Oni's second alt. costume in Super Street Fighter 4 AE takes battle damage

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • July 5, 2011 at 11:50 p.m. PDT
BrawlKarter noticed that Oni's second alternative costume in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition takes battle damage. Here's a collage of shots to show how the outfit changes.

This is the first time Capcom has added clothing damage into the SF4 series. Would you like to see more of this in future games? Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Even better than Seth's Super alt. Nice, I like it.

v/ awesome. I'd love a Yun costume where his face gets smashed in further and further througout the match, or a Seth costume where the head gets more and more cracked until it smashes like porcelain and you see Poongko's head inside.

If you kill Oni now with that Alternate, he'll become more powerful than you can ever imagine.

SilentSoul said on July 5, 2011 at 11:58 p.m.

Battle Damage to Characters would be a great addition in some aspects. Wondering what is happening to Oni in that alt. Is he fading from existence? With power like his, walking that fine line of Life and Death.

Kuai said on July 5, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.

just dont make it as annoying as MK9s battle damage and ill be ok with it

General_Awesomo said on July 5, 2011 at 11:59 p.m.

OH! I just thought of something! Could this also be an allusion to the defeat portraits from SF2? That's sick!

Chun-Li, Juri, and C.Viper getting their costumes ripped apart as they go? MEGUSTA

only to female characters... :p jk. but I would love an option to disable it - just to be on the save side if it turns out to be anoying.

#8
laurieyuken said on July 6, 2011 at 12:01 a.m.

Or a Fei Long costume that's like a stack of all his existing ones, so he starts off in a suit, then it gets ripped off with the Game Of Death jumpsuit underneath (really needs to be a Fei alt), then that rips off into the Kato suit, then finally that rips and it's that one with the chest scratches.

#9
ScytheWP said on July 6, 2011 at 12:02 a.m.

That's pretty bad ass. Now if only he was better...

#10
General_Awesomo said on July 6, 2011 at 12:02 a.m.

Battle damage would be fine for all characters except Vega.

jpcampusano said on July 6, 2011 at 12:04 a.m.

Stupid character...

#12
foreverbadass said on July 6, 2011 at 12:05 a.m.

@9

That'd be so badass; I'm all for that idea.

#13
GamePirate420 said on July 6, 2011 at 12:08 a.m.

Those lazy bastards should have used this idea in the 1st place to set it apart more from the other SFs instead of now being a rip-off of MK9.

irrenmann said on July 6, 2011 at 12:11 a.m.

Extremely cool.

#15
shinakka said on July 6, 2011 at 12:12 a.m.

Pretty sure it gets even more damaged than that. I was massing around with it for a few hours today while practicing combos. It breaks on the specific areas you hit. Its rather awesome.

Dreamking23 said on July 6, 2011 at 12:15 a.m.

@#6: very nice use of the word "allusion" hah

#17
DashXero said on July 6, 2011 at 12:18 a.m.

It looks cool.

It's almost like by damaging Oni, you're tearing away at the outer shell that used to be Gouki/Akuma exposing the pure malevolent energy that he has become. Instead of flesh and bone, there's just energy...

Almost like epic tier Monks in earlier editions of D&D. He has ceased to be a man and is now considered an "Outsider."

Would I like to see this for more characters and costumes? Only if it could be done tastefully.

#18
powderedtoastman said on July 6, 2011 at 12:18 a.m.

IIRC When arts of fighting first came out in the arcades WAY back it had battle damage. Wouldnt exactly be ripping off MK.

And about the Oni fragile body, im sure its homage to capcom new game Asura wraths. seeing how akuma got influences relating to Asura, even his teleport is named after it. And The main character in the game body/arms like to break apart and oni looks like he could be a character in the game.... im sure there is no coincidences.

#19
Aikinage said on July 6, 2011 at 12:21 a.m.

^^^ Agree!

This is the very least Capcom could do. It seems like too little, too late, a blatant reactive move to try and catch up with MK9.

Really though, in a 3.5D game there should be massive scope for costume customisation. Take a look at Virtual Fighter 5 Final Showdown! The costume customisation in that game makes all
Other 3D fighters look dirt cheap by comparison. Maybe that's why it's the highest grossing arcade fighter in Japan.

#20
bagel_bytez said on July 6, 2011 at 12:48 a.m.

definitely sick. battle damage and costume customization with the beat up faces would be legen-- wait forit --dary!

#21
FlawlessMatador said on July 6, 2011 at 12:54 a.m.

@GamePirate420

Are you stupid? You seem so. Other fighters have used this idea so is Mortal Kombat ripping them off?

#22
Zerophysco1294 said on July 6, 2011 at 1 a.m.

Looks cool. If they continue this they should only damage the costumes though and not the actual character. It just happens to work in this case though.

Ryu_Apprentice said on July 6, 2011 at 1:11 a.m.

well its plausible and doable, I dont mind,

@Kuai

Annoying? I think you mean unbelievably flawless.

#28
caruga said on July 6, 2011 at 2:31 a.m.

Wonder if this is an idea they lifted from MK9 (without the blood).

#29
caruga said on July 6, 2011 at 2:32 a.m.

Incidentally if they introduce battle damage I'd like to see the fighters draw a bit of blood like in the early street fighter games.

#30
caruga said on July 6, 2011 at 2:33 a.m.

@23: I think it would look strange when their clothing somehow suffers battle damage but their bodies are pristine.

#31
Sasuga said on July 6, 2011 at 2:41 a.m.

It's pretty cool but I haven't missed it at all. It doesn't really add anything to the game itself.

#32
RedPantyAddict said on July 6, 2011 at 2:42 a.m.

@31 Caruga

You did never watch Ikki Tousen, did you?
The girls fight each other and the clothes get ripped of while their bodies only get hurt if they hit them REAL hard. Like punching them "through" buildings lol It's somehow a bit "pervy" but it makes sense because the fighters superhuman strengths and I think this would suit the SF cast as well.

@GamePirate420

Are you stupid? You seem so. Other fighters have used this idea so is Mortal Kombat ripping them off?

-For someone named flawless you seem to have plenty of flaws in your controlling your anger and seeing from the other person's side and FAILing to understand what I said.

-For example MK was NOT the 1st game to have blood but it's the one that got credit for creating the A-holes at the ESRB

-Resident Evil was NOT the 1st survival horror but it got the credit.

-MK9 was NOT the 1st fighting game to have battle damage but it's the 1st mainstream one that did and but since MK9 came out and clearly these characters were dont AFTER MK9's debut it looks like a rip-off.

-IF your argument was valid Capcom would have done this in the 1st place to rip from other fighters in the past like you said. But it'd far after MK and it should have been done before it's release.

-Cacpom can now PR say, that they did this before MK9 came out. But we all knew it was to test the waters. FOR WHAT?

=Was it really that bad of an idea to SEE damage to the characters in the fight rather than staring at a vitality gauge all of the time.

#34
Ex_Ein said on July 6, 2011 at 3:42 a.m.

It's very Ryu Final
During the final fight of Ryu Final Ryu and Akuma/Gouki fight but as the fight progresses Akuma started to literally starts to break apart from his own blows

#35
Batsu said on July 6, 2011 at 3:44 a.m.

Awesome, Gouki from the RYU:Final, maybe?

#36
WilliamMurderface said on July 6, 2011 at 3:59 a.m.

i remember reading when SFIV was first announced that it would have battle damage. pretty sure it was in the SFIV debut article in EGM.

i always figured that some of the alt costumes were originally damage models. like ryu's and dictator's for example.

#37
J said on July 6, 2011 at 4:09 a.m.

I didn't care much for this outfit, but now I'm interested. That's a neat little feature.

#38
Ex_Ein said on July 6, 2011 at 5:08 a.m.

The Dictator costume doesn't looke like it's proeperly battle damaged

#42

I think this costume / skin does not fits Oni, I don't like it. I'll buy it anyway as the part of the complete dlc pack.

#43
i208khonsu said on July 6, 2011 at 6:35 a.m.

@9 A little alaborate for all of those costumes over the corse of one round. However on second thought you could for instance after loosing one round Fei will then rip off the rest of the suit leaving the kato costume in place at the beginning of the next round.

Simirally you could have Bison play with his cape and hat to start off with. While taking damage his hat would be knocked off and his clothes would be ripped up to the point of his first alt. At the beginning of the next round after loosing he throws off his cape like he normally does at the beginning of the match.

-God I'm such a carebear.

all i see in this alt scream Asuras Wrath, look out for that game is from Capcom, look at main character design and hair... Akumas wrath?

Someone make this Oni a Gaara of the Sand skin :D

#46
Kamhaul said on July 6, 2011 at 7:02 a.m.

yeah i was surprised when i first saw the battle damage during a game
if capcom were to incorporate it in the future, it should end up looking like bison's and ryu's alt 2

#47
goukibuki said on July 6, 2011 at 7:06 a.m.

Request for clothing damage to Cammy please.

#48
SFJake said on July 6, 2011 at 9 a.m.

Yeah, yeah.

You know what, SF4 was supposed to have this in the first place.

So what about next time they get off their lazy ass and do it then, instead of years later.

#49
Necreon said on July 6, 2011 at 9:06 a.m.

@49

I'm glad there is no costume damage in the game. It would totally ruin the Street Fighter feeling. It's okay in MK becase that's a game for ruthless lawless killing, but SF is all about martial arts and legal tournaments.

Shoutouts to Mortal Kombat character damage

#53
jimk23 said on July 6, 2011 at 10:17 a.m.

It's a pretty good idea to have battle damage, but an option to turn it off would be good too for the purists.
And for the record, the dragon ball games have battle damage since the ps2.

#54
mfinnegan73 said on July 6, 2011 at 10:37 a.m.

As long as it is not like mortal kombat where the people look like they have been caught in a lawnmower I really like this idea.

#55
TonyCorleone said on July 6, 2011 at 10:48 a.m.

Yeh, it looks great. If they could introduce damage to the face as your health meter depletes, you know, a few bruises, maybe some blood, it would look great!

Come on Capcom,do it... do it, do it, dooooo it. You can do get your ass into it.

#56
Creeper said on July 6, 2011 at 10:50 a.m.

The damage is hard to incur. I don't own the costume myself, but I went through several replays of Onis using it and there was only one where he reached the damage level labeled "Focus Attack Level 3 x1." Is it ONLY level 3 Focus Attacks that damage him?

Also, the cracks that are always present have a cool glowing effect when Oni uses U2.

#57
6ixx said on July 6, 2011 at 11:07 a.m.

I like the idea granted it uses a system that applies the battle damage depending on the area hit. Like If I smash in his face a lot, he should take a lot of face damage, and so on and so forth.

#58
Tabris said on July 6, 2011 at 11:36 a.m.

The perverts would love something like this for female characters.

#59
xShonuffx said on July 6, 2011 at 12:35 p.m.

freakin awsome. You know this goes back to the very first EGM article on Vanilla SFIV before it came out when they asked if the characters would take battle damage, I guess this was their opportunity to test it. Wish this was on every character. Prety nice.

#60
Kuya117 said on July 6, 2011 at 1:28 p.m.

It's too bad they couldn't have done this to Seth earl on.

#61
Astar said on July 6, 2011 at 3:45 p.m.

Here's an idead for battle damage: Juri's eye. Her eye is broken and bleeding from the socket.

#62
Dude130 said on July 6, 2011 at 3:50 p.m.

Battle damage would be cool as long as they don't make it stupidly impossible like MK.

#63
DashXero said on July 6, 2011 at 4:31 p.m.

@#62, or the eye could turn black and blue like Abel and Seth's eyes and start spewing sparks.

#64
OhYouDontSayThat said on July 6, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.

Wow thats awesome, but as to if "Capcom should do this with more characters" is debatable, cause it'd be alot of cosmetic work for cosmetic's sake.

#65
SkllXMnky said on July 6, 2011 at 6:51 p.m.

There is always a way to turn something into an argument lol...

#66
OvrZealous said on July 6, 2011 at 7:45 p.m.

Damage on clothes/costumes seems cool, nothing too crazy like boobs flying outta all the females clothes or the males having their junk almost fly out of some of their less clothed Alt's.

But battle damage on their faces like bruises and cuts or even blood seems too much, maybe like minor scratches, this is not Mortal Kombat after all.

#67
Jammy said on July 6, 2011 at 7:54 p.m.

The comments saying they stole this from MK makes me want to go find MK videos and be like "shout outs to street fighters fireballs" "Shout out to street fighter super moves", you know, that kinda thing.

Battle damage in a fighting game is more or less part and parcel of what you're getting. Most fighting games will branch out into it at least once or twice, it's only MK and a few others that have made a name out of it. If you think SF is stealing this from MK you might as well go find the very first fighting game ever and sketch Hipster glasses onto your TV screen.

As if Street Fighter has to catch up to a game that no one played after they turned 10.

Dflowen said on July 7, 2011 at 1:31 a.m.
