bad words about their PC business. This is a *good* move.
I must applaud Capcom for this. That is a damn quick turnaround, and I approve wholeheartedly.
Thank you, Mr Svennson!
"We had it wrong" means "we listened to your logic and reason, and found it to be more logical and reasonable than what we had planned."
And for that, Capcom...I will buy your top execs one beer whenever you feel like cashing that in. You guys deserve it, very classy and intelligent move made, there.
Repsect to Capcom. Can anyone show me another gaming company that announces removal of part of DRM BEFORE the game came out? I sure can't. Capcom sometimes pisses me off... But for such things it's still one of my favourite (if not the most) companies. :D
"I’d certainly like to continue to grow our audience on the largest platform in the world."
I'll do my part when and if there's a (sensible) rebalance patch and the PC platform receives it, not just consoles, or else something causes me to reassess how good the balance in the game actually is. Until then it's vanilla, or other games if it turns into an internet ghost-town.
Sweet! Can't wait to play this at real high resolutions with AA.
Wow they really worked pretty quick to absolve the situation. Now I can create that arcade cabinet. This was the only gripe I had with the DRM. Pre-order away I go.
@SilentSoul: It would have been cracked anyway. The only supposed purpose to cripple software offline is if people who download games illegally are so impatient to have the game that they won't wait for the cracked version but instead buy it, but cracking happens so quickly now that it seems inane to bother.
In fact, I wonder if giving crackers absolutely nothing to crack will make them get bored of their hobby and not bother uploading the game? It's an ego-driven thing after all; some people are so stupid/pathetic that they honour the pirate in their minds more than the developer.
Thanks a ton that s a great move, can't wait to play it =)
oh good, even though I will buy the ps3 version I will buy this too
I will give it a month or 2 though before buying to see how much it will go for sale
Excellent news! Good to hear Capcom listened to the community and backed away from the business of lumping honest consumers in with pirates.
PC Gaming is alive and well, the consumer base is legitimate, and this is certainly another title that I'll be sure to purchase and enjoy for years to come.
July can't come soon enough!
I've been playing my old vanilla PC SF4 lately, and it reminds me of how much better the PC experience is (generally...there are still idiots out there using crappy computers). It's hard to play console right after. PC online doesn't have that "under water" effect.
Can't wait! Going to preorder my copy tonight.
This is great news for expanding the PC community, thank YOU!
So many reasons to get this on PC.
FTW.
They have that online drm all the time with starcraft 2 and I still bought the game. Having this update on the drm just makes buying ssf4 ae for the pc an even better experience. Thanks capcom!
Now people please keep this article in mind whenever you decide to sh!t on Capcom and act like they are the worst people ever. Like probably in the very next article.
im very happy for you guys. and this thread is indeed the most positive. however, id hate to have this pirated and thus the ones who do, they will get their's back. karma comes back around...you female dogs.
see i also managed to keeps it positive, within reason.
AT last they listened... Thanks Capcom..
at least we know there listening to fans.
been voicing my opinion ever since i heard the news.
This is great.. : )
Now guys be good and don't pirate the game OK.
I'm surprised. I thought they were idiots with that DRM and now, they remove it. Well, glad you did.
The game still has GFWL. So it -will- get pirated. I'm still not sure if I'm getting it.
If the DRM remained though, it would have been a definite "no".
So thats an improvement.
@darko
Yeah, I felt the positivity. That's why I said to keep this article in mind, so they can remember that Capcom is not the monsters people act like they are at times. Look at all they are trying to do for us now. They obviously listen to us.
And sometimes they have to act accordingly to gain sales, this, for starters, gained tons of clients and made one of the most positive threads on EH.
Let's take into account that CAPCOM is a business, I hope they do listen to us like this in the future.
Also, it takes pants to stand like this in front of fans and say: "We had it wrong, you were right".
Great job. Now if only we could do something about GFWL.
That is to say, once you’ve updated, you will be able to use all 39 characters when not connected to the Internet to practice your combo timings, have some fun with a friend on a laptop, or whatever while offline.
I'm happy for PC users. It never made sense for you not to able able to play with whatever character you choose when offline in a fighting game.
Make sure you get out there and show Capcom love! Capcom has to make compromises based on their goals, but they know they'd only make $2 if they tried that crappy DRM. lol
Guys.
Did you ever wonder whether this was in the plan all along? They seem to be following a pattern of dashing hopes and making people angry--at least if the trollno-twaunt about new characters is true--and then renewing them with what they hope is an even higher peak of feverish enthusiasm for the release. As crooked as it is, I hope this trend keeps up until release date...
The patch is DLC, so it becomes just another means of authenticating the client.
If it affects framerate it will make the game run slowly or drop frames and the other player's game will slow down or drop frames to match it, but that's not what bandwidth is. They may also have been talking about response time on the monitor but I don't think the card has any effect on that either.
Well, that is nice.
