v/ awesome. I'd love a Yun costume where his face gets smashed in further and further througout the match, or a Seth costume where the head gets more and more cracked until it smashes like porcelain and you see Poongko's head inside.
If you kill Oni now with that Alternate, he'll become more powerful than you can ever imagine.
Battle Damage to Characters would be a great addition in some aspects. Wondering what is happening to Oni in that alt. Is he fading from existence? With power like his, walking that fine line of Life and Death.
OH! I just thought of something! Could this also be an allusion to the defeat portraits from SF2? That's sick!
Chun-Li, Juri, and C.Viper getting their costumes ripped apart as they go? MEGUSTA
Or a Fei Long costume that's like a stack of all his existing ones, so he starts off in a suit, then it gets ripped off with the Game Of Death jumpsuit underneath (really needs to be a Fei alt), then that rips off into the Kato suit, then finally that rips and it's that one with the chest scratches.
Battle damage would be fine for all characters except Vega.
Those lazy bastards should have used this idea in the 1st place to set it apart more from the other SFs instead of now being a rip-off of MK9.
It looks cool.
It's almost like by damaging Oni, you're tearing away at the outer shell that used to be Gouki/Akuma exposing the pure malevolent energy that he has become. Instead of flesh and bone, there's just energy...
Almost like epic tier Monks in earlier editions of D&D. He has ceased to be a man and is now considered an "Outsider."
Would I like to see this for more characters and costumes? Only if it could be done tastefully.
IIRC When arts of fighting first came out in the arcades WAY back it had battle damage. Wouldnt exactly be ripping off MK.
And about the Oni fragile body, im sure its homage to capcom new game Asura wraths. seeing how akuma got influences relating to Asura, even his teleport is named after it. And The main character in the game body/arms like to break apart and oni looks like he could be a character in the game.... im sure there is no coincidences.
^^^ Agree!
This is the very least Capcom could do. It seems like too little, too late, a blatant reactive move to try and catch up with MK9.
Really though, in a 3.5D game there should be massive scope for costume customisation. Take a look at Virtual Fighter 5 Final Showdown! The costume customisation in that game makes all
Other 3D fighters look dirt cheap by comparison. Maybe that's why it's the highest grossing arcade fighter in Japan.
definitely sick. battle damage and costume customization with the beat up faces would be legen-- wait forit --dary!
@GamePirate420
Are you stupid? You seem so. Other fighters have used this idea so is Mortal Kombat ripping them off?
Looks cool. If they continue this they should only damage the costumes though and not the actual character. It just happens to work in this case though.
@31 Caruga
You did never watch Ikki Tousen, did you?
The girls fight each other and the clothes get ripped of while their bodies only get hurt if they hit them REAL hard. Like punching them "through" buildings lol It's somehow a bit "pervy" but it makes sense because the fighters superhuman strengths and I think this would suit the SF cast as well.

-For someone named flawless you seem to have plenty of flaws in your controlling your anger and seeing from the other person's side and FAILing to understand what I said.
-For example MK was NOT the 1st game to have blood but it's the one that got credit for creating the A-holes at the ESRB
-Resident Evil was NOT the 1st survival horror but it got the credit.
-MK9 was NOT the 1st fighting game to have battle damage but it's the 1st mainstream one that did and but since MK9 came out and clearly these characters were dont AFTER MK9's debut it looks like a rip-off.
-IF your argument was valid Capcom would have done this in the 1st place to rip from other fighters in the past like you said. But it'd far after MK and it should have been done before it's release.
-Cacpom can now PR say, that they did this before MK9 came out. But we all knew it was to test the waters. FOR WHAT?
=Was it really that bad of an idea to SEE damage to the characters in the fight rather than staring at a vitality gauge all of the time.
i remember reading when SFIV was first announced that it would have battle damage. pretty sure it was in the SFIV debut article in EGM.
i always figured that some of the alt costumes were originally damage models. like ryu's and dictator's for example.
imo it seems as if he shedding his human form for the demon oni underneath they new form
@9 A little alaborate for all of those costumes over the corse of one round. However on second thought you could for instance after loosing one round Fei will then rip off the rest of the suit leaving the kato costume in place at the beginning of the next round.
Simirally you could have Bison play with his cape and hat to start off with. While taking damage his hat would be knocked off and his clothes would be ripped up to the point of his first alt. At the beginning of the next round after loosing he throws off his cape like he normally does at the beginning of the match.
-God I'm such a carebear.
As long as it is not like mortal kombat where the people look like they have been caught in a lawnmower I really like this idea.
Yeh, it looks great. If they could introduce damage to the face as your health meter depletes, you know, a few bruises, maybe some blood, it would look great!
Come on Capcom,do it... do it, do it, dooooo it. You can do get your ass into it.
The damage is hard to incur. I don't own the costume myself, but I went through several replays of Onis using it and there was only one where he reached the damage level labeled "Focus Attack Level 3 x1." Is it ONLY level 3 Focus Attacks that damage him?
Also, the cracks that are always present have a cool glowing effect when Oni uses U2.
freakin awsome. You know this goes back to the very first EGM article on Vanilla SFIV before it came out when they asked if the characters would take battle damage, I guess this was their opportunity to test it. Wish this was on every character. Prety nice.
Wow thats awesome, but as to if "Capcom should do this with more characters" is debatable, cause it'd be alot of cosmetic work for cosmetic's sake.
Damage on clothes/costumes seems cool, nothing too crazy like boobs flying outta all the females clothes or the males having their junk almost fly out of some of their less clothed Alt's.
But battle damage on their faces like bruises and cuts or even blood seems too much, maybe like minor scratches, this is not Mortal Kombat after all.
The comments saying they stole this from MK makes me want to go find MK videos and be like "shout outs to street fighters fireballs" "Shout out to street fighter super moves", you know, that kinda thing.
Battle damage in a fighting game is more or less part and parcel of what you're getting. Most fighting games will branch out into it at least once or twice, it's only MK and a few others that have made a name out of it. If you think SF is stealing this from MK you might as well go find the very first fighting game ever and sketch Hipster glasses onto your TV screen.
As if Street Fighter has to catch up to a game that no one played after they turned 10.
Even better than Seth's Super alt. Nice, I like it.
