Ono posts image of Yun, mentions Street Fighter 3 Online Edition

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • January 31, 2011 at 11:42 p.m. PST
Yoshinori Ono just added this photo of Yun to his Twitter account, with the caption that read:

Oh, SFIII 3rd Online so nice! It will be fun!! ;D

In typical Ono fashion, he left things open. Is this our first look at Street Fighter 3 Online Edition? Is it a character model for Yun in Street Fighter X Tekken? Something else entirely?

It was mentioned earlier that Ono was visiting with Namco Bandai games today, if that has any bearing on this image. Leave a comment below with your thoughts on the picture.

I'm not sure how I'll be able to balance my time 5 months or so. That's a lot of fighters to swallow.

sorry bout the first post!!! I cant Edit it!!! but yeah Yun LOOKING BADASS!!!

kanped said on January 31, 2011 at 11:48 p.m.

It looks like its a menu background pic, like the Ryu/Akuma art in HDR. I doubt they're redrawing the sprites, or making significant balance changes.

#9
NobleEskimo said on January 31, 2011 at 11:52 p.m.

Chances are, this (3rd Strike Online) will be coming out before Arcade Edition (which will likely be on disc) as to keep a nice distance between retail releases of MvC3 and SSF4: AE. I'm guessing it'll be out in May or June.

#10
ShadowKnight28 said on January 31, 2011 at 11:53 p.m.

I think it's just from the in-game art gallery.

#11
Ex_Ein said on January 31, 2011 at 11:55 p.m.

@noble 3rd strike online is far from complete, they still have to work out kinks in netcode and redraw everything and program new menus....here's hoping that pic is the opening

#18
Shareware said on February 1, 2011 at 12:29 a.m.

This is obviously menu art.

If this were an in game sprite, minds would melt in disbelief.

Besides, didn't Seth say that major graphics changes weren't happening other than HD conversion and (probably) graphics filters?

Here's hoping they throw in some balancing, though. I love me some Twelve, but sometimes he's a bit TOO hard to win with.

#19
kirbykirbykirby said on February 1, 2011 at 12:33 a.m.

either way 3rd strike looks real good still. if they update it for the better its all good. if not oh well.

I hope this is the new look for third strike.. if so I'll play it!

#21
EmeraldFont said on February 1, 2011 at 12:50 a.m.

Gotta agree with #20.

It's menu art, guys. We're not going to be getting an HD Remix of SF3 so stop building your hype now before you get extremely disappointed later on.

#22
therealcrown said on February 1, 2011 at 1:01 a.m.

most likely in game model think about it.. why did capcom need so much development time for third strike if they weren't gonna update the look a little? they are stepping away from 2d sprites. and why tease a menu picture or art book?

#23

3rd Strike:OE? Awesome! SFXTK? Total ass!

#24

drafuul said on February 1, 2011 at 1:49 a.m.

I'm sick of Capcom's ambiguous pics and comments. I'm going to go stop looking at this crap like a 13 year old does twilight and play some games. Goodbye stupid pictures that give away too much without being official, but really are.

#26
EmeraldFont said on February 1, 2011 at 1:50 a.m.

@24
"most likely in game model think about it.. why did capcom need so much development time for third strike if they weren't gonna update the look a little?"
I think you underestimate how much development time it takes to port a game from one console to another, add graphical filters, add online play, change the menu, and add whatever other little extras they're planning on.

Likewise, I think you're GROSSLY underestimating how long it takes to completely redo a game with HD sprites. Obviously you weren't following HD Remix while it was in development. That game took FOREVER to come out, and 3rd Strike has sprites that are much more detailed than SF2 and there are a lot more frames of animation. An HD Remix of SF3 would take forever.

"and why tease a menu picture or art book?"
1) Because it's Ono and that's just what he does.
2) Because it's just a teaser pic on Twitter after-all. News about SF3 getting a complete graphical overall is big news and isn't something they would likely reveal via Twitter

#27
fart said on February 1, 2011 at 2:12 a.m.

i think they might be able to put together higher quality sprites.
if you check the arcade flyers their original materials were higher res than what they could actually squeeze into the game
http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page...

however there is no way they would end up looking like that.

#28
fart said on February 1, 2011 at 2:13 a.m.

and by "like that" i mean the picture ono posted, he needs to show some real sf3:OE stuff

GerarRv said on February 1, 2011 at 2:36 a.m.

Looks like a re-design of the artwork in the game for the new port of SF III. Just like MVC2.

#31
MugenLord said on February 1, 2011 at 2:50 a.m.

That Yun looks too detailed for 3rd Strike, unless capcom have done a complete overhaul to its graphics, if this is yun from Tekken x Street then I must say that I am impressed just by the little pic show of him. I dunno why but I think the Namco Bandai version is going to be the better version of the cross over "X" series. No one knows anything or seen anything about the game so far, and thats what build even more curiosity from gamers about the title once they finally release so images or gameplay footage to the scene.

#32
J said on February 1, 2011 at 2:58 a.m.

This doesn't look like its in-game at all.
Probably some new art to promote SF3.

#33
ibLeo said on February 1, 2011 at 3:02 a.m.

Remember how Capcom are running a fanart competition for Urien Twelve and one or two others? And how they said that they already had plenty of fanart for the other characters?

Yeah.

#35
SPINMASTERX said on February 1, 2011 at 4:10 a.m.

Put your wangs back in your pants, this game is not gonna be an HD remix. It's gonna be online with some nice menus, maybe remixed music and that's probably it. Honestly all this game needs is awesome netcode and that's it. No rebalancing, no changed graphics, it just needs the basics,GOOD NETPLAY.

#40
Jerry said on February 1, 2011 at 6:54 a.m.

It's very obviously menu art. Look at the "Back" on the bottom.

#41
SeriphAngel said on February 1, 2011 at 7:12 a.m.

Since Street Fighter X Tekken uses the exact same sprites as the other plethora of SFIV games besides the fact that the characters now have more shading and bit more tone, I do not believe that is for that game.

A possible downloadable character for MvC3, I can see that but it still looks too detailed.

Background art does seem like the best option, especially due to his stance and high graphics update.

Since they stated the SFIII will not be changed but given online and I am not sure about a sprite enhancement, that cannot be Third Strike.

A possible part IV of Street Fighter III that might be an option.

None the less background is the biggest option and if this is to a new game, I commend Capcom on finally upping their game and hopefully the gameplay for whatever it would be from is as detailed as the muscles on Yun's arm.

blech.

#43
Edbastian said on February 1, 2011 at 7:35 a.m.

#44
jdigitalseven said on February 1, 2011 at 7:37 a.m.

Besides Yun, SF3 was pretty queer

#45
BFPhony said on February 1, 2011 at 7:38 a.m.

oh wow .. a picture, what a way to hype this game. A model for SF X Tekken? Yun is already in SF4AE. As obvious as it was, they said no new characters. And I doubt they'd redo the sprites, not that they need to. They might just add all them online modes and titles from SSF4.

agrees with #20:
Too bad Twelve didn't make the cut to MvC3, he could have had a better chance ... maybe.

#46
Weaponx said on February 1, 2011 at 7:39 a.m.

Maybe he is adding Blanka in 3rd Strike?... ya never know.

#47
gtfopanda said on February 1, 2011 at 7:40 a.m.

Gotta love that Yun art. No way in hell that will resemble game graphics, tho'.

#48
SeriphAngel said on February 1, 2011 at 7:44 a.m.

@Edbastian: I doubt it "only" because of the model they used for Ryu. Tekken at this time seems to be taken a less "dynamic" approach on graphics. However, that is still a possibility.

#49
BFPhony said on February 1, 2011 at 7:54 a.m.

#53
boobee_cakes said on February 1, 2011 at 8:10 a.m.

Like 3rd Strike needs an HD Remix. The sprites in SFII were dated, and they wanted to give it a fresh look, so the dumb kids of today don't go shi++ing on the graphics.

SFIII Though, has beautiful sprites, that have aged quite well. All that is needed is filters, a la Marvel 2's XBL/PSN launch has.

(And I'm pretty sure that's just art.)

#54
Weaponx said on February 1, 2011 at 8:11 a.m.

@ BFPhony Which is why, Q, Remy, Hugo get parried all day too? either way was just a thought, who knows whats up Ono's magic box.

#55
Hotdiddykong said on February 1, 2011 at 8:22 a.m.

Cool,but a blanka toy?
what could ono hide from us?

#56
BFPhony said on February 1, 2011 at 8:23 a.m.

@ #55
Agreed. I'd say it could even go without the filters, MvC2 was filled with even older alpha style sprites. I hope they don't widen the screen while leaving the gameplay boxed in either.

@ #56
well... yeah, but blanka is a bit too predictable. Besides, SF3 already has a more interesting blanka/dhalsim hybrid.

#57
DiegoUmejuarez said on February 1, 2011 at 8:43 a.m.

BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on February 1, 2011 at 11:11 a.m.

if they are going to balance the game fine! but AT LEAST have an option where you can play the old 3rd strike with better graphics like you can in HDR. i dont want to forget about the old 3rd strike days with new balancing and all that. please CAPCOM make it a win/win situation for both of us.

#65
BFPhony said on February 1, 2011 at 11:36 a.m.

If they do any balances, i would like an option to play the original as well. There won't be any redone sprites, or rather, it doesn't really need it in my opinion. Maybe filters, but still.

#66
BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on February 1, 2011 at 11:38 a.m.
